Product Description
Most bowlers in the 150-190 average range have developed strong basic skills but are hampered by one or two fundamental flaws that keep them from improving their game. Two-time PBA National Champion Mike Aulby and four-time tournament winner Dave Ferraro reveal their insider tips for analyzing and correcting common mistakes that prevent intermediate bowlers from rolling that coveted 200+ game:

  • Converting the toughest spares and "unmakable splits"
  • Increasing your strike-shot carry
  • Making equipment work for you
  • Overcoming the mental pressure of league play to bowl your best
Complete with photographs, illustrations, and a handy bowling ball comparison chart, Bowling 200+ will keep you consistent, game after game.Mike Aulby, the only man to be named both Rookie of the Year (1979) and Player of the Year (1985), is one of the top ten professional bowlers in terms of lifetime earnings.Dave Ferraro is considered the fastest-rising star on the PBA tour. He is one of only ten players in PBA history to win more than $150,000 in a single year.Dan Herbst is the author of several sports books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars bowl more 200 games
This is a very good book that helped me increase my scores. It covers the basic fundamentals of your approach to more advanced techniques of wrist position for increasing or decreasing a hook. I would highly recommend this book to any bowler.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Book
As a very keen bowler, i really really enjoyed this book, it has given me practical advice and has taught me a few things i did not know. Im still reading it:)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview
The objective of this book is to give the above average bowler (150 - 190 avg) general tips on how to improve their game. This isn't a book that's going to try to tell you where you should stand to make every shot. If you're average is in that range you already know the basics and probably have a pretty good idea on how to bowl - you're just making little mistakes and the objective of this book is to give examples of the most common mistakes good bowlers make and what you should try to do to rectify the situation.

The authors do a very good job at achieving that goal. The other major pluses are that one of the authors is a lefty - so southpaws aren't ignored. In addition the authors do a good job at presenting opposing arguments when a particular tip is subjective to certain play styles (they explain that bowling is a game of consistency and that you shouldn't necessarily get hung up at doing some things the "right way" if the opposite is working well for you.

They do however draw a line in the sand on a few fundamentals and explain well why you shouldn't deviate if you're serious about becoming a better bowler.

After reading this I find myself to be a much more thoughtful bowler and a couple of the tips are really helping my play (In particular the very simple but effective tip that when you're uncertain about the lane conditions you're better off ditching the hook and throwing hard and straight when trying to pick up that tricky spare.)

Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars On the spot
I have only read the first two chapters but already I have found 5 things that I know I am doing wrong. I couldnt understand why it was happening, but now I know.

Cant wait to read the rest and see how I go on my next league night.

It might be from 1989 and it might still talk about urethane balls, but the basics are still the same.

Additional (Edited 7/3/2008)
I wish i had finished the book earlier. On my first night i tried to change too much at once and it wasnt till the 4th game when i just changed one thing and things came good.

The following week after finishing the book and reading that it says not to try to change everything at once, i added one new change to the existing change from the previous week and creamed my opposition.

Am back to my best, Great book!

4-0 out of 5 stars good info
this is good... I was hoping for something i had not read yet and it didn't have anything that fit this... but everything in it is good information for someone with MS.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title- it's a pharmaphilic decoy
I was very disappointed. This book is basically an attack on alternative therapies through the lens of self serving conventional medicine politics rather than attempting to find any merit and mechanism of different alternative modalities. For instance the coverage of vitamins and supplements were ridiculously weak and even out of date with modern research recommendations from conventional medical schools e.g. the sunshine vitamin D link to MS in particular and the much higher emerging vitamin D RDAs in general. The vitamin coverage completely failed to examine the true supplement alternatives like the inexpensive, riveting megadose protocols and clinical results of Duke educated Dr Fred R Klenner and, independently, Canadian Dr. H.T.R. Mount. Likewise I found the discussion of enzymes, nutrition, and digestion lame. These are time critical propositions for the consideration of those deteriorating with a conventional sentence of central neuritis and other neuropathies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
As a person living with MS there were some things in this book that even I didn't know. Its good to have all the correct information from a medical professional. I carry this book with me all the time and refer to it whenever someone tells me, I should do this or that for my MS. We need lots more books like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alternative Medicine and Multiple Sclerosis by Bowling

and the nervous system. There is a hereditary disposition to

spinal cord. The disease may relapse and remit during various

relapses in both length and severity. Alternative medicinal
protocols may be employedi.e. acupuncture, exercise,
biofeedback, chiropractic and massage therapy. Acupuncture has minor risks in the thoracic region for the lung and heart.
Propolis has been found to stimulate and suppress immune function.

