As usual, Health for Life provides an extensive write up of the theory. But besides educating you on what is "VO2 Max" and your "Lactate Threshold", it provides very specific running programs from beginner to advanced and for different purposes(bodybuilding, martail artist, losing weight, developing endurance). The second hand price here definitely makes the book a bargain. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars STILL THECLASSIC

If anyone wants to get in shape orbetter shape this is theclassic.Incredible week by week progressive plans for wherever you are in your fitness level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Point system for cardiovascular fitness
An updated version of the 1969 book by the author who coined the term "aerobics"
for cardiovascular/cardiopulmonary exercise. It contains expanded and updated point
tables along with programs for overweight, cardiac and special needs persons. It
also contains adjustments for age and gender not present in the original volume, and
lists point values for an expanded set of sports and recreational activities.

This book answers the exercise questions "How much?""How often?""What condition
am I in?" in a scientific and calibrated manner. It gives in the tables a translation
of the cardiovascular benefit of each activity (primarily running, walking, cycling,
swimming and sports like basketball, handball, etc) into point values, and sets out
how many points you need per week to maintain a prescribed level of fitness. It also
describes a simple 12-minute run/walk test to measure your current level of fitness.
His simple test has now become the practical standard used by the military, schools,
fire, police and other organizations to evaluate the fitness of soldiers, employees,
applicants, students and others.

The book describes how to get started, how long it'll take to get to a "good" level of
fitness, what to expect along the way, and the benefits of achieving and maintaining
good fitness. It lays out the surprising benefits of good fitness including weight loss,
assistance in quitting smoking, alleviation of symptoms of asthma, diabetes, cardiac
diseases, and other chronic and degenerative conditions.

However, if you're looking for a get-fit-quick or get-fit-with-no-effort book for the
exercise phobic, this book is not for you.Everything in here is quantified and measured;
the start up fitness programs are 16-weeks of 3-4 days per week, 15-30 minutes per
day of moderate level activity like running or cycling. You're going to wear out some
track shoes following the programs herein.

Buying this book is $6 well spent for a simple guide to getting in shape. It's at times,
uplifting, entertaining, dry and funny, full of facts and figures, but never frivolous.

The principles of this book would be a good foundation for a comprehensive
cardiovascular, strength and flexibility fitness program. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good place to start
I thought that it was a volume 2 to "walking for pleasure exercise" but it is really a revision of it. So either one is sufficent, no need for both books by this author. Covers the topics needed to get a good start on exercise walking, a little bit more on diet than the earlier book.

Informative, straightforward, no surprises nor bad advice, a worthy start to any walking library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good choice for beginners
Malkin's book is excellent for the beginner. I can say that because I am one.
All Malkin wants is for people to reap the benefits of exercise, all their lives, and enjoy it at the same time. His program is so hassle-free that you think it's under-acheiving, but it works.
With the facts, and a sense of humor, Dr. Malkin shows that walking is the ultimate win-win exercise, with lasting benefits.
He gives you all the basics you need, plus refined techniques, to integrate walking into your life effortlessly. Not only that, you don't have to do it every day, if you don't want to...

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly informative!
Dr. Mort Malkin is one of the nation's leading authorities on aerobic walking. He has developed clinics, programs, seminars across the states. Also, check out his other best seller, "Walking, The Pleasure Exercise."

Malkin's first attempt to persuade you to walk aerobically us by convincing you how good you will look. He will focus on the fundamentals of the whole esthetic picture, your weight, shape, posture, presence and grace, yes, grace; he believes the conveniences of modern civilization have made us into sitters instead of walkers. The computer world alone has us sitting more than ever. As for presence, Dr. Malkin says aerobic walking will bestow a more youthful appearance.

You will learn plenty on the aerobic diet guide for reducing, he informs us on carbs, proteins, fats, water, vitamins, fiber, foods with grains, salad vegetables, green and yellow vegetables, starches, dairy, fruits, etc.,

In the chapter called "How Far, How Fast, How Often", he discusses an 8-week program that is simply increasing your pace from 15 minutes at a gentle pace, every other day to 45 minutes at a very brisk pace every other day. That's all that is in the 8-week program, a doable increase in pace and time.

Included is plenty of info on preventing injuries. This is an excellent book...MzRizz

