If you are looking for a book like this, this is it. I like his other one a little better.

no photos, but great techniques. The sketches are helpfull, but one is misprinted. I really had to read it, over and over, to discover the the printed overlay was backwards and upside down.

Great book for practical people, young and aging women, it is still the best guide for looking better naturally.he tells us how to mix up personal formulae of make up, great facial exercises neccessary for even young skin to keep it firm and healthy, based on common sense and time tested facts.Great man, great philosophy, great book.

I now have two of Way Bandys books and I do find this one...Styling your Face to be a little more interesting. My main complaint with both books are the poor illustrations. I expected to see his work shown on actual people. The only thing that saved me from disliking this book is the fact that I am already familiar with his work. I think if someone just picked up this book expecting a visual feast, they would be very disappointed. Having said all that, his work does stand the test of time and you can't say that about too many makeup artists.

Book Description
After his post-war adventures in movies in New York (see Me Bandy, You Cissie) our hero returns to his Ottawa Valley home in 1923. Through a series of misunderstandings Bandy becomes the official Liberal candidate in a by-election and to the horror of the Liberal Party leaders – especially Prime Minister Mackenzie King – he wins, takes his seat in the House of Commons, and proceeds to wreak havoc there.

To finance his campaign he goes into business with Gallop’s local tycoon to smuggle booze into the Prohibition-hit United States, a profitable business until the unpleasantness with the U.S. authorities and all the shooting and wounding. But it does make him a House of Commons authority on corruption in the Canadian government, which leads to his lightning elevation to Mackenzie King’s Cabinet as Minister of Defence. Book Description
Bartholomew Bandy has become an air ace. On the ground he causes disasters wherever he goes, but in the air he’s deadly, shooting down dozens of German planes in the course of thrilling aerial combats. To the amazement of all who know him he becomes Lieut. Col. Bandy and thanks to his new rank he meets all sorts of people, including his fiancee’s memorable family. As a handy (but disposable) war hero, he encounters a number of hair-raising adventures, not to mention English plumbing and an unforgettable honeymoon night. That’s Me In The Middle is exciting, full of military action in the trenches and in the air, and, as it continues to flirt with history, very funny. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Three Cheers for Donald Jack
I found a British paperback edition of this book used in 1984.Since then I have sporadically searched for the rest of "The Bandy Papers" (including several searches of Amazon.com) without success.

I have to agree with the other reviewers here that it was absolutely hilarious. Although I can't remember much of the book specifically, I recall that it was full of absurd situations of the "Jeeves and Wooster" sort.

(BTW if you've been under the impression that P.G. Wodehouse wrote some kind of ponderous British literature, you have two surprises in store.) I can't understand why Jack has not enjoyed a much wider audience, and he's going straight to the top of my Christmas wish list.

5-0 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud
"That's Me In The Middle"-Vol.2 of the hilarious Bandy papers will have you in stitches. Warning: Your wife probably will ban the reading of this one in bed- the chuckles and titters will drive your spouse nuts. The exploits of Bartholomew Bandy during WWI written by an author who understands human nature, military snafus and aviation. This series of books constitute the funniest fiction I've encountered in the english language. If you enjoy the short stories of Patrick McManus you'll love Donald Jack's novels!

5-0 out of 5 stars A hilarious read!
In 1980, I was travelling in Europe and saw "That's Me in the Middle" in a used book store in Copenhagen.I was attracted to it for two reasons--1) It had WWI aircraft on the cover and I like books on that period, and 2) It was in English...I picked it up without a second look.

When I left town on the train, I happened to be in the First Class car.As I settled down and began reading about Bart Bandy, I kept having to go out into the hallway to laugh out loud, so as not to irritate the various German businessmen and French society ladies with whom I shared the compartment. It was the funniest book I had ever read! After laughing for a while, wiping my eyes, and taking a deep breath or two, I would go back into the compartment, sit down, and start reading, only to have to burst out into the hall again in a few minutes.

Since that time, I have managed to find and read all of the Bandy Papers. They are all just as funny, and are true to the hilarious character of Bartholomew Bandy. Donald Jack writes a good historical novel, and creates such a group of idiosynchratic characters that we immediately recognize. Then, he weaves them all into situations that are just plain funny! I would recommend any of the Bandy Papers and, as this was the first I had read, it holds a special place for me.

Enjoy!

