5-0 out of 5 stars Hikes for evey level of experience
We have just returned from hiking & camping in Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches And Canyonlands (Island in the Sky area), and found this book to be one of the best of any guide book we have used (over 30 years of hiking). The hike descriptions were so interesting I read them again after doing the hike! The description of how one gets to the trailhead in in a separate section titled "driving to the trailheads", which may cause problems for individuals who don't read scan through the chapters first before deciding on a hike. We found the descriptions of the trees and plantlife on each trail very useful and I would not hesitate to buy another of Ron Atkinson's guide books, they are obviously very well researched.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wow- Beg, steal or borrow another guidebook
Just back from a 9 day backpacking trip in Utah, using both this book and Adkison's book on Escalante. It left me with poor trail descriptions, (scarily) poor or wholly incorrect maps, and an "interesting" (read: madman-style insane) style of giving directions to trailheads. I am by no means new to the outdoors, nor to getting to remote trailheads, routefinding, etc; I can say with a degree of confidence that this is the poorest guidebook I have ever purchased. The second star is given for his "reccomended" hikes, which were, on the whole, generally right on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ron Atkinson's Hiking Guide to Utah's Canyon Country
Many people think that the best way to experience the unique landscapes of canyon lands parks is to drive through them. But you will have no sense of these places unless you get out of your car and take a walk. You don't have to be a backpacker to experience these places on foot. This is a great book for learning about the opportunities for short, medium and long hikes and for finding the hike that is best for you and your physical condition in Utah's great canyon country parks. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Actually GAve Me Nightmare!!LOL
Anyway!!,this novel is written by Howard the dog.(no really)and he tells of his scary adventure in the woods, with 2 strange fellas and their ugly dog with an attitude problem.
Cons..The story one of the dogs was telling was boring and took up too much space.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the other BUNNICULA books
This one was just alright. It's the second sequel to the classic original BUNNICULA. It's not really bad but it's boring in part; like I found the whole first chapter to be a bore.

It does get sort of scary in parts, but nothing major. Read it if you want. It's fun. But, for really good BUNNICULA bookds, I recommend: BUNNICULA, THE CELERY STALKS AT MIDNIGHT, HOWLIDAY INN, RETURN TO HOWLIDAY INN, CREEPY CRAWLY BIRTHDAY, THE FRIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HOT FUDGE, RABBIT-KADABRA, and BUNNICULA STRIKES AGAIN.

5-0 out of 5 stars It was a very good book it was interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loads of insider tips and information
I am a relatively experienced camper and backpacker, though by no means an expert. I have browsed lots of similar titles in bookstores, but Camping for Dummies offered the most detail, tips and understandable advise of any. The writer's style is humorous and easy-to-read and his obviously experienced advise has proved invaluable on numerous weekend camping trips already. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about camping, or simply anyone who wants to pick up some more tips and skills so you feel more like Indiana Jones when outdoors.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Great Beginers Guide
I have been camping and hiking for about 15 years so this book provided me with a lot of information I already know. However, I could have really used it as a long time ago. It provides a lot of helpful information for anyone who is still camping as a small hobby or anyone who wants to give it a try. It also serves as a nice reference guide/reminder to those of us who consider camping one of the main elements of our lives. But the hardcore campers out there really don't need it. I only gave it a three star rating because I've read other Dummies books on subjects I have extensive knowledge of and still learned a lot. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars 16 Great Western Vacations would be a better title.
To date I have used only a couple of the "trips" outlined by the author. Her data is definitely shy of specific rv information...just the skimpy basics. However, the "travelogue" sections are quite good on their own merits. Exclusive of the rv, we found much of her other information quite helpful and interesting. I hope the author revises the book and adds a healthy dose of really meaningful rv info.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not RV Related
The title of this book is deceptive. The author's major RV experience was in driving an 18' motorhome and she definately feels that anything larger is more like staying at home than camping. If you are interested in RV related material, this book is not for you. If you want a so so travelogue with minimal information about where to park your RV, you might like the book. The author obviously has no experience in using RVs in urban environments--something than most owners of large RVs do on a routine basis. I think the title is highly misleading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Will show you how to enjoy the outdoors well below zero!
This is really a great guide that just about covers every relevant detail on winter camping. Its been my springboard to extensive winter outdoor activity. In here you'll find all the basics: Gorman discusses everything from gear for travel like skis, to camping technique, to clothing, safety, etc. He presents modern techniques & tips but he also mentions traditional info. as applicable.

