5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite book from my favorite author!
I read The Moon By Night back when I was in Junior High, after reading the Wrinkle in Time series. L'Engle quickly became my favorite author and I read all her books. This one still held a special place in my heart. I absolutely fell in love with Zachary Grey (in love with a character in a book!) and he became the archetype for the kind of men I am fascinated by. My husband is somewhat like him. =)

And Psalm 121 became my favorite biblical passage because of its use in this book. The Moon By Night was very influential in my life. I also recommend _An Acceptable Time_, a very magical book, as Zachary crosses over to the Murray family story. (A Wrinkle in Time, etc.) That is my other favorite.

Excellent book! I still call it my favorite after all these years. Let it take you on the journey, you won't soon forget it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly great book about a summer romance!!
I think this book is one of L'Engle's best. It gives you the feeling that you're in the book and that you know the characters personaly. Vicky is drawn to Zachary Gray who is very troubled, and much older. While Vicky and the rest of the family are on a camping trip that will lead them to California, Zachary follows her, leaving notes at all of the campsites that he passes. Vicky meets Andy, who makes her feel comfortable around him. She doesn't know whether to stay with Zachary, the unpredictable one, or with Andy, the normal teenager looking for love. I can identify with Vicky in almost every way and i highly recomend it to anyone. A Ring of Endless Light is a good coice to read after this one because Zach's back........

5-0 out of 5 stars More than typical teen-aged angst
Every adult-in-the-making goes through at least one "difficult year." For Vicky Austin, that year comes when she's 14. She hasn't been able to do anything right (or it seems that way to her, at least!) for months, and now her parents have decided to tear her previously secure world apart. Dr. Austin is taking a temporary research and teaching position in New York City, leaving his small-town medical practice in another doctor's hands. The Austin family's home in Thornhill, Connecticut will be occupied by that other doctor's family, and that's where their pets will remain, too. But before they move into a New York apartment, the Austins embark on a cross-country camping trip - from Atlantic (Grandfather Eaton's home on Seven Bay Island) to Pacific (Laguna Beach, California, where they visit Uncle Douglas and Aunt Elena) and back.

It's an eventful trip during which Vicky has her first taste of romance, as she meets and is followed all the way across the country by a troubled and sometimes frightening rich boy named Zachary Grey. Zach's angry, hopeless response to life (which he fears losing at any moment, thanks to a rheumatic fever damaged heart) forces Vicky to confront twin demons that are making her own life miserable, in what L'Engle sensitively yet unsentimentally presents as something more than typical teen-aged angst. Vicky is part of the first generation to grow up under the shadow of the atom bomb, becoming aware of world events and their significance at the Cold War and nuclear arms race's height (this book's copyright date is 1963). She's become old enough, during her "difficult year" of being 14, to realize that she and everyone she loves can die at any moment; and she's also become old enough to ask herself whether or not God is really there. The love and respect she has for her grandfather, a minister and former missionary, can't save her from wondering if Zachary and others like him may not be right.

Although I didn't find THE MOON BY NIGHT as enjoyable a read as other L'Engle books because it was a bit too introspective for me (I'm used to more action and dialog, and missed it sorely as I ploughed through page after page of interior monologue), it is nevertheless the one I would most recommend to today's young readers. I was just a little bit younger in 1963 than Vicky Austin, and I remember only too well how it felt to know that my generation might not live to grow up - much less middle-aged or old - thanks to a world suddenly grown far smaller and more dangerous than the one in which our parents came of age. The children of post-911 should find plenty to identify with in Vicky's crisis of hope and faith, and much encouragement in its resolution. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't ever fret about finding a campsite again...
5/4/02

Whether you're a grizzled veteran or a newbie this will become your bible of California Camping. Of the three past editions I own, the 2001-2002 twelfth edition truly is the most improved. As Tom says in his introduction: "More than 5000 updates and upgrades have been made in the campground listings of this edition, the biggest makeover in five years, and the third major makeover in the 15-year history of the book." And it shows! Many of the directions are now detailed down to the nearest 10th of a mile. All new reservation numbers have been added plus web site information and the RV camps that accept credit cards and are wheelchair accessible are just some of the additional improvements.

To insure accuracy "... the page galleys were reviewed by hundreds of field scouts, including 200 rangers at Forest Service Districts and state parks. Research editor Stephani Cruickshank, faxed the galleys out to field stations, then personally reviewed each listing with rangers. A similar process was completed for every page."

