Product Description
At last, a clear and insightful look at the system of beliefs that is the basis for the practice of Aikido. The Philosophy of Aikido is an invaluable guide for practitioners--whether beginning or advanced--wishing to know more about the context in which Aikido was developed and Aikido's implications for the world today.

Intended as a companion volume to Kisshomaru Ueshiba's classic The Spirit of Aikido, the book is authored by John Stevens, the foremost non-Japanese expert in the field. It is written from an international perspective that considers how Aikido is related to the emerging global culture.

Some of the ideas discussed are:
* the relation of Aikido to such Asian traditions as Shinto, Shingon Buddhism, Omoto-kyo esotericism, Taoist mysticism and Tantra
* points of correspondence between Aikido and Western philosophical and religious systems--Greek philosophy, Christianity, Kabbalah, alchemy and modern scientific theories
*links between Aikido and art
* ways that Aikido thinking can be used to advance the causes of such urgent issues as health and healing, conflict resolution and environmental responsibility

The Philosophy of Aikido will be of vital interest to all those who are drawn to a dynamic philosophy centered on harmony, peace and spiritual strength. The book includes 70 black-and-white illustrations of woodblock prints, calligraphy and photographs from the author's extensive collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, eloquent, thought-provoking book
I was extraordinarily impressed by this book.Author Stevens has provided a succinct overview of the philosphy of Aikido. What is at least as impressive is how he ties in religious and philosophical threads from many other traditions, eastern and western, ancient and modern, in a way which sets Aikido's spirituality in a wonderfully broad and rich context. He does this in a way which is not at all forced or contrived, but truly sensible and resonant.A work of this philosophical and religious depth is a real find at any price.

Personally, I found this book very moving and thought-provoking, and a great help in my spiritual search.I strongly recommend it for all Aikido practitioners, as well as all those generally interested in eastern philosophy and comparative religions.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK, not great.
Some interesting thoughts on aikido, but very thin for expensive price. Last half of book is nothing but photos. Save yourself some money. Buy it used or wait for the paperback. ... Read more

Product Description
Morihiro Saito is the author of Aikido: Its Heart and Appearance as well as the highly acclaimed technical series Traditional Aikido, published in the early 1970s, and Takemusu Aikido, published in the mid-1900s. Saito Sensei enrolled as a student of Aikido Founder Morihei Ueshiba in 1946 in Iwama. One of the art's foremost technicians, Saito Sensei was the acknowledged authority on Aikido weapons training. He operated Ueshiba's private dojo in Iwama, Japan and served as caretaker of the Aiki Shrine for more than 30 years. Saito Sensei travelled extensively throughout the world for over three decades teaching his comprehensive aikido training methods.Aikido: Its Heart and Appearance was first printed in March 1975 and published by Minato Research & Publishing Co, Ltd. This book "will help you grasp the roots of Aikido which creates an unlimited number of techniques," the words of Morihiro Saito Shihan in 1975. The book covers a wide range of techniques including taijutsu, Aiki Ken and Tachi-dori and features hundreds of photographs to clarify the different techniques presented. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Aikido Library Essential
Saito Morihiro was a teacher of martial aiki, and conveyed the presence of pre-war aikido better than any living person until his death a few years ago. While the photos are not the best (taken from the 16mm films of Saito; same ones later done in the 5-volume series), the explanation of hitoemi and basic training exercises are worth the price.
This is not the most "slick" instructional book out there, but for any serious aikidoka it's a worthwhile addition to the library and will become a useful reference that is timeless.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites
Out of quite a few books about Aikido that I own this is the one I return to most often. What sets it apart from other books is the demonstration of fundamental aikido techniques both with and without bokken. It concentrates on a small, but representative number of techniques. These are explained very well. Quality counts more than quantity. I have used the book to devise training lessons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Presents Aikido very well
This book was actually recommended to me by a black-belt, Aikido student and I have never regretted it's purchase. I tend to study sword-styles, and Aikido offers several movements based on sword-fighting principals (as well as actual sword-fighting based on old samurai movements).

It also has a bit on the history of Aikido, breathing, meditation, the life of Ueshiba Morihei (the founder of Aikido) and a glossary of Japanese terms. The rest of the book is mostly dedicated to movements. All in all, this is a must-have for anyone even remotely interested in Aikido.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book - Great Aikidoka
It's by far one of the best books i've ever read on Aikido. This books shows all the basics of classique aikido.

