High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Amateur wrestling is the most widespread form of sport wrestling. There are two international wrestling styles performed in the Olympic Games under the supervision of FILA: Greco-Roman and freestyle. Freestyle is possibly derived from the English Lancashire style. A similar style, commonly called collegiate, is practiced in colleges and universities, secondary schools, middle schools, and among younger age groups in the United States. Where the style is not specified, this article refers to the international styles played on a mat. ... Read more

Product Description
With the passage of Title IX in 1972 in the UnitedStates, women¿s athletic participation grewexponentially at the high school and collegiatelevels. During the same time period, however, manycollegiate male wrestling programs were eliminated. Despite the huge increases in men¿sathletics budgets, and athletic director¿sdecisions to spend money in places other thanwrestling, Title IX has become the scapegoat forthose cuts. In the context of these issues, femaleparticipation in wrestling blends andproblematizes the separation of these two sides. With the general lack of media attention paid tothe sport of wrestling, it is not surprising thatgirls¿ and women¿s wrestling receives little mediaattention. Yet the growing number of participantsat the high school level ¿ and more importantlytheir success there, against boys ¿ attracted asmall flurry of media coverage. Moreover, wrestlingperiodicals also provide limited coverage of elitewomen wrestlers. In this paper, I analyze mediarepresentations of female amateur wrestling andissues of Title IX in mainstream media sources, wrestling periodicals and scholarly periodicals. ... Read more

Excerpt: Collegiate wrestling, sometimes known in the United States as Folkstyle wrestling, is a style of amateur wrestling practiced at the collegiate and university level in the United States. Collegiate wrestling, by and large, emerged from the folk wrestling styles practiced in the early history of the United States. This style, with some slight modifications, is also practiced at the high school and middle school levels, and also among younger participants, where it is known as scholastic wrestling. These names help distinguish collegiate wrestling from other styles of wrestling that are practiced around the world such as those in the Olympic Games: Freestyle wrestling and Greco-Roman wrestling. Collegiate wrestling, like its international counterpart, freestyle wrestling, has its greatest origins in catch-as-catch-can wrestling and, in both styles, the ultimate goal is to pin the opponent to the mat, which results in an immediate win. Collegiate and freestyle wrestling, unlike Greco-Roman, also both allow the use of the wrestler's or his opponent's legs in offense and defense. Yet collegiate wrestling has had so many influences from the wide variety of folk wrestling styles brought into the country that it has become distinctly American. In collegiate wrestling, great emphasis is placed on one wrestler's control of the opponent on the mat, usually by controlling the opponent's legs or torso. Boxing, kickboxing, amateur wrestling, Puroresu, mixed martial arts and fencing are examples of combat sports. The techniques used can be categorized into three domains: striking, grappling, and weapon usage. Some rule-sets specialize in one area, while others allow overlap. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is overpriced and a rip off
This "book" is only 103 pages long and too generalized to be of any value to anyone who is interested in any martial art.I have practiced TKD for 47 years, Western boxing for 10 years, Judo for 5, wing chun for 5, and am an instructor in Krav Maga.I do not recommend this book for anyone --the various chapters are so simple and rudimentary that they only contain information that could easily be found on Wikipedia.Poor quality and an unrealistic price make this a book to avoid. ... Chapters: Pankration, Greek Wrestling, Amateur Pankration. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 28. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Pankration (pronounced or ; from Ancient Greek: "all-in wrestling" Modern Greek: ) is a combat sport introduced into the Greek Olympic Games in 648 BC and founded as a blend of boxing and wrestling. The term comes from the Ancient Greek , literally meaning "all powers" from (pan) "all" + (kratos) "strength" or "power". It is also used to describe the sport's contemporary variations. Some consider it as the first all-encompassing fighting system in human history. It is also arguable that pankration competitions in antiquity were the closest an athletic event has come to outright, no-rules, empty hand combat. Modern mixed martial arts competitions have come to feature many of the same methods that were used in pankration competitions in the ancient Greek world. In Greek mythology it was said that the heroes Heracles and Theseus invented pankration as a result of using both wrestling and boxing in their confrontations with opponents. Theseus was said to have utilized his extraordinary pankration skills to defeat the dreaded Minotaur in the Labyrinth. Heracles was said to have subdued the Nemean lion using pankration, and was often depicted in ancient artwork doing that. In this context, it should be noted that pankration was also referred to as pammachon or pammachion ( or ), meaning "total combat", from -, pn-, "all-" or "total", and , mach, "combat". The term pammachon was older, and would later become used less than the term pankration. The mainstream academic view has been that pankration was the product of the development of archaic Greek society of the seventh century BC, whereby, as the need for expression in violent sport increased, pankration filled ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=24245 ... High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Yeti or Abominable Snowman is a mythological creature and an ape-like cryptid said to inhabit the Himalayan region of Nepal and Tibet. The names Yeti and Meh-Teh are commonly used by the people indigenous to the region, and are part of their history and mythology.