So it is not only the most complete - with more than 1,500 campgrounds listed - but by far the most accurate. This book achieves the author's goal of making it possible to always find a spot for the night.

After living in California for some forty years, I've moved a couple of states to the north. I got this edition so I'd be up-to-date and able to show my kids and grandkids who live in California some of the wonders of the great outdoors in their beautiful state (without getting lost!).

3-0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag
Although I'm a huge fan of Tom Stientstra's "California Hiking" book I'm only lukewarm about the value of this camping guide. On the positive side, it's comprehensive, with detailed descriptions of hundreds of campgrounds throughout California. It's well organized, lucid, and easy to read.

The negative is that I haven't found the book very useful. That's largely a matter of target audience. The campgrounds listed tend toward the bigger, more established, more feature-rich, and (unfortunately) more popular sites. Readers who find themselves driving down the highway 30 minutes before sunset with no idea where to camp for the night will find this book a godsend. People planning a trip with a trailer, boat, or family will find it a valuable resource. But people like me, who prefer roughing it even when camping 10 feet from the car, and care more about scenery and tranquility than the number of amenities offered such as flush toilets and boat ramps, will have to look elsewhere. The campgrounds I've enjoyed most aren't listed in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very satisfied
We tent camp several times a year in different locations and have used past editions of this book. This new edition is the best. The maps and directions are very good. The author continues to use the "5%" icon which indicates a campground that is used by less than 5% of campers and typically is more remote. These are our favorite locations. I don't always agree with the ratings but we've learned that we're usually always pleased with a 5% site. This year we selected a site, hated it (too crowded), and found another wonderful location within 30 miles. There is no way we could have done this without the guide. We don't leave for a camping trip without it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lizzie fan!
Lizzie is only 13 years old but she's very spunky. When her mom is the chaperone of a school camping trip, of course, she freaks out. But, when her mom rallys the girls to get back at the guys after a water fight, she forgives her mom, and begins to have fun. But, then, she is embarssed out of her mind when her mom,Jo, takes her best friend and her bra shopping! This book was very good.

4-0 out of 5 stars When Moms Attack Review
"When Moms Attack" is a book divided into two parts. I've rated and and reviewed the two parts separately.

Part 1: 8/10 Lizzie and her class are going on a science field trip when the female chaperone becomes ill. Lizzie's mom decides to take over, and from there on out Lizzie is sure her mom will embarass her. Part one also has a subplot involving Lizzie's brother Matt and her dad in their attempts at cooking dinner while Lizzie and her mom are gone.

Part 2: 7/10 After talking to her friend Miranda about bras and noticing how her friends (and enemies) all have one, Lizzie and her friend Mirand decide to go bra shopping--alone. But they can't seem to convince Mrs. McGuire to leave them alone, and Lizzie is sure she'll be embarassed yet again. The subplot for this part involves Gordo, Matt, and Mr. McGuire trying to make a kung fu video since Matt wants to be the next sidekick to Jet Li.

Overall, I think this book is very good. The text was a little dry, but for the most part I think that it was fairly consistant with the series it was trying to portray.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lizzie McGuire When Moms Attack
The book I am reviewing is Lizzie McGuire When Moms Attack. This book is written by Kim Ostrow. I think this book deserves five stars because it is a great book! There's two parts to this story. Part one is about Lizzie going camping. The mom that is chaperoning can't make it, so Mrs. McGuire volunteers to help out. The problem is Lizzie wants to be away from her parents and brother for the weekend and just wants to hang out with her two best friends Miranda and Gordo. Find out if Lizzie can survive her mom or not. The second part is about Lizzie and Miranda going to get a bra and doesn't want Mrs. McGuire to go with them so they lie and say they are going to get school supplies. There's just one problem Lizzie isn't very good at lying. When they're about to go Mrs. McGuire calls Gordo to come shopping for school supplies. Lizzie and Miranda don't want to go shopping with him so Lizzie said, "I want a bra o.k., a bra. At that point everyone just is staring at Lizzie and Miranda. While they are at the store they run into their English teacher and Kate and Claire. What could be worse than this? If you want to find out if Lizzie and Miranda can handle this, read this book. I think this is a great book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A hot book!
I am a hiker, so I looked at the book from a hiking perspective and found it excellent. It is by far the best hiking book I've seen that specifically addresses the unique rigors of being in the heat for lengthy periods. Johnson has a nice little ranking system for each journey, from ranges from one star for easy treks and 4 stars for the strenuous ones. I do think his ranking system is just a trifle soft. Some of the hikes that get 4 stars aren't really that difficult, nor do they have exceptional elevation gains. But this is a minor criticism.