Authors William Easum and Thomas Bandy argue that there are two types ofchurches in existence today--those that are perishing and those that arethriving. Growing Spiritual Redwoods pinpoints methods that sustainchurch growth and reveals how the archaic implementation of "dogma, doctrine, and historical knowledge" robs some churches from ministering to its members.According to the authors, putting aside "decision-makers" for "disciple-makers,"church work for personal fulfillment, and hierarchy for organism are a few ofthe facets of change that will alter the leadership, worship, and methodology ofany church, lending itself to further growth, evangelism, and outreach. Whilethe authors are leading a growing trend of unconventional ways to church God'speople, it is beneficial to remember that specific methodology is notnecessarily capable of producing success--God's word has the capacity to changepeople no matter what the human motivation or program might be. AlthoughGrowing Spiritual Redwoods can seem like a business plan for church life,Easum and Bandy give substantial documentation and practical application forwhat works to make a strong 21st-century church. --Jill HeatherlyDownload Description
Growing Spiritual Redwoods is an effort to help church leaders answer the kinds of questions that confront congregations and Christians in this era of rapid and uncertain change in the church, questions such as: Are you committed to Jesus Christ, or to a particular doctrine, denomination, or church? Do you speak of faith as an experience of Christ, or as a heritage that you protect? Do you believe that ministry is to make disciples or members? William Easum and Thomas Bandy believe that deep spiritual vitality and an openness to the new thing that God is doing will characterize the "spiritual redwoods" that emerge from this time of change. Congregations to whom this term can be applied do not spring spontaneously into existence, nor are they built in a mechanical, by-the-numbers fashion. Instead, they are grown, and providing the environment that will grow these vigorous centers of witness and mission is the crucial task of church leadership in our time. Some of the components of this task include: Cultivating the passion for the transforming experience of Jesus, in individuals and in church communities. Enabling worship that feeds new life in multiple ways, and which is indigenous to the forest from which spiritual redwoods grow. Nurturing organisms designed to release mission, make disciples, deepen faith, and proclaim God. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Are You Experienced?

North Americans do not understand Christian doctrine and they do not want to understand it.So say authors Easum and Bandy who then continue: "but most important - and this is the key discovery at the end of the 20th Century - they do not need to understand it!"(p. 41).What they need, instead of doctrine, is a life-transforming "experience with Jesus" and "relationship with Jesus".(pp. 49, 52, 53, 55, et seq.).

Who is this Relationship Jesus? The authors are not sure who he is, but they know who he is not.He is not Lord, or Messiah, or King, or Son of God, or even Savior because such titles "have become so laden with underlying nuances that seekers are too nervous to consider them."(p. 39.)And what of "Christ"?Easum and Bandy say that term "carries an enormous weight of complex dogma, and invites seekers into an arena of religious disagreement ... that is (to them) frightening in its irrelevance."(p. 39.)Under no circumstances must doctrine be allowed to frighten or unnerve the seekers as they experience Relationship Jesus.Seekers must be free to imagine this Jesus in any way they wish. The authors tell us that no less an authority than the Council of Chalcedon "resolved conflict about the person and work of Jesus by declaring that every perspective was both right and wrong."(p. 52.)Relationship Jesus is everything you want him to be and, apparently, he is also not everything you want him to be.Go figure.

There is one point of doctrine the authors tolerate and that is the Incarnation. But dogma-fearing North Americans need not fret, as the authors quickly assure them that:"Only the mysterious paradox of the incarnation is essential to Christian faith. All else is metaphor."(p.54.)That "all else" of non-essential metaphor would include, by the way, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection.

This book thrives on the false dichotomy of "either doctrine or experience."Time and again the authors dismiss doctrine as an impediment to experience as shown in such statements as "Are you committed to Jesus Christ ... or to a particular doctrine" and "Do you speak of faith as an experience with Christ or as a heritage to protect" and "Understanding the saving grace of God in a rationally consistent, historically grounded way is not important to most Americans; Experiencing that saving grace ... is everything."(pp. 14, 41.)

Could it be that one can hold fast to that doctrine first delivered by the Apostles and still experience the Lord Jesus Christ? And by the "Lord Jesus Christ" I do not mean the amorphous, metaphorical, mystical Jesus of Easum and Bandy who is all things to all men, be they right or wrong.I mean the man who was born of a virgin, crucified under Pontius Pilate, suffered, died and was buried, rose again in accordance with the Scriptures and ascended into heaven. That Jesus! The same Apostles who delivered the doctrine also experienced that Jesus.Paul, who warned the Galatians to not receive any other gospel than the one he preached, also prayed that the Ephesians would be inwardly enlightened so as to comprehend "what is the breadth and width and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up with all the fullness of God."(Eph. 3:18-19.)Now that is an experience!

