4-0 out of 5 stars Great info + Bodybuilding Authority
"Extreme Muscle Enhancement" is an excellent book filled with sound advice. The author is an established authority in the bodybuilding industry, plus he is also of the medical profession. So the information is coming from a more reliable source.

The book recommends some great exercises, techniques, and nutritional concepts, but it does not outline an entire workout program.

My only issue was that he did not mention dead lifts for the recommended back exercises. It's the king of back movements!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great workout info but a tad hypocritical
This book is a must read for those wanting to get big. The workout and diet info is second to none. The author is a bit technical so if you are dumb you should start out with something simpler. Great analytical information on body types and how to design the most effecting program around your own type.
The author pushes for the natural body builder (which I highly applaud), and puts down steriod users, but he then praises pro-body builders who are juiced to the gills. Also his section on steriods is filled with false information. This would be a five star book if all the information was accurate.

5-0 out of 5 stars ** MAKE SURE YOU GET THE 2nd EDITION!!!**
dont make the same mistake i did!! this is the first edition - do NOT buy this one --> get the 2nd edition!!! its the same price but has alot of new material!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for all seruious trainers
If you are serious about bodybuilding and don't use steroids you need to read this book.It has all you need to know about getting results in the shortest time period. Excellent information about nutrition and supplements.I prefer the training advise of Body Sculpting for Men which incorporates supersets and periodization training techniques.I have plenty of muscle mass from 20+ years of lifting so the body sculpting techniques are more what I am looking for at this time.Would recommend to new trainees the routines that Dr Colker has in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Pump
I really liked this book. Its got hardcore insider info on how to build lean mass. It focuses a great deal on what a Catablic vs Anabolic State is and why and how you should avoid catabolic and stay anabolic. Sometimes it goes too in depth but that is good and you can take it or leave it.I would have liked to see more illustrations though. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My Guns are Bigger than Yours!
Dude! You've got to get this book man! It's awesome.I've been working out for years you know.Sometimes I'll just get crazy and max-out on days I'm not supposed to.Just get off the chain man!Watched what I ate and took all the supplements.Had a friend who'd inject me with vitamins before every workout you know.Yeah!Just do it! Was getting totally shredded you know. Then I thought if I needed to get to the next level this book would help me, at least it could help me with my legs, which look like garbage by the way.Bro, this book is awesome!!I thought it would just be another book that had me lifting like a maniac! It's not dude, it's all new and stuff with different ways to build up your pythons and get massive. At first some of the techniques seemed a little weird you know.Like one exercise called "Dog Dance".That's when you get an average or big dog and grab his front paws and dance around with him for like 30 minutes man, non-stop!Bro, that's a total gasser. There's a lot of stuff like that, the "Purple Squats", "Quad Snapper", "Medicine Ball Licks", all designed to get you shredded man! There's nutrition advice as well.I'm telling you dude, knock back some cardboard-soup and steamed wieners, do 50 reps of "carpet lunges" and "glute tremblers" and you'll be in the cage man!Man, I'm like a freakin machine!I can't wait to show my grandma my pipes man! She's gonna freak!! ... Design bodybuilding programs to maximize your muscle growth. This book not only provides you with an effective bodybuilding program, but it teaches you how to train for size, symmetry and strength so that you can create your own bodybuilding programs. You will learn techniques to maximize your body's natural anabolic hormones: growth hormone, insulin and, of course, testosterone. You will also understand each muscle group's "personality" and how to tailor your training to develop any lagging muscle group. This book is packed with specialization routines for the chest, back, deltoids, arms, quads, hamstrings and calves. SPV2 is a very dense read, and you will shortcut your learning curve by light years in the gym.Make no mistake. This program is tough physically and mentally and is meant solely for the intermediate to advanced bodybuilder looking to build a lot of muscle in all the right places. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best
a great overall bodybuilding/strength/power/fitness book.author has taken training protocols from the most proven and respected trainers/authors/research and compiled into a single intelligent, realistic and effective program.

not pure bodybuilding (see charles poliquin, HST), not pure strength (see HIT), not pure power (see robert dos remedios) but a mix of the three, which is best for overall improvement... assuming you don't have the more specific goals of a competitive bodybuilder, strength lifter, or college/pro athlete.

