Product Description
The Little Clay Cart(Mrcchakatika) may have been written by King Shudraka although nothing is known about him. This play has been translated from the original Sanskrit and Prakrits by Arthur Ryder."ACT I., entitled The Gems are left Behind. Evening of the first day.--After the prologue, Charudatta, who is within his house, converses with his friend Maitreya, and deplores his poverty. While they are speaking, Vasantasena appears in the street outside. She is pursued by the courtier and Sansthanaka; the latter makes her degrading offers of his love, which she indignantly rejects. Charudatta sends Maitreya from the house to offer sacrifice, and through the open door Vasantasena slips unobserved into the house. Maitreya returns after an altercation with Sansthanaka, and recognizes Vasantasena. Vasantasena leaves a casket of gems in the house for safe keeping and returns to her home." ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars An idea book, not a how-to.
This book may give you some ideas to think about, but it is not complete enough on any topic to be called a how-to. I have a hobby that has turned into a small business, and I am glad I did not read this book first; because I think it would scare anyone from starting a business. This book can be used to make a helpful list of things to do for the crafter who is taking the next step from selling at local school and church shows to larger and more expensive venues. ... Product Description

In recent years, the integrity of food production and distribution has become an issue of wide social concern. The media frequently report on cases of food contamination as well as on the risks of hormones and cloning. Journalists, documentary filmmakers, and activists have had their say, but until now a survey of the latest research on the history of the modern food-provisioning system—the network that connects farms and fields to supermarkets and the dining table—has been unavailable. In Food Chains, Warren Belasco and Roger Horowitz present a collection of fascinating case studies that reveal the historical underpinnings and institutional arrangements that compose this system.

The dozen essays in Food Chains range widely in subject, from the pig, poultry, and seafood industries to the origins of the shopping cart. The book examines what it took to put ice in nineteenth-century refrigerators, why Soviet citizens could buy ice cream whenever they wanted, what made Mexican food popular in France, and why Americans turned to commercial pet food in place of table scraps for their dogs and cats. Food Chains goes behind the grocery shelves, explaining why Americans in the early twentieth century preferred to buy bread rather than make it and how Southerners learned to like self-serve shopping. Taken together, these essays demonstrate the value of a historical perspective on the modern food-provisioning system.

Product Description

The "Little Clay Cart" is, for Sanskrit theatre, atypically romantic, funny, and thrilling. This most human of Sanskrit plays is Shakespearian in its skilful drawing of characters and in the plot's direct clarity. One of the earliest Sanskrit dramas, "Little Clay Cart" was created in South India, perhaps in the seventh century CE. Set in the city of Ujjain, so secular and universal is the story that it can be situated in any society, and it has, including in Bollywood film and by the BBC. Charu*datta, a bankrupt married merchant, is extramaritally involved with a wealthy courtesan, Vasánta*sena. The king's vile brother-in-law, unable to win Vasánta*sena's love, strangles her, and accuses Charu*datta. The court decides the case hastily, condemning Charu*datta to death. Fortunately, our heroine rises from the dead to save her beloved, and all applaud their love. At this climax, the regime changes, and the rebel-turned-king makes Charu*datta lord of an adjacent city.

Product Description
Welcome back to Deep Valley!

Winona Root is almost eight years old. More than anything in the world, she wants a pony for her birthday. She wishes so hard for a pony that she's sure to get one--at least, that's what she tells her friends Betsy, Tacy, and Tib. It's only when the exciting day grows near that Winona begins to wonder: What if her father meant it when he said she couldn't have a pony?

In addition to her beloved Betsy-Tacy books, Maud Hart Lovelace wrote three more stories set in the fictional town of Deep Valley: Winona's Pony Cart, Carney's House Party and Emily of Deep Valley. Longtime fans and new readers alike will be delighted to find the Deep Valley books available again for the first time in many years.

Not up to the standard of the Betsy and Tacy series, but it does allow one more visit to Deep Valley for those who long to go there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another welcome trip to Deep Valley, MN
Thank goodness Harper has brought this Maud Hart Lovelace gem back into print! This book offers a glimpse of Betsy Ray's friend Winona Root at age7, planning her 8th birthday party.Winona is such an outgoing girl thatthe guest list just keeps growing, and there is much merriment involved. Adult readers will be delighted to discover Winona at an early age, and Iam reading this new editon aloud to my three year old niece who keepsbegging for another look at all the Vera Neville illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice look at another B-T character
After many years, I finally tracked down a library copy of "Winona's Pony Cart," and I am glad to have read it.It's a nice look at Winona's home life at the age of 8, when the "main" charactershaven't really encountered Winona yet. What a riot of a character she is! I've always liked hercharacter in the rest of the series, so I was happyto get a peek into her life, meeting her sisters and parents. And shereally is kind of a funny character, all on her own.I hope this bookcomes back into print eventually, I would buy several copies!