So doctrine and experience are not mutually exclusive. The real question is whether they are mutually dependent. That is, can someone experience Jesus, the real and true Jesus, without embracing sound Christian doctrine.Just as there is true doctrine and a true Jesus who can be experienced, there is also false doctrine and, the Lord warned, a false Jesus that can be experienced.Because Easum and Bandy reject sound doctrine and even reason itself, they have no ability to discern the true from the false.

Now, I know the postmoderns out there will shake their heads and say, "The poor boy just doesn't get it.Hasn't he heard? There are no absolutes, there are no meta-narratives, there are no universal truths. There is no true Jesus, there is no false Jesus. There is just 'Jesus', and those Chalcedons had it right, all perceptions of Jesus (and of everything else) are both right and wrong."Well, if the postmoderns are right, then their "Jesus" is nothing more than a contentless banner, to use Francis Schaeffer's phrase. It is just a label used to generate interest in an undefinable "experience."They could call it anything: Jesus or Buddha or Krishna or Mithra or Mothra or whatever. It doesn't matter. And they may actually have an experience, but ultimately their experience will not matter either because it is just as contentless as the label they put on it.The secular philosophers came to this dead-end conclusion long ago.The church philosophers like Easum and Bandy are lagging behind. But they will get there eventually. Its just a matter of time.

There is no meaning and there is no hope in Relationship Jesus, or in the experiences he might bestow. But there is meaning and hope in the true Jesus, a "living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead." (1 Pet. 1:3.)May you experience this Jesus soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lost in the Forest
Bandy's work is always thought provoking, and this book is, too.He offers a pretty accurate assessment of the problems of current church "life."However, I am not as certain that his answers are the "answer."But worth reading and pondering. His vision of the future church is certainly radically different than most of us envision.

2-0 out of 5 stars Challenge without answers
Easum and Bandy make excellent points regarding the difficulties of traditional churches.Who can argue with the reality of decline; the substitution for institutional maintenance for evangelism?Unfortunately their response to the challenge is gimmicky and shallow. For example, they envision "worship" consisting of chats with a holographic Jesus and Mary on the challenges of family life.Is such a retreat into entertainment the only way to reach today's generation? Is it even possible for such entertainment to be authentic worship, or have we settled for a Disneyland version of reality? The authors don't consider such questions, nor do they address the question of resources, envisioning the megachurch, with its wealth, to be the only option for the future.Current trends indicate the future is not quite so monolithic. There are other books tackling these issues with far more practical advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Redwoods" is a little scary but very thought provoking!
I picked up "Growing Spiritual Redwoods" not long after reading Bill Easum's "...Gourmet Burgers".Bandy and Easum continue his analysis of the problems dragging down "traditional" churches as they encounter the new century.Bandy adds a "nuts and bolts" element that was missing in "Burgers".Traditional churches have let spirituality slip while they pursue better ways of doing church work on a corporate model. The authors want us to return the focus of the church to worship and specifically "indigenous worship"... matching worship style to the community-especially the unchurched community. Many churches are surrounded by spiritual searchers who feel alienated by the "old-fashioned" music and liturgies of traditional worship. Some of their suggestions for styles and environments are hard for me to swallow, but they do encourage thoughtful consideration of how our worship styles have become as dated as knickers.I am not sure that the overwhelming sensual assault of much of modern culture is absolutely necessary to relate to the Under-30 crowd, but I can see where it could provide a way to communicate the transformative power of Jesus to the MTV generation. Beyond worship, they advocate building strong, spiritual individuals to replace the ineffective and energy wasting committee structures of the past.Church leaders become coachs, inspiring rather than directing each individual's ministry.Teams of desciples coalescing around natural leaders who share their vision will do the work of Jesus, rather than the work of the church. This is not a book of instructions, but it does point out the elements necessary to make the kind of transformation they feel is required for the survival of the larger church in the post-Christendom, pre-Christian era.Even if you disagree with the methods that Bandy and Easum suggest, this book will stimulate serious thought and conversation with others in your church community about how we do the work of our Lord.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, despite minor problems
Authors Easum and Bandy suggest methods and concepts for the growth of churches of the future using the organic metaphor of the redwood tree. The contemporary language used is user-friendly and potentially mentallystimulating. It reflects the author's in-depth knowledge of the mostrecent cultural changes affecting, to varying degrees, each church.Theapproach is outreach oriented while suggesting that spiritual redwoods arenot born or built but grown.Far and away the best, and longest, chapterof the book is the author's discussion of indigenous worship and the rolesuch worship plays in church growth.I suggest purchasing the book becauseof this chapter. Unfortunately the authors' suggestions and analysisare often simplistic. While they say they value diversity and amultiplicity of options for growing churches, apparently not included ineither are the practices and conceptuality of what they label"declining" (read "traditional") churches. They alsopit spirituality, experience, and communities as the positive polaropposites of that which they label as negative: dogma, understanding, andinstitutions.Do these have to be opposites? Are the latter negative? A wise philosopher once said, "It is more important that a propositionbe interesting than it be true....but truth adds interest."Theinsights which emerge out of this interesting book may allow the reader todiscover truths the authors have either overlooked or dismissed in additionto those that have been plainly presented. ... Book Description
It is 1916. Bartholomew Bandy, fourth-year medical student, decides that it is time to join the War. The prim young Canadian expects that he will have few problems remaining clean and virtuous. But he is aware that his bland, horse-like face drives people crazy, and that he has a certain tendency to be accident-prone. How will the war affect him, and vice versa? The realities of trench war at the front provide a contrasting backdrop for his adventures, as he blunders into contact with all sorts of people, both fictional and historical (the King, Lester Pearson, and Winston Churchill). Three Cheers For Me was first published in 1962, to wide critical acclaim. This expanded version first appeared in 1973, to launch the series now known as The Bandy Papers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hysterical, cynical and thoughtful.
The Bandy papers are a well constructed, well researched and thouroughly enjoyably series of books, which highlight not only the folly of war in general, but the absolute insanity of the first world war. While the books leave you chortling and giggling, they also fill you with a sense of horror that such things could take place in the name of western civilization, and if history is written by the victors, General Haig was damn lucky the allies won, because these books alone prove a case for war crimes of an immense scale. The whole ridiculous nature of upper class British society is lampooned mercilessly, and the motives, morals and values of the allies is questioned and found wanting. I would recommend these books to anyone - they are timeless and should be read over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrorising
Ah! "Bandy Bandyensis"! A nightmare to his superiors, parents and other riff and beloved by his totally bemused compadres - male and female. All while cruising through life with an obliviousnous to his effect upon others that is positively breathtaking. Until that is, he meets his match: a monstrosity of English Plumbing which leaves him a complete wreck after one of the most side-splitting description's of the aformentioned device's operational facilities - or lack thereof - I've ever read that left me in tears of laughter and my ribs aching viciously - quite viciously!. Not to be outdone however, our hero despatches most of his superiors to the padded cell blubbering for mercy or a much needed avenue of escape - generally from Bandy's voice. Something guaranteed to eviscerate anyone's aural facilities at 100 paces with no little difficulty! Then there's "backsliding"......Get the entire Bandy series and plenty of rib-strapping tape. You're going to need it!