The bext part of the book is the descriptions of how brutal heat can wither the human body. Johnson gives helpful tips on how to protect your skin, face and eyes from the ravaging effects of the sun. I once hiked 24 miles Rim to Rim in one day in the Grand Canyon without sun glasses and can attest how vicious an experience that was on the eyes. He also stresses that you'll need a minimum of one gallon of water, per person, per hour when you're in 100+ degree temperatures. Many scoff and say, "That is too much water!" Believe me, it isn't.

All in all, a good book and one which every desert hiker or desert fan should own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dry Topic ¿ This is NOT!
This is the only book you will ever need for desert survival in any desert around the globe. It covers introductions to the world's deserts, with emphasis on North American deserts. The book covers general skills pertaining to desert survival (Water, shelter, food, navigation etc.) and also has sections on desert hiking, biking and photography that were good for the novice and refresher for the expert. The chapter on desert transportation was excellent and a subject often over looked in similar titles. Over all I found the book to be quite good for the novice hiker to experienced desert dwellers like extreme adventures and military types.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book has it all
I enjoyed this book because it was so complete. The author must have lived in the desert or must go camping each week! I found the information I needed on water purity that I hadn't found in any other survival book along with the latest directional tools.

I hope there is more to come from the author! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ready for giggles?
Are you ready for some fun? Do you love to see your kids laughing and wiggling? This book is for you.

Children of all ages will delight in joining in the fun. You'll sing, giggle and shake all those sillies out.

If you're having one of those days where the little ones just can't sit still, or they've been cranky and you need a good book- this is it.

Read, sing it, do it- what fun for the whole crew. This would be great for a day care, pre-school, or young group of children. They'll get creative and show you just how goofy they can be.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of Our Favorites
Our 18 month old first fell in love with Raffi's "Shake My Sillies Out" from a cassette tape of a Raffi concert. He would dance and smile, whether it was Raffi or Mommy singing the tune. Now we have the pleasure of reading the book together in "sing-song" style with the wonderful illustrations and repetition my little guy recognizes and enjoys. I am a teacher, as well as a mom, and fully back all of Raffi's song based books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great entertainment
This is a wonderful book for kids about getting the last-minute sillies out of them before they fall off to sleep. My daughter (4 months) is too young to understand it, but I love reading it as part of her bedtime routine and can't wait for her to understand it. (She does sit still and listen!) I also like how it is an illustrated version of one of Raffi's songs, so that when kids sing the song, they can know the words and relate to the pictures. I highly recommend this and other Raffi books and songs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong with June
I like my backcountry meals to come together easily at home from easily purchased ingredients, to be very lightweight, and to cook quickly in camp so they don't waste time and fuel. At the same time, I can't stand most packaged meals and find that simply adding boiling water to a packaged meal yields only UFOs: Unidentifiable (and inedible) Floating Objects. I'm not interested in wasting time, money, and weight on being "gourmet" in the backcountry. *The Well-Fed Backpacker* by June Fleming strikes the perfect balance for me. For her recipes that I like the best, the shopping is easy, the preparation at home and in camp is easy, the weight is light (especially Cheesy Bacospuds), and the taste is good to great. This is the most practical recipe book for backpackers that I know of.

4-0 out of 5 stars This Is The One
I went over the backpacking cookbooks offered on Amazon using the extremely useful viewable pages, and selected the three I thought were best. Of the three I purchased, the Well-Fed-Backpacker is notably more informative. It is in that class of books known as perennial favorites, first published in 1976 and still a very strong book today in its third edition. If you are buying one or three as I did, be sure to include this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars June's Recipes are Incredible
Having been out with June twice on winter camping trips, and having used her book for many of my own outings, I can say without reservation that when it comes to taking food to the outdoors, June knows her stuff.

Her house is always filled with wonderful smells of newly dried foods and experimental recipes. Fellow backpackers don't walk out of the dinner tent at night -- they roll out.