A new area called Psychoneuroimmunology has developed which
impacts both the nervous system and the immune system.
Chelation therapy removes plaque from the blood vessels.
Chiropractic has been known to help MS sufferers because low
back pain is reduced with gentle manipulation.

Dental amalgum implications may be present in arthritis, lupus,

MS sufferers. Gamma Linoleic Acid supresses excess immune
system activity. Enzyme therapy improves both digestion and
the breakdown of complex food groups. i.e. protein

This book is an excellent supplementary reference for MS
sufferers. It will complement any formal program of
pharmaceutical medicines in place.

After reading some of the reviews I hestitated on buying this.I had just been diagnosed with MS.I started taking the shots (and still am) but wanted to find other things that I could do.From the reviews I thought this would be an alternative medicine bashing book but its not.It states the facts as they are and shows pros and cons, leave a lot for the reader to consider.I found this to be a well-rounded book that had good info. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Kudos to Kouros
I've had several copies of Tom's book including the original `Par Bowling'. They never seem to find there way back to me. While there are various reasons why this is so, the foremost reason is the value of the content. Carmen Salvino a true legend of the game is reputed to have called Kouros after the release of the initial book asking him how he could publish all of this knowledge for $3.95 (original price). Actually, the term Tom used in the interview was that Carmen was livid (source: Phantom radio show). Personally, I've read, watched, listened, attended seminars, gotten certified as a coach, most of what I've learned and know has it's genesis in Tom's book. Yes, it's encyclopedic in nature, he explains the how's, why's when's, discusses exceptions etc. While it's true that the game has changed due to an evolving environment and equipment revolution, Tom's book remains a primary repository of bowling knowledge. Tom has been cited by other top coaches as being among if not the best.
Truly if bowling had a Mount Rushmore Equivalent, Tom's image would be there.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Scenic Technical Manual
Mr Kouros' tome combines a scenic tour of the game and a technical manual on how to play it. His chapter on the various releases alone is worth the cover price. Other insightful items include a behind-the-scenes peek at PBA Tour conditions and a thoughtful piece on the mysteries of the "mid-roll", probably the Holy Grail of all serious bowlers. Heavy stuff to wade through - then again it's never easy to haul pure gold out of them mines. I've read through the book a couple of times now and there is always something new to catch my attention. This book is the next best thing to a full-time coach. If you love the game, you should get a copy to keep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Bowling Book Available
I've read virtually every bowling book available (and quite a few that are out of print) and this is by far the best.

It is incredibly detailed, advanced bowlers will love it, new bowlers may be a bit overwhelmed at first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Par Bowling: One of the best books on bowling
Par Bowling is one of the great books on bowling. Kuros goes through all the intracies in the game. Well worth reading and studying. It has helped my game tremendously. The book does need to be updated to more modern conditions and it would be wonderful if Kuros could expand more on the ideas and even use more elaborate graphics. To some, the book may seem too detailed, but that is its strength. Kuros does a masterful job of breaking down the elements of good bowling and develing into them. He also is wide open to what's good bowling and what is not and also where one can be flexible.I especially enjoyed is talk abot "mid-roll" - a real secret to putting good action on ball.

5-0 out of 5 stars Par Bowling
An excellent book. It's not an easy read by any means but for any bowler looking to improve their average, this book is a can't miss! Kouros breaks the game down into elements I either hadn't even thought of or completelytook for granted. If you are serious about your game and buy this book Iguarantee you will not regret it! Buy it now! ... Read more

Product Description

Inspired by his father’s unexpected passing, Mike Walsh, a 27 year-old Chicago advertising executive, quits his job to embark on a one-of-a-kind quest. The destination: bowling alleys in each of the 50 states. Though dubbed "career suicide" by colleagues, the endeavor soon touches a nerve among many people—from frustrated middle managers to radio talk show hosts to a woman who merely identifies herself as "Bowling Spice" in an innuendo-laden email.

