Product Description

This book investigates the popularity and success of contemporary women performers in bullfighting culture, which has been framed by a discourse of 'traditionalist' masculinity. This examination of the changing situation of women in the bullfighting world is used to explore the ways in which gender is represented, enacted and negotiated in contemporary Spain.

The bullfight in the 1990s is in an ambiguous position: it is a 'traditional' performance in a changing consumer society. In order to survive, it needs to adapt itself to a wider social context and, in particular, to international media coverage. It is in this context that the current success of women performers is located. However, women performers are a contested phenomenon in the bullfighting world: there is heated debate over their acceptability, much of which focuses on the body. Moreover, the entry of women into the bullfight questions existing definitions of the sport's ritual structure and of gender relations in Spain.

Thoroughly researched and compelling to read, Women and Bullfighting addresses these issues and argues that existing traditionalist approaches to gender, bullfighting and ritual in Spain need to be revised in order to locate women bullfighters in the context of a richly varied culture which is increasingly affected by the media and contemporary patterns of consumption.

This provocative book will be of interest to researchers and students of anthropology, gender studies, sociology, cultural studies, media studies and Spanish studies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Toreras!
Pink's book discusses the phenomenon of the female presence in the plazas of Spain. The author uses Cristina Sanchez as a case in point, both through material gleaned from interviews with the torera herself as well as a thorough analysis of the ways in which the Spanish media conveyed Sanchez to the public.Of particular interest are Pink's keen observations of the "consumption" of Sanchez by the photographic lens.

At a more theoretical level, early on in the book, Pink situates Sanchez within an extremely thorough and comprehendable delineation of the history of the bullfight and traces the ways in which anthropologists have tried, not only to understand the wider, more cultural meaning of the bullfight but to explain it.Their various theories are described in an eloquent and thought provoking manner.

"Women and Bullfighting" is the ideal book for readers who want a different angle of the bullfight but will not sacrifice accuracy of detail in the process.Although now retured from the ring, and a new mother, Sanchez has left the door open for other women to take her cape. The subject of Women in the bullring is a highly contentious one that has been in circulation long before Sanchez but, without a doubt, will continue for as long as the national fiesta itself does. This book is an important document within the continuing debate about women and gender in the most machistic and traditional spheres of Spanish culture. ... Product Description

“Bullfighting is the only art in which the artist is in danger of death and in which the degree of brilliance in the performance is left to the fighter's honor,” wrote Ernest Hemingway in Death in the Afternoon. Art? Ritual? Sport? Cruelty? Though opinions are divided, one thing is certain—bullfighting sparks passionate responses. Supporters argue that bullfighting is a culturally important tradition stretching back thousands of years; while animal rights groups argue that it is cruel and barbaric, causing unnecessary suffering to both bulls and horses. In Bullfighting: A Troubled History Elisabeth Hardouin-Fugier brings clarity to this debate through an exploration of the long history of killing bulls as public spectacle.

This book is the first cross-cultural study of bullfighting, covering Europe, North America, and Latin America. Hardouin-Fugier shows how each continent has its own unique style and tools of the trade. For example, in North America, the favored technique is grabbing the bull by the horns, and in Europe the bull is run through with a sword. In the late 1700s bullfights became mass leisure activities, with paying spectators packing into arenas—the classic bullfight of popular imagination. It was at this time that the bullfight became a big business and the bullfighter became a celebrity. In this vivid and comprehensive history, Hardouin-Fugier also explores the extensive influence of the bullfight on art, literature, and culture from the paintings of Goya to the writings of Georges Bataille.

Enriched with many fascinating and sometimes disturbing illustrations, Bullfighting presents a discerning and intelligent approach to a divisive practice.  Hardouin-Fugier’s informative history will enthrall anyone who has been curious about bullfighting—supporters and detractors alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and important book
Actually, I thought that Hardouin Fugier's book was not an "anti-bullfighting screed" but an extremely well-argued and beautifully written account of the history of the corrida, written from the standpoint of resolute and steadfast but intelligent opposition. She avoids dwelling too much on the (usually unproven) allegations of some activists about the way that the bulls are treated before the corrida and talks about what we all know, that it is an indefensible activity in itself. She examines intelligently the myths that helped to glorify and glamourise bullfighting and those who make a living out of it. She examines the psychological appeal of the bullfight and gives credit where credit's due to aficionados and others who don't share her views but have contributed to the debate. One of the things she examines is the fact that euphemistic language and symbolism and rituals disguise the reality and frequently what the corrida is thought to be bears absolutely no resemblance to what actually happens. This book is a must read for anyone who feels strongly about the subject. If you are an aficionado you may, however, find this book extremely offensive, but not because there is anything crude or inaccurate within its pages, but simply because she is telling the truth and the truth hurts.

2-0 out of 5 stars An Anti-Bullfighting Screed
The Amazon editorial reviews are made out to suggest that this book is a dispassionate, evenhanded examnation of the history of the bullfight, and I purchased the book expecting as much. The book is nothing of the sort:it's an anti-bullfighting screed.

If you're a member of PETA, this book may be of interest. If you're an aficionado looking for a scholarly examination of bullfighting's past you will need to look elsewhere.

I give the book two stars, instead of one, because of the quality of the photos and paintings liberally supplied throughout the text. ... Read more