Specific to this edition of the book are a handful of new pictures but most of the material is almost the same as the earlier edition, which is to say great. Thus if you can't get a hold of this edition not to worry as the previous edition is as good.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute "must" for novice campers.
Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Stephen Gorman's Winter Camping continues to be a superb introductory "how to" guide for enjoying the special allure of winter camping. This comprehensive manual covers gear selection from tends and clothing to stoves and sleds; travel tips for skiing, hiking, and snowshoeing (including naviagion and ice travel); winter safety including weath and health, injury prevention, hypothermia, and winter rescue; and making camp including site selection, tents, snow caves, and snow houses. Of special value is the information on backcountry skiing and ski mountaineering. Exceptionally well laid out and organized, Winter Camping is an absolute "must" for novice campers, and has a great deal of value for even experienced winter campers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth buying
This is an excellent resource for beginner winter campers. I have read through all of the winter and snow camping books and literature available and find this one to be the most complete. Gorman mentions a lot of the details that many other authors leave out. You may notice as I did however, that the cover scene is used about five times throughout the book. A good book, worth it's price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Intro to Ultralight Backpacking Available
In my opinion, there's no other way to experience the outdoors than with ultralight backpacking... Using techniques spelled out by Kestenbaum in this book, you'll be able to actually experience the best of the backcountry in the best state of mind, without being burdened by a heavy load, or by having to think about setting up all the gear a traditional backpacker needs to be aware of.

By going ultralight, your mind is free to be immersed in the beauty and peace of nature, and that's the point of this whole book: to give you the tools you need to just be yourself, without attachments, frills, etc... just you and nature, the way it's always been. Buy this book, read it thoroughly, digest its philosophy, and start realizing the greatest gifts you have.. you will not regret it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction, But Short on Technique
This book was recently reviewed by Backpacking Light, the Journal of Lightweight Backcountry Travel. This is an excerpt from the review, reprinted with permission.
"The cover of The Ultralight Backpacker states: "The complete guide to simplicity and comfort on the trail." In our view this claim is overstated, as this slender book, 138 pages long, can be read in an afternoon and is far from complete and will likely disappoint the experienced lightweight backpacker yearning for new information about equipment and techniques not treated in other texts. However, for the newcomer to lightweight backpacking, The Ultralight Backpacker will not disappoint - it provides an introduction to lightweight backpacking that will certainly put you on the right track to shedding pounds from your pack."

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank God for Ultralight Backpacking
I never realized just how fulfilling and amazing nature can be until a friend of mine encouraged me to enroll in a backpacking class... the instructor was Ryel Kestenbaum, the author of this book. His methods and style were so right on, and it was clear to all of us how deeply passionate Ryel is toward going ultralight. It was one of the most enlightening weekends of my life, and it began a love affair with the wilderness that seems to get stronger all the time.

That was three years ago. Today, I've refined my own ultralight techniques to fit my personal needs, and they're not far different than what Ryel spells out in his book. Trust me, ultralight is the only way to go. You will love yourself for it, as well as every step you take into the backcountry. Why struggle, why be intimidated, why find any reason at all to not appreciate all that nature has to offer? Start with this book, use it as a springboard, and find out why ultralight backpacking is gaining so many followers. You won't regret it. ... Read more

