High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Origins of Australian football are obscure and still the subject of much debate. The earliest accounts of "foot-ball" games in Australia dates back to the 1840s and the earliest accounts of clubs formed to play football date to the early 1850s. Football in the early years was played by a variety of rules (and sometimes few rules at all) though the style of football that clubs in Victoria played were similar to each other and also the modern game of Australian football. Though football became increasingly common between 1856 and 1858, written details are difficult to find as most of these matches were either poorly documented. ... Read more

Product Description
The success of Australian Rules football, which emerged from a innovative game in the mid-1900s and grown into a multi-billion dollar industry and social institution of the 21st century, owes much of this success to the sustained following of women. In 2006 womens membership was approximately 50% of members in the premier competition, Australian Football League. This high proportion of women fans differentiates Australian Rules football to many other football codes. This book will fill the gaps of official histories where women have been marginalised, trivialized or tokenized. It will also provide a different perspective on football with the author being Western Australian. It traces women?s historical involvement with the game since the 1900s. It examines the myriad roles women play in the maintenance of the game. The new model of female fandom proposed provides a parallel to the celebrity sport hero phenomenon. The book also examines those females who dare to either play the game or work in the industry. This book will be of interest to scholars of sport and society, gender studies, media studies, and Australian history; to sporting administrators and competitors; media commentators and fans of Australian Rules football particularly women. ... Excerpt: Results and statistics for the Victorian Football League season of 1927. In 1927, the VFL competition consisted of twelve teams of 18 on-the-field players each, with no "reserves", although any of the 18 players who had left the playing field for any reason could later resume their place on the field at any time during the match. Teams played each other in a home-and-away season of 18 rounds; matches 12 to 17 were the "home-and-way reverse" of matches 1 to 6, and match 18 the "home-and-way reverse" of match 9. Once the 18 round home-and-away season had finished, the 1927 VFL Premiers were determined by the specific format and conventions of the amended "Argus system". Collingwood defeated Richmond 2.13 (25) to 1.7 (13), in front of a crowd of 34,511 people. (For an explanation of scoring see Australian rules football). ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=10747009 ... The Labor government of Premier William Forgan Smith was seeking a third term in office. During the previous term, the Country and United Australia parties had emerged out of the united Country and Progressive National Party , which had represented conservative forces for over a decade. The most notable feature of the election campaign was the Protestant Labor Party , established in 1937, which claimed that the Forgan Smith Ministry was disproportionately Catholic and made extravagant claims that three-quarters of all police and public servants in the State were Catholic. Despite the campaign, Labor only lost one seat, Kelvin Grove, to the party. The unsuccessful Protestant Labor candidate for Ithaca, George Webb, lodged a petition against the return of Labor member Ned Hanlon . He was initially successful in the Supreme Court when the case was heard by Justice E.A.
