Editorial Review

Book Description
There is a relatively high use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), especially dietary supplements, among people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Health professionals with CAM information can improve the quality of patient care by guiding patients away from possibly harmful therapies and, if appropriate, towards low-risk, possibly effective therapies.

Dietary Supplements and Multiple Sclerosis is meant to be referred to when people with MS ask a question about a particular dietary supplement. Supplements are arranged in alphabetical order under the most commonly used name. In addition, the index contains a listing of these common names as well as less common names that may be encountered. The main information about the supplements is written in a concise summary form that usually discusses only the MS relevance of the supplement.

The supplements selected for inclusion are those with specific MS relevance, such as those that are known to be used by people with MS, have claimed efficacy for slowing disease progression or relieving MS symptoms, interact with drugs commonly used to treat MS, and potentially worsen MS or its symptoms. Also, supplements are reviewed that are popular in the general population or are known to have serious adverse effects. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad intention & Questionable Credibility
Dear MS-er:
If you expect this book to present a "Complementary and Alternative Medicine Program" that can help you with your disease (As could be implied by the authers' profissional field), then you are mistaken. If you are looking for "Dietry Supplements" (As could be implied by the title of this book) then look else where.

If you need to read such silly claims like"Excessive Vitamin E can increase risk of bleeding" ( may I ask if this has been clinciallyproven? huh), then buy this book and enjoy.

This book makes me wonder, if it was written with the intention to help MS suffes or was intended to favor beta-Interferon manufacturers over alternative Medicin?

False claims in the book makes the authers' credibility questionalble.

A POSITIVE, yet challenging, approach in handling the subject would be listing those supplements that can benifit MS suffers instead of a list to warn about.

Logically, a satement like "No clinical proof that X supplement have any impact on MS" - does NOT imply that X spplement has NO impact on MS but rather it means that NO clinical trials were conducted to prove its effectiveness.

Surprisingly enough, TWO of the most exciting herbs, backed up with clinical experiemens -proven to positively impact MS (Turmeric -resommended by Dr. Weil- , Polypodium Leucontomos ).

More funny thing about this book is that it considers "Turmeric" which is an Indian food spices to be equivelant to "GOLDENSEAL"!!!!! and warns against its sedative impact!!! by the way, it doesnt mention Polypodium!!!

If I would comment on all rubbish claims in this book, I could endup with another book of its size or even more!

Take Care

5-0 out of 5 stars Jampacked with lots and lots of essential information those of us with MS need
WOW!I now no longer feel like I'm fumbling around in the dark about dietary suppplements and MS!Dr. Bowling thoroughly and objectively examines supplements and their effects on MS!How empowering it is to know that certain supplements have the side effect of nausea, which is my most frequent and bothersome MS sypmtom and the one thing I simply can't cope with.

No more Evening Primrose Oil for me!I've replaced it with Flaxseed Oil, which does basically the same thing, but unlike Evening Primrose Oil does not have nausea as a side effect!

I would gladly trade more physical disability if I just could find a way to do something about the nausea!

And even more important information, supplements that stimulate the immune system. Also of importance is the information on which supplements can cause liver damage, particularly important for those of us who are on one of the interferons!

With Dr. Bowling's excellent book in hand I am adding herbal supplements to my regimin, and I do notice a measurable improvement in my overall condition!

However, as all us MS'rs know, our lovely little disease has a tendency to go through periods when it kicks our butts less than at other times, and with that knowledge, I'll do an update on this review towards the end of this year.

Obviously, highly reccomended to anyone with MS!I'd pretty much put this in the category of a must-read book for my Sisters and Brothers with MS.

Doesn't having MS absolutely STINK?????