The beautiful part of June's philosphy is that she's realistic -- not all of us have the space and time to dehydrate our own food (like 75 percent of the recipes in that newer "Lip Crackin' Backpackin'" book from Rodale.) She encourages you to find the semi-prepared dried foods you need at the supermarket as a base, and then build from there as much as you're willing to experiment.

My favorite part of the book is a list of "one-liners," quick recipes you can throw together in a single baggie that are no-brainers to cook. They're delicious.

One note -- the latest edition was published in '86, I think. A few details in the book are dated, but 95 percent is still completely, utterly relevant. ... Read more

Rosehips, rich in vitamin C, will remedy scurvy. Poplar, red cedar, elm, and willow are preferable for friction fires. If stuck on a flat, shelterless desert, dig a shallow pit (east-west) to lie in; even a few feet can result in a 100-degree temperature change. This is the sort of information outdoor enthusiasts will find in Bradford Angier's classic guide to survival in the wilderness. Divided into four parts (sustenance, warmth, orientation, safety), How To Stay Alive in the Woods is packed with woodcraft tips and age-old tricks--and it's packable as well, so don't leave home without it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Some good ideas, but a bit outdated...
Although there is a good deal of information to be gained from this book, some of the information is a tad outdated. I have read through several similar books and in my opinion the US Army Survival manual as well as Wilderness Survival by Gregory Davenport does a much better job in helping a camper/hiker feel comfortable in knowing how to take care of themselves or others should the situation arise.

The initial copyright on the book is 1956; the writing style and information show their age... The discussion of wool being the best bet for cold weather seems a bit outdated. The writing style is unique and not the easiest to read. I wouldn't be comfortable if the only survival information I had were Angiers instructions and illustrations. I found that many of the other "survival" books do a much better job in explaining how to do a given task with step by step information. The illustrations leave much to be desired as I couldn't tell most of the edible plant illustrations from the poisonous ones, and I doubt I could match an illustration to an actual plant if my life depended on it...

In my opinion your best bet would be the two other books I mentioned before you considered this one...

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I have never had to use any of the information contained in this book in a susrvival situation but as a kid I did use the information about trapping and snares to catch rabbits in Alaska as a kid (I'm using the third printing 1966 version.) I also built snow shelters to play in. Everything I tried from this book worked.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tips for Survival
You are stranded in the woods, alone and scared. Bradford Angier's "How to Stay Alive in the Woods: A Complete Guide to Food, Shelter and Self-Preservation Anywhere" very well may save your life. Throughout the book, Angier gives important information which is also quite interesting. He covers main topics which are the focal point if each chapter. Most ideas and tactics are generally understandable, although the illustrations are downright ridiculous at times. The moments that leave you thinking "that was a brilliant idea" are often interrupted with common sense tips that make you wonder what age group the book is intended for. Detailed explanations of practical knowledge draw attention from several parts of the book, which results in numerous low points. In conclusion, this book makes for a decent read, but lacks the qualities which would make it a book that you would like to own. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book Filled With Excellent Tips on Canoe Camping!
Before setting out on our first trip to the BWCA five years ago, I bought Cliff's book. I read it cover to cover and found it packed with practical information that helped make my first trip (and all my subsequent trips) completely enjoyable. I've re-read the book every year since. I've followed Cliff's tips, and he's never let me down. Yes, put the groundcloth inside your tent, and you'll never have a wet sleeping bag. Use a tumpline when portaging .... it relieves a the stress of carrying a heavy pack. Don't hang your food in a tree, unless you want a bear to to find it! Follow Cliff's tips. I've heard him speak on the subject of canoe camping several times...and he brings many years of valuable experience. I highly recommend reading this book before taking your next canoe/camping trip!

