Product Description

With its solo set-up, more subdued speeds, and endlessly varying events and courses, autocross is the easiest, safest,  and least expensive way to get into motorsports.  Anyone with a helmet and a car can do it.  Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have some driving skills, which is where this book comes in.  As a veteran racer and professional driving coach, Ross Bentley knows what it takes to compete and to win, and he gives readers the benefit of that knowledge in Speed Secrets 7:  Autocross Driving Fundamentals.

The first in the Speed Secrets series to address a specific form of racing, this volume focuses on the skills critical to autocross success:  car handling and driver skill at high speeds on unique courses.  Though slower than other motorsports in absolute terms, autocross, with its high number of turns per minute, can challenge even the most expert driver.  Adapting his time-proven method of teaching drivers how to go fast, Bentley clearly details the steps and techniques that help autocross drivers maintain control and dominate a course at speed.  Though specific to autocross, and essential to mastering its particular challenges, his advice and instruction in this book will prove invaluable to drivers who go on to road racing as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ross Bentley's Winning Auto-X Techniques
When I first bought this book I wasn't expecting much since there were already 5 books in the Speed Secrets Series.Luckily I was surprised when I found out this book would become my favorite in the series.I've been driving for 2 years now, and one of the first things I did was to buy the first Speed Secrets. That alone made my learning curve very sharp, from karts to cars I used his books to help me become a podium driver. As a fan of his series it appears as though he's taken the best out of his other books and combined them along with specific Auto-x techniques to make this book.Bentley goes through actual physical and mental techniques to help you maximize your seat time and to give you the foundation to practice while you're at home. This is the one in the series I take with me to track days and Auto-x's to review before my sessions.I've bought 3 copies in the past month as presents for friends that are also drivers.Winning Auto-X Techniques is easily the best driving handbook for any racer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch
This book encompasses everything that an autocross driver needs to know without any extra fluff. There is a lot of info here for such a short read. I recommend that this book be combined with regular autocross events to practice what is learned. It also helps to visualize yourself in the car doing the techniques you just learned. The "Speed Secrets" text pops out every couple pages to summarize a lesson into a single repeatable phrase. There is even a list of all the "Secrets" at the back of the book if you don't take notes well. I recommend that both novice and veteran drivers alike read this book. You will find something that helps.

Buy it, read it, apply it, you will be faster.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference
If you have read the first speed secrets book, there is a lot of duplicated info but if not the book stands on it's own well.Great reference!

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome book
As an experience autocrosser, I highly recommend this book for the beginner or the experienced weekend warrior. It is very well written, and should help anyone to improve their technique.

4-0 out of 5 stars Detailed planning is key
I thought this was a great book to help me look at how I can improve in my Solo racing. This book goes into great detail on not just driving techniques, but the need to plan before and after your runs. He covers topics I wouldn't have thought of as helpful to really improving my times. This is my 3rd season in Solo and I think it will be invaluable as I move up a class this season to try and become a better driver. If there is one thing to take away from the book, it's to remember to fix the driver before you try and fix the car.
I think this is a great book for everyone who Solo races whether novice or seasoned veteran. ... Read more

Product Description
Autocross is the most accessible form of motorsports for the sports car enthusiast. With many clubs sanctioning events, it is possible to attend an event nearly every weekend in many areas. The low-risk format allows drivers to participate without needing to extensively modify their car for safety. Autocross events are held all across the United States and Canada. These events allow the average person to participate with their typical street cars. Because of the nature of the sport, drivers of many different skill levels and goals participate together. Casual drivers out for a good time and serious competitors with loads of talent can run in the same event and all have fun.
How to Autocross covers everything you need to know to get behind the wheel and start autocrossing. It covers basic modifications such as tire pressures, alignment, and dampers, to more advanced modifications that go beyond the stock classes. Because autocross is a test of driver skill, there is a heavy emphasis on driving and car control, with coverage on accelerating, braking, weight transfer, shifting, corners, slaloms, and finding that perfect line. Information is also included on car classes, driver schools, data logging, how events are typically run, and how to find events in your area.
If you would like to start racing on a budget, and want to have a blast on weekends showing off your car and your driving skills, How to Autocross is a great guide to get you started! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for a novice
I have not gotten to autocross yet, and frankly, not knowing much about it made it seem very intimidating. After reading this book, I'm excited to see what this is all about, and after running a couple this spring, looking back through the book to see what clicks. Great read, alot of good informative photos, must have for a racing junkie.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive beginners guide to Autocross
This is a fairly comprehensive beginners guide to autocross.

Howe has effectively explained what autocross is, and made it simple for the beginner.

Basic driving techniques are well explained as well, and many that are not beginners can probably learn something from a thorough read.

One of the most valuable aspects of the book is the the vast collection of photos. There are many examples of how to drive, and how not to drive, on an autocross course.

I also appreciated the breakdown of the classes of cars, and the general discussion of the types of modifications allowed in each class.

Those that aspire to be competitive in a particular class will appreciate this, as it becomes apparent that some of the classes have a relatively low entry point as far as cost of the car and any modifications is concerned, while other classes require a serious commitment in cash if to make a car competitive. This is all well known to folks with a little experience, but to the rank beginner this is the fastest way to gain some familiarity with the different classes.Reading this book first will make reading the Solo rule book a bit easier.

