A high tech nomad, environmentalist and minimalist, he lives an austere lifestyle, outdoors, carrying all of his worldly possessions with him. He lives on the edge of poverty, appearing to others as a homeless person, working on the front lines of the war that's taking place on your backstreets. Through no fault of his own he became disabled years ago after being severely injured and nearly killed when struck by a car. Since then he has overcome his disability only to be repeatedly harrassed, threatened, and struck down by the growing ranks of hurried, frustrated, and distracted motorists that pollute our air, destroy our earth, and congest our roadways.

The two situations where you see the recumbent cycling position used extensive is in human powered land speed records where it is used because of the aerodynamic benefits and in health clubs and home gyms where recumbent trainers have become quite popular. This work has been done to date at Colorado State University. Raoul Reiser, Ph.D. candidate in the Mechanical Engineering Department has performed the most extensive investigations to date of the effect of cycling position on peak power output. PICTURES of Raoul's System The bicycle is one of the most complex simple machines we encounter. As technological sophistication becomes one of the stronger selling points for bicycles, this effect only increases. Because of both the familiarity and the complexity of the bicycle as a machine, the design classes can use the bicycle as their design koan . The tradition of this approach is long, as evidenced by the existence of books such as Bicycles and Tricycles by Sharp published by Longmans in 1896 and reprinted by MIT Press as a result of work by David G. Wilson.
