The requirement was established by the Hawaii High School Athletic Association's committee on pole vaulting safety earlier this week. The committee was formed to address safety issues following a series of pole vaulting accidents on the mainland in recent years. The clinic is open to coaches and athletes and will include classroom and hands-on instruction. Olympic silver medalist Mike Tully headlines the group of instructors at the clinic. Tully broke the U.S. pole-vault record three times and won the silver at the 1984 Games. In addition to sending their coaches to the clinic, schools that have pole vaulting are also required to meet new safety guidelines instituted by the National Federation of State High School Associations for the upcoming season. HHSAA executive director Keith Amemiya said there was preliminary talk of eliminating pole vaulting from high school competition, but said the event will continue into the future.

Extractions: The Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station made headlines in April when the doctor for that remote science facility was taken seriously ill in the middle of the dark, frigid Antarctic winter. Thankfully, Canadian pilots successfully evacuated the stricken physicianbut he was not all that was ailing at the bottom of the world. The station itself has been deteriorating for years, prompting the National Science Foundation to begin this past year a $153 million modernization, which should be complete by early 2006. Built in the 1970s to replace an even older South Pole base (which is now buried under nine meters of snow), the Amundsen-Scott Station consists of a large geodesic dome and several smaller outbuildings. The dome is half-buried in drifts and suffers from an unstable foundation that threatens its integrity. Many other parts of the infrastructurefrom fuel distribution to waste disposalare also in dire need of refurbishment. But construction at this remote site is no small task. All materials have to be carried in by air from McMurdo Station on the coast using special ski-equipped transport planes. And workers have to contend with temperatures that average around 32 degrees Celsius over the summer months.

It is the general belief of the committee members that through scientific investigation; pertinent standards may be implemented for the purpose of improving safety in pole vaulting. These standards may include, but are not limited, to the following: Helmets - Currently no specific helmet for pole vaulting exists. However, helmets may be a good idea as they add a possible measure of safety to pole vaulting. Several brands of hockey and or skating helmets offer excellent protection to the sides and back of the head area and are currently being used at the H.S. and college level in the vault. However, in order to make helmets a more viable alternative, we must develop standards specifically for pole vaulting. These standards need to relate specifically to impact management, fit, structure and upkeep for the purpose of increased safety. Landing Pads Poles SUMMARY - Pole vaulting is a highly educational, rewarding sports activity that has earned a place in the high school and college sports programs across our nation. It is the intended purpose of this committee to help build a better, more efficent, and safer pole vaulting enviornment by the research and implementation of better equipment standards for the industry. To be sure the topics I have listed above are not the only areas where we need to set standards. However, they are the most important.