Conversations and adventures with the people he finds in bowling alleys at all hours of the day and night—retired Maine lobstermen, saucy European nannies, recovering addicts, former bowling champions, college students, World War II vets and lingerie saleswomen, to name a few—combine to form a picture of what America looks like while standing in a pair of rented shoes.

Hilarious, insightful and at times moving, BOWLING ACROSS AMERICA is an epic journey that will enthrall readers everywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed it.
I can across this book when I was searching Amazon for bowling shoes.I really enjoyed this book and am still trying to find something I can try to accomplish in all 50 states.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Mike Walsh, Please
I was given this book as a gift and I read it with no expectations.Well, maybe that's not correct:I expected a book about bowling.Instead, I got a delightful book, full of humor, about discovering one's identity and uncovering what is truly valuable in life.Sure, bowling serves as the thread that weaves throughout the book, but the tapestry that is woven by the bowling experiences is one of life and learning and even love. This is truly, in many ways, a modern coming of age classic. In our society, today, we don't come of age overnight and we don't come of age as early as generations past--generations that grew up in simpler times.Without the right impetus, today, many of us never "come of age."But through a return to simpler times--times when bowling leagues flourished--Mike Walsh found the meaning of life and shared with his readers his coming of age saga as it spanned fifty states and even more bowling alleys. As I read the last pages of this book I found myself hoping that Mike Walsh would someday soon take me on another adventure--that he would write another heartfelt book.I can't recommend this book highly enough.Whether you're a bowler or just someone who likes a good book, pick up a copy of "Bowling Across America".You won't be disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars A strike!
An enjoyable and amusing book about the author's road trip to bowl in all 50 states, inspired by his recently-deceased father's goal to play handball in all 50 states. Written in a very funny, conversational style, we tag along on visits to bowling alleys ranging from a classy Manhattan one with a $20 cover charge and a bouncer, to dark, smoky dumps in seedy neighborhoods. At each alley, we are introduced to the characters who work there, and the colorful patrons Walsh engages in conversation. En route, he stays with just about any acquaintance who can provide him with a bed (or floor) for the night, from former bosses and classmates to friends of friends. His hosts for the night can be as quirky as the bowlers he meets, and plenty of partying and beer consumption occur. Walsh quit his job as an advertising executive to take this trip and write about it, and I hope that he has found a new calling as an author--it would be a shame not to read more from him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
This is a great read.I laughed out loud from beginning to end, even though there were moments of seriousness in the book, the fun experiences and Mike Walsh's ability to convey the humor was terrific.Great for mature audiences due to some bad language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bowling Across America
I am proud to say that I was Mike Walsh's fifth grade teacher. This is a fabulous book and it will keep you laughing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Weight Training Book
I'm sure this is a good weight training book but it links
very few of the excercises to actual bowling improvement.

1-0 out of 5 stars More Bodybuilding Type Nonsense
Bowling at the top level requires good physical conditioning and unfortunately this isn't the book to provide that kind of information.Lots of isolation exercises and typical workouts from the bodybuilding era.I'm not sure if they realize most people reading this book aren't on steroids and would benefit more from a general strength and fitness program, more than they would from the program laid out in this book.Overall hugely disappointing and further perpetuating training programs that don't make sense for an athletic population.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad book
I just got this book and just read the table of contents. The first thing I noticed is that it only has 6 pages on leg exercises.I am becoming a good bowler because 50 percent of bowling has to do with having strong, quick, and flexable legs and knees.Yet he only has 6 pages on the subject of leg exercises and the reccomended exercises with legs.

Another reason why I am starting to get good at bowling is because chest mussles a long with back mussles are very important at bowling.Working on my chest and back mussles will increase my bowling greatly.Having strong chest mussles, good strong Abs, and back mussles is 25 percent of being in good enough shape to be a good bowler.