Great book with very nice pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favourite aikido resource book.
One of John Steven's early works that I am aware of on aikido, is also one of the better ones that I have acquired. The excellent photographs of the various techniques, which blend in the principle of swordmanship andspiritual elements of aikido are unmatched. These photos and the large pageformat are a leap from the martial arts books of the sixties and seventies.Ideally I would have liked to have seen a similar format follow-up bookauthored by John Stevens that takes more advantage of his knowledge ofEastern philosophy as can be experienced through aikido, but the otherbooks he has written are good additions to read along with Aikido: The Wayof Harmony. If you are looking to be introduced to aikido or want to give agift that encompasses the art from the elementary to the advanced, thiswould be my pick. Stevens avoids getting to heavy on the Japanese terms andphilosophy that might scare of the beginner. The sad part about the book isknowing that Shirata Rinjiro recently passed away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introductory book to this excellent martial art
This was the first book I ever bought on Aikido, and after reading more than 12 other books on the subject, it still stands out pretty good. The historical overview of the art's founder, Morihei Ueshiba in the first few chapters is very informative, as is the section where Stevens explains Aikido's philosophy and the religious principles that influence it. The photo illustrations of the various techniques are quite good, especially where they first show you the bokken (wooden sword) version of a technique, then show you the empty hand technique that was developed from it.Not an extensive catalogue of techniques, but a great introduction.I highly reccommend it. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Uninspiring, Valueless and patronising
This is not a book about teaching aikido to children, but a book about aikido written for children. It attempts to explain what aikido is and how a class operates in language suitable for children. It fails. I found there to be little concrete information in there, very few techniques are illustrated, there is nothing about the the origin of aikido or any mention of what makes aikido different to other martial arts. The writing is overly simplistic and highly patronising. Even the section for parents treats them like idiots.
This book could have been very helpful if it only contained some facts, some technical information, and did not make the assumption that just because the reader is a child he must be stupid.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best children's Aikido book ever!
As an Aikido teacher, I think this book is especially helpful for children and parents considering whether Aikido is right for them.Rather than being a book for Aikido teachers, "Aikido for Kids" is an excellent resource for children and parents interested in Aikido. My favorite aspects of the book are the diversity of the children models (age, rank, ethnicity, ability and gender with students training with people different from themselves) and the emphasis on how Aikido is useful in daily life (making friends and respecting parents is described as Aikido). The physical aspects of Aikido are presented in a clear and inviting way and includes everything that is part of a typical Aikido class from warm-ups to testing (I particularly like the segment on rolling). The section for parents on finding an Aikido class for their child contains wise and practical advice.I can think of no better resource for children and parents seeking an introdution to Aikido.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for aikido teachers and parents
I found this book to be an excellent resource. I teach aikido to kids and bought a copy to circulate among my students. It introduces the basic aikido concepts, but does not get bogged down with a lot of Japaneseterminology, which tends to differ from dojo to dojo and would not behelpful. This book will give students confidence and makes aikido practiceseem approachable. The section on testing was very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the younger child starting Aikido
This book covers the things that a younger child wants to know who is getting interested in Aikido and martial arts. The plentiful pictures both show the various stances and are motivating to the child who may think thathe'll never be able to "get it."It is an excellent introductorybook to the subject of "Aikido for kids."

2-0 out of 5 stars Aikido Light
I was hoping to have this book be a resource for my youngsters as they fall into the 9-12 age range and have advanced several belts in Aikido. We all agreed the photography was a bit flat and univiting. Our dojo uses theJapanese termnology and the lack of it bothered them - as well as they areused to mixed classes of children and adults. This book is good at givinga very basic understanding of the differnces between Aikido and othermartial arts and it is suitable to be read to very young children (4-6)whomay be curious before they visit a dojo.As a study aid for older childrenit falls quite short. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent, encourages beginners
I loved this book because it was so encouraging and I could not believe that I was reading an interview by Steven Seagal, my hero. I am taking aikido and he pointed out that one should empty oneself like a cup and be humble in the dojo. That is what I tried to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars I found this book to be a must for all beginning aikidoka.
I found A Beginner's Guide to Aikido to be most informative. It covers everything that a beginning aikido student needs to know.It is easy reading and has excellent information for future reference.I particularly enjoyed the comments by Aikido Masters Steven Seagal, Mitsunari Kanai and Mitsugi Saotome respectively. This text is recommended for my students study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for any one interested in Aikido.
Reynosa Sensei has gathered the essentials and details of the day-to-day practice of Aikido, as well as in-depth interviews and articles with Aikido masters, and brought them into one comprehensive guide.Japanese dojo etiquete is complex and seemingly random to outsiders. This book provides the Aikido practitioners, beginner and experienced alike, with a manual to these nuances.Concise explanations to any number of practices can be found here, and the interview with Steven Seagal Sensei provides a rare view into the mind and motivations of the most famous and accomplished of Aikido masters since O-Sensei himself!Interviews with other masters of this gentle art round out the abstract portion of this presentation. If you're curious about the art, this book is for you.If you've recently signed up for Aikido and remain unsure of how to act or the meanings behind things, this is for you.If you've been studying Aikido for a number of years, you'll still finda number of revelations. No picture book, this is cover-to-cover information, including terminology, descriptions of basic techniques, etc.I heartily recommend it; Reynosa's book is required reading for my students. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book!
This book shows you only five different Aikido throws with plenty of photos from different angles. The author has the right idea of concentrating on a minimum of moves instead of throwing all he can at the reader which often overwhelms. Very well put together.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good aikido book.
This is a good book, with many photographs to illustrate the techniques included, and to help illustrate the principles behind those techniques.

There are many used copies available via this site.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good introductory book...
This author was once one of the brightest stars among American instructors of Aikido, having trained or trained with many of the names who are now staples in the art. This book is insightful, and purposefully narrow in its approach, by giving very detailed information about only a few of the most fundamental Aikido techniques.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
Good step by step shots of techniques with clear and concise explanations, valuable explanations of etiquette, somewhat motivating too!

Although I have studied Zhan Shu Chuan for over 17 years I was still able to find excellent tips that would help sharpening the novice technique through the advanced practitioner. 3-0 out of 5 stars The Student
This book has introduced the same ideas about aikido training that are emphasized in the dojo where I train, a interesting coincidence and right on the mark. I think it is a good tool/reference for others trying to develop their "center" and improve their Aikido.

