Extractions: 2001 Reviews We'd like to thank the 190 volunteers who generously gave their time and energy to help things run smoothly. In particular, we'd like to thank the Stage Captains Helen, Tim, Marcel, Jacqui, and Lorne, as well as the volunteers who worked near the end of the race... some of you worked over six hours on the course and we really appreciate your dedication and effort! We would also like to thank Martin and his team of dedicated "first aiders" from Sports Physiotherapy Alberta . The team of volunteers from both the Shawnessy YMCA and the Kidney Foundation did a great job, especially given the length of their committment on race day. Thank you! We are currently sorting out details for 2003's race, so check back often. Entry forms will be available soon. So what's this all about This is a very scenic, point to point race course open to both relay teams and individuals.
Little Sleep For Ultramarathon Cyclists May 8, 1994 Little sleep for ultramarathon cyclists. By Lynne Tolman Sheis not he first New England woman to make an ultramarathon mark. http://www.ltolman.org/93arch/94508.htm
Extractions: May 8, 1994 By Lynne Tolman Pulling an all-nighter for a special occasion or a big deadline is one thing, but biking for days and nights on end with just a few hours sleep puts ultramarathon cyclists in a class by themselves. Not content to pedal centuries, the 100-miles-in-a-day rides that are the late-season goal of less fanatical riders, "ultra" cyclists graduate to double and triple centuries, brevets (up to 600 kilometers with a time limit) and randonees, such as the 750-mile Boston-Montreal-Boston ride. Looming large in every ultra rider's dreams is the 2,900-mile Race Across America, an eight- to 10-day grind from Irvine, Calif., to Savannah, Ga. Ed Kross of Framingham was the top rookie finisher in RAAM in 1992 with a time of 9 days, 20 hours and 56 minutes. Having set a course record in last summer's Boston-Montreal-Boston (51 hours, 36 minutes, including nap time totaling about an hour and a quarter), the 35-year-old electrical engineer is readying for another shot at RAAM, beginning July 29. Sun Precautions - Badwater Ultramarathon FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE. Everett, WA (July 28, 2000) Sun Precautions,Inc. was the title sponsor of the 2000 Badwater ultramarathon race. http://www.sunprecautions.com/Badwater.htm
Extractions: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Everett, WA (July 28, 2000) Sun Precautions, Inc. was the title sponsor of the 2000 Badwater Ultramarathon race. Seventy-four runners from around the world gathered in Death Valley this week to race from Badwater, CA (the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere), to the Whitney Portals (elevation 8360 ft.) on Mt. Whitney (the highest point in the Continental U.S.). The race of 135 miles took place from July 27 through July 30, 2000 in temperatures approaching 125 degrees. The race was a daunting test of a runners ability to cope with heat, long inclines, and desert sun. The winner of the race this year, Anatoli Kruglikov , shattered the old course record by over 2 hours and 40 minutes with a time of 25:09:05 hours. Those runners finishing in under 60 hours received a course certificate. Additionally, all finishers who took less then 48 hours to complete the ultramarathon received a commemorative belt buckle. Repeat entrant Joe Decker, featured in our recent Sun Precautions catalog, stated Wearing Solumbra has transformed how we run. Its lightweight. Its breathable. Its sun protective. And its rugged. Many competitors will wear what he modeled -

Extractions: I was crewing, along with Kate White and Judy Luce, for Squadron Leader Ian Tripp, of the Royal Air Force, who before this had never run more than 55 miles. Coming all the way from England to attempt the Badwater, it had taken Tripp and his crew a year of logistical preparations. Kate, a flight lieutenant in the RAF, crewed for me in the '99 race "on a recon," as she put it. "To quote Forrest Gump," Ian said, "I think I'll go home now.... And that was it." Anyone running Badwater is required to have at least two crew persons and a support vehicle. The race organization provides no aid, so the runners are on their own for food, water, and general assistance. We started the race with two coolers of ice, 20 gallons of water, chips, pudding, bananas, Fig Newtons, Ensure Plus, 24 Cokes, and a popular English sports drink called High5. Kate researched how many carbs (80 grams) and liquid (two liters) a person could absorb per hour. The plan was to have Ian rotate .5 liter water bottles of High5 electrolyte drink with .5 liter bottles of High5 complex carbohydrate drink every 15 minutes. This would work out to the right number of carbs and fluid per hour. Ian's race start was at 6am, and because this year's field was so large, the race started in three waves. The first hour or so was in the shade at a comfy 99 degrees. Gary Kliewer, a crew member for '99 2nd place finisher Marshall Ulrich, was standing on the side of the road with a meat thermometer. "It's a good way to measure the temperature here," he remarked. "Death Valley is off the scale of most thermometers." Despite the intense heat, the three top runners from the Russian Sports Club took off like they were doing a 50-yard dash. We all agreed they'd never be able to keep up that pace.
Chicago Lakefront Ultramarathon 50K-- April 1, 2000 Chicago Lakefront ultramarathon 50K April 1, 2000. Buck Hales. We talked aboutdoing Ice Age Trail ultramarathon this May and commenced our training for it. http://orik.com/dawgbyte/stories/Chicago_50K.htm
Extractions: Chicago Lakefront Ultramarathon 50K April 1, 2000 Buck Hales My best buddy and running partner declared, sometime in 1999, that since he was turning 50 he was going to run his first ultramarathon50 miles. Well naturally, and enthusiastically I proclaimed that I would do it with him, of course! We talked about doing Ice Age Trail Ultramarathon this May and commenced our training for it. Our training? This mainly consisted of still trying to recover from the injuries that plagued both Steve Beatty and my 1999 running years. But we were determined to see what we could do. As fate would have it, opportunities presented themselves and it looked like Karen and I would be in Europe at the time of Ice Age. But lucky for us the inaugural running of the Chicago Lakefront 50K was announced and Saint Stephen and I reset our goals, agreeing that running 50K was a good tune up for the 50 miler we will still do in Y2K. The winter was mild and we managed 16 and 20-mile runs before Valentines Day. Then we did our longest training run everat 25 miler in Morton Arboretum.
Owen Putnam State Forest 50 Mile Trail Ultramarathon Owen Putnam State Forest 50 Mile Trail Ultra Marathon November 4,2000. Buck Hales. I tested my limbs for the first time when Karen http://orik.com/dawgbyte/stories/opsf50.htm
Extractions: November 4, 2000 Buck Hales I tested my limbs for the first time when Karen and I went on a vigorous walk with the dogs one week after the race. While my legs generally responded to the signals from my brain, it was apparent that my toes had indeed suffered an insult. I suppose, if losing a few more toenails was the only price I paid for the 50 miler, then I got off pretty easy. When I was back in the room after the race the parts of my body that were talking to me were my ribs and ankles. I must've kicked my left ankle with my right foot a dozen times. Those Gel Nandi trail shoes have flanged outsoles, like blades. But my ribs? The muscles between each and every rib ached and stung, especially when I laughed or flapped my arms. I made a concerted effort to do neither, not hard, considering we'd run from first light that morning until it was pitch dark again. What amazed us both was how well we actually felt after our 11 hour and five minute jaunt. Never having run 50 miles before we didn't really know what to expect, so Saint Stephen and I brought enough provisions and gear along for ten people.