He has 4 pages of exercises on Chest exercises and 4 pages on Back exercises and 5 pages on Abs.So 75% of what you need to be in shape to be a good bowler he only used 17 pages out of a 64 page book.

Now he does have 4 pages of exercises on Biceps and Forearms Exercises. These exercises are important to being a good bowler. If I had to say about 20% of what you need to be a good bowler. So the book is a total of 64 pages and in 21 pages he has 95 pecent of the exercises that will help you become in shape to be a good bowler.

Having strong shoulders is a very small part in becoming a good bowler.I would say maybe 5 percent.Yet he has 5 pages of exercises on it.The good news is that if you want to know in my opion what exercises you need to due to be in shape for bowling all you have to do is read 26 out of 64 pages of the book.

The rest of the book while it will make a great work out program and make you in beter shape. It should not really help you in your bowling game because you are just doing exercises that really don't have to do with mussles that will help in bowling. However if you wanted a general weight lifting book these pages might come in handy.

Was it worth me buying yes because 21 of the pages are really going to help me in my bowling a lot and 5 pages are going to help me in my bowling a little the Shoulder Exercises. Is 21 pages of great help and 5 pages of little help worth 20 bucks?I say yes because it is the only book on Weight Training for Bowling out there. So I would say spend the 20 bucks and read the 21 pages and do those exercises.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad
Not a bad little guide.
BTW it's cheaper to just buy it from the author's website.....just look at the 2nd page of the excerpt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tex McFaden's Review of The Ultimate Guide...
It's not only the "ultimate" guide to weight training for bowling, but I think that it's the ONLY guide to weight training for bowlng. Obviously, anyone could build a workout program to strengthen their body, but it's nice to have a resource provided by knowledgeable folks to make it easy for you. This guide provides an easy to ready plan, complete with pictures, to help bowlers improve their strength. The purpose is to help bowlers ultimately improve the explosive quality of the ball in the pocket, from the first roll to the last. This is most critical when bowlers get caught in a long day at competitive meets where they are sure to bowl more than three quick games. The stress of competition can easily tire a competitor physically, so physical fitness is a must. This book walks you through the stretching and the exercises and a rotation plan that uses four different training programs. It's a short, to-the-point book that may be a no-brainer to fitness buffs, but still serves as a handy reference to keep everyone, at any level, focused and fit. The rating is based on the fact that the book accomplishes its stated purpose and meets the expectations that anyone should have for this book. ... Read more

Product Description
Does contemporary Internet technology strengthen civic engagement and democratic practice? The recent surge in online community participation has become a cultural phenomenon enmeshed in ongoing debates about the health of American civil society. But observations about online communities often concentrate on ascertaining the true nature of community and democracy, typically rehearsing familiar communitarian and liberal perspectives. This book seeks to understand the technology on its own terms, focusing on how the technological and organizational configurations of online communities frame our contemporary beliefs and assumptions about community and the individual. It analyzes key structural features of thirty award-winning online community websites to show that while the values of individual autonomy, egalitarianism, and freedom of speech dominate the discursive content of these communities, the practical realities of online life are clearly marked by exclusivity and the demands of commercialization and corporate surveillance. Promises of social empowerment are framed within consumer and therapeutic frameworks that undermine their democratic efficacy. As a result, online communities fail to revolutionize the civic landscape because they create cultures of membership that epitomize the commodification of community and public life altogether. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Making a Difference
In an upside down world, where white is black, and black is white and we're groomed to believe the perception is the reality; Sarah Bowling does a masterful job of cutting to the chase on issues. Based on the premise that all our learning and growth is to no avail unless we're making a difference; she addresses the realities that ought to comprise the difference we're making. This is not a soft-soap message of faith. She deals with spiritual truths in non-religious lingo, using global examples of those who have made a difference in face-offs when the status-quo has been upside down. She combines an elegance in her writing style with an out-of-the-box approach to the pathway she maps, that makes "How to Keep Your Faith" a compelling and stimulating read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Plan for Positively Revolutionizing Your World
Ignited with a vision for becoming a world changer, Sarah Bowling writes with passion, conviction, and fervor as she challenges the reader to become a revolutionary for the cause of Christ.