5-0 out of 5 stars another solid program
Another solid, no nonsense, to the point workout/sculpting/muscle building guide by James Chan.I bought some of his other strength and physique series and they were really compact and useful in the gym.James breaks down his earlier works with body building vs the new modern lean look that a lot of people seem to be going for.Whatever your objectives are, whether it is to body build and become Arnold Schwartzenegger (pre Governor days) or Brad Pitt in Fight Club, check out James's work and get cut real fast.. .Anyways, James has youtube videos too at [...].Check out his kettlebell vids...

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
This book was easy to read and straight to the point. The first 2/3 of it is the main workout and the last 1/3 is past articles.Everything is put forth in a manner that you can understand. It has many different workouts so you can change it up if you need to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good investment, but very advanced.
Another great book by this guy!Whereas his first book is a compilation of his magazine articles and training techniques, this second book presents more of a coherent and complete training system. The book tells you how different ways of training actually produce different hormonal responses. So the training program outlined in this book cycles through these different workouts to give you as much muscle growth as possible.

Plus the author gives you some specialization routines for each muscle group, as well as extra training articles, some of which I've never read before.

great book for a bodybuilder who knows his stuff, but this book would be a hard read for the beginning bodybuilder. ... Read more

Product Description
Ever since the fitness craze in the 1980’s, we have become a nation increasingly aware of our health and physique. Millions of dollars are spent every year in the quest for a perfect body. Gyms are big business, personal trainers are making a tidy living helping people stay fit, and body building supplements are at an all-time level of performance.
In actuality, the sport of body building has been around for quite some time. In the late 19th century, the man known as the “father of bodybuilding”, Eugen Sandow was credited with inventing the sport by inviting people to view his body in muscle display performances.
Sandow built a stage performance around displays of strength and agility as well as showing off a “Grecian” physique which was considered the ultimate body. He became so successful, he created several businesses around his fame and was among the first people to market body building products bearing his name. As he became more popular, he was credited with the invention of the first exercise equipment marketed to the masses.
Sandow was also credited with beginning the first body building contest called “The Great Competition” held in London. This competition was the basis for many others to follow including the Mr. Olympia competition that remains the most popular body building contest to date.
When World War II broke out, men in the country were inspired to become bigger in their physique, stronger, and more aggressive in their behavior. Training techniques were improved, nutrition was focused on more than ever, and body building equipment evolved into effective means for working muscles in ways never thought of before.
It was also around this time that many body building organizations came into being including the Amateur Athletic Union and the International Federation of Body Building. In 1970, body building was taken to a new level when the film “Pumping Iron” was released starring Austrian newcomer Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Through the years, body building has just grown in popularity becoming almost an obsession for many people. Women have started
to take an interest in honing their bodies, and the sport has evolved into a real competitive arena.
If you’ve always wanted to learn about how to build your body to that “Grecian Ideal” envisioned by Eugen Sandow, there can be a lot to learn. This book will guide you through some of the basics to get you started. Of course, nothing will compare to actually getting to the gym and lifting those weights, but you’ll need some information first.
That’s why we’re here. We want to reveal body building secrets to YOU.

A Blueprint To Building A Body You Can Be Proud Of

INTRODUCTION TO BODY BUILDING

This book is an exploration. We will explore the fascinating history of body building, which can be traced as far back as the 11th Century, up to the 19th Century when it arrived on the North American scene.
We will explore how to build your body and muscles, body building and weight lifting equipment, the "right" and the "dark" side of dietary supplements as well as the importance of proper nutrition for the serious body builder.
No discussion of body and muscle building would be complete without covering consumer health fraud. Bogus claims and promises of unrealistic results have been around for decades. The explosion of marketing on the internet has, unfortunately, created an exponential increase in unsavory providers ready and willing to bilk unsuspecting consumers.

