4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty nicely organized
The author spotlights 7 important techniques (alternate picking, arpeggios, sweep picking, string skipping, legato, string bending, and rhythm guitar) one for each day of the week, and builds on each every week.So every Monday is alternate picking day, and builds on the lesson of the Monday before. It's a great idea. The author says that an intermediate player can skip to around week 17 and an advanced player can probably go to week 36.I'd say I'm lower intermediate, after some 10 years of playing both steel-string acoustic and electric.I've worked my way through the first 10 weeks of lessons in 4 or 5 days.I find some of the skills like string bending, arpeggios, legato, and rhythm to be very easy, but I've never done sweep picking and found it to be a challenge. And the string skipping is something I've never done much concentrated work on, so it's great.I'm sure that when I get up to week 17 the other skills will get more challenging for me.

JR has a good point that there's not as much guidance on technique as I'd like on a couple of things.I think he was overly critical though. There are short notes on each day's lesson about technique. One was to keep the fretting pinky in place on the G while you shift from a G to an E chord - it helped me to stop fumbling around for the E shape.Another that I have not mastered, is in sweep arpeggios, to mute each note after you play it by slightly releasing the pressure on the fretting finger. That's one that I would like more details on, because I find it hard to do, especially if I'm barring the 1st and second string with my index finger on say the 3rd fret while catching the 3rd string with my middle finger.Do I roll them off, or do I ease up on all strings between each pick?

Anyhow, I like the breakdown into small bite-size daily chunks that I can spend 10 or 15 minutes on a day, as part of my regular practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth it!
I purchased this book at the end of December to give me something to do between songs I'm learning.I've been playing for 20 years and am still able to get some good use out of this book. The lessons actually make sense and build upon previous lessons.Granted I know a lot about playing, I'm still picking up on the little things that are improving my playing still. The key to this book and any other lessons book is that you actually stick to the regimen, otherwise what's the point?

5-0 out of 5 stars A Seriously Great Guitar Technique Book For Growing Chops
I've only had this book for a short time, but I really like this book and I'm a beginner. Then again I love a good challenge-when I really push myself is when I learn the most- and this is definitely packed full of lessons to keep you busy for more than a year. It's not a method book, so you already need some knowledge of the guitar. But as far as technique books go, this is top notch and well written by a guy who knows guitar (Troy Nelson was the former editor of Guitar One and now I think he's at Guitar Edge). It's a bummer when you pay good money for a book and you are bored with it in a few weeks. I think I'll be proud when I can see how I've grown as a player from the easy licks to the hard ones (when I finally get there!). No I'm not mastering one a day, but everyone has to go at their own pace. I mean, a year's worth (or more) of lessons and music for under $20?! Right on.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners... intermediate or advanced either
Short and sweet: Get Troy Stetina's "Speed Mechanics" book. Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar For the rant read on.

Another guitar technique book, with no discussion of how to properly play the examples.365 licks, but no discussion of how to play any of the licks. Also, it is supposed to teach technique through licks.I expected to also see some discussion of where the licks came from.

From there, we also have someone who may be a great player but I don't think he has much knowledge of teaching or his own beginner days.

Take his first exercise as an example. It is a speed picking lick, no discussion of how to hold the pick, no discussion of whether the player should pick from the wrist or the arm, no discussion of co-ordination of the left and right hands.Just a lick and metronome indications. And the metronome indications... oh my... He sets this to be played from 40bpm to 112bpm, but gives no discussion of how to build this speed. How many beginners can actually pick 448 notes in a minute? This is a knife to the heart of a beginner. And his book makes it seem that you should be able to master each lick in a day. This could be the only book a beginner ever needs, they can be so discouraged they sell the guitar on craigslist the next day.

Horrible. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brief review of Aerobics Program for Total Well-Being: Excercise, Diet, And Emotional Balance
I found this book to be very well written, it's easy to understand and it's easy to read. If you follow the advice in this book I believe you will live a long, healthy & satisfied life; and you will greatly reduced the chances of you suffering from strokes, heart attacks & disease etc. Kenneth Cooper displays a wealth of knowledge & experience which you can only benefit from and you will be doing yourself a favour if you get this book. Compared to some other books on health & fitness that I have read, this book would have to be one of the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
I've had this book for many years and refer to it constantly.I think Kenneth Cooper has more sense than anyone else out there. If you don't have it, get it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good, whether your a beginner or not...
Although I prefer Dr. Cooper's first book, "Aerobics" this book is also well written, easy to understand, and conveys the importance of aerobic (principly in the form of jogging/running) as presented by the author.