"How to Keep Your Faith in an Upside-Down World" is filled with stories of modern day, and Biblical heroes who have had an impact on their world.Sarah has collected a most amazing selection of biographical sketches and vignettes from the lives of well know Christians, leaders in business, and in various walks of life. These stories exemplify what one individual can accomplish when motivated by an idea, a dream, and the willingness to revolutionize their community, neighborhood, and their entire world.

Sarah's writing is articulate, strong, and engaging. She has filled the pages of the book with thought provoking challenges, stimulating illustrations from the scriptures, application questions, inspiration, and motivation. She shows the reader how to change both personal attitudes and thought patterns and gives a clarion call to turn the world upside down for Jesus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great first book!
This is an excellent book for beginners, it covers all the basics and is easy to understand. It tells you not just how to bowl, but all about the sport including equipment, types of lanes, scoring, even what pins and balls are made of.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginning bowler and teenagers
There is some really good information in this book for beginning bowlers; however I recommend it for teenagers wanting to get into the sport. The author and photographer did a good job of putting a lot of photos in the book to demonstrate their points.I would give this book to a kid or teen wanting to get into the sport. If you are an adult wanting to try the sport or looking for fundamental advice then buys Bowling Fundamentals, you'll be happy you did.

4-0 out of 5 stars a big step forward
As a bowling player since 1996, now aged 62, i'm still trying to progress. I would like to add at least 10 pins on my 175 average. In this book I have found many suggestions to play a better bowling. As a coach for a team of young bowlers aged from 14 to 18, i am going to reconsider my methods. A good value.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dry - and I'm not talking lane conditions
I agree with one of the reviews that I read here about this book.BORING.Unless you are a robot, do not buy this book.I like lots of detail on the mechanics and science behind the game with illustrations. The book accomplishes this on some fronts by showing the 3021 technique and some other useful tips, but it fails in not showing others. It does not delve enough into the hook release and shooting at strikes + lane conditions.

This book does have a lot of illustrations and it does give you the basics, however, this book focuses mostly on bowling drills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bowling Steps to success
I loved it I love bowling. I love getting turkeys every time I bowl. I've not missed an turkeys since I read this book it's my lucky charm and I carry it in my bowling bag.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Bowling: Steps to Success by Robert Strickland
Robert Strickland's book is a great book for the individual wanting to understand the mechanics and technique needed for building a solid bowling swing. There are step-by-step drills provided, along with success testsfor each drill.Having bowled with a poor technique for years, this bookhelped me to see how much I was doing incorrectly, and why my scoring wasso inconsistent.I have applied many of the principles Strickland outlinesto my own bowling technique, such as using a four-step delivery, as well asthe timing of each arm motion with the feet in the swing, and have foundgreater success and consistency in hitting my mark on the lane. Whilevariances will inevitably occur with each bowler (for example, I need tostart with my knees bent more deeply, as I tend to lift my shoulders anddrop the ball at the line, whereas Strickland recommends a more upright"snooty" posture at the outset of the swing), it is a good bookto "review the basics" and check your own technique against.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good all-round book...
Bob Strickland uses all his experience to write an excellent book covering all aspects of tenpin bowling.Bowling is an extremely difficult sport to master, but Strickland takes the difficult areas (and the easier parts) andmakes them easier to understand. In no other book have I seen so muchdetail given to areas such as the delivery, the release, the psychology, and the all-out approach to the game. However, if there was onediasdvantage to this book, it would have to be the immense amount oftraining drills that it contains. They may be useful for some, but manyinvolve the use of other knowledgable bowlers, or a long bowling session,or the need to bowl in a league.I actually think that some of them shouldbe omitted from the book, and a bit more information about thetechnicalities of the game included. However, I would recommend this bookto anyone looking more seriously into bowling.I would then recommendlooking at "From Gutterballs to Strikes", by Mike Durbin, just toadd a little bit more zip to your game. ... Product Description
An entertaining and revealing history that charts the hopes, dreams, fears, and frustrations of Americans as they pursued the good life in an age of affluence.

