The Hennepin Canal is more than just a fun place. It played a very important role in the history of the United States and to commerce and industry. In fact, the entire canal is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Hennepin Canal, which at one time was known as the Illinois and Mississippi Canal, was open to boat traffic until 1951. There was no cost to use the canal. Ice made from the canal's frozen waters was sold during the winters to help pay the canal's maintenance costs. The Hennepin was the first American canal built of concrete without stone cut facings. Although the Hennepin enjoyed limited success as a waterway, engineering innovations used in its construction were a bonus to the construction industry. In fact, construction of the Panama Canal was based on some of the building techniques used for Hennepin.

Located on a glacial moraine that forms the beautiful, rolling hills of Henry County in north-central Illinois, the park sits astride a trail that led Native Americans from Lake Michigan to the confluence of the Mississippi and Rock rivers. Located off Illinois Route 78, Johnson-Sauk Trail is 6 miles south of Interstate 80 and 5 miles north of Kewanee. Originally known as the Henry County Conservation Area, a local newspaper invited the public to suggest names when the conservation area was going to be changed to a state park. Two names were popular with the public. One would name the park after State Senator Frank P. Johnson, a tireless worker on behalf of the park, while the second suggested Sauk Trail as a fitting name, for the Indian tribes most associated with the park when Europeans began settling the area. The two most popular choices were combined to form the park's official name. Today, Johnson-Sauk Trail State Park features 1,365 acres of recreation opportunities.

Hiawatha National Forest has one developed cross-country skiing facility, Rapid River , but offers many other places to ski as well, particularly if you're willing to lay your own tracks. Under a blanket of snow, the North Country Trail is beautiful and day trips for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing are enjoyable. Snow depths of 48 inches provide good snowshoeing and smowmobiling, mid-December to mid-March across the forest. The Bay de Noc-Grand Island Trail lends itself to those interested in the increasingly popular winter sport of dog sledding.

Pack what you intend to carry. Before you set out on the trail, lock your car. Remove everything from inside the car and leave your glove box open and empty. Carry your wallet with you. Happy feet make a happy hiker! Wear comfortable and sturdy boots, and bring extra socks (damp socks can rub and cause blisters). The "worse case scenerio" is that you will get blisters. Be prepared to take care of them. Bring two pair of footware (three if you are skiing!): sturdy hiking boots for sports, and lighter weight shoes to wear at the lodge and/or around camp to treat your tired feet. Don't leave home without it! A first-aid kit is essential. Bandages for cuts and moleskin to protect against blisters should be standard items. Losing your way can ruin your day!