This is a great basic book 70 page book on this subject. I have about 10 different books on camp cooking, and this one covers many areas of outdoor cooking including camp stoves, fire making, selecting the right pots and pans. How to pack lightly is covered as well as sources to find things. Then there are the recipes which all work great and tste delicious. 3-0 out of 5 stars Makes some assumptions on facilities
This cookbook had some limited use for me. It was a short introduction on tips for RV cooking. Overall some good general tips, but nothing that probably isn't in a good trade magazine. As an experienced camping and backpacking cook I was hoping for information on RV cooking now that I have a refrigerator. It does give some good recipes that utilize the better facilities of an RV. However about half the recipes assume you have an oven as well. My small Class B RV doesn't have an oven. Therefore, half the book is useless for me. Overall a slightly disappointing book that I wish I had looked over before purchasing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressed with this book
I found this book to be by far the most helpful and user-friendly guide to camping in Baja that I've yet seen. While it is purported to be The Complete Guide to More Than 170 Tent and RV Campgrounds, I found it to be much more than that. More accurately, it is, in fact, the complete guide for every aspect of venturing south of the border into Baja. This book tells you not only where to go and how to get there, but when to go and what to bring. It even discusses how to deal with such varied potential dangers as unsafe drinking-water and ice, stingrays, jellyfish, heatstroke, sunburn, getting hopelessly stuck in sand, or tangling with the police over a traffic accident. It even shows you how to clean a fish. In short, it had everything I needed to prepare for my trip to Baja. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs to be updated
I've traveled throughout Baja the last 2 years and found the book is very out of date. Many of the campgrounds mentioned have closed and some of the sites are no longer suitable for camping, for others, the nature/quality of site has changed. This can be a big problem if you've traveled to some out-of-the-way location expecting a certain level of accommodation and find it less than sub-par. HOWEVER, being a person who normally avoids the 'organized, Americanized' campgrounds the book is very useful and it is book worth having.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun in the Baja Sun!!!
This book was purchased while i was in baja. I traveled with walt petersons adventure book, but it lacked the info i was looking for, and this book did a great job of filling in the blanks. Having only traveled to Baja once, and hitch hiked for three weeks, this was the book i was looking for. It is a cut to the chase book with good recommendation, and good reviews of the camps in baja...happy travels, i wouldn't leave to baja without this one again!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Marcus' review on Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night
I liked this book because it's about camping and I like camping. The fish had a great picture. Henry's mother was setting up the camp and the really funny part was when Mudge unpacked a ham sandwich and it looked like a bunch of leaves. His dad brought his guitar and a smile on his face because he was happy to be camping. It was funny when Henry and Mudge thought that there were bears so they were hugging each other. I thought it was a good book because in the end Mudge does something really funny but you have to read the book to find out what it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night
We have every one of the Henry and Mudge books and have been reading them to our daughter since she was two. She is four now and she still loves them. We would reccommend these books for both boys and girls. There is a Henry and Mudge book for every occassion. Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night is perfect to prepare for a camping trip. The feeling of a campout comes through loud and clear and the story is delightful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night
In their 17th adventure together Henry & Mudge go camping with Henry's parent. Out at Big Bear Lake they take A Good Smelly Hike & have some sweet Green Dreams. While Henry's mother organizes the trip because she's been a Camp Fire Girl & Henry's dad brings along his guitar & a willing back, Henry and Mudge imagine what they'll see on their camping trip. Ah, here comes summer - let's go camping together! Great early reader. () ... Read more

Editorial Review

Since 1965, the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) has been teaching its students how to climb, kayak, and navigate; how to camp without leaving a trace; how to stay warm and dry in the wilderness; how to cope with a backcountry emergency; and how to effectively lead others through such experiences. There are many reasons for spending time in the remote outdoors. Awe-inspiring scenery, peacefulness, wildlife viewing, and exercise are all good reasons. Another is that such experiences build character: "The wildlands teach us to be smart, practical, resourceful, and observant. To hike ten hours through scabrous terrain, cross a brawny river, stay warm in a snowstorm, and navigate your way out of tangled woods tests and builds your best faculties." While no single book can prepare one for spending time in the wilderness--much less impart all the skills necessary to survive in the elements--the NOLS Guide is an eminently useful place to start. Chapters include primers on equipment (fitting boots and packs, choosing a tent, the "Five Commandments for Equipment Care"); appropriate dress for a variety of climates; and ways of traveling in the backcountry, from crossing scree fields to fording rivers. It's not a substitute for in-depth instruction in, say, snow camping, or reading a map and compass. But with a solid grounding in the basics, one can take that first boot-step into what Joseph Wood Krutch called "the great reservoir of energy, of confidence, of endless hope." ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for this kind of camping
This book isn't for someone who wants to learn to be attuned to nature, or be able to flow with nature. I recommend Tom Brown Jr.'s books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!
A very good coverage of a large variety of topics. Learned a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for serious outdoor adventure
I read the book in preparation for a mountaineering course - it's great - informative, well written, a good balance of solid content and easy readability. He would be a great person to go up a mountain with - but the book is a little easier to fit in the backpack!

