A hobby is something which you do in your free time and which you enjoy. I indulge in my interests in my free time and I enjoy them. British Sign Language would not really be described as a hobby, but I do it for fun. Many people would call Esperanto a hobby, but I never would. I am an Esperantist; what you are is not a hobby. Over the past 7 or 8 years it has been teaching more and more degree level work in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde, and now the majority of the courses taught in the college are at degree level.

Recumbent Cycling recumbent cycling. Jamie Fletcher. recumbent cycling is a great leisureactivity enjoyed by many people all over the world. http://www.speedy5.freeserve.co.uk/recumbents/bentessay.html
Extractions: Recumbent cycling is a great leisure activity enjoyed by many people all over the world. It offers several distinct advantages over the common diamond frame bicycle (Fig.1) that we are all accustomed to today. These points and an attempt to draw conclusions regarding the future of recumbent cycling will be discussed in the following. Firstly, it is necessary to gain some knowledge and understanding of the subject matter by defining what we mean by recumbent cycling and explain a history of its development. Fig.1: Standard diamond frame bicycle Fig.2: Example of a recumbent cycle The word recumbent originates from the Latin meaning to lie down. Generally, all definitions of a recumbent cycle agree that it is a machine with two or more wheels, where the rider sits in a seat with legs in a horizontal position. An example of this can be seen in Fig.2. There are exceptions to this, but for the purpose of the essay it will serve as a good working definition. It is difficult to pinpoint the invention of the recumbent cycle, although some early cycle designs during the middle 1800s placed the rider in a semi-recumbent position (see fig.3).
Lifefitness On Recumbent Bikes to other forms of exercise. Like upright cycling, recumbent cyclingis nonweight bearing. But recumbent bikes typically feature http://www.hammerstrength.com/fitness_equipment/recumbent_bikes.asp
Extractions: The stationary exercise bike is a staple of fitness facilities. They are inexpensive and space-efficient, and most are self-powered so they can be placed anywhere in a fitness facility. The bikes are equally popular with exercisers who not only use them at their local health clubs, but also own home models. Their popularity can be attributed to ease of use - after all, everyone knows how to ride a bicycle. The low impact nature of stationary cycling makes it appropriate for all levels of exercisers, including beginners, those with medical conditions and fitness enthusiasts. The same selling points can be made for recumbent exercise bikes, which allow exercisers to sit in a semi-reclined position behind the pedals. The primary advantage of this position is a more comfortable workout compared to other forms of exercise. Like upright cycling, recumbent cycling is non-weight bearing. But recumbent bikes typically feature wider, more supportive seats than their upright counterparts. And if people are comfortable, they are more likely to exercise for a longer duration. In addition to comfort, recumbent bikes deliver a number of other advantages. The physiological benefits of recumbent cycling come from moving the legs and the feet in front of instead of beneath the user like in upright cycling. This position promotes an easier return of blood flow to the heart and allows every level of exercise to be accomplished with less strain or exertion on the heart, in turn providing a lower perceived exertion. These benefits, combined with increased support for the muscles and spine of the lower back, make recumbent exercise bikes ideal for older adults, pregnant women, deconditioned individuals, and those with high blood pressure, lower back problems or injuries. These special populations also can experience fitness gains without encountering training-related injuries exercising on a recumbent bike.

Mark Rehder - Cycling Bryan Ball, the Editor of Bent Rider OnLine , a recumbent cycling zine, sawmy reply to a cycling newsgroup posting about simplifying one's life. http://pages.istar.ca/~marker/bike.html
Extractions: I guess I got serious about cycling as a form of transportation while I was living in Toronto. My old ten speed finally gave out, and I did some research and replaced it with a Kuwahara hybrid bike, which served me well for many years. Since I acquired my recumbent bike, the hybrid's duties got dropped to just being the winter bike. I made some minor mods to help it (and me) make it through the snowy streets of Ottawa, and you can read more about that at my Winter Bike page. Getting rid of my car In Feb. '99 I did what some would call the unthinkable - I got rid of my car, and didn't replace it! (It was dying a slow death anyway.) I decided that it was time to live up to my views that there are too many darn motor vehicles on the road. I've always enjoyed going for bike rides and getting some exercise, and was already using the bike for most of my in-town trips, so it was time to get more serious about using one as my main transport! (Living in the core of the city also allows me to walk everywhere, as well as have my choice of buses.) The only reason I had kept the car was as a professional drummer, one does need something to move all that gear. I talked to the leaders of the bands I play most often with (who both have minivans), and asked how they felt about picking me up for gigs. Since they were already doing this half the time anyway, it was easy to come to a workable arrangement.

Bikes Of The Future? By Jose A. Hernandez, Bryan J. Ball, Editor While the decision to ban recumbents 70 years ago is indeed an interesting historicalfact, we simply don't buy that it explains why recumbent cycling is not http://www.bentrider.addr.com/Vol1/page2.html
Extractions: We all know recumbents are cool, fast, comfortable, safe and fun! Herein lies the problem. We know it but the rest of the world does not! To the rest of the world, recumbent cycling is an arcane subject. Recumbent cycling is an experience that the world is missing because of lack of readily available information. People out there just don't know very much about our strange, comfortable world. Printed literature about recumbents is hard to come by. The few publications that we've been lucky enough to run into seem to preach to the converted and show little or no interested in spreading the gospel to the rest of the world. We think it is time for each of us faithful followers of the recumbent "cult" to get active and spread the news. We think more information should be readily available. It is the goal of 'BentRider Online to reach the unbent universe as we strongly feel that recumbent bicycling is not just a fun sport. We think that recumbency is almost a way of life. 'BentRider Online aims to celebrate the joy of recumbent riding and understands that bent cycling is not just about frame geometry, seat angles and components. 'BentRider Online is for both neophytes and veterans. It is for builders as well as for the mechanically declined. We want to expose new riders to our wonderful sport and try to answer their many questions with informative articles written in plain English. We will also strive to keep the veteran riders among us interested and excited about our sport with articles about new bikes and equipment and stories of inspiration and personal triumph.

I' like to thank Mr. Gene Villaret for sharing his views on pedaling techniques and his foot retention system. Gene's dedication to recumbent cycling is admirable and his enthusiasm is simply contagious. I hope you'll enjoy his article and dare to share your bent tips with the rest of the bent universe. Ideal positioning of feet on pedals of bicycles has been pretty much a matter beyond dispute for well, ever. The underlying dictum decrees that one must center the ball of the foot very nearly over the pedal spindle. For some years I lived with this Olympian maxim, firmly repressing a contradictory notion that would periodically rear its impudent head. My eventual shift to recumbent cycling with its concomitant tendency of feet to slide backward off pedals inspired me to find a means of saving the energy required to keep feet where they belonged. All things considered, I am provisionally persuaded that I expend measurably less energy to get down the road with the present foot-on-pedal placement. However, I have no numerical findings to support these impressions. Surely there must be a fatal flaw somewhere in all of it; after all, generations of authorities cannot all have erred, can they? Still, it might produce useful insights for some cognoscente or other to undertake to develop a convincing assemblage of figures on the subject... one way or the other.