5-0 out of 5 stars Describes what makes aikido aikido.
I liked this book a lot (hence the five stars). Then again, I was the "dummy" of my aikido dojo, the guy who never quite caught on. If you've studied a lot of martial arts or even aikido for a long time, but just don't seem to "get it" then this may be the book for you. It discusses some of the basic concepts and principles that differentiate aikido, the flowing, low-energy martial art, from the more common sort of "arm-twisting self defense" techniques based on muscle. This is an excellent book if you know the techniques in mechanical terms, but people keep saying things like "you're using too much muscle" or "gently" and you just don't quite understand what it is that they want. This was the book I needed at the right point in my aikido path, although it is not for everyone. If you want what it offers and know enough mechanics to know that you're missing something in your aikido and it's important, then this book might help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Centerforce!
There are many reviews here for you to read in (more or less) detail about this book. So I'm not going to write about that. But I would like to make a small contribution: If you are a beginner in Aikido (let's say you are practicing it for less than 3 years): buy some other book because this is not what you need or can eat at the moment. If you are an advanced student and interested in more than just throwing someone around in the dojo: use the 'buy with one click'-button on your right, right now. You won't regret it. I have read quite a lot books about Aikido and this one is definitely in my top 5!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for Aikido practitioners.
It is very difficult to explain Aikido through words but this book gives some very good pointers worth trying during your regular practice.

It doesn't teach regular Akido techniques but it gives some pointers on body posture, mindset and working with your partners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent insight into what is really happening in Aikido
As a newbie Aikido-ka of only one year, this book is really helping me understand what is supposed to happen during technique.I am starting to grasp why Sensei is so focused on whole body motion and a centered & balanced alignment at all times.

After reading a dozen other books on Aikido, this is the first book that explores centering, whole body alignment, grounding, up-rooting, and spiraling concepts individually and as pieces of the whole. These concepts, and the training methodologies suggested, have helped me in my training immensely.I expect I'll review this book frequently since it's so packed with gems of insight.

The authors are not of the same martial style as my school ... but the concepts presented are older than any Aikido style.

5-0 out of 5 stars pictures, pictures, pictures
This book is exactly what it purports to be: a "picture" book. The pictures, in this case, are those of people in action and, while it's hard to capture the idea of movement in still photographs, this book probably does it as well as could be done. For Aikidoists and others interested in the more "artsy" side of martial arts, this is an excellent place to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars I danced the night away!
I recieved this book and in a few hours had devoured its contents. It's A Lot Like Dancing is not a book on Aikido techniques and does not teach techiques. What it does is give you insight into the attitude and depth of the art known as Aikido.I am glad to have gotten this book it has filled in some gaps of my knowledge of the Art of Aikido and how to proceed from here.Aikido is based on love and centeredness, that message is but a few Terry Dobson has taught the many who were privy to his siminars and classes.I wished I would have had the opportunity to meet Terry Dobson.

3-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable evening
I spent an enjoyable evening with Terry's words and the accompanying pictures.I'd hesitate to call it a book about aikido.I'd call it a memoir by an aikidoka.

The vignettes that are presented are well-done, and a number gave me pause to reflect on them.

The photography used a too-slow shutter speed for my taste, most of the time.It conveyed the motion that is essential to aikido, but it often resulted in being just a blur on the page.

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT ESSENTIAL
The images were mildly interesting but the photography was only average. The best image was the one on the cover, which does convey the dynamics of the spherical movements. The written content was slight. It was worth one look and then went onto the shelf. I doubt I will open it again. I'm still looking for something that captures the remarkable grace of this powerful form of self-defense.

5-0 out of 5 stars A glimpse at an "aiki life"...
This book is a collection of anecdotes by and about Terry Dobson Sensei, a colorful and unorthodox early student of Aikido in Japan. It is an earthy look at the irreverent, yet dedicated way that this man incorporated aiki principles and teachings into his life, and the influence his interpretations had on the lives of his students. This book is a must if you want to explore Aikido "beyond the mat". ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Overview
This is an interesting book for anyone just getting started in aikido.I found it to be a good primer to share with other foreign students when I was studying aikido in Japan when our instructors' (who spoke mostly Japanese) teachings became difficult to understand and then explain to others. It's not a book to learn techniques and such, but it's good to give the new student a proper focus in the dojo.

2-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read but factually untrue
Bottom line....The Aikido that is being taught today is not the Aikido that O-Sensei taught. Todays Aikido is a watered down, softened version so we Americans can deal with it. O-Sensei original Aikido or Aiki-budo, wasmore like Aikijutsu were it at least had some martial art value. Todaypeople enter into Aikido believeing they are going to study a Martial art.what they get is square dancing in a circluar fashsion.Alot of peoplewill read this review and state "This and that" in defense oftheir Aikido, but bottom line is , If it isn't Aikijutsu, its not worthanything as a martial art. I've taken several of Wendy Palmer's workshops in person and highly recommend her book, The Intuitive Body. Her video demonstrating practices outlined in the book is also extremely helpful, especially if you can't make it to her trainings in person.I'm a Life Coach and the other day a mom asked me for some parenting advice, I found myself recommending this book.Wendy's practices are as applicable in a business meeting as they are walking down the street or parenting your demanding two year old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Wendy Palmer brings Aikido practices into layperson terms and the reader walks away with practices and knowledge that help with overall growth and development, without having to take up the practice of Aikido itself. Very insightful.

I recently read through Wendy Palmer's book the Intuitive Body and also attended one of her workshops.Being an executive coach looking for insights and practices on how to help clients stay centered and balanced in the corporate world, I was fundamentally floored when I came across Wendy's work.Being in a fast paced business environment, constantly on the go, I myself have found her concepts to be extremely applicable and have used them in my executive coaching.I highly recommend Wendy's work for people interested in deepening their understanding of what to actually do to become more present, aware and more effective dealing with life challenges whether they be in the corporate or personal setting.

