Landsailing landsailing. by James Hart. Published December 2000. Whatever world. It's hard to describe the feeling one gets while landsailing. http://extremz.com/main/archive/dirt/landsaildec00.htm
Extractions: LANDSAILING by James Hart Published: December 2000 Whatever you call them - landyachts, landsailers, sandyachts or dirtboats - they are all sail or wing powered vehicles driven only by the wind. They can be found on dry lakes, beaches and even parking lots all over the world. It's hard to describe the feeling one gets while landsailing. It can range from near silent ghosting along in complete relaxation to an 'over the edge,' eyes-wide-open adrenaline rush. Whatever style you prefer, once you've tried it, you'll not forget it. Few sports offer such relaxation. Few sports offer such excitement! And all from the same vehicle. Yet for all the thrills, it's proven to be a safe sport, and it's also environmentally sound. Landsailing is a very low impact sport. No gas, oil, spinning wheels or loud exhausts! Wind requirements for landsailing begin at about 5 mph. Most yachts will head back to camp in wind over 35 mph. Small landyachts in the right conditions can sail two to three times as fast as the wind, or as fast as 50 to 60 mph in about 25 or 30 mph winds. Larger, more efficient (and stable!) yachts routinely sail five times wind speed for over 70 mph. The current record as of March 1999 is 116.7 mph in 25 mph wind. That's much faster than the usual 35-60 mph on the average weekend out on the drylakes. The typical modern landyacht is a three-wheeled vehicle with a single, fully battened sail. Steering is accomplished with a single front wheel controlled by the pilot's feet on a steering bar, and the pilot sits over or behind the rear axle. Sail control is usually with a hand-controlled sheetline through a ratchet block and several pulleys or 'blocks.' The sail starts out in a full rounded shape for power. Then, as speed picks up, the pilot 'sheets in' tighter making the sail assume a flatter shape with less drag.

Combining Landsailing And Bicycles LandSail Cycling. An article originally published in HPV News, April 1986, Volume3, Number 2 For years my two hobbies have been landsailing and bicycling. http://traylorfwd.home.mindspring.com/sailbikes.html
Extractions: I took two approaches. One cycle was to be built strictly for landsailing, which resulted in the long-framed bike, ridden like a scooter standing up. The other approach was to put a sail on a standard bike so that it could be sailed, pedalled, or both at the same time. Both designs have had encouraging results. The biggest problem was how to control the sail without losing control of the bike. This problem was finally solved by using a series of hand and foot ratches to pull the sail in and let it out. I found out the hard way that the sail could only be let out a little at a time, and that was an additional complication. To let the sail out quickly while leaning into the wind was to court disaster. Both bikes perform well. The larger bike is one of the fastest sailbikes in the world it will go three times the speed of the wind on a

He has a distinct advantage since he is a water sailor, so he took to it like a...well...fish to water. Corey of Wind Power Sports notes that people often can't tell when he's having a conversation about sailing on dirt when they overhear a landsailors' conversation. Extractions: Participants will be introduced to the basic principles of radio controlled landsailing and model building and then be challenged to design and build their own models to compete in an RC Landsailing Regatta at the end of IAP. No sailing or model building experience is required. The first few meetings will introduce landsailing and offer design advice and sample models to work from. Everyone will then have two weeks to build their models before the final week of testing culminating in the first ever MIT RC Landsailing Race.
Extractions: Had my best blokarting experience earlier this week when a couple of us made it up to the Kaipara Heads and back starting from Muriwai somewhere between 100 - 120 km for the round trip, I believe). I know it's a well travelled route by larger craft but if you're contemplating it, it's definitely recommended. It's a trip I've been wanting to do for about five months but combining wind, low tide and time off work had seemed virtually impossible. However, on Monday the planets must have come into line and it finally happened. There was a strong westerley (averaging just under 20 knots according to the Manukau Heads internet weather site) and low tide was mid afternoon. We set off about 1.5 hrs before then. With a slight head wind the trip north took just under two hours (including a couple of stops) but only a fraction over an hour on a very fast downwind leg.