4-0 out of 5 stars For the motivated or advanced walker
This book was fairly easy to read although it can be technical at times. The book is a good second or third step to walking for fitness but tends to leave out the beginning walker and does little to help motivate the couchpotato. The book does give good advice on the importance of warming up andcooling down.Overall a good book, but not for beginners. ... Product Description
Aerobic exercise refers to exercise that involves or improves oxygen consumption by the body. Aerobic means 'with oxygen', and refers to the use of oxygen in the body's metabolic or energy-generating process. Many types of exercise are aerobic, and by definition are performed at moderate levels of intensity for extended periods of time. To obtain the best results, an aerobic exercise session involves a warming up period, followed by at least 20 minutes of moderate to intense exercise involving large muscle groups, and a cooling down period at the end. This new and important book gathers the latest research from around the globe in the study of aerobic exercise and athletic performance with a focus on such topics as: the anti-inflammatory effects of exercise, physical exercise in Parkinson's disease, physical activity and women, aerobic exercise capacity and pulmonary function, aerobic exercise with chronic kidney disease, biomechanics of martial arts and combative sports, and others. ... Product Description
Currently, modern chronic diseases are the leading killers in Westernised society and are increasing rampantly in developing nations. Considerable knowledge has accumulated in recent decades showing that physical exercise can be a very effective non-pharmacological strategy in the treatment of these pathologies, and as a result, several types of physical exercise are recommended in this matter. Aerobic exercise has been recognised as a safe and beneficial physical training modality for a number of chronic conditions, yet physicians do not know how to prescribe it. This chapter aims to discuss the effects of aerobic exercise in the treatment of metabolic syndrome-related disorders (diabetes, hypertension and obesity), heart and pulmonary diseases (coronary heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma), locomotive apparatus disorders (rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis systemic lupus erythematosus and fibromyalgia), neurological diseases (multiple sclerosis), and gastrointestinal disorders (Crohns Disease). The suggested potential mechanisms for the beneficial effects of aerobic exercise are discussed and some basic guidelines for exercise prescription in this kind of populations are given. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Trite But True
I wouldn't have bought it if I could have looked at it first. I had heard most of the ideas over the years. It has some value for small group activities.

5-0 out of 5 stars The cards are great
I highly recommend these cards for someone who has a loved one with slight dementia. They are plastic coated, so they are very durable and they help a loved one work their mind doing different tasks every day. Each card has things listed for that person to do or work on that day. Its a great product.

5-0 out of 5 stars My parents are loving this!
I bought these cards because my mom was recently diagnosed with "age-related memory loss" and I thought these would be great for her. They are.Turns out she (who is 76) and my dad (who is 86) do one card every night after dinner - instead of watching TV - and are absolutely loving it.It stimulates their brains, they have fun and they find out things about each other that they never knew!I'm very happy with my purchase and recommend this product to anyone with memory issues.I may even buy a set for myself as preventative medicine!

5-0 out of 5 stars Aerobics of the Mind Cards review
I had brain surgery two years ago and have had slight memory problems since then.I ordered these cards after seeing a PBS show on brain plasticity and thinking that I might improve my memory with exercise (not just doing the same type of brain game over and over). These cards give you all kinds of ideas to work different parts of your brain, in groups or by yourself.I not only have improved my memory, but also my focus and mental alertness.I have receommended them to many other friends and and we're just in our fifties!

5-0 out of 5 stars great tool in working with seniors
I work with seniors and used these cards with one who had stayed sharp and wanted to continue that way. Was able to pick out the ones she could handle more easily re declining sight and arthritic hands, and we had plenty to work with. She found them both fun and challenging, as did I -- despite the fact that I'm in my early 50's and she's in her late 90's!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Moves
When I first heard of The Nia Technique, I knew in my gut that this was the right movement for me. I ordered this book in 1992 when I still lived in Atlanta and there were no Nia teachers there yet. I've continued to read and use it over the years, and each time I learn something new. Then I ordered the tapes, and I was hooked. This is powerful, grounded movement, done in bare feet, that makes you feel like a dancer and a black belt karate star at the same time! The people, Carlos and Debbie Rosas, are true movement visionaries. They walk their talk, and make the moves so simple to learn. While the learning is easy, it also takes a lifetime to incorporate all the dynamics like chi, sinking, rising, instrinsic, extrinsic. Taking a Nia class is a great way to augment your study of the book, too. The pictures are beautiful and the exercises are easy to understand. Highly recommended. This books needs to be republished! Customer Reviews (1)

5-0 out of 5 stars Aerobics of the Mind
This text is an innovative approach to stimulating individual learning and subsequent constructive action. The author clearly expresses the means by which each aging individual can continue to remain alert and progressive in thinking and action. It is a useful guide to keep the elderly in step with the steady growth of the utilization and expansion of knowledge.
The text is arrayed in six sections. These are (1)introduction, (2)Model programs, (3) Exercises and Activities, (4) Pep talks, (5) Answers to Games, Quizzes and Puzzles and (5) Resources. The author formulated this methodology for action while doing research on creativity and aging with women who all were over the age of seventy. She quotes the scientific studies that show that even in old age the brain has a remarkable tendency to change and grow. This is especially true if the brain is stimulated by regular use.Throughout the book there is a steady unfolding of how to do this to keep each brain active and willing to learn. There is a steady and imaginative approach to how to make the commonplace and usual a means for growth and development by group interaction as a means of opening the mind to the subtlties of learning in a way that opens the means to the desire for more insight into the real world rather than limiting it to the personal world. The long and interesting examples of this is a prod to each individual to contribute to growth and development of the brain.
The 100 exercises for a healthy mind which are mental fitness cards developed by the Attainment Company, Inc. are a very good means of helping each person to address the growth of brain functioning. These are divided into twelve categories such as (1)wake up your brain,(2)creative problem solving,(3)art and imagination, (4)brainstorming, (5) double mind and seven other similar and helpful categories. The hundred versions of activities in themselves are an incentive to action and can be used in any order so that a monotonous routine may be changed to a desireable action. The steady use of this approach will help form the concept of keeping abreast of the expansion of knowledge and reduce obsolesence to the same degree that the entire populations faces. This text should stimulate many people in the middle age and elderly to reconsider thier lifestyle in order to move with knowledge expansion in a very constructive manner and to live amore composed life. ...