Written 14 years after the original "Aerobics", Dr. Cooper has continued to evolve his principles about aerobic conditioning in this book

In this book Cooper also presents his thoughts on what constitutes productive and effective exercise as opposed toineffective exercise and exercising to the point of over training.

I recommend this book to people who are new to exercise or people who are just starting out.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE AUTHORITATIVE WORK ON THIS SUBJECT
I bought'Aerobics' by this author in 1975 when I was 43 and slipping into the state where I was puffing to tie my shoe laces
a friend recommended the book. Without doing anything too drastic in the diet department other than to increase fruit and vegetable consumption and skip fried food.
I started off in the Poor category and commenced the running programme by walking the first week for 1 mile, having to make an effort to do so in under 20 minutes on the first day.
I followed Dr Coopers directions and was amazed to find how accurate his time estimates were and how well I felt as I reduced from 110 Kgs to 85 Kgs within 5 months.
I retired when I turned 69 and now at 73 I have a need to get my arse into gear as my weight has crept up and my cardiovascular system is in dire need of rejuvenating.
I note Dr Cooper has fine tuned his work and I am embarking on his cycling programme with confidence

5-0 out of 5 stars Health for life
Dr. cooper throughly explains how your body (mainly the heart and lungs) works. The book is about his studies on aerobic exercises and how it affects the body. He talks alot about his subjects and thier conditions and how aerobics helped rid themselves of thier problems. I would say to anyone who is serious about thier health, to buy this book. It's for those who are obese, those with heart and lung conditions and even those who have problems sleeping. This book is basically for anyone and everyone. Buy this book and it may help you live longer and healthier. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent all-around book for those seeking to get fit
If you had to own just one book on fitness, this would be an excellent choice. It covers the waterfront -- basic fitness concepts; clothing and equipment selection; flexibility exercises for warm-up and cool-down; resistance exercises for improved muscle tone; step aerobics and aerobic dance; exercise variants using weights, bands, stability balls; nutrition and weight control; injury prevention; even how to select an exercise facility and instructor. The content is based on the latest research in the field, and supplemented by helpful worksheets for key elements of a fitness program, such as determining your target heart rate and monitoring your fitness and cardiorespiratory performance status. There are excellent photos illustrating the exercises to do and, perhaps more important, the exercises to avoid. Before I got this book I was trying to cobble together my own fitness program from various web sites, and wondering why I was hurting most of the time. This book helped me enormously in putting together a more sensible fitness and weight-loss program that I have been able to sustain without injury.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Photos....
I'm only reviewing the 4th Edition here -- and only a very small part, which is all I was able to glance at at the time...some photos of common exercises which the book advised against! Not just stuff like the sit-up which we now know to be bad for the back, but also side stretches, leg lifts, tilting/rolling the head backwards!Duck walks, the bridge...so many things which had been used during the tae kwon do training of my youth are listed as being dangerous here! You really must see the photos to know what I'm talking about...hopefully this Sixth Edition also has them -- it'll surprise even gym rats! ... Book Description
Would you flee in terror if confronted with a room full of sweaty people in spandex thongs?

Are you not immune to the occasional Joe Strummer-style air guitar jump?

If you answered "yes" to either of these questions, here at last is your workout book. As simple as throwing on that old Ramones (or even White Stripes) record, punk meets fitness in an exercise craze that is spreading like wildfire amongst teens and aging rockers alike: Punk Rock Aerobics. Though punk and aerobics may seem to be unlikely bedfellows -the love child of Richard Hell and Richard Simmons?-here are two "formerly decrepit, lazy, cigarette-smoking, beer drinking" rockers-turned-certified-aerobics-instructors as enthusiastic about X and Iggy Pop as they are about getting into shape.

Full of easy-to-follow moves in a home-exercise-friendly format, Punk Rock Aerobics is a calorie-burning, DIY workout. Back in the "good old days" cigarettes might have sufficed to keep rockers slim, posit these authors, but to really be able to rock out all night, you need to drop those chips and get off the couch. Peppered throughout to help you stay inspired are Q&A's and photos of rockers on their own workout routines:

  • J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. perfecting the "Face Down Butt Lift."
  • Mary Timony doing the "Jumping Jacked Ups."
  • K Records' Calvin Johnson on the philosophical implications of Ultimate Frisbee.
  • Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore declaring "it's not the poundage so much as the roundage that I have a problem with."
  • Hugo Burnham on the percentage of Jack Daniels (60) that comprised his sweat back in his glory days drumming for Gang of Four.

