Parm...http://booksllc.net/?l=fr ... Read more

Read more

Excerpt: The Olympic Sliding Centre Innsburck is a venue for bobsleigh, luge and skeleton located in Igls, Austria (southeast of Innsbruck). The most recent version of the track was completed in 1975 and is the first permanent, combination artificially refrigerated bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton track, serving as a model for other tracks of its kind worldwide. It will host the bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton competitions for the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics. In 1935, Igls hosted the two-man event of the world bobsleigh championships when the track ran from Römerstrasses to the Patscherkofel valley railroad station. Several fatal accidents at the finishing curve occurred during competition, causing temporarily closure of the track until safety measures were introduced. In 1960, Innsbruck was awarded the 1964 Winter Olympics which led to the construction of separate bobsleigh and luge tracks for the games. Track construction began in September 1961 and was officially completed in July 1963 following test runs of both tracks, including twenty injuries during the 1963 FIBT World Championships on the bobsleigh track. When Denver, Colorado in the United States withdrew in 1972 after being awarded the 1976 Winter Olympics two years earlier for financial reasons, the International Olympic Committee offered the games to 1976 runner-up Whistler, British Columbia in Canada (northeast of Vancouver), but Whistler declined in the wake of the provincial elections in 1972. As a result, the IOC gave the games to Innsbruck. The track was constructed from September 1988 to December 1990 designed for use in bobsleigh and luge competitions with the drivers in mind. Ice team staff was recruited in August 1990 while the first ice test was performed in January 1991. The first bobsleigh test event was in February 1991 while the first luge test event was in March 1991. The track hosted the skeleton event of the FIBT World Championships in 1993. Since the 1992 Winter Olympics, the track has been host to programs on bobsleigh rides performed by 1998 Winter Olympic medalist Bruno Mingeon. Construction on a new, combined track was started in 1973 under the auspices of the International Bobsleigh and T...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=15214386 ... Read more

Excerpt: The 1928 Winter Olympics, referred to by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the Games of the II Olympiad, were held in St. Moritz, Switzerland, from February 11 through February 18, 1928. A total of 464 athletes from 25 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated in these Games. Overall, 14 events were contested in 8 disciplines. Athletes competed in skeleton for the first time, but unlike the previous Olympic Games there was no curling competition and military patrol was a demonstration event rather than a medal event. Both men and women competed in these Games, although the only events women were allowed to compete in were ladies singles and pairs figure skating. Eighty-three individual athletes won medals. Athletes from Norway far surpassed their competitors in the medal count, winning 15 medals to the 6 won by the nearest nation, the United States. The only three other nations that had athletes win medals in more than one event were Sweden, Finland, and Austria. Athletes from 12 of the 25 participating NOCs won at least one medal; athletes from 6 won at least one gold medal. Sonja Henie of Norway won the gold medal in the women's individual figure skating competition, the first of three consecutive Olympics where she would do so. She was only fifteen during the 1928 Games...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=24636615 ... Read more

Excerpt: The Lake Placid bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton track is a venue for bobsleigh, luge and skeleton located in Lake Placid, New York. This venue was used for the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics and for the only winter Goodwill Games in 2000. The third and most recent version of the track was completed in 2000 with the track hosting both the first FIBT World Championships and FIL World Luge Championships done outside of Europe, doing so in 1949 and 1983. In 2010 the bobsled track was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The bobsled track was built in 1930. According to the National Park Service: Carved out of wilderness and surrounded by forested land on all sides, the one and one-half mile long Olympic Bobsled Run was constructed in 1930 and built specifically for the 1932 Winter Olympic Games. The course was designed by Stanislaus Sentzytsky, a renowned German course designer, who designed a course that was radically different from its European counterparts. The Lake Placid course was longer, steeper, and featured a more pronounced drop in curves than European runs, which allowed for steadier driving and faster speeds than those obtained on prior bobsled events. After the American team won two gold medals and one silver in 1932, bobsledding, previously unknown in America, captivated the countrys interest, and U.S. teams dominated the sport until 1956. Although portions of the course have been retired, parts of the original Olympic Bobsled Run continue to be used for training and recreation. As Mt. Van Hoevenberg Olympic Bobsled Run, the structure was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on February 4, 2010. The listing was a...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=15278158 ... Excerpt: The Slam Dunk Contest is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) competition held during the NBA All-Star Weekend. The contest was inaugurated by the American Basketball Association (ABA) at its All-Star Game in 1976 in Denver, the same year the slam dunk was legalized in the NCAA. As a result of the the ABA-NBA merger later that year there would not be another slam dunk contest at the professional level until 1984. The contest currently uses fan voting, via text-messaging, to determine the winner of the final round. The current sponsor of the event is Sprite, an American soft-drink. The very first slam dunk contest was won by Julius Erving at the 1976 ABA All-Star Game. The current champion of the NBA Dunk Contest is Nate Robinson,(formerly of the NY Knicks, now with the Boston Celtics), who is the only person to have won the event three times.