5-0 out of 5 stars Boundary Waters Canoe Camping...With Style
An excellent book for anyone who is interested in canoeing, camping or the B.W.C.A. Timely information for the first timer in the BWCA or for those that have made many trips. Well written and illustrated. A must for the Boundary Water traveler!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Perspective
Reading the other reviews submitted about this book, one would think that it is either the best or the worst book ever written about the special requirements of canoe camping in the boundary waters. Well, it is neither. I take a 14-plus day trip to the Quetico every other summer, and have travelled many of the most challenging and remote routes of the park. The value of this book is that it offers one set of ideas as to the best way to go about one's business in the wilderness. These ideas are not definitive, and I flatly ignore many of them. That said, I have also adopted some of the ideas found in the book, or at least reconsidered my tried and true methods based on some of the author's recommendations. If you're looking for a book to stimulate you to think about different ways of doing things in the woods-- this is a good choice. If you're a beginner, this isn't a bad place to start, but it would be a bad place to stop. There are as many different ways to go about travelling in canoe country as there are lakes in the Quetico. Almost all have something to offer. None are perfect. This book is worth reading as part of the exploration and learning process. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sharing McManus is my mission
I own an almost complete collection of Pat McManus's books and keep them in my drafting lab to share with my students. I require them to read for the first 15 minutes of each 90 minute block, giving me time to complete paperwork or prepare for demonstrations/lectures/testing. My books are now lovingly tattered from their status as preferred reading material. I overhear students sharing favorite bits with each other ("A Good Deed Goes Wrong" in particular.) They come to class quickly to grab their favorite book or claim one they haven't read yet. It is a delight to see them enjoy the books and humor I love so much!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent (and hilarious) resource on camping!
We have two copies of the previous edition of this hilarious book in our elementary school library. This is the first title I recommend to students requesting a book on camping.

It is also a great read-aloud to upper elementary age students, and since each topic--such as ants, beef jerky, cooking fire, gorp, knives or wire coat hanger--is usually less than a page in length, it's an excellent, quick time-filler. I usually just have to read a couple of these sections, and the kids line up to put this McManus classic on hold.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good
i got this book as a christmas gift. ive been hooked on Patrick F. McManus since. all of his books are funny, but this is one of the best. its the kind of book that anyone can enjoy both young and old (though there is some language that the parents of younger readers may not approve of) ... Editorial Review

"The first axiom for camp is... do not make yourself uncomfortable for want of things to which you are accustomed," advised The Complete Indian Housekeeper and Cook in 1890 to high-born Brits living in India, most of which England had by that point colonized through a succession of wars, or military "campaigns," throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. This impeccably curated, insightfully narrated, and richly illustrated volume proves that the homesick subjects of the Raj took such advice deeply to heart. It showcases nearly 200 years of furniture designed expressly to approximate all the refinement of a proper British household inside the canvas tents of ranking officers afar, but also to break down and fold up fast for easy, compact transport (hence campaign furniture's other appellation, "knock-down" furniture).Masterfully put together by independent curator Brawer, previously a researcher in the Indian and Southeast Asian departments of London's venerable Victoria and Albert Museum, this handsome volume succeeds on two levels: it amply highlights the stylistic elegance and technical ingenuity of this kind of furniture--a bureau that becomes a bed when its drawers are removed; a lady's bidet that folds into a leather case; or a dining table seating 20 that fits inside a 10-inch-deep box--while putting it (often quite wryly) in the historical context of an expatriate society that sought to re-create Britain wherever it went and had little or no interest in adapting to or learning about the customs or designs of the people it conquered (and essentially enslaved). Throughout, Brawer includes excerpts from a fascinating array of letters, journals, and other documents of the period, and an excellent pictorial directory of the furniture's craftsmen and manufacturers helps make this impressive tome invaluable for collectors, design historians, Anglophiles, and Merchant-Ivory set designers alike. --Timothy Murphy ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lavish Coffee Table Book on British Campaign Furniture
This book is a must have for anyone interested in English antiques, social, military, or naval history. I have never seen another book on this subject and it is filled with very interesting "before" and "after" photographs of dozens and dozens of pieces of campaign furniture "assembled" and "disassembled." I imagine this book has been a great hit in London.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh that all books were as beautiful..........
This is an excellent review of British Campain Furniture.

Each piece is photographed in colour and/or Black & White, discussed and given brief measurements. The "disembled" photos are of great use to anyone who wishes to reconstruct any of the items from the book, as well as satisfying the just plain curious. Some of the gadgets are fantastic.

Unfortunately, like most books of this type, the author is limited by the pieces that he can access within a year or two. I know there were 'Campaign' folding rocking chairs, and I an certain that there are other examples of furniture, with other systems of assembly ( Louis Vouton made a folding-bed-in-a-trunk for the Brazza Expedition in Africa in the late 1800's which survives - there is a single picture in 'Treasure Chests').

I can only hope that the author will be encouraged to keep looking & photographing, and that we may see a second volume in years to come.

Sorry Amazon, you just don't have enough stars........