The years immediately following the Second World War witnessed a dramatic transformation of America's working-class suburbs, driven by an unprecedented post-war prosperity and a burgeoning consumer culture. Chrome and neon were the new currency in this newly vital consumer culture, and no post-war consumer products trafficked more heavily in this currency than diners, bowling alleys, and trailer parks. Through these three distinctively American institutions, Andrew Hurley examines the struggle of Americans with modest means to attain the good life after two long decades of depression and war.

He tells this story of the humble origins, explosive growth, and gradual, sad decline of the diner, bowling alley, and trailer park in expert fashion. This is cultural and social history that knows how to entertain. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, Easy Read.
I urge anyone to check this fascinating, brief snapshot of 20th century American culture. I've loaned this book to several friends, and they all loved it as well.

I actually bought mine used for a couple of bucks. Well worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cultural icons and what they say about society
The title of this book essentially describes the entire focus of this book; how three uniquely American icons: diners, bowling alleys, and trailer parks, and the history behind them, reflect the socio-economic and demographic history of the USA after WWII.

Divided into five chapters, an intro, a conclusion, and one chapter for each cultural icon, the book goes to show how the birth and evolution of each of these three icons mirrors much larger changes within American society. For example, trailer parks came about to house the huge concentrations of labor formed by the rapid industrialization during and after WWII.As America suburbanized, trailer parks became stigmatized as backwards and overly affiliated with blue collar labor. They and their residents became targets of hostile legislation, negative stereotypes, and other slights.

A similar trajectory is described for diners.Again their presence came about to serve the concentrations of industrial labor formed in the first half of the 20th century. But as America suburbanized, fast-food chains took over in the suburbs and leaving diners with essentially the scraps of the older cities.

A different path is described for bowling alleys. Here, the technological advance of automatic pin setters allowed bowling alleys to change with the times and upgrade themselves to new, wealthier suburban tastes. Therefore, of the three cultural icons, only one, the bowling alley, is still a vibrant and solid fixture in the American landscape.

All in all a good book. The final chapter wraps up with a synthesis of American 20th century economic and cultural history, and how this is intertwined with the history of diners, bowling alleys, and trailer parks.I recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars working class dreams in the consumer paradise
Hurley offers an insightful, thought-provoking, and at times disturbing picture of three emblematic popular institutions of post-war America. While all came out of working class roots and emerged as popular features in the wider popular culture of the 1950s, each industry found different ways to negotiate its relationship with its working class roots and its aspiration for access to a wider mass market.Hurley shows how working class Americans, emerging from the economic trauma of poverty and the Great Depression, sought through consumer culture to redefine themselves as middle class, even as middle class Americans often created new kinds of fashion snobbery as a way of redefining the new aspiring working class/middle class as crass or vulgar.

Hurley explores the emergence of the new mass market that emergence with relative working class affluence after the Second World War, while properly noting the limitations of that affluence. He also explores how this new mass consumer market, shaped by advertising constructs of domesticity and family togetherness, both limited, and even excluded women and minorities (especially African-Americans, who continued to be the target of the most vigorous economic discrimination and exclusion) through the 1960s and 1970s, even as the mass market ideal was crumbling under new challenges generated during the 1960s that sprang from many of the impulses unleased by American consumerism itself.

This is a fascinating and indeed entertaining work.Yoy can learn a lot about the social and cultural history of diners, bowling alleys, and trailer parks, but beyond that, you can get a valuable insight into some of the larger forces that have shaped who we are as Americans, both for better and for worse.

4-0 out of 5 stars Social history along the highway
This is essentially a book of social history, although it brings together the disciplines of economic history, gender studies, architecture, and popular culture. Hurley discusses how diners, bowling alleys, and trailer parks reflected the social values of the 1950s and 1960s. The chapters on the three building types go into excruciating detail; for example, every nuance of diner design and operation is discussed and scrutinized for meaning. The book would have been improved if the author had covered more building types in the same number of pages.

Hurley's overriding theme is laudable: On the outskirts of most towns, there is a region that constituted that community's "commercial strip" during the 1950s and 1960s, before America discovered fast food, shopping malls, and big-box stores. Most of us drive through these past-their-prime commercial strips every day, seeing nothing but obsolete buildings. Hurley points out that these obsolete commercial strips are the equivalent of archeological sites, speaking volumes about how family values have evolved during the past half-century.

