Extractions: Pole-vaulting is an incredible sport to watch. The vaulter's technique can be so fluid and graceful, the result of a highly studied technique designed to optimize energy conversion. In this edition of How Stuff Works we will learn a little bit about the history of pole-vaulting, and then we will explore the physics of pole-vaulting. History of Pole-Vaulting The pole vault originated in Europe, where men used the pole to cross canals filled with water. The goal of this type of vaulting was distance rather than height. In the late 1800s, colleges started competing in the pole vault. Originally the vaulters used bamboo poles with a sharp point at the bottom. They competed on grass, planting the point in the grass (because holes were not allowed back then), vaulting over a pole and landing back on the grass. In the 1896 Olympics, the record, set with a bamboo pole, was 10 ft 6 in (about 3.2 m). Extractions: The Art of Pole Vaulting Why Pole Vaulting is da bomb! Pole Vaulting is so interesting because not so many people do it. You know your special and that you have a talent most people haven't even heard of. The feeling you get when you vaulting is like flying...its so awesome! Last year was my first year of ever attempting to Pole Vault. It was so much fun! I started after my best friend Bethany tried it out. She began first and I was so intregged, that I wanted to try it myself. I always had thought of Pole Vaulting being so cool, but it's not really one of those things you think of yourself as actually doing it. The first question someone asks me when they find out that I Pole Vault is so common to hear: "Is that hard?!?" To me, Pole Vaulting is something everyone can do. It's not hard at all. But to improve it takes hard work and strength. That's what is most important. My second year of Pole Vaulting has started up again. I am wishing the three of us the best of luck. Last year I only went to a couple of track meets, because I started late in the season. It was so much fun! Even though my best height was only 6'6'', I was still in 4th at Districts which got me to Regionals. This year however, I have impoved tremendously. Because of a weight training class I have at school, I have gotten a lot stronger and at my last meet I jumped 8'9''.

To figure out how high you could vault, simply enter a sprint speed and your height in the appropriate boxes. Some sprint speeds Pole vaulting is a wonderful illustration of how one type of energy is converted to another type of energy. Through the proper use of the pole vault, the energy of motion associated with the sprint is converted into the energy needed to overcome gravity and reach a certain height. The energy of motion is called "kinetic energy," while the energy associated with working against gravity is called "gravitational potential energy." The faster you can sprint toward the bar, the higher you can vault over the bar, again assuming a proper technique. Pole vaulting is also a great example of the central principle in physics: the conservation of energy.

When I first started training with Dean Starkey my senior year at Cal Poly SLO I knew very little about the approach. I knew a bit about check marks and how they worked, but when it came to bringing it down the runway, I really didn’t know what the “next level” was all about. Basically for me, the main problem was that I wasn’t using all of my speed on the runway. I didn’t know my own boundaries when it came to "maximum controllable speed". The whole point of the exercise was not to get out of control, but to realize and experience what I needed to ultimately control. During my best jumps in competition, I could barely see the box in front of me I was running so fast. But I learned to control that top speed and execute my vault because I did the pole runs that way and over time I became familiar with the feeling of running my absolute fastest with the pole.