Muscle Mania will explore package labeling and what you should know about before you buy. The content we cover presents a broad outline rather than substantive personal recommendations. Nothing within should be construed as anything more than educational and
should never replace medical advice from a professional physician.
We will take a look at the different types of exercise equipment that is available to bodybuilders and what considerations you need to keep in mind when shopping for your own equipment or using the services of a gym.
What could be more important than your diet and nutrition? It's critical to your success when bodybuilding. We'll give you several recipes that are not only prepared specifically for bodybuilders, but that provide you with a breakdown of calories, grams of protein, grams of carbohydrates, grams of fat and the carb-protein-fat percentage ratio. You will be amazed at just how tasty and nutritious a bodybuilding diet can be.

Our story begins in your living room. You've just arrived home after another grueling day on the job, competing with your co-workers and battling the behemoths on the freeway.

All you want is something cool to drink and a little R & R in front of the boob tube.

You grab your favorite beverage, flop down into your LazyBoy, flip on the remote and. . .THERE IT IS. . .right in front of your face. Another body that looks like it was carved from a solid piece of granite.

Options abound for the beginning bodybuilder and they can all appear quite daunting when you are just getting started. In fact, it's easy to become extremely confused and discover more questions than answers. Questions like:
How do I build muscle?
How do I strengthen muscle?
Am I healthy enough to begin a muscle building routine?
What should I eat?
How often should I eat?
Should I eat at different intervals throughout the day?
Is there a specific diet for building muscle?
How many calories should I eat?
Should I take supplements?
Should I join a gym?
Can I create my own gym at home?
How can I avoid being ripped off?

1-0 out of 5 stars A Silly, Silly Little Book
It's a tiny book with huge margins and a tremendous amount of white space.Basically, a chronicle of the author's route to competition; it's fair to say that if he followed his own advice, he had to have finished dead-last.

The first part of the book offers a vague overview of the bodybuilding competition process, such a pre-judging, compulsatory posing, etc. There are a number of poor quality pictures of the author in various poses.

The second part of the book offers a disjointed array concepts leading up to the actual competition.More grainy pictures of the author at various stages of cutting are shown.

Overall, this book is devoid of any real insight into the real world of bodybuilding contests. If you're looking for "silly little helpful hints" on tanning creams, posing shorts or hair removal, then this might be the book for you. But, if you're really interested in such things as intense cutting diets or pre-contest drug use (such as diuretics) then take your business elsewhere.

In other words, take your business elsewhere.I can't think of a single good reason that any serious bodybuilder should buy this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced for such vague information!
I have been doing bodybuilding for 4 years, and I have been a licensed personal trainer for over a year now.I have a fairly decent amount of knowledge about bodybuilding, but I just recently decided I wanted to do a competition.I bought this book hoping for some information I could really use to compete in my first competition.First of all, I found myself having a hard time reading this book because all I could focus on were how horrible the grammer and punctuation mistakes were.I'm not a English major in college, and I still noticed all of the errors.Run on sentences, fragments, and left out commas make a book hard to understand. Also, the information in the book is just too vague.I have learned much more detailed information from guys at the gym that have competed.Lastly, you can visit Lee Hayward's website and get almost all of the information in the book for free. That's what I would suggest to anyone thinking of purchasing this book.I'm not saying the book is garbage. It has some good stuff in it if you are just absolutely in left field when it comes to bodybuilding.I hope this review helps you out if you are considering this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tips
Awesome and concise! This is a great and easy to follow guide for the first time BB competitor. It helped me a lot! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars True to the title
Real bodybuilding indeed. This is a fantastic and refreshingly honest book on bodybuilding. Ron Harris pulls no punches and tells the truth about the extremes involved in the sport/art of bodybuilding. He has personal experience with both natural and drug assisted bodybuilding (as I do). While he is honest about the advantages of using muscle building drugs he does warn the reader not to become delusional thinking a few cycles of steroids and growth hormone will make them the next Mr Olympia.