I first read this book nearly 25 years ago. I recently re-read it after discovering it in my attic, and found that not only had it lost non of its charm in the intervening years, but in fact had matured into something that I could savour with pleasure over a glass of wine. If Biggles was crossed with Blackadders Baldrick, then this would be the result. A sensitive yet humourous rendering of life in the trenches and in the pioneering days of aerial warfare that isn't too heavy going. This is a classic waiting in the wings. ... Read more

Book Description
Bandy is back! It's 1940, and the intrepid air ace of WWI is eager to join the fight against Germany. Unfortunately, everyone seems to think Bandy is too old to be flying Spitfires, and should go quietly into retirement to polish his medals and knighthoods. Bandy, however, has other ideas, and uses his friends and/or enemies in high places to manoeuvre himself into the Battle of Britain. Between being mistaken for a Nazi spy, a communist, or a Chelsea pensioner, Bandy has as much trouble on the ground as he has in the air with the Luftwaffe, and when his son arrives on the scene, his troubles only get worse. This edition also includes Donald Jack's novelette "Where Did Rafe Madison Go?" Jack wrote the story just as the fate of the Avro Arrow jet fighter was still up in the air (the first test flight taking place in March '58, and the programme's termination coming only four months after the story was published). In "Where Did Rafe Madison Go?" Jack imagines a future delta-winged descendant of the Arrow, the CF-108, and takes us through the RCAF court martial that is trying to uncover the explanation for the plane's mysterious disappearance, an incident that even the pilot, Rafe Madison, doesn't understand. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Historical, yes, but truly hysterical...
Donald Jack has created a rare thing, indeed, with this series of books that show the true human condition - that humor (and alcohol, apparently) is what makes the most horrible situations bearable. With the grimmest backdrop of the original WWI set of books - no mean feat, given that the series begins in the trenches - Jack keeps you in hysterics regardless, touching on semi-suicidal parachutes, dabbling with the wives of staff officers, baroque dentistry, pigeons, and other seemingly ludicrous subjects with grace, aplomb, and almost ritual silliness. When you throw historical accuracy in the mix as a bonus, well, it's a practically irresistible package. Poignant, incisive and wonderfully belly-laugh inducing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best in the Series
My fav in the series of excellent historical fiction (the history is quite accurate, but it isn't the focus), it is full of ups and downs emotionally as well as aeronautically. The Bandy papers are very high on my list of great books since I came across them in my HS library in Carleton Place, Ontario (which could double for Beamington).Sad that so few Canadians are aware of these books.Guess it doens't fit with current trends.

