5-0 out of 5 stars The most challenging sport of all
Classical Olympic biathlon is cross-country (X-C) sking combined with target shooting. X-C skiers are the world's most physically-fit athletes--but X-C by itself is so highly aerobic, it is closed to all but the most gifted participants. Enter biathlon:

Instead of rewarding only brute physical output, biathlon requires the athlete to switch from a huge physical effort to the the delicate precision of .22-cal target shooting. All in the 15 seconds it takes to ski up to the target range, whip the rifle carried on his back around to the firing position, and shoot five shoots at a baseball-sized target 100 meters away.

Elite biathletes find their pulse drops from 175 bpm to 155 in those few seconds; then they shoot inbetween heartbeats.

The trick is to NOT ski at 100% effort, because that will make accurate shooting impossible. But do you ski at 99%, or 98%? That is the equation each biathlete must solve for himself. Watching a meet at which a super-star skier who has the the fastest time loses to a slower skier who is shooting better provides thrilling monents in the sporting scene.

This work describes how to modify the Olympic version for suburban practicality. We uses low-powered air rifles to permit the sport to be carried out nearly anywhere. In the absence of snow, my young charges run instead of ski. The competition is so intense, and so attractive to high school kids, that when I started a biathlon squad in Concord, Ma, within 2 weeks, all the top X-C high school runners and skiers joined up. One of these guys--who had never shot a rifle before, qualified for the Olympic trials! ... Read more
