Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Angling," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Angling in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Angling when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Angling, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
ly fishing transcends the classification of "sport" for many anglers. For some, it is also an art and a sacred religion that celebrates the solitude experienced on a peaceful river, the excitement of following instincts and hunches, and the special bond between people who share a passion.

In the Gentlemen’s Society of Angling, first-time author Jay Hill introduces you to a group of men from the 1930s, whose love for fishing was lived out on the banks of the limestone creeks in Pennsylvania. Creeks that were "the stuff of legend. Gentle flows. Clean. Stream-borne brook trout. If fly fishing has roots, these streams are among those where they were laid down."

These men convened at a cabin up in the deep woods, where they shared tall-tale stories, camaraderie, and the unanimous goal to preserve the waters they loved. This would have all been forgotten as time marched on if they had not kept a journal—a journal found by two friends on a fishing trip many years later. A journal that brought to life the past.

Enter a time when anglers hung their lines to cure and the hot topic was gut leaders. This nostalgic tale brings to life a secret angling society that will open your eyes to the extraordinary times of a group of friends that all shared the timeless love of fly fishing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Literary Work Of Angling Art
This novella weaves a narrator's present passion for angling with the history of a group of passionate anglers from a generation past. The plot is excellent: a westerner from Colorado visits Pennsylvania for a fly fishing vacation, and he and his fishing buddy discover the remains of an old cabin along a favorite stream, and within the cabin they find a worn, yet legible, fishing journal authored by a group of long gone fly fishers -- The Gentlemen's Society of Angling.

The book then travels back in time to their collective story through journal entries and historical narrative. There are so many fine stories: a man buys some land and builds a fishing cabin and is joined in the endeavor by the very same men who sold him the property; a man meets a master and becomes an apprentice rod builder; summer camp kids are taught to fish for trout. Jay Hill's warm, lyrical prose effectively and beautifully ties these threads together, and the finished tale of fly fishing, fly rod construction, and friendship is to literature what a masterfully tied Royal Coachman is to a fly fisher -- a work of Art with a capital A.

2-0 out of 5 stars Was the editor on vacation?
I wanted to enjoy this book, but the lack of good editing and the lack of continuity between mini-stories hurt the pleasure of reading the few good sections.

At one point, we were being told a story, about a story, of a story, of a story about a legend. The larger problem is that the author switches narrators, place, and time without any change in style. So the language and structure used by an Indian's mother is the same as a Pittsburgh banker.

Clearly the author is often writing about things outside his experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars About friendships
While this book has much about fly fishing, and a fascinating chapter on the crafting of bamboo fishing rods, it's really about the friendships between a group of men. It's a fine read, gentle and lyrical, and will take you to another time and place. ... Read more