If you are into undiscovered gems, check this series out.At least the first 6 books.Vol 7 was ok, 8 (Hitler vr. Me) was disappointing.Have not read the 9th yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I ever read.
I've read the entire Bandy series, and though they are all great, this is the best.

A fabulous ride from the first sentence, you will laugh out loud and excuse yourself from any shared reading room often. The characters are wonderfully written and I swear that no-one does drunken dialogue better than Donald Jack.I'm guessing he has some experience with drunkeness. In an observational role, of course.

Though an even more enjoyable read if you have an interest in vintage aviation or history, this books stands just fine on its own as a terrific work of humourous fiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars A bittersweet ending to the original trilogy
Not to give anything away, but a wonderful meld of the usual comedic grace with a poignant touch of tragedy. You'll be laughing and crying and enjoying throughout.

I'm fortunate enough to have the entire series. It's a pity most are out of print now. This series would make an excellent BBC- style television series. ... Read more

Is your congregation concerned primarily with health and stability, or mission and outreach? Does it always or usually seek a pleasant sense of harmony and fellowship, or does it vibrate with an edgy energy? Are the members risk averse, or risk takers? In this innovative book Tom Bandy explains how harmony-the desire to minimize conflict and change-can deaden our discernment of the leadership of the Spirit, and render us blind to the needs of the world into which Jesus would lead. With the visionary sweep that has become his trademark, Bandy explains how congregations can leave behind their preoccupation with a false harmony, and follow Jesus into the mission field of contemporary North American culture. ... Book Description
It’s 1920 and Ottawa’s own Bartholomew Bandy is back from the War To End All Wars. Now he’s off to New York to turn his experience as a flying ace into commercial success. While starting an airline with one giant Vickers Vimy bomber, our hero falls in love with Cissie Chaffington, the beanpole daughter of the tycoon Cyrus Q. Chaffington, last seen hectoring Prime Minister Meighen in Ottawa. To add to the perils of stunt flying over and under the Brooklyn Bridge, Bandy’s life is complicated by the arrival of Dasha, escaped from Russia and eager to make a splash with his dollars.

As always our man Bandy hobnobs with the great and famous (holding his own at the Algonquin Round Table, not to mention conversing with W.C. Fields) and even comes close to being a silent movie star. But other careers lie in store for the irrepressible lad from the Ottawa Valley, who continues to disappoint his parents by refusing to go back to medical school and settle down with a nice girl. Whether that will be Cissie – who shares in some of the funniest sex scenes ever recorded – remains to be seen. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I waited 15 years for this?
I have been a huge Bart Bandy fan for over 25 years, so much so that neither my bedside table nor my bathroom book rack has been without one of the first three books in the series in longer than I can remember.

I bought this book used through Amazon and was eagerly awaiting the chance to finally add to my collection, but this has to be one of my greatest literary letdowns ever.

The humor had lost all its spontaneity, and the continual references to past books were strained and neither had nor provided context. The joy of the first three books was the way in which comic hilarity mixed so well with genuinely sensitive character development - I almost cried when Katherine (Kattering?) died in "It's Me Again".In this 4th book, it's all gone.

I highly recommend all three of this book's predecessors, and for anyone interested in a study in contrast, buy this book and reflect on the time invested by Mr. Jack in introducing Katherine Lewis and her quirky ways. Then compare that to the rapid-fire was in which he gets Cissie in the sack for reasons that I have yet to understand.

This book has the feel of a work produced because the author was under contract to do so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Funny
I see no one has reviewed this, so how can I pass up an opportunity to plug this book?!Let me tell you that, if you like Douglas Adam or Pat McManus, you will love Donald Jack and his hilarious main character, a Canadian WWI ace named Bartholemew Bandy. This is the fourth book in a series of eight, and the author manages to make each one better than the last.On top being tremendously funny, the story is beautifully written as historical fiction, the characters are well-developed and the times are captured just perfectly.Read it and weep (you will laugh 'til you cry!). ...