2-0 out of 5 stars "?"
I bought this book because the title sounded really, really exciting. Upon glancing it I lost my enthusiasm. Then I read it cover to cover and liked it even less. I put it on the shelf and after a few months I re-read it cover to cover a second time. I still cannot get the point of this book. It contains a lot of Aikido metaphysics grafted onto buddist meditation with Lao Tsu quotations as a glue. In a quest of being original the author creates a great deal of confusion and at times she shows a weak, scholastic understanding of taoist concepts. Conquering the space is Yang, vacating the space is Yin. "Holding the space" is not yin or feminine (p. 19 and again p. 123): it's simply neutral. The author asks: "How can we surrender in a way that feels life-giving. At what point do we perceive penetration as violation?" I understand that sentences out of the context can be misleading, however, the concept of "penetration as violation" conveys aplainly wrong message. In some martial arts, Aikido among them, you make "Yin/empty" a certain section of space simply because your opponent wants to make it "Yang/full", and vice-versa. In so doing you win because you don't contest for space. There's no judgment as words like "penetration" and "violation" imply. There is only Mu-Shin, No-Mind.
The chapter "Irimi" contains an extensive quotation from Saotome's book "Aikido and the Harmony of Nature". That quotation is a true master piece and the Author kind of embarasses herself by adding five pages of rather clueless comments. The attempt to link the Energetic field with the circles, triangles and squares taught by M. Ueshiba, is ... ho-hum .... what was the point once again?
Well, in conclusion, everyone interested in aikido spirituality should read Saotome's quoted book. This is not a good one, in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than just insight
Movement is both spiritual and physical. Many people are restricted by how they have learned to interact with others. Wendy has found how to break free of those conditionedrestrictions in order to enter the never ending process of self discovery and continue on that path. It isn't easy, but she is clear about the importance of practice and provides excellent examples for readers who are already engaged in the process of becoming, as well as for those who have yet to find the courage to begin. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The power of your mind, throw it all away.
This book is the first edition of what is now known as "Ki in Daily Life"

There are useful things to be mindful of when you read and learn things in this book, but would enhance your experience when guided by an instructor who teaches Ki Aikido.

I was a practitioner first before reading anything in the books, but this one being now over 40 years old, there is much going on that was realized far before anyone cared to listen, and it's the same today.

Highly recommended, in support of anything similar to yoga concepts, zen meditation and others.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thesis of Aikido and Ki
Written in 1966, this is Tohei Sensei's third book after "Aikido: The Arts of Self Defense" (1960) and "What is Aikido?" (1962).At that time, Koichi Tohei was the Chief Instructor of the Aikikai.Later on because of politics or personal growth, depending on the source, Tohei formed his own organization, and for a while stopped using the term Aikido in favor of the term "Ki" (same as Chinese "Chi").

Although there are some exercises described, this is more of a philosophical book which delves deeply into the spirit and theory behind the art and practice of Aikido. This is the first developed thesis on Tohei's Ki concepts, which are generally free from the superstitions and magical thinking that permeates some other schools of thought."KI" according to Tohei has more to to with the unity of the mind with the body.

Later revised editions of this volume were published as "Ki in Daily Life".I like the harmony of a unified Aikido presented in this earlier version.

4-0 out of 5 stars The art of conflict resolution
At first I rolled my eyes at the cover, and found the writing style and some examples to be overly earnest. I must admit, however, that the essence of the book is strong and had a positive impact in my personal and professional life, encouraging me to re-evaluate my understanding of conflict. I have been studying aikido for fouryears, and found this book to be a simple and lucid guide to applying the principles I study on the practice mat to verbal and emotional conflicts.

5-0 out of 5 stars True Spirit of Aikido
"The 'spirit' of aikido lies in bringing to light man's natural strength and his hidden natural abilities." A detailed explanation of what aikido really means and of how to apply the principles to our daily lives. A very good book for the westerner to help himself to understand Ki and the universal. A must have for everyones library. Anyone can benefit from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars <br>The abilty to change is within all of us............
You do not need to havean interest in Akido to benefit from reading what he has to say.Heteaches you how to find inner peace, strength and an outlook on life we all should have.

The first half of the book deals with Akido and is quite interesting. The last half, for me, was the best part.It is laid out in short sections and each one will teach you a great deal about yourself and the people around you.

When you have finished the book you will be surprised how much better you feel. You will be able to handle stress, and daily life, in ways you thought you could not.

If you have been looking for a way to reduce stress in your life and at the same time look at things in a more positive way then this is a book worth reading. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Anthology worthy of review
I read this book years ago while studying Aikido in Japan. A pretty good anthology by various practictioners of the Art. The articles provide a rather good context for understanding the Founders life, his spiritual and philosophical thoughts, reflections, and values for an embodied life.

It was the philosophy of O'Sensi that provided the impetus to study and learn this Art. It led to a five year love affair with the mysterious states of consciousness I kept tripping over - and through - or invoking in my life. While I cannot demonstrate what follows via logic, I suspect that any current or former student of Aikido will support my contention that Aikido offers a profound matrix for learning, change, and personal transformation.

Along the way, I discovered Tai Chi Chuan, and gave up Aikido to focus on Tai Chi. My love affair with this Art now over thirty years strong.

