    Extractions: Lauren and Leif began their skating partnership in 1994 at the tender ages of ten and eleven years respectively. They very quickly climbed skating levels, progressing from Juvenile Dance in 1995 to Pre-Novice Dance in 1996 and Novice Dance in 1998. In all dance levels they have been Manitoba's Provincial Champions, and as such have earned many wonderful opportunities. At the Pre-Novice level Lauren and Leif represented their province in two Bank of Montreal Central Canadian Championships where they ultimately placed first in 1998. With this accomplishment in hand, they qualified to compete in the very first "Tomorrow's Championships" in Toronto, Ontario. This is a National Championship for juvenile and pre-novice skaters who qualify by their placement in the top four skaters in each of the four Bank of Montreal Skating Championships in Canada. In this first national experience Lauren and Leif achieved a fifth place ranking - a great accomplishment in a very broad field of skaters. There were sixteen top Canadian teams and Lauren and Leif were clearly the youngest. Based on their remarkable achievements during the 1998 season, Lauren and Leif were named to represent Canada in the 1998 North American Challenge Skate Competition, hosted in our own city, Winnipeg Manitoba. This is one of four cross border competitions designed to give top Novice level skaters from Canada, United States of America, and Mexico exposure to an international event.

Preliminary Dances Dutch Waltz - The Dutch Waltz is skated in the kilian position to 16 measures of 3/4 time waltz music at 138 beats per minute. Its 16 steps require 21 seconds for one execution. Invented by George Muller, it was first performed at the Broadmoor Ice Palace in Colorado Springs in 1948. Canasta Tango - The Canasta Tango is skated in the reverse kilian position to seven measures of 4/4 time tango music at 104 beats per minute. Its 14 steps require 16 seconds for one execution.

The Winter Olympics have come and gone, but they have made their mark while in Salt Lake City. Only a few of the many Olympic games have been etched into my mind, one of them includes Ice Dancing and the women's Bobsled Team. The women's Bobsled Team because it had the first African-American women to win the Gold medal for an event in the Winter Olympics. Ice Dancing is a major competition in the Olympics, but is Ice Dancing really a true sport? A sport in my definition when it comes down to it either has a ball, a score board, or a referee. Basketball, Baseball, Footballl, and Soccer are all great American Sports that anyone can sit down and watch when the sport is in season. Not many are excited about sitting down to watch Ice Dancing because where will the tournaments and competitions be broadcasted when they leave the public eye.