The training and nutritional advice is excellent. I personally prefer more carbs and less protein in my diet regardless of whether or not I am increasing muscle size or attempting to lean out. He offers sane advice on natural sports supplements though of course not everybody will be as keen to take fat burners such as he prefers. I avoid them. He does offer great training advice for natural bodybuilders. I am 39 years old and have made great gains naturally training 3 times a week using only 5-6 working sets per bodypart over the last 4 years after not training for 10 years.

I love the way the author tackles the psychology of bodybuilding. Lifting weights, doing regular cardiovascular exercise and eating clean are fantastic for your health, but hardcore competitive bodybuilding is purely concerned about aesthetics. I once was into this lifestyle and cycled steroids for 3.5 years myself and have now been drug free 15+ years and feel great. I no longer want to just look healthy but actually be so. I love training naturally. You do need drugs to be Mr Olympia, but you do not need drugs to get stronger and bigger than the average guy. If you are thinking about steroids or hardcore bodybuilding you should carefully read this book and count the cost before diving into it. My own experience with steroids (and I took much lower doses than those discussed in the book) proved that steroids are in fact as addictive as many other drugs.

I am in the 5% minority of bodybuilders (a recreational one) that was big when he started and has an athletic background. I remember my first 6 week cycle of steroids saw me go from 200 to 220 pounds (I'm 5 "10"). My maximum bench press increased 80 pounds in 6 weeks. I was instantly hooked. The author is very honest about his experiences in the book as well. Regardless of your view on steroids, if you are interested in bodybuilding on any level you will absolutely love this book. I highly recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Would have been 4 stars if it was edited better
This book has a boatload of knowledge and personal experiance in it that make it a well worth while read. Nobody should doubt Ron Harris's background in terms of training or competing. But, the chapters were not very well edited, specifically the training chapter. It felt like two seperate chapters were written and then molded togther into one which seemed to create redundancy. Perhaps, if Harris is picked up by a major publisher this will not be a problem for the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Truth" in Bodybuilding?
"Real Bodybuilding" is a well written book by an author who has the experience to know what he is talking about.Mr. Harris does not pull any punches when it gets right down to the TRUTH and nitty gritty of competitive bodybuilding in its current state, i.e, the abuse of performance enhancing drugs, a complete disregard for physical, emotional and mental health and an ego-maniacal world filled with lies and deception promulgated by almost everyone involved in the "sport".

Basically the bottom line:A person can not be a competitive bodybuilder without the use of performance enhancing drugs - and not just a few, but rather a walking pharmacopia requiring a budget of many tens of thousands of dollars per year.

Personally I have no interest in competitive bodybuilding but I am intrigued by the lengths these misguided people will go to in order to win. This interest was especially peaked and confirmed when I read about the convicted murderer bodybuilding couple Craig Titus and his wife.I find it fascinating the depths these people will sink to in order to live "The Lifestyle".That pretty much sums up the world of competitive bodybuilding for me.

Mr. Harris confirmed my own beliefs that this form of entertainment is a perverted, extreme and self-destructive world that I really would want no part of, no matter how much (fleeting) glory or money involved:Beach muscles, "the pump", posing trunks (yechh!), tanning, lotion, oils, ingesting worthless supplements and other garbage on a daily basis, sticking needles in your veins and directly into muscles, suppositories, acne, bitch tits, "cycling", shrinking balls/enlarged clitoris, shaving, implants, fixed contests, gay perversion back stage...sounds wonderful doesn't it?

This book is a good read for the curious about what it takes to be a competitive bodybuilder and I applaud Mr. Harris for attempting to reveal some "Truth" about a subject that is rife with deception. ... Read more
