It was played between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, with the Roughriders winning 23-19. The game was viewed by approximately 3.337 million viewers on CBC television, up from 3.202 million the previous year. The Grey Cup festivities began with a four-day festival that had over 50 events at several venues in downtown Toronto including the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, and the CN Tower. The festival area was bounded by Spadina Avenue east to Bay Street and from Nathan Phillips Square south to Lake Ontario. On the weekend of the Grey Cup, there was a "Celebration of Football" with games hosted at the Rogers Centre at amateur, high school, and university level, including the 43rd Vanier Cup, the CIS football championship. Excerpt: The 1981 Canadian Football League season is considered to be the 28th season in modern-day Canadian football, although it is officially the 24th Canadian Football League season. The Eastern and Western Football Conferences, which had carried on as separate and autonomous entities since the founding of the CFL in 1958, agreed to a full merger prior to the start of the 1981 season. With the merger the Eastern and Western Football Conference was dissolved and renamed as the East and West Divisions. The merger authorizes the CFL to have full authority over decisions, including the adoption of a full interlocking schedule for both divisions. In addition, the merger set up the CFL Board of Governors and the CFL Management Council to replace the Executive Committee and the General Managers Committee. The Montreal Alouettes ceased operations and folded after the 1981 season, although a new franchise (the Montreal Concordes) would be in place for the 1982 season. The Atlantic Schooners, based in Halifax, was suppose to have its first season in 1981, but folded before playing a game due to no stadium. Note: GP = Games Played, W = Wins, L = Losses, T = Ties, PF = Points For, PA = Points Against, Pts = Points The Edmonton Eskimos are the 1981 Grey Cup champions, defeating the Ottawa Rough Riders, 26-23, at Montreal's Olympic Stadium. Edmonton won their fourth-straight championship on a last second Dave Cutler field-goal. The Rough Riders' J.C. Watts (QB) was named the Grey Cup's Most Valuable Player on Offence and John Glassford (LB) was named the Grey Cup's Most Valuable Player on Defence. The Eskimos' Neil Lumsden (RB) was named Grey Cup's Most Valuable Canadian. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2896080 ... Read more

Excerpt: The West Division is one of the two regional divisions of the Canadian Football League. Although the CFL was not founded until 1958, the West Division and its clubs are descended from earlier leagues. The first organized football club in Western Canada was the Winnipeg Rugby Football Club, later the Winnipeg Football Club, a forerunner of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers which was founded in 1879. At the time the sport was generally called rugby or rugby football because its rules were similar to rugby union's, although this would change drastically in the coming decades. The first organized competition in the West was formed in 1888 Winnipeg Football Club, St. John's College and the Royal School of Infantry formed the Manitoba Rugby League, later re-organized as the Manitoba Rugby Football Union. Football was being played in what was to become Alberta and Saskatchewan by 1890, and by 1907 the new provinces had organized their own respective competitions and agreed to adopt the rules of the national governing body, the Canadian Rugby Union. A provincial union was not formed in British Columbia until the 1920s. The three provincial unions then in existence soon set out to create a unified Western Canadian competition, with the view that the Western champion should be able to challenge for the Canadian Rugby Union's new championship trophy, the Grey Cup. To this end, the Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta unions formed the Western Canada Rugby Football Union in 1911, with the Calgary Tigers winning the first Western championship later that year. Initially, the Western champions were not allowed to compete for the Grey Cup, ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1380912 ... Read more

Excerpt: Cal Murphy is a Canadian Football League Hall of Famer who earned his fame as a coach and General Manager for nine Grey Cup Championship teams. Cal Murphy joined the CFL coaching ranks in 1974 with the BC Lions under Head Coach Eagle Keys, and became Head Coach in 1975. He was fired midway through the 1976 season, and moved on to spend the 1977 Grey Cup Championship season in Montreal with the Alouettes under Head Coach Marv Levy. In 1978 he took the job as offensive line coach with the Edmonton Eskimos under head coach Hugh Campbell, and from 1978 through 1982, Edmonton won an unprecedented consecutive 5 Grey Cup Championship with the talents of football greats such as Tom Wilkinson, Larry Highbaugh, and Warren Moon. In 1983, Murphy was hired by Paul Robson of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and spent 14 years as Head Coach and General Manager. Almost immediately, Murphy set the tone that would define his career in Winnipeg as a tenacious competitor. He developed a reputation for finding top talent, and developed one of the most feared defenses in CFL history with the likes of Tyrone Jones, James "Wild" West, and Aaron Brown. In a controversial move, he traded away strong-armed and popular starting QB Dieter Brock to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for the smart...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=5175752 ... Read more

Excerpt: The Vanier Cup (in French: ) is the name of the championship of Canadian Interuniversity Sport football and the name of the trophy awarded to the victorious team. It is currently played between the winners of the Uteck Bowl and the Mitchell Bowl. It is named after Georges Vanier, the former Governor General of Canada and was first awarded in 1965 to the winner of an invitational event contested between two teams that were selected by a panel. In 1967, the trophy was declared the official "CIAU (now CIS) National Football Championship" and a playoff system was instituted. From its creation until 1982, it was known as the Canadian College Bowl. The game typically occurs in late November, although it is occasionally played in December. The 2009 Vanier Cup game was played at PEPS Stadium in Quebec City for the first time. It was played between the Queen's Golden Gaels and the Calgary Dinos. Queen's won the game 33-31 and captured their fourth championship and first since 1992. The Western Ontario Mustangs have won the most Vanier Cups (6), and have the most appearances (12). Sixteen teams have won the Vanier Cup, while four others have played for the championship but never won. There are seven active teams that have never appeared in the championship game. Logo of the Vanier CupThe Vanier Cup was created in 1965 as the championship trophy of the Canadian College Bowl. For the first two years of competition, the Canadian College Bowl was an invitational event, with a national panel selecting two teams to play, much like the system employed by American college football today. In 1967, the Canadian College Bowl was declared the national football championship of the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=228149 ... Read more