If you have an interest in Aikido and its praxis for personal transformation, this book might provoke your interest for checking it out. Here is the disclaimer: you may never be the same again! Internal martial arts such as Aikido and Tai Chi Chuan open doorways into what Castaneda called the "second attention." If you want to find out more, sign up at your local Aikido Dojo, and then hold on for the ride of your life!

4-0 out of 5 stars For a Broader Understanding
Let me make it clear from the get go that my four star rating is not a reflection of whether I actually like the various essays contained within this volume.Rather, my rating reflects my opinion of how much information and insight a reader will gain from this volume regarding the practice and interpretation of aikido, even if some of the essays do not jibe with me.The actual essays themselves are a mixed bag, ranging from the esoteric to the concrete, from the good to the ridiculous.

That, however, is the nature of aikido. The founder of the art, Morihei Ueshiba (known to his followers as O-Sensei), did not intend for aikido to be merely a physical practice.Rather he infused aikido with a philosophy and spiritualism unique among martial arts.As Bob Aubrey puts it in the title essay, the "philosophy of Aikido thus contains a transcendental or spiritual element as well as an ethical element."This allows for the art of aikido to be interpreted and practiced very differently depending on the direction or angle with which one approaches it.

Such interpretations and practices include the prominence of benevolence over violence (A Kind Word Turneth Away Wrath by Terry Dobson), incorporating the principles of aikido into therapy (Aikido: A Model for Brief Strategic Therapy by Donald Saposnek), beginning one's aikido journey at an older than average age (On Getting a Black Belt at Age Fifty-Two by George Leonard) and aikido as facilitating the healing process (Aikido and Healing: Does This Stuff Really Work? by Richard Moon). Many other examples are to found within AIKIDO AND THE NEW WARRIOR, with again, some essays being much better than others.(The book starts with a biography of O-Sensei by John Stevens, which I criticized as too mystical in my review of his book THREE BUDO MASTERS.)Agree with them or not, one will have a better understanding of how aikido is approached by different people after completing this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars not a "how-to" manual
This book is a collection of essays not so much about what Aikido is (and certainly not "how to do it"), but on how the practice of it has changed the lives or shaped the goals of the different contributors. The emphasis of the anthology seems to be an exploration of how the principles of Aikido can be successfully applied to widely divergent fields.Save the one on the cover, there are no pictures.

I first read this over twenty years ago.I found most of the essays forgettable, but there is at least one lustrous pearl among them:George Leonard's, "On Getting a Black Belt at Age Fifty-Two," which appears in about the middle of the volume.

So memorably written and full of genuine wisdom is that particular essay that even now, two decades after reading it, I can still reconstruct its entire structure entirely from memory, and everything about it.This piece alone justifies the price of admission.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent essay collection
This was the first book I ever read on Aikido, and the only reason that I am practicing Aikido today. The essays in the book serve to illuminate Aikido concepts as the apply to many different walks of life: sports, nature, anger, martial arts training, death, aging, etc.The Terry Dobsonessay, 'A Kind Hand Turneth Away Wrath' makes the book worthwhile all byits lonesome.Note that this book contains no information whatsoever onany Aikido techniques.Thank goodness. We definitely don't need anotherredundant Aikido book which does not offer any kind of special perspectiveon the martial art.If you need techniques, buy Westbrook and Ratti's"Aikido And The Dynamic Sphere, the single most comprehensive Aikidobook out there.'The New Warrior' offers many unique perspectives on thepractice of Aikido which cannot be found in any other book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The most information in one place...
There is NOBODY with more knowledge of the history and minutae of Aikido than Stanley Pranin. The research to put this text together was staggering. The only drawback is that the book is not being updated in print form (although it now exists in an online version on the Aikido Journal dot com website).

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Can Find It, Well Worth It!!!
Author Stanley Pranin includes a huge variety of information in this encyclopedia on people in all different branches of Aikido and related arts, places of historical inretest, specific events, different styles of aikido and their founders, and styles related to Aikido.Unfortunately, this volume has been out of print for some time.Pranin does offer an updated CD-ROM version of the Encyclopedia through the online Aikido Journal (formerly Aiki News), but I myself prefer something I can physically handle and access without having to plug in!

Includes information about Ueshiba Morihei, Ueshiba Kisshomaru, Takeda Sokaku, Tohei Koichi, Saotome Mitsugi, Saito Morihiru, Tomiki, and many more.Japanese and non-Japanese instructors are covered, and Stanley Pranin has gone through the trouble of authenticating many of the anks held by prominent Aikido people.I hope someday we will see an updated version in print!

5-0 out of 5 stars Scholarship, not gas
Pranin has researched aikido as has no one else--American OR Japanese--and this book is a goldmine of information that's hard to get elsewhere. Whatever style of aikido you practice (and maybe jujutsu or the ken, too) this book will have information on it. A lot of the scuttlebut on the acrimony between the various teachers of harmony, too. Highly recommended.

Product Description
Morihei Ueshiba, who founded Aikido early in this century, intended that his martial art would give form to profound spiritual truth, and lead to a unification of the world's peoples. He saw Aikido not as a fighting method or as a competitive sport but rather as a means of becoming one with the laws of universal order--ki, or life energy. Unfortunately, the subtleties of Ueshiba's teachings, veiled in the esoteric terminology of Shinto, can be puzzling for even the most advanced practitioners. They are not passed down today, and have never been introduced to the West. Gleason, a fifth-degree (Godan) black belt in Aikido, recognizing the importance of the spiritual aspects of the discipline, researched its roots in Shinto, and in this book is able to offer a clear explanation of Ueshiba's teachings.