10/19/05As promised, I'm updating this review.Well, so far the improvement is continuing.Actually, I think it's a combination of several different things.I feel that the fact that I workout 4 to 6 times a week is also very beneficial! So this book still rates a 5+ with me! ... Read more

Book Description
From The Honeymooners to The Big Lebowski, from The Flintstones to Ed, bowling has rolled right down the middle of American culture like no sportor even pastimein the nations postwar history. This entertaining, illustrated history illuminates the place that bowling holds in the heart of America, as well as its loftier antecedents and the high-kitsch status all things bowling have recently attained. Let's Go Bowling! opens a wide cultural angle on the sport, from its alleged origins in ancient Egypt to its move to the United States (and indoors), from its starring role in TV, movies, and music over the past 50 years to the design and architecture of bowling alleys; from the social aspect of the pastime to the heights (and depths) of bowling fashionthe disinfected, two-tone shoes; the multicolored shirts with embroidered names, the glittering custom balls with matching bags. In colorful sidebars, readers will find a primer on bowling etiquette, a brief history of the worlds oldest bowling alley, and more. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Even though Earl Anthony was a lefty this book is written and photographed as if he were a righty. Too bad. It is a great book, but if you are looking for tips from a lefty look elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars What You Didn't Know You Didn't Know.
Earl Anthony has managed to pack so much information into this book it's really hard to know where to start this review.

Let's concentrate on something that had never occured to me to ask my coach, among many others covered in this book.

What is lift? Here was the answer in black and white. It was also easy to follow the concept that Earl was trying to get across.Additionally, the simple demonstration that Earl uses in the book really makes the concept even more lucid. I finally see good rotation on my ball, and has it ever made a difference in how well the ball hits the pocket!

This aspect of the game that is so important for anyone who is just learning to throw a hook. Why was it so well kept a secret? It wasn't but I didn't think to ask, duh!!!

This book belongs on any bowling fans library shelves.

3-0 out of 5 stars Review of Winning Bowling, by Earl Anthony
Earl Anthony's book, Winning Bowling, has several positivepoints.First, I found his concept of spare shooting in this bookvery helpful.Anthony outlines in shooting spares four basicpositions: Strike Position (which also corresponds to Crossover Line), Left Center, Far Left, and Far Right.Anthony essentially takes samples of each spare group and demonstrates what foot position and angle would maximize conversion.I have applied this to my technique, and I have been having greater spare conversion success. However, I found his discussion of shooting Strike Angles, and in particular the first Arrow Angle, somewhat unclear. This book is not one which will aid you in adjusting to given lane conditions, but rather, how to execute each kind of strike shot.In the book, there is no discussion of oily or dry lane conditions. Also useful are the "super secrets", and his description of faults in the swing.I discovered from this book that one of the major faults in my own swing was side-wheeling, and this discovery helped me to swing the ball straighter, as well as save the skin on my thumb! For the advanced bowler, it may not have as much pertinent information, but for the beginning and intermediate bowler wanting to understand the swing a bit better, it is a good book to have on the shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of technology markets
Yoram's book lives up to and even surpasses its catchy title, which by itself will provoke rueful smiles from anyone in the tech world. The book hits upon and explains a nascent but important trend today--- namely the creation of new markets using a range of disruptive and collaborative techniques and the massive stakes involved.Anyone who wants to understand what technology ecosystems are and their impact will find this book essential reading.I particularly liked the sections on derivative disruption and implementations, standards development organizations, and technology trending.

Another great feature of this book is it talks to you not at you. It's written clearly and it's easy to understand--Yoram's style is engaging and draws you in.

I would have no hesitation in recommending it highly to corporate technologists and market planners, management consultants, and people involved in analyzing and mapping technology portfolios and plans.I also think MBA students (and curriculums) will find it of great value.

You won't be disappointed with this book

Deepak Kamlani

5-0 out of 5 stars ....apractical approach to predicting innovation and market disruption
Solomon delivers on the book's premise...big time! In a very readable style, he offers creative concepts and well-researched examples promoting how deliberate versus random innovation can be applied to new products; with particular focus on predicting how existing technologies can disrupt and create value not only in their primary markets, but secondary markets, as well. Worthy of several reads.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book to be read by the entrepreneur and the investor
This book presents a useful analysis of the evolution of electronic technology from its recent past to the present and future trends.