Editorial Review

Sally can't wait. This affable black Lab and her human pal (appearingonly occasionally as a partially offstage arm or lap) are going camping in themountains. She's read all about the animals up there--rabbits, bears, moose, owls, beavers, skunks--and is itching to get to know each and every one. Theyload up the van with gear and plenty of dog food, and Sally snuggles down tosleep for the long ride, while visions of songbirds and berry-munching bearsdance in her head. This irresistible canine is well acquainted with road tripsafter her earlier trip to the beach (Sally Goes to the Beach). Doglovers especially will be amused by Sally's innocent ramblings and her dreamyfixation on food. Internationally acclaimed artist Stephen Huneck createsfantastic hand-carved woodblock prints of the stocky Lab (who also starred inhis My Dog's Brain) andmiscellaneous mountain critters, creating the kind of art that will linger longin a reader's memory. 5-0 out of 5 stars A book for any age!
Sally Goes to the Mountains is a book I would give as a gift to any dog lover from 4 to 94. It's colorful illustrations, charming and witty captions, subject matter and size makes it the perfect coffee table book. I'll cherish mine forever. I can't wait for the next "Sally" book and plan to visit the huneck.com website to choose a special framed print from this very special book.

5-0 out of 5 stars With bright, superbly crafted woodcut prints
In Sally Goes To The Mountains, author/illustrator Stephen Huneck draws upon his award-winning expertise to take young readers on a romp with a fun-loving black Labrador named Sally. Sally goes for a ride to the mountains where she encounters bears, moose, rabbits, and skunks! There are berries to pick, sticks to fetch, and a lake to swim in. Huneck's bright, superbly crafted woodcut prints perfectly capture the joy of a dog's outing in the mountains for young readers. Also highly recommended is the earlier volume of Sally's adventures, Sally Goes To The Beach (0810941864, [price]).

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for Huneck fans and animal lovers.
I bought this book for my mom as a present. She already owns the other "Sally" books and loved this one too. The illustrations are beautiful and very whitty. My favorite is the giant moose with Sally. The Sally books aren't just for Lab owners or children--any pet lover will enjoy them. ... Read more

Wintr Camp is an awesome ficton book by Kirkpatrick Hill. It is about a girl that they call Sister, and a boy named Toughboy. They live with a lady named Natasha. Natasha takes them to Winter Camp, they will stay there for a while. The log cabin is old, dusty, and the windows are cracked. So the cold air seeps through the walls.Toughboy and Sister have to do their chores everyday. One day a man named Nelson comes and gets kicked by a moose.Natasha checked to see if he was hurt, and they found out that he broke his arm. The rest of the story is about how Natasha goes to get help. I enjoyed this book because it was exciting, and it captured my attention. The theme or mesage in Winter Camp was that the old ways are good and the new ways are good too.

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 ½ Georgie Dans Le Forest
When the now iconic Man in the Big Yellow Hat warns Curious George,"now don't wander off and get into trouble," we know exactly what's about to happen instead (especially since he had already rushed off). Despite his good intentions, George adventures turn into misadventures: Dousing someone's campfire, getting lost with a galloping deer, and being sprayed by a skunk that George thought was a cat. As usual in these series (story by Margret Rey, with illustrations by a team in the style of the late H.A. Rey), George's curiosity also leads to some monkey heroics. He also learns how to get rid of skunk smell (a vat of tomato juice).

Given its forest setting, this is a somewhat quieter 'George book,' but there are soft forest and animal drawings and enough action for the small ones. Curious George is now "a registered trademark of the Houghton Mifflin," but the company encourages young readers to look for the 'original adventures about Curious George' by the Reys. 24 pages, with pencil and watercolor illustrations on each one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic essentials
I am planning to Summit Mt. Shasta in the upcoming year; however, I cannot even consider myself a novice--beginner, maybe. I have NEVER climbed before--this book gave me basic information that will help me to plan my trip...everything from general mountain climate to a packing list. Without reading this book, I am afraid I may have not known the essentials (basics) to take with me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Guide book designed to get you to the top...
After reading the review titled "A big disappointment" it seems the reviewer has misconceptions about the book. From his eyes, not knowing anything at all about Mt. Shasta and never climbing it before, he was looking for a book that would match climbing Mt. Everest or one that is so advanced that the reader climbing Mt. Shasta for the first time would have no choice but to "look elsewhere." It would be like writing a guide book and then adding a review that condemns the book because it does not have information about the American presidents. The reviewer talks about his extensive climbing experience in his bio.