•  Unlike the common "how-to" manuals on basic technique, this is the first book to introduce the underlying spiritual principles of Aikido--the elusive concept of kototama (word souls), expressed as one spirit, four souls, three origins, and eight powers--and how they relate to the forms.

•  Teaches the student how to use Aikido to accomplish spiritual goals.

•  Reveals little-known teachings of Shinto and Aikido, relating them to Buddhism, Christianity, and other spiritual teachings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual foundations
Awesome, information packed, comprehensive encyclopedia on the shinto foundations of Aiki. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars soul of aikido
Aikido should really be more about the spiritual aspects of the same rather than merely being a pursuit of martial arts expertise and this well written work by a life long adherent of the same serves as to open the doors to such an understanding for the aikidoka.

spirituality does not simply happen to one, although many a "sensei" seems to think that such does.

Spirituality and awareness must be sought and trained in just as the physical aspects of aikido must be trained in.

Morihei Ueshiba, O Sensei himself, stated that until one awakens to the spiritual reality of life he will never actually practice aikido.

I would and do recommend this book for all aikidoka, espeically for those who teach the art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing content, very poor binding...
William Gleason is amazing. His book is so full of incredible information, it must be read and re-read many times.Unfortunately, the binding is of very poor quality and did not even withstand the first reading before falling apart. This book deserves better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Becoming one with ...
As of this writing I am 67 years old and have only been training at aikido for just less than three years. And as O'Sensei recommends, I do now train every day and am learning to be more perceptive of everything around me. Although difficult to put into words, I believe I was attracted to aikido initially because I felt something was missing in my life and aikido seemed to present an opportunity to find out what that might be within the context of mind/body/spirit. For me, aikido has become a continuous and never ending process of becoming and existing more fully (beginner's mind) in each and every moment. I found what William Gleason Sensei has written in "The Spiritual Foundations of Aikido" helps to confirm what I have been discovering and has helped me to establish some of the initial structures (co-ordinated mind and body) I needed to facilitate the process, or flow, (spiritual) of blending, maintaining connection and becoming one with those with whom I train and all others .

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Reading for Aikidoka, Regretfully Poor Binding.
As a beginning student in the art of Aikido, I hardly feel capable of rendering any worthwhile judgments on the content of this book. It's value to me personally in achieving an understanding of the process of learningthe art has been tremendous, however. Gleason Sensei's explanations andexamples have helped me greatly in making the connection between Aikidotraining and the way of life which this art is truly meant to be. This isone of those books which, while reading, you will continuously say toyourself "Ah - now I understand!" or "Yes - this hashappened to me!" It is a book which you will be inspired to share withyour fellow students as well.

Unfortunately, I must in honesty say thatDestiny Publishers has failed in their effort to provide a lasting mediumfor the words of William Gleason. My paperback copy of this bookdisintegrated into a handful of loose pages before I was halfway finished. It is truly a testament to the inspirational worth of this book to mepersonally, that I overcame my impatience and finished it despitethis.

Still, I would rate this a "must read" for anyoneseriously interested in Aikido - regretfully, I cannot lend you my copy. ... Read more

Product Description
Conflict surrounds us and, at times, consumes us. More then ever, we need to find ways to resolve conflict and communicate effectively.

Unlikely Teachers: Finding the Hidden Gifts in Daily Conflict is a collection of inspirational stories, practices, and reflections on conflict, communication, and relationship. It teaches us how to turn life’s challenges into life teachers. The book includes a foreword by Thomas Crum, author of The Magic of Conflict, Journey to Center, and Three Deep Breaths.

In her workshops and writing, Ms. Ringer employs the martial art aikido as a metaphor and teaching tool. Aikido views the attack as a gift of energy. Unlikely Teachers applies the aikido metaphor to non-physical conflict—what we might call life's "attacks"—such as arguments, everyday hassles, and the more serious problems we all face at some point in our lives. By changing the way we think about what happens to us, we move from reaction to response, become more curious and engaged, and learn that we have more power than we think. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ...Which Keep on Giving
I am reading 'Unlikely Teachers' anew this week after a few years. What a gift this book has been! Its chapters offer perspectives on things that can 'jam up' our lives, make them less-lived than we know. With each situation, we're shown how to meet each moment with Grace.

This is not a 'pop psych' book about making lemonade from lemons. It's an invitation to view things through a very simple but specific process.Judy's simple and clear writing invites my thoughts to leap into today's events; on re-reading, I discover mementos to thoughts prominent during earlier visits.Although my copy hasn't changed, re-reading it brings pieces I remember in line with bits that seem brand new - a sign to me that she isn't just explaining good ideas here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unlikely Teachers: Finding the Hidden Gifts in Daily Conflict
Most people attack in times of conflict. This book advises the opposite:Instead of taking a step into the fray, take a step backwards and give yourself a minute to think before you jump in.You will find you actually learn something about the other person and, more valuable to your learning, you gain insight into your own motivations and attitudes. Thus the other individual in the conflict becomes an "Unlikely Teacher."

