Chris Hawks has only been competing in skiboarding for a year and has only been in the sport for a year longer than that. But Friday this former alpine and freestyle skier flew higher than the veterans to take home the gold by a slim margin. Last year's skiboarding Slopestyle winner, Mike Nick, had to settle for silver after topping the leaderboard for most of the competition.

Todd's Snow Skating (and Skiboarding) Page I've created a discussion group for snow skating and skiboarding. Checkit out! What is skiboarding, and how does it relate to snow skating? http://www.visi.com/~tam/sleddogs.html
Extractions: Updated 4/2/2002 with more current information about Sled Dogs, and removed a heap o' dead links. Todd Murray - elkman@spamcop.net. Click here if you're about to ask me where you can buy Sled Dogs. I've created a discussion group for snow skating and skiboarding . Check it out! It's essentially a crossover sport for people who do a lot of inline skating in the summer, and who are looking to do in the winter. (As opposed to snowboarding, which is a crossover sport for people who commit vandalism and other crimes in the summer.) (That's a joke!) Note: There's a new company called Premier Snow Skate that sells something called a snow skate, but it's not the same thing as Sled Dogs snow skates. It's more like a skateboard (although I'm not sure why they don't call it a snow skateboard). I've never tried their snow skates, but I'm pretty sure you can't use them at downhill ski areas because they don't have safety leashes. You can find out more about them at their web site, http://www.premiersnowsk8.com/ Don't ask the obvious question, "How do you keep the wheels and bearings from getting full of snow?" because you don't use inline skates in the snow. Instead, you use snow skates, which are like ski boots with a short ski underneath which is about the length of the boot. The best-known (relatively) brand is Sled Dogs, which was based right here in the Twin Cities. The next obvious question is: "Are they hard to learn?" Not at all. If you can skate or ski, you can learn snow skating and skiboarding easily. They behave differently than skis or snowboards do, but it's easy to pick it up. And if anyone asks, "Are they fun?" I tell them, "Yeah, they're a blast." You can do all sorts of tricks on them, and they give you the freedom to go all-out without breaking too many dog bones.
Skating.com -- Suped-Up Skiboarding S E S S I O N. Mike Nick flies the friendly skies over Crested Butte. SupedUpskiboarding Going beyond the basics with X Games star Mike Nick. http://www.skating.com/article.cgi/session/19990302
Extractions: Going beyond the basics with X Games star Mike Nick. The basics of skiboarding are incredibly simple, especially if you already have a skating background. As in skating, you apply pressure on your edges to turn, spread your feet apart for greater stability and, like ice hockey, quickly pivot and shred to a halt. In fact, if there's anything that a skater will have to get used to, it's the need to keep your weight back toward your heels, which helps avert face-planting during those inadvertent moments when you lose your balance. Remain forward and you'll enjoy nature's equivalent of a force-fed snowcone. Essentially, the skiboarding basics are so straightforward that we'll spare you the boring details. Instead, to keep you from taking a power nap on your keyboard, we've enlisted 1998 Winter X Games skiboarding champ and Line Skiboards rider Mike Nick to show a couple of more invigorating moves, designed for the twin-tipper's playground: the terrain park. If you've never done any aggressive skating before, well, skiboarding is your chance to attempt similar moves but without the fear of road rash (but bring the Advil anyway). And if you're a street or vert fanatic, be prepared to find a winter sport that's custom-tailored to your skills. Mike Nick 101, cont'd

Extractions: Sport holds its first-ever competition in front of the TV glare of ESPN's Winter X Games By Denise Walters CRESTED BUTTE, CO There once was a time when skiboarding wasn't a real sport. Just over a month ago, in fact. But that was before the Rockies hosted "The Skiboarding Summit," better known to television audiences as the Winter X Games. The ESPN-created snow festival signified the sport's first-ever formal international competition, raising it from the X Games skiboarding medalists (from left) Dave Jarvis, Mike Nick and Jason Levinthal. bowels of obscurity into the newest alpine alternative. The television coverage didn't hurt, either. Skiboarding, for those unaware, is inline skating's closest cousin on the mountain, due to similar edging and balance. The hardware consists of two compact skis, measuring 90 cm or less, that resemble a pair of shrunken snowboards. Their toy-like appearance conceals their adeptness in powder and surprising speed, as well as the fact that they are by far the most maneuverable tools on the mountain. Skiboarders had been waiting for their moment in the sun, and even though the finals were played out in what seemed like near-blizzard conditions, their moment had arrived. Present were some of skiboarding's young veterans, including Jason Levinthal

Extractions: Alpha Index Index by Sport History Bits Forum ... Search Table of Contents The graduated length method (GLM) of ski instruction was developed during the 1960s. A beginner starts out on short skis, because it's easier to ski on them, and the ski length is increased gradually as the student's skills improve. Some instructors tried the short skis and discovered they could perform many maneuvers that were difficult or impossible with longer skis. Other experienced skiers also began using them from time to time for the same reason, and several manufacturers began to produce and market short skis during the 1970s. The real prototype of the modern skiboard was the Atomic Glider, a 63.5-centimeter (approximately 26-inch) ski designed in 1982 to fit into a hiker's backpack. Soon renamed the Figl, this ski didn't have bindings, because it was meant to be strapped to a hiking boot. It was sold primarily in Colorado. About 1990, the Big Foot was introduced by Kneissel. It was just slightly longer than the Figl, at 65 centimeters, but it was quite different because of its foam-injected construction, its sidecut, and its binding system. Many consider the Big Foot to be the first real skiboard. Others would award that honor to the MicroSki, which was invented by Kent Keiswieller in 1992. He began with a snowboard, whittled away at it, and added a hands-free binding system.

Extractions: Winter Sports' Next Big Boom? Maybe you've heard about them. Perhaps you've seen them. We're talking about skiboard, the coolest new tool built for playing in the snow. Born from a desire to enjoy the slopes in different ways, skiboards combine aspects of skiing and snowboarding as well as inline skating and skateboarding. They're diminutive in size ranging from 60 to 90 cm but have enormous possibilities for fun in the snow, according to Snow Sports Industries America (SIA), the national, nonprofit trade association representing ski, snowboard and other winter outdoor companies. "Skiboarding is the natural evolution of skiing, snowboarding and skateboarding," says Jason Levinthal, founder of Line Skiboards of Albany, N.Y. "There are no limits. They allow you to do everything you ever wanted to do on skis or a snowboard but couldn't because of the size limitations." Skiboards are miniature snow-sliding tools, representing a hybrid of both traditional skis and snowboards. They're often called snow skates or miniskis. Basically, they're tiny skis that strap to traditional ski boots and can be used for learning to ski, carving, cruising runs, floating through powder, skating on flats and catching big air.