Also included to help you get rid of the Schlitz gut is a sure-to-be-controversial discography for picking your favorite MP3's, CD's, and LP's. As Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth declares, "Just put on yr favorite punker and "kick out the jams, motherf***er." ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Punk?
"Punk Rock Aerobics" is great for ladies who know little about punk or exercise. The pictures and directions of the "killer moves" are easy to follow, but the girls' "punk" costumes are, if anything, distracting and comical. The "50 Punk Classics" leave MUCH to be desired...leaving out many crucial punk bands and including mediocre music and non-punk (Devo?). The book, does, however, include a short list of some good punk movies, like Suburbia and Sid & Nancy and some helpful motivators to get up and exercise (including solutions to common problems + obstacles faced by women on the road to fitness). However, I think I might get more of a workout riding my bike to the beer distributor.

5-0 out of 5 stars A bizarre union violating the natural and godly order of things
Punk Rock Aerobics is a "bizarre union violating the natural and godly order of things" by combining the nonconformist underdog with the spandex-clad squeaky clean. The concept is completely DIY--no gym or special equipment required. And of course, the authors have compiled a hundred-plus discography to make your workout rock out.The Boston-based authors obtained their instructor certifications and opened an aerobics studio in 2001, and now their bring attitude and moves to you in paperback format. They make their studio mercifully dark (like a good rock clubs) and welcome guests of all ages and interests.

In addition to all the punk rock posturing, this is a good workout book. The program includes warm-up and cool-down phases.Individual moves have photo illustrations (with punk rock fashion ideas galore), detailed instructions, and tips for optimal performance.Moves are rated by difficulty and include advanced techniques for further exploration.

4-0 out of 5 stars minor sweat
I love this book! It doesn't just give you the right movies, but gives you music/movie/book recommendations. This book is for any punk fan who wants to look as good as Henry Rollins.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hell yeah!
Ok, I am NOT a person who exercises, but when I picked up this book, I knew that was all about to change. I always wanted a fit, trim body, but all the exercises that I ever did were boring, boring, boring. This book makes exerciseing fun. So pick up your copy today, blast some tunes, and get your ass up and groove!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exercise with Attitude!
    This book is so great!

I never would have thought of blending the punk rock attitude with exercise. And this book does it so well!

Punk Rock Aerobics was a gift from a friend who got tired of hearing me complain about wanting to get in shape, so at first I took the book as a joke. After all, the photos are hysterical and it's written in way that you don't associate with "exercise" books. Well, turns out that's what makes it so great! This book is far from a joke; it's almost a way of life!

I just wish these girls taught classes in Portland!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great tool in working with seniors
I work with seniors and used these cards with one who had stayed sharp and wanted to continue that way. Was able to pick out the ones she could handle more easily re declining sight and arthritic hands, and we had plenty to work with. She found them both fun and challenging, as did I -- despite the fact that I'm in my early 50's and she's in her late 90's!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for use with individuals or small groups
I've been usingthese cards with one on one conversations with the elderly people in my church and it's opened up avenues of good conversation.I've used them in a couple of small groups I lead and you can almost hear their brains working as they reflect on the questions, work the puzzles. In fact they have "aha" experiences as they solve the puzzles and cry out "Amazing, I did it!" with great sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.Several in one group want to get the cards for themselves.

I just love the Brain exercise cards. I wish I had known about this product sooner. I use these cards with my mother who is showing early signs of dementia. The cards are fun and enhance the time my mother and I spend together.

The 100 exercises for a healthy mind which are mental fitness cards developed by the Attainment Company,Inc. are a very good means of helping each person address the growth of brain functioning. These are divided into twelve categories such as (1)wake up your brain, (2) creative problem solving, (3)art and imagination, (4)brainstorming (5)double mind and seven other similar and helpful categories. The hundred versions of activities in themselves are an incentive to action and can be used in any order so that a monotonous routine may be changed to a desireable action. The steady use of this approach will help form the concept of keeping abreast of the expansion of knowledge and reduce obsolesence to the same degree that the entire population faces. This text should stimulate many people in the middle age and the elderly to reconsider their life style in order to move with knowledge expansion in a very constructive manner and to live a more composed life. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars good place to start
I thought that it was a volume 2 to "walking for pleasure exercise" but it is really a revision of it. So either one is sufficent, no need for both books by this author. Covers the topics needed to get a good start on exercise walking, a little bit more on diet than the earlier book.