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Page.
I found the book to be very useful in many business situations. My success in business depends on building relationships and I have benefited from the ideas presented in Judy's book.I recommend this book to anyone that wants to turn negatives into positives and lead a more productive and healthy life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kudos for Unlikely Teachers!
Judy Ringer's "Unlikely Teachers", with it's wit and wisdom, is truly special. This book provides the opportunity to re-examineyour relationships and daily encounters. Judy's passion is evident and engaging as she teaches us the power of centering and applies it to the difficult dance of human energies. Read and discover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Conflict Book
Judy Ringer's new book "Unlikely Teachers: Finding Hidden Gifts in Daily Conflicts" is a terrific book for those seeking to discover the magic that lies within every conflictual situation. Written with humility and filled with wonderful stories from the author's life and sprinkled with wonderful quotes from experts, "Unlikely Teachers" is a book that I'm likely to put in my carry-on bag for that quick emotional pick-me-up that we all need from time to time.
Throughout the book, the author provides simple and effective suggestions for the reader to practice. My favorite one (or, at least, the one I seem to need to practice more right now) is the "Thank-you-very-much Game" that Ms. Ringer describes on page 149.
Pop-psychology silliness to the contrary, managing conflict effectively is quite difficult, and I very much appreciated the author's honesty and courage in disclosing the simple fact that even though she has been practicing these skills for many years, "I still lose my center frequently. My buttons get pushed, I advocate instead of listen, and I take life way too seriously."
I highly recommend "Unlikely Teachers" to any interested reader. Thank you, Judy Ringer, for such a wonderful book! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Applicable aikido
One thing I noticed while reading this text was that the techniques were simple, common-sense, and didn't seem to need an in-depth understanding of "ki" to work.Tomiki aikido was apparently influenced by the randori (free practice) of judo, and as such it appears that anything needlessly complex was thrown out.The techniques in this book can be used, in conjunction with the "blending" principle key to aikido, to push, pull, or twist an opponent off ballance.I have to say that I was immediately able to grasp the practical nature of the techniques, and incorperate them into live-sparring excercises, mostly grappling. There are techniques for locking, throwing, off-ballancing, counterattacks, kneeling, knife defense, defense vs. strikes, and solo drills. The footwork diagrams were clearly presented.I'd say the addition of counterattacks for the basic techniques was a nice bonus, as was the inclusion of the belt-grading syllibus. On the down side, the photos were pretty bad and some of the explainations were a little brief for my taste. In the end, most of the techniques are fairly common-sense, and can easily be applied within the context of aikido, though making them work against a trained fighter might prove difficult.I'd make this a nice supplementary text for most martial artists, and perhaps a study guide for aikido-ka, especially those studying Tomiki.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Impressive...
Having seen other books on the subject of Aikido, I can definitely say that this one gives credence to Aikido in general and to the Tomiki-style as well.Compared to "Aikido and the Dynamic Sphere" it ranks better than that book in explaining certain fundamental issues such as Tsugi/Ayumi-Ashi (footwork) and helpful falling exercises clearly. Also, the documentaion of effective/non-injurous Atemi-waza in addition to standard Aikido is something not covered in the Dynamic Sphere.Although, I would have to say the organization and total content of Dynamic Sphere was greater...

Aikido:Tradition and Tomiki New free fighting method is an excellent book and I'd recommend it as a necessary supplement...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for all Aikidoka
I used this book when I was training in Tomiki Aikido. It was a great help in learning the basics and I enjoyed reading about the history of Tomiki Aikido. In my opinion the descriptions and photos are good enough to learn from providing you are taking instruction in Tomiki or any other type of Aikido.

The reason I think it's great for all Aikidoka is because all Aikidoka should be familiar with the so-called different styles within Aikido. The meaning of the word Aikido is 'The Way of Harmony' and if this is to be true then all Aikidoka need to respect each other and their so-called styles.

This really is a good book and well worth reading. It's a great study aid in conjuction with the blue book by Lee a Loi, The Dynamic Sphere and of course professional instruction in the art of Aikido.

'Dream in light years, challenge miles, walk step by step'. Living Aikido.

3-0 out of 5 stars The material is good, but the illustration isn't
The material presented in this book is good and pretty extensive. It starts with the fundamental exersices, and then explains numerous applications and techniques. However, the photos are not clear at all. They are b/w, small, and with no arrows to show the directions of the movements. I believe that this book needs to be re-published with higher quality of illustration.

3-0 out of 5 stars The photos are not clear
The material presented in this book is not bad at all, however the photos make it almost impossible to benifit from it. They are small, unclear, b/w, and with no arrows showing the directions of the moves. I believe that this book needs to be re-edited, then published again. ... Read more

Product Description
On Mastering Aikido takes the reader on a journey through the world of the martial art known as Aikido and the teachings of Daniel Linden Sensei and his master, Mitsugi Saotome.Written for advanced students of the art – those who are already conversant with the fundamental teachings – Linden Sensei crosses the line often between teaching and entertaining with humorous, touching stories of years of training in the world’s most difficult martial way.

On Mastering Aikido consists of nine dialogs, an Introduction and Afterward. The dialogs are each devoted to one of the main principles of Aikido knowledge, what Linden Sensei refers to as the Eight Pillars of Aikido Wisdom. We discover a ninth in the Afterward, but as Linden says "It is almost impossible to attain."These dialogs are pleasant to read and clearly explain each of the principles in conversation between teacher and student and sometimes teacher to teacher.Interspersed are stories and anecdotes that bridge the gaps between times, attitudes and enlightenment.

On Mastering Aikido applies as well to the study of Aikido as it does to yoga, karate, judo, basketball, tennis, tango or any activity that uses the human body as a tool. The book’s focus is on physical mastership and the rules which Linden Sensei lays down can be applied to any human endeavor. It was written to be read as a continuous effort, but each chapter can stand alone or it can be selected for specific interest. The overall effect is almost that of a novel as the reader is swept up in Shoshin Aikido Dojo while students are engaged in training, relaxing and work around the school.European journeys become travelogues as the dialog unfolds. The book is engaging, enjoyable, enlightening and humorous. In an age when most Martial Art books read like math textbooks, it is a rare find. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting
What a great title - and a great table of contents.I had so much hope for this book going into it, especially after reading that Sensei Linden uses socratic dialgue rather than narrative.