An absolute must for anyone who camps in the non-RV sense of the word. ... Read more

Ernest Thompson Seton, the author of Wild Animals I Have Known and dozens of other books and pamphlets celebrating the American wilderness, had any number of strong opinions. For one thing, he believed that a civilization whose members were physically weak was doomed to collapse. For another thing, he exalted American Indians as people who shunned avarice, "sought for the beautiful in everything," and lived in harmony with nature. And for another thing, he believed that to try at something and to fail at it was infinitely better than not trying at all--and that no one was quite so distasteful as a quitter.

Seton's Big Book of Country Living, originally published in 1912 as The Book of Woodcraft and reissued in several increasingly larger editions, gives full vent to these views. Like the Boy Scout Fieldbook it inspired--and Seton was a founder and Chief Scout of the Boy Scouts of America--his overstuffed manual abounds with practical instructions on camping, nature study, map reading, knot making, and other outdoors skills. These instructions are delivered with a refreshing certitude: Seton concludes his step-by-step guidelines on making a fire by using rubbing sticks, for instance, with the words, "If the fire does not come, it is because you have not followed these instructions." They also disguise an overarching purpose, which is precisely that outdoor activities should be undertaken with some mission, whether to determine whether a certain type of tree grows in a particular area or to prove that a certain road goes north to south. Activity without learning, in Seton's universe, is a wasted enterprise.

Seton's book also contains a vigorous, constant defense of American Indian ways of life--an unusual stance, given that the violent conquest of North America was still fresh in his peers' memories. "As the model for outdoor life in this country I took the Indian," Seton writes, "and have thus been obliged to defend him against the calumnies of those who coveted his possessions." At once a historical document that provides a window on Seton's time and a still highly useful manual of outdoor skills, The Big Book of Country Living belongs in every outdoor enthusiast's library. --Gregory McNamee ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An awesome reprint!
This book has LOTS of interesting information for the beginning and experienced camper. My 7 year old son and I enjoyed reading through sections of the book.

For those interested in Native Americans, the story of "The Ending of Dull Knife's Band" is a phenomenal account of a historical event that rarely makes the history books. I would encourage interested readers to read this section alone.

happy reading! :-)

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting old book
This is a reprint of a book printed in the early 1900's by Ernest Thompson Seton. Seton had founded a youth group called "Woodcraft Indians". He later incorporated his ideas into the Boy Scouts of America.

This is not the type of book you sit and read from front to back. It is great to thumb through and see how things were done at that time. This was originally aimed at young boys from 11 years old and up. There is a lot of good information about campcraft, games and stories, in the book.

Along with this book, you should do some research online about the badge requirements for the Woodcraft Indians. It is very intriguing to find out what early scouts were required to do.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book for those that wish to know how it was done!
Ernest Seton has written a wonderful text to get lost in. The book could serve so many different people, from the young boy wanting to know the ways of the wild to the senior citizen who either wishes to broaden their knowledge of the forest. It would be a wonderful book to those people that wish to become 'instant experts' on surviving in the forest. The topics are broad: from how to identify trees to how to skin and tan different animals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Books!
Best books on the planet if you are going camping! I spent 2 1/2 months on the road through 48 states and I would have never been able to do it without them (this one and his western edition). A must have for the low-budget traveler who wants a surefire way to find a campsite when you need one. Excellent directions and although some of the descriptions are a bit misleading, it is very easy to see where they came from. Warning: Some of the campsites are no longer usable! We found a couple that have been flooded or overrun with cows (yes, cows). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It captures the beauty of the river and draws you there.
The illistration of this book is as good as it gets. The artwork is detailed and life like. I found not only did it draw my eye to it, but my 4 and 7 yr olds as well. The story is simple, but wonderful. It draws you to the place it describes. I was competely taken by it's illistration. It is about a grandfather who takes his grandsons on a trip to find where the river beings. What I also found about this book, is that although it has fairly simple words, it threw in some ones that are proably new to children of this age. It gave me an opportunity to teach new words like "meandnered lazily". I enjoyed the book as much as my children did and I am ready to find more books by this wonderful author and illistrator. I give it my highest rating! ... Read more