The electronics- technology entrepreneur and the investor will both benefit from reading this book. "Bowling with a Crystall Ball" will help them analyze the past and make the best predictions and decisions affecting their next venture.

It is a very sobering read when one realizes the vertiginous speed at which changes have occured in the electronics industry over the last 30 years and realize that the "ball" keeps accelerating.

I highly recommend this book

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
I would definitely recommend Bowling with a Crystal Ball to ones who are either involved in a technology venture or about to be engaged in such.

The author is sharing his own real life personal experience along with theoretical examples which makes this book easy to associate with on a practical manor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, especially for younger strategic managers

5-0 out of 5 stars A brief history of bowling.
I never thought in a million years that I would end up an avid bowler; but that all changed when my younger brother began participating in Special Olympics bowling. I try to show up as often as possible to his games to cheer him on and a couple of times after his practice I played a few additional practice games with him for fun. Wouldn't you know it, I eventually caught the bug and I have been bowling ever since.

I saw this miniature book at the book store and decided to buy it in order to learn a little more about the game. Although the book is a short read, it is a well informed and interesting look at the history of bowling, complete with some really cool retro art work and pictures. It includes sections on `Innovations,' `Bowling Around the World,' `The Greats,' `Bowling Culture,' etc. This would make the perfect small gift - especially as a stocking stuffer - for anyone who loves the sport. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Kudos to Kouros
I've had several copies of Tom's book including the original `Par Bowling'. They never seem to find there way back to me. While there are various reasons why this is so, the foremost reason is the value of the content. Carmen Salvino a true legend of the game is reputed to have called Kouros after the release of the initial book asking him how he could publish all of this knowledge for $3.95 (original price). Actually, the term Tom used in the interview was that Carmen was livid (source: Phantom radio show). Personally, I've read, watched, listened, attended seminars, gotten certified as a coach, most of what I've learned and know has it's genesis in Tom's book. Yes, it's encyclopedic in nature, he explains the how's, why's when's, discusses exceptions etc. While it's true that the game has changed due to an evolving environment and equipment revolution, Tom's book remains a primary repository of bowling knowledge. Tom has been cited by other top coaches as being among if not the best.
Truly if bowling had a Mount Rushmore Equivalent, Tom's image would be there.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Scenic Technical Manual
Mr Kouros' tome combines a scenic tour of the game and a technical manual on how to play it. His chapter on the various releases alone is worth the cover price. Other insightful items include a behind-the-scenes peek at PBA Tour conditions and a thoughtful piece on the mysteries of the "mid-roll", probably the Holy Grail of all serious bowlers. Heavy stuff to wade through - then again it's never easy to haul pure gold out of them mines. I've read through the book a couple of times now and there is always something new to catch my attention. This book is the next best thing to a full-time coach. If you love the game, you should get a copy to keep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Bowling Book Available
I've read virtually every bowling book available (and quite a few that are out of print) and this is by far the best.

It is incredibly detailed, advanced bowlers will love it, new bowlers may be a bit overwhelmed at first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Par Bowling: One of the best books on bowling
Par Bowling is one of the great books on bowling. Kuros goes through all the intracies in the game. Well worth reading and studying. It has helped my game tremendously. The book does need to be updated to more modern conditions and it would be wonderful if Kuros could expand more on the ideas and even use more elaborate graphics. To some, the book may seem too detailed, but that is its strength. Kuros does a masterful job of breaking down the elements of good bowling and develing into them. He also is wide open to what's good bowling and what is not and also where one can be flexible.I especially enjoyed is talk abot "mid-roll" - a real secret to putting good action on ball.

5-0 out of 5 stars Par Bowling
An excellent book. It's not an easy read by any means but for any bowler looking to improve their average, this book is a can't miss! Kouros breaks the game down into elements I either hadn't even thought of or completelytook for granted. If you are serious about your game and buy this book Iguarantee you will not regret it! Buy it now! ... Read more