I did give the book 3 stars - so right off the bat, that should tell you that it's not a horrible book by any means.Let me start with the positive aspects:

PROS

1.Sensei Linden shares his insights into some fundamental principles that have the potential to transform your aikido. Some of these are really important and I appreciated being able to tap into his 35 years of practice.

2.The book has some good anecdotes that are really enjoyable to read. The stories about his fathers and Saotome Sensei are the highlights and particularly touching.

Unfortunately, the book had some flaws, as well:

CONS

1.Too much fluff. The good stuff about mastering Aikido comprises about 15-20% of the book. The rest was his personal reflections, anecdotes, and...

2.Stilted diaolgue.Sensei Linden deserves praise for taking a novel approach to the book. But, the dialogue he uses didn't feel natural many times and it certainly wasn't socratic in any way.Lots of times it seemed to wander off topic.

3.Confusing worldview.Sensei Linden shares some of his view on politics and larger cultural issues related to Aikido and the martial arts.I found some of these points interesting (such as his nuanced view on the use of japanese terms within Aikido training) but some completely out of place (his emotional tribute to President GW Bush).

Overall, I would have preferred that Sensei Linden write two books:one, a personal memoir, in which he could put all his personal anecdotes and opinions on life, politics, and the martial arts. And the second, what this book could have been: a more indepth, focused study on those 9 priniciples that he believes lead to Mastering Aikido.

5-0 out of 5 stars LIFE CHANGING ENLIGHTMENT. A MUST READ
I HAVE BEEN STUDYING THE MARTIAL ARTS AND AIKIDO FOR OVER 20 YEARS. MY COLLECTION OF BOOKS OVER THESE YEARS ARE NUMEROUS AND THERE ARE A VERY FEW THAT I WOULD RECOMMEND TO THE SERIOUS MARTIAL ARTIST. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OUT THERE THAT HAS BEEN WRITTEN ABOUT THIS SUBJECT. I WILL NOT SPOIL THE CONTENTS BUT WILL SAY THAT YOU WILL NOT ONLY HAVE A HARD TIME PUTTING IT DOWN ONCE YOU START TO READ IT, BUT WILL WANT TO RE-READ A COUPLE OF TIMES FOR THE INFORMATION ONE GETS IS TOO MUCH FOR JUST A COUPLE OF READINGS. VERY LIFE CHANGING MATERIAL BETWEEN THE COVERS. IF YOU ARE LOOKING A SERIOUS, DOWN TO EARTH, AND ENLIGHTMENT ABOUT LIFE AND THE ARTS KIND OF BOOK, THEN THIS IS THE FIRST BOOK I WOULD RECOMMEND YOU READ. AND DONT GIVE IT TO SOMEONE ELSE TO READ, YOU WILL NOT GET IT BACK.

5-0 out of 5 stars Taking the Next Step
I have an extensive aikido and martial arts library so I wasn't exactly sure what I would be getting when I'd ordered this book.Generally, books tend to be either technique-based or philosophy-based.This was more along the latter however, it managed to make the connection between technique and the philosophy/principles quite well.It was advertised for advanced students and I definitely agree since I know that I would not have been ready for this if I was just a beginner.Having said that, its messages are timely and appropriate for advanced students who, I believe more often than not have reached a plateau in their training and need a challenge to their egos and their previously accepted way of thinking.Specifically, the Eight Pillars of Aikido Wisdom is an excellent approach where the reader can weigh and consider the topic easily in the dialog writing method.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life.
Thirty years ago I read a book called 'The Ultimate Warrior' written by a man who had studied a bit of esoteric knowledge and used it in the gym to enhance his performance. The knowledge spilled over into his every day life and enhanced that as well. This book has stayed with me for all these years and I have kept going back to its many messages.

It could have been Linden Sensei doing the teaching. On Mastering Aikido is the first thing I have read in three decades that has been as powerful, as revealing, and as moving as The Ultimate Warrior. His descriptions of the art of moving the body expose the deepest secrets of mastery of all physical endeavor. His simple humility and honesty leaves you feeling exposed and deeply touched.

As for the Aikido?I am only a shodan (1st dan) but my understanding and ability tripled by the time I finished reading these dialogs.I now grasp the idea of 'doing less' and of 'listening with the body'. Most importantly I finally grasp the concept of triangulation. Not just the movement in Aikido, but in the universal sense of the 'golden triangle'.Linden Sensei demomstrates the most profound universal truth - that the evolution of the spiral evolves through the triangular. These concepts are very familiar to mathamaticians, but are merely vague ideas to most of us.

To discover that the strength of the galaxy, the spiral power of the hurricane, the delicate nest of a bird and the power of Aikido all flow from the same formula... and to see the actual math and description in print is pretty overwhelming.Linden Sensei does not just repeat the same tired things, he demonstrates the truth in each and every thing he says.

This is an amazing book.

His aikido may be very good, but his perspectives on wider issues pay little respect to the ideals and philosophy of aikido, as expressed by the founder and Saotome Sensei. For those practicing aikido beyond shodan, with deep Bush-Republican views, this will be a good book. For any one with more evolved views, it is an awkward read.

From an integral perspective, setting aside the shadow projections and arrogance, there are interesting points discussed. It can also be a useful exercise to read and see how American Blue vMeme aikido occurs. ... Read more