Informative, straightforward, no surprises nor bad advice, a worthy start to any walking library.

Malkin's book is excellent for the beginner. I can say that because I am one.
All Malkin wants is for people to reap the benefits of exercise, all their lives, and enjoy it at the same time. His program is so hassle-free that you think it's under-acheiving, but it works.
With the facts, and a sense of humor, Dr. Malkin shows that walking is the ultimate win-win exercise, with lasting benefits.
He gives you all the basics you need, plus refined techniques, to integrate walking into your life effortlessly. Not only that, you don't have to do it every day, if you don't want to...

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly informative!
Dr. Mort Malkin is one of the nation's leading authorities on aerobic walking. He has developed clinics, programs, seminars across the states. Also, check out his other best seller, "Walking, The Pleasure Exercise."

Malkin's first attempt to persuade you to walk aerobically us by convincing you how good you will look. He will focus on the fundamentals of the whole esthetic picture, your weight, shape, posture, presence and grace, yes, grace; he believes the conveniences of modern civilization have made us into sitters instead of walkers. The computer world alone has us sitting more than ever. As for presence, Dr. Malkin says aerobic walking will bestow a more youthful appearance.

You will learn plenty on the aerobic diet guide for reducing, he informs us on carbs, proteins, fats, water, vitamins, fiber, foods with grains, salad vegetables, green and yellow vegetables, starches, dairy, fruits, etc.,

In the chapter called "How Far, How Fast, How Often", he discusses an 8-week program that is simply increasing your pace from 15 minutes at a gentle pace, every other day to 45 minutes at a very brisk pace every other day. That's all that is in the 8-week program, a doable increase in pace and time.

Included is plenty of info on preventing injuries. This is an excellent book...MzRizz

4-0 out of 5 stars For the motivated or advanced walker
This book was fairly easy to read although it can be technical at times. The book is a good second or third step to walking for fitness but tends to leave out the beginning walker and does little to help motivate the couchpotato. The book does give good advice on the importance of warming up andcooling down.Overall a good book, but not for beginners. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This book was rather disappointing even though it was first runner-up in the 2004 Visionary Awards. It was on the skimpy side for the money and as far as yoga goes, the poses were few and very common ones you could find anywhere else. The meditation page was interesting though, as well as the Bear Walk. The color illustrations were nice. I really kind of expected more from the book than what the title led me on to believe was actually in the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars For older kids
I have bought a lot of yoga books lately, looking for the best resources to use with my preschool daughter. From the reviews and the title and description of the book, this one seemed like a good candidate. It arrived today and I opened it up; right on the cover page below "cool yoga, stretching and aerobic exercices for cool kids" it adds "ages 6 - 12."Well!I wish I had known that before I bought it.

Then I looked through the book and it lost another star.Overall, I this book is geared for preteen kids to read to teach themselves yoga and I think the author underestimates the ability of this age group to tell when they're being talked down to -- this is based on the illustrations and descriptions of each pose. The text is simplistic and the illustrations even more so.They are cartoonish drawings, not even real photos of children doing the poses.Like a Fish in Water by Isabelle Koch would be much better for this age group.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent exercise resource for kids!
This is a book kids will love because it makes exercise so fun, so easy and so, well, cool! What kid today doesn't want to learn all the great yoga moves their moms and dads are doing? And with plenty of solid information about what moves work which body parts, great stretching exercises, aerobic activities and a superb workout journal for kids to record their accomplishments on, this is a wonderful tool for improving health. The book's colorful illustrations help kids learn the proper body positions and poses, and the step-by-step instructions are super easy to understand.

This book is perfect for kids from 5 to 15, and even adults who never did yoga before will appreciate the simple, yet detailed directions. Get your floor mats, get on your workout gear, and get in shape, kids. This book will not only make it easy, but fun and exciting at the same time. Who doesn't want to learn how to walk like a bear???

4-0 out of 5 stars A workout for the Athletes
I'm a women's tracck coach at the area school for the blind. Our track season is at the hottest time of the year. (August-October) when my girls come back from summer break, they are out of shape. It is so hard to get them into shape without serious strains, shin splints, etc. when the heat index is 100plus. The workout in the book is wonderful because it's easy to teach the skills on land before getting into the pool. I don't have the time to teach an "aerobic workout'. i like knowing that I'm using the same basic skills that are used on the track and transferring to the pool. It makes the best out of every practice. ... Read more
