Press Releases Wheelchair Basketball Today The Wheelchair Basketball League is administered slightly differently to the IBA National Leagues. Although teams play on a home and away basis, a large number of teams come together to play over one day in a blitz format. This works well for the promotion of the game and also ensures a great atmosphere for the games. The rules of Wheelchair basketball are the same as adhered to by FIBA with some obvious exceptions - change the travelling rule of no more than two steps to no more than two pushes. There are currently around 60 disabled people playing wheelchair basketball in Ireland. There are four teams who compete in the Irish league including two teams from Northern Ireland. Our season runs from September to April each year. We also hold a cup competition, the Paddy Byrne Cup, over a weekend at the end of the season. Most of our games are held in the Sports Complex of the Irish Wheelchair Association Clontarf nearly every two weeks. Games are Also held in the Antrim Forum, Antrim. Every once in a while we travel around the country to promote and develop the game by giving demonstrations or come and try days to try and encourage new talent into the game.