The fact is there are at least 15,000 people (first time climbers) that attempt to climb Mt. Shasta a year and only a third make it. I would say at least 95 per cent of those that climb have never used an ice axe or crampons. The book is written for those people and it's designed to cover the Avalanche Gulch route only. Mountaineering is a sport and like most sports, you must understand the game. The book helps you understand the mountain and gives you the information that you need to make a safe and successful climb to he summit. It's a companion in your backpack!

1-0 out of 5 stars A big disappointment if you ANY climbing experience.
.... This guide of 170 pages devotes about 63 pages to climbing Mt. Shasta. The rest includes: discussions of internal frame vs. external frame packs, how to pack your pack, whether snow shoes are necessary in the summer (!), and such profound statements as "Good quality clothing protects your body from the cold and fierce winds that can generate on the Mountain." Beware of a book with two pages of acknowledgements including two acknowledgements to dogs! Or a climbing guide with a glossary that defines "peak," "run, "trailhead," and "summit." For a climbing guide to Shasta I expect more than just one detailed photo illustrating the route. I expect maps. And I expect the discussion of more than just one route up the mountain. Want to climb Shasta in the winter? Look elsewhere. Want the mileage and elevation gain in detail? Look elsewhere. The list goes on. Is this guide useful for anyone? Yes, it is useful for someone with no climbing experience at all. Anyone else, wait for the next guidebook to be published. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
This book is a laudable achievement for any avid outdoorsman; I can only thank Nessmuk for giving it to us. From reading it you can tell he knows what he's talking about. I've read it once and plan to do so again.
For any camper/outdoorsman this book is a must. It holds a wealth of information and once you read it you'll be ready to campout yourself! Sadly there is one negative about the book...its not long enough! I encourage you to buy it and spend an evening reading a delightful book on woodcraft!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mike
I have read "Woodcraft and Camping" four times. Each time I read it I learn more. It is for those who love nature in her "undress", as Nessmuk would say.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for camping nostalgia and wooden canoe buffs.
At the close of the 19th Century, long before the advent of ultralight gear, synthetics, and freeze dried food, Nessmuck was an advoacate of minimalist camping, his own load equalling about 26 pounds including his canoe, a 10 pound cedar strip wonder made by legendary wooden canoe maker J. H. Rushton. Nessmuk (the nom de plume of George Washington Sears) was 65 years old, weighed about 105 pounds and was probably suffering from tuberculosis when he decided to solo canoe the Adirondack Lakes. While much of his camping techniques are outdated, there is much in both his methods and philosophy from which even the most modern backpacker and canoeist can learn, and it is an excellent read besides. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Freddy is back and just as ornery
Probably before you were born, the bookmobile would stop off at our school and I looked forward to reading "Freddy" books. I enjoyed all of his adventures and friends (Jinx had a few adventures of his own). Now those books are collector's items and rarely show up in used book stores. As much as I miss the originals he is back and just as ornery as ever. One Day I hope the earlier one will get republished. In the mean time Even thought these books are geared towards young ones, they still can hold the attention of old codgers.

Kurt wise does a good job of illustrating and for those that have never reads Freddy you have a great mystery ahead of you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Freddy and the ghosts
This may well be the best of the Freddy books written by Walter R. Brooks (its only competition is Freddy the Magician). Children and adults alike will find this one of the most fun books they've ever read. I can still remember the delicious chills I felt when reading this book at twelve, and still enjoy reading it today. As usual, Freddy gets into trouble trying to help friends -- Mr. Camphor to get rid of his aunts and an innkeeper whose hotel is haunted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrfic Artwork & Charming Rhymes
My sons & I are long-standing fans of Mr. Magee and Dee since they took their boat out for a day on the sea. We were surprised when we found this new book where they go camping (or try to). Chris Van Dusen's art "makes" the stories. Every time we read this new story (& we have re-read it night after night), we comment on the sunset, the view through the trailer window, the poor raccoon getting out of the way all the time, the car heading down the hill the "other way", the view from the falls, and the freshly-cut lawn back at home. The story is delightful and fun to read time after time. And for those of you growing up in the 60's, the trailer in this book brings back memories of the one I always begged my parents to buy. I hope Mr. Van Dusen's working on his next Mr. Magee book.
