Excerpt: Pengrowth Saddledome -Calgary had been served for 30 years by the Stampede Corral when the Calgary Flames arrived in 1980. With a total capacity of 8,700, the Corral was the largest arena in Canada west of Toronto in 1950, but had fallen below major league standards by the 1970s. The Corral was deemed insufficient for the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1977, leading the World Hockey Association's Calgary Cowboys to fold rather than hope to be a team selected to merge with the NHL. Calgary's bid to host the 1988 Winter Olympics, coupled with the arrival of the Flames, drove the need to build a new arena. City Council debated the merits of several locations for the city's new Olympic Coliseum, and narrowed their choices down to two areas in the Victoria Park neighbourhood on the east end of downtown. Two other sites, one on the west end of downtown, and a late bid by several businessmen pushing to build the arena in the northern suburb of Airdrie were also considered. The Saddledome's location within Stampede Park, as seen from the Calgary Tower. The Victoria Park Community Association fought the bid to build the arena in their neighborhood, threatening to oppose the city's Olympic bid if necessary. City Council voted on March 3, 1981 to build the proposed 20,000 seat arena on the Stampede grounds, immediately east of the Corral and south of Victoria Park. The community continued to fight the city over rezoning the land to allow for the new arena amidst fears of traffic congestion ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=700852 ... Read more

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Spielvereinigung Unterhaching is a German sports club in Unterhaching, a semi-rural municipality on the southern outskirts of the Bavarian capital Munich. The club's football team is widely known for playing in the first-division Bundesliga alongside its more famous cousins Bayern Munich and 1860 Munich for two seasons between 1999 and 2001, while the bobsleigh department has captured several world and Olympic titles. The team currently play in the 3. Liga, the German third division, having been relegated from the 2. Bundesliga in season 2006-07 and then moved into the newly created 3. Liga for 2008-09 following a reorganisation of the German league system. Originally part of the gymnastics and sports club TSV Hachinger, SpVgg Unterhaching was established as an independent football club on 1 January 1925. Their first promotion to a higher division came in 1931 and they went on to be promoted to the A-Klasse a year later. However, the club was dissolved in 1933 as it was regarded as "politically unreliable" by the Nazis and was not re-established until after the end of World War II in 1945 to resume play in the amateur fourth division B-Klasse. Unterhaching's football team was only an anonymous local amateur team with no significant successes until a climb through league ranks that began in 1976 with promotion from B-Klasse to A-Klasse play. A first place finished earned the club quick promotion to the Bezirksliga in 1977. Continued good play put the team into the fourth-division Landesliga Bayern-Süd in 1979 and then the Oberliga Bayern (III), the highest amateur division at the time, by 1981. Product Description
Applying the vivid metaphor of "Fire on Ice", authorNelson "Chris" Stokes begins his account of the Jamaica BobsleighTeam, citing its spectacular crash at the 1988 Calgary Olympics to itstriumphs across world competition. Once a novelty portrayed in themotion picture Cool Runnings, the team has become a phenomenon, quiteunlike any other sporting enterprise, prompting journalists and sportshistorians to rave about its indomitable spirit, its uncanny survival, its crowd-pleasing collective personae.

All this is recorded in Cool Runnings and Beyond: The Story of theJamaica Bobsleigh Team where team member Stokes describes how, oncekindled, this little flame called Jamaica Bobsleigh refused tosputter, but flared like its Olympic counterpart. First dismissed as agimmick when it burst on the scene at the Calgary Games, JamaicaBobsleigh began to truly compete, and the world began taking measure.

These islanders from the tropics proved they could race on ice and if given enough practice, funds, and support, they might become medal contenders.

Now president of the Jamaica Bobsleigh Federation, Chris Stokes provides two narratives from his experience as an Olympian and a member of the world bobsleighing community. One details the personalities, those grinding training regimens, and the raw hopes and fears, disasters and determination found behind the familiar media images. Drawing from his experience within the fluid and dynamic demands of marketing Jamaica Bobsleigh, Chris also provides lessons for fundraising, building a vibrant and visionary business, and for those who would seek personal growth in context of teamwork. ... High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Skeleton or tobogganing is a fast winter sliding sport in which an individual person rides a small sled down a frozen track while lying face down, during which athletes experience forces up to 5Gs. It originated in St. Moritz, Switzerland as a spin-off from the popular British sport of Cresta Sledding. While skeleton "sliders" use similar equipment to that of cresta "riders", the two sports are different: while skeleton is run on the same track used by bobsleighs and luge, cresta is run on cresta-specific sledding tracks only. Also, the skeleton sled has no steering or braking mechanism, while cresta sledders use skates on their feet to help steer and brake the sled. ... Read more
