Product Description
This early work is a collection of familiar essays written in a relaxed and graceful style by an expert angler. His tales of adventure on lake and stream will reward philosophers with thought, and naturalists with beauty. Thoroughly recommended for inclusion on the bookshelf of any fishing enthusiast or historian. Contents Include: The Brotherhood of Peter; Trout and the Old Gentleman; The purist and the Dub; In Defense of Worms; The Supercilious Salmon; Heart or Belly; Men I Won't Fish With; Worse and Less of It; Water-Borne; and Rivers. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brown Trout Explained
A thorough trout fisherman wants an explanation of the hard hitting, mysterious Brown Trout--it's good to know your subject.A fish biologist or a wood carver wants to understand the beautiful and elusive SALMO TRUTTA.

THE COMPLEAT BROWN TROUT by Cecil E. Heacox, Illustrated by Wayne Trimm, is the book I was looking for after many mistakes in the carving and painting of my wooden fish.

I catch and release the trout, so I have little time to study a fish for fear of lessening its survival. This all changes with the author and illustrator's excellent coverage of the Brown. And, I mean the book is literally an inside-out depiction of the Brown. Included are initial stocking records, and how to fish for the trout from author Heacox, to the beautifully detailed plates by artist Trimm.

I only learned of THE COMPLEAT BROWN TROUT, published in 1974, by happenstance. My neighbor has about everything written about trout or bamboo rods.He is generous in lending me things that advance my knowledge.I read the neighbor's copy and immediately searched for my own copy.Books on trout and trout fishing are niche market.Anyone interested should find this first edition book before it becomes a truly expensive collectible.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the Dust Jacket:
"This is the first comprehensive, in-depth study of the brown trout, Salmo trutta: its origin, distribution, anatomy, life history, diet, the methods used to manage and propagate it; and the tactics and tackle that have been developed to fish for it.This book was written for the dedicated angler who realizes that the more he knows about a fish the more he will enjoy angling for it." ... Amazon.com Review
Origins returns to print the classic 1962 display ofangling's, er, essay, "The Treatise of Fishing with an Angle." Pre-dating Izaak Walton's The Compleat Anglerby a couple of centuries, "Treatise" is a remarkable work on severallevels, not the least of which is that its author was a woman, DameJuliana Berners. Reportedly a nun of noble birth, she was the first toraise the leisurely pursuit of fishing to what was then the far morevenerable rank of hunting. Fishing with a rod and a line, shesuggested, brings to the angler good spirits and enhances life. Evenif the intrepid angler catches nothing, Berners allows that "at thevery least, he will have his wholesome and merry walk at his own ease, and also many a sweet breath of plants and flowers that will make himright hungry and put his body in good condition. He will hear themelodies of the harmonies of the birds...." To a large degree, thisconceit--that angling is much more than catching fish--has been thebedrock of our best fishing literature ever since. Berners joyfullygoes on with these pleasures, but she also dispenses plenty of theoryand practice--indeed, her "Treatise" is the first codification offishing as sport--from how to make a rod and tie a fly to what makes agood fishing hole. Remarkably, much of her thinking still holds.

The real fun of Origins is its presentation. McDonald, theauthor of several angling books, pens provocative essays on Berners'slegend, her text's place at the tippet of fishing literature, and itscontribution--with color illustrations--to the art of flytying. Still, the centerpiece is the "Treatise" itself, which McDonaldshowcases in a trio of formats: an easily readable modernization, plusfacsimiles of Dame Julia's original 1450 manuscript and its 1496printing, complete with woodcuts. For booklovers with an angle, thisis the biblio-equivalent of trophy trout. --Jeff Silverman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Finest Books on Fly Fishing You Will Ever Read...
This book is something of a life-work by John McDonald. It is a beautiful study of Dame Juliana Berner's manuscript that dates back to the Middle Ages.It contains facimile of the manuscript, as well as translation, and notes.

If you have not read this book, you must, or you will have missed out on one of the great works of sporting literature.I have also tied some of the flies she describes but as of yet, I have been unable to use any of them.I love seeing the "yellow leaper" in my fly box and simply cannot bring myself to use it.

Thank you Juliana Berners, and thank you, John McDonald for bringing to us, such wonderful and thoughtful insight to the mystery of the sport of fly fishing. ... Read more

Published to tie in with a BBC2 television series, this is the story of the piscatorial adventures of Chris Yates and Bob James, accompanied by film-maker Hugh Miles. Their riverside banter and differing techniques offer insights into fish, fishing, and what fires people with a passion for angling. ... Read more