Highly recommended for anyone serious about autocross.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Review of the topic
The book accomplishes its' goal of explaining autocross techniques. However, casting no aspersions against the book, autocross is learned by practice and watching others practice far more than than by reading. While I can read and understand the text, it occurred to me that the pictures were as much if not more informative in illustrating what to do or not do. The pictures are instructive as is watching others except with freeze frame showing the consequences of right or wrong moves. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Little value for autocross drivers
I have a feeling that this book is of little value for autocross drivers. For example, there is an advise in the book "to follow the slalom of direct line of pylons with constant throttle application". This is quite inefficient. What is much better upon my opinion is to release the throttle (or even press brake lightly for slow turns) on straight to transfer ahead the weight of the car, wait until the front suspension gets loaded, rotate the steering wheel to make the car enter the turn, and then apply throttle while you are unwinding the steering wheel exiting the corner. Any beginner who takes autocross courses, two hours daily, will be able to effectively apply this "brake-steer-throttle" technique on 5th or 10th lesson.

What I recommend is "Secrets of Solo Racing: Expert Techniques for Autocross and Time Trials" by Henry Watts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brief, concise, truthful
This is a good book about autocross - brief, concise, truthful and accurate. Great deal of attention throughout the book is paid to suspension behavior, weight distribution and the smoothness of the driver's movement. What I liked most in the book is the advise to use left-foot-braking during the transition from braking to acceleration and vice versa. This helps to avoid excessive suspension fluctuation and provides slow, smooth weight transfer. It is good to use this technique for RWD cars and even better for FWD cars. The author gives an exercise:

"Accelerate to thirty mph. As you reach the point where you wish to brake, start to apply braking pressure with your left foot, and at the same time, lift your right foot slowly off the accelerator Increase your braking pressure to reach ten mile per hour at the pylon. As you pass the pylon at then mph, reapply accelerator pressure, and start releasing braking pressure."

The author states that the tire is the most important part of the car. I agree with that, and recommend you to read "Racing & High Performance Tire" by Paul Haney.

In addition to this book I recommend the "Secrets of Solo Racing" by Henry Watts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Offers great tips from all aspects of autocross. Everything from choosing a car, car classes, seating position, driving techniques, and more. I use the techniques out in the track and I can confidently say this book made me faster.

5-0 out of 5 stars Autocross vs. Racing
There's a difference between racing and running an autocross. I've done both. The old adage is that most great autocross drivers can become really good road racers. On the other hand not all road racers can become great at running an autocross. I think there's a lot of truth to that.

3-0 out of 5 stars Looking to begin racing & searching for a guide how
I've been interested in getting into autocrossing and purchased this book in hopes it would help me find my way. The book is full of color pictures, many of which I found interesting but after a while began to feel it took away from the substance of the written material. I will say the book also does a nice job of explaining the various SCCA classes and what is required to meet the class specifications.

I also recently read another book that talks about how people can begin participating in motorsports including autocrossing - "Go Ahead - Take the Wheel" by Dave Gran. I would highly recommend that book to anyone interested in motorsports! Actually, if one buys both books and use them together, you'll have all the information one could need to get into autocrossing (and other forms of racing Dave talks about in his book).

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks references to the other titles
I like this paperback very much for its photos: much of the space on pages is covered by great exciting pictures with valuable comments under each image.

This book is the unsurpassed reference on how to choose the best class for SCCA autocross; it has excellent descriptions of requirements of each class, actual for 2006 season.

The major drawback of this book is the lack of references section. When you complete this book, you have no directions where to proceed; you have no idea of further reading. When the author quotes somebody, he gives no source. I see no shame in exposing the source. All prominent writers are dwarves standing on the shoulders of giants (previous writers). There are also errors in the names of products: "Motul" damper on page 25 (should be "Moton"), "Scroth" on page 113 (should be "Schroth"). The second edition of this book is desired.

While most of the book is devoted to differences in SCCA classes, very little attention is given to driving techniques. For example, the author devotes only a quarter of textual page to "oversteer & understeer" with no illustrations. As a comparison, Carl Lopez in his famous title "Going Faster" gives 17 pages full of illustrations to explain these modes of car behavior. I highly recommend "Going Faster" to any autocrosser.

In addition to this book, I would recommend "Winning Autocross Solo II Competition" by R. H. Turner & J.B. Miles; and "Secrets of Solo Racing" by Henry A. Watts

If you need something deep on driving techniques (which apply to any motorsport, not just autocross), I would recommend "Competition Driving" by Alain Prost, "The Technique of Motor Racing" by Piero Taruffi, "Driving in Competition" by Alan Johnson and "Sports Car and Competition Driving" by Paul Frere.

Races are commonly held on road racing or medium sized go-kart tracks with an off-road section in the infield. Most supermoto race tracks are typically configured with approximately 70% tarmac and 30% dirt with small jumps but a dirt section is not required. The motorcycles used are frequently custom-created combinations of off-road motorcycles and road-racing wheels/tires, known as 'supermotard' bikes. Riders also wear a combination of road race and offroad equipment, normally road racing leathers and motocross helmets and boots. Unlike normal motorcycle racing, the emphasis lies on slower speeds-typically less than 100 mph (160 km/h)- on short, technical tracks, where rider skill matters more than outright machine performance. Supermoto has its origins in the 1970s where ABC's Wide World of Sports was the highest-rated sports show in the United States. In 1979, ABC commissioned a made-for-TV event to be included in the series, named Superbikers, whose intention was to find the ultimate all-around motorcycle racer. Superbikers was then manifested as a yearly event run at southern California's Carlsbad Raceway.