3-0 out of 5 stars Diners, Bowling Alleys and Trailer Parks
This is a well researched book that kept me involved and thinking. As one from the midwest and born post-boom (1966), I accept the challenge Dr. Hurley offers about society. Are diners, bowling alleys and trailer parks just kitch or are they still valid measurements of social class?

As a person born in Cleveland, Ohio, raised in Rockford, Illinois and attended college in St. Louis, Misouri,I do not know if I should be flattered or insulted by the references to these cities.I find this a quandary because I know the information presented it is true.

This book makes me reflect on my own Ellis Island imigrant heritage. How did I not grow up at the diner, bowling alley or trailer park?I feel a bit sorry I did not. ... Read more

Product Description
"The new edition of Research Methods in Health continues to provide an excellent broad based introduction to the subject. New or expanded sections, for example on the evaluation of complex interventions, mixed research methods, life history interviews, and socio-psychological theories make this third edition well worth purchasing. The content is clearly presented and at a suitable level for its intended audience of health professionals and post-graduate students in health and health-related social sciences."
Virginia Berridge, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK

"Research Methods in Health provides a comprehensive guide to the variety of methods for studying and assessing health and health services. The book not only covers all the topics you need regarding research methods, but also looks into the wider aspects of health and health services. I especially liked the way the book didn’t jump straight into research methods and methodology, but took time to introduce some of the main sociological and psychological concepts and ideas, as well as looking at demography and epidemiology ... Each chapter is introduced in easily understood terms and ends with the main points concisely summarized ... Throughout the book clear examples are very well used to build on our understanding of key concepts and at the end of the book is a very useful glossary of terms."
Conor Hamilton, Student Nurse, Queen's University Belfast, UK

"The additional information in this third edition, for example the coverage of mixed research methods and pertinent social science concepts makes the third edition of this book stand out as a preliminary source of information for anyone looking at research and health ... The summary of main points, key questions and key terms are outstanding and allow the book to be adapted into an essential revision tool as well as adding support and a focal point during reading the book."
Lisa Perraton, Student Nurse, University of Chester, UK

"A very simplified text book of research that guides students through different research designs/methodologies. I think this book must be recommended to every research student."
Moses Murandu, Wolverhampton University, UK

This bestselling book provides an accessible introduction to the theoretical concepts and descriptive and analytic research methods used in research on health and health services. The third edition has been thoroughly revised throughout to include updated references and boxed examples, with additional information on key methodological developments, among them:

  • Complex interventions
  • Mixed research methods
  • Psychometrics
  • Secondary data analysis
  • Systematic reviews
  • Pertinent social science concepts
The research methods described cover the assessment of health needs, morbidity and mortality trends and rates, costing health services, sampling for survey research, cross-sectional and longitudinal survey design, experimental methods and techniques of group assignment, questionnaire design, interviewing techniques, coding and analysis of quantitative data, methods and analysis of qualitative observational studies, and types of unstructured interviewing.

The book is grounded in the author's career as a researcher on health and health service issues, and the valuable experience this has provided in meeting the challenges of research on people and organisations in real life settings.

Research Methods in Health is an essential companion for students and researchers of health and health services, health clinicians and policy-makers with responsibility for applying research findings and judging the soundness of research. ... Read more

As wrote in title, it is really good book and fast shipping. I am satisfied!
Thank you!

.
I am studying epidemilogical methods. I used this book one year ago for an introductory course. I did not enjoy the book, and my group (8) wanted their money back. I stopped reading the assignments out of the book half way through the course. The alternative readings were longer, had more depth, and were more fun.

This book is a worldwind tour of health research methods. That's the problem. They try to cram it all in, in one book. The writting is therefore quick and dry : p

I want to say something nice: You could use this book as a mini-mini-mini encyclopedia. If you were reading an article and found a study design that you are not familiar with, you could consult this book for the 30 second overview of a method : )

If a professor ever asks you to buy this book, remember: you will likely never use this book again after your course. Borrow or buy a second hand copy. Even better, go to the library and read it there. Or how about skipping these readings alltogether? ; ) ... Read more