5-0 out of 5 stars This goes for all the "Betsy" books
When Maud Hart Lovelace first wrote the "Betsy-Tacy" series, did she know how much so many people, from children to adults, would love them? The series has at least one book that anyone of any age can relate to.10-year-olds will love "Over the big Hill," high-schoolers willlove the books about when Betsy was attending Deep Valley High, etc. And itdoesn't end there! Even if you're not the age that Betsy was in one of thebooks, you can still love all of them! Maud has a way of capturing realfeelings and experiences--even bad ones--and turning them into works ofart. The "Betsy-Tacy" series really is a work of art, even if itwas painted with a pen, and not a paintbrush.

5-0 out of 5 stars One more Lovelace book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Drive Down Memory Lane... in An Indy Car !
For those outside the loop of racing, NASCAR garners a great deal of attention.Lost in all the attention paid to that series is a great style of racing collectively known as "open wheel" or "Champ Car."The CART / Indy Car series has evolved over the years but one thing has always remained. The races are fast, exciting and very competitive. How exciting?Put 800+ horsepower in a 1,600lb car that stands at knee level and enjoy the fun!If you are a fan - new or old - this series from Autocourse is a must-have.Specifically, this edition is a must-have at all costs.

Everything is covered: The formation of the organization into a great racing series. The major names and personalities of the sport. The technological advancements over the years. The champion drivers, cars and engines.

There are timelines which give even greater historical perspective. There are complete results for all races and drivers for 20 years. The photography is fantastic and brings back a lot of memories for someone who's watched these races over the years. All the most memorable moments are covered in detail.

3-0 out of 5 stars GOOD OVERALL PICTURE
THis book is often very superficial. It focus most in photos, but it reachs its goal, which is to give s a general picture for CART's first 20 years. It has the place-listings of every year from 1979 to 1998, but ithas very few statistical data apart from that. I think it could have lessphotos and more data.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Compared to the typical Autocourse title, this is a disappointing book. Some excellent photos is the only highpoint.

Based on previous Autocourse titles, I expected a chronological approach to the subject with detailedrace by race statistics and some technical discussion. Instead, the bookcovers the history of CART themematically with the bare minimum of driverstats and superficial technology comment.

This book could have been somuch more; but instead, it is a trivial recount of CART's history. Verydisappointing. Not in the same class as other Autocourse titles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Autocourse again produces a winner!
For its entire history the CART series has been the primary focus of my keen interest in motorsports. With super-fast high-tech cars competing on a wide variety of oval tracks, road and street courses, this series has noequal. In true Autocourse style this book is an excellent way to eitherlearn all about the formation and evolution of CART and/or bring back a lotof great racing memories. The text and photography are all superb! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Old(er) Golf Writers Like This Book!
It has been taught to us that psychiatrists, bartenders, and cab drivers are the three
occupations that understand the most about human behavior; we can now add a fourth --
beverage cart girl.'Secrets of a Tee Time Girl: Golfers, Scandals and the
Beverage Cart' is Nicole Kallis' softcover composition describing human and
inhumane behavior on the golf course. It is the "book of revelations" encompassing
conversations and actions by golfers when they hail down the beverage cart.Kallis' spicy, witty
style proves that she is a scribe from Venus who writes quite comfortably and naturally, as if she
has visited Mars.Readers may well want to apply sunscreen (SPF100?) before
cracking open Nicole's book -- it's HOT!Golfers and non-golfers, alike, will enjoy the book.
The author is a real beverage cart girl in warm, sunny San Diego and writes of her golf course
escapes in a genuinely easy going and conversational manner, and a visit to her own web site
will give readers a glimpse at some, mmmmm, well, torrid photos; check them out for yourself at

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Human Being
As of yet, I have not read Art Honeyman,s book 'Sam and His Cart,' but just puchased it here. It was written the same year my daughter was born -1977. I met Art when we both lived Berkeley, CA. I did see one of his plays he wrote and starred, and, have read some of his outspoken poetry!
Today I saw the movie 'Music Within' (thanks to Netfix) about a Vietnam vet, Richard Pimentel, who comes home from the war deaf. After some not so great experiences, he goes to work toward obtaining rights for vets AND other people with disabilities, which eventually lead to 504 law. And Art and Richard being great friends!
Is this review misplaced? Should it be with the movie? Oh, well!

1-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Important and Touching
This book is very important to teachers and parents alike in social responsibility to helping all children come to understand handicaps (and the lack there of)in any "disability". Sam and his Cart has an important message to send children; that we should appreciate and nuture differences in one another and help each other understand our selves and our fears. Please read this to your children. It is fantastic

5-0 out of 5 stars My Uncle Arthur
I am a bais relative of Arthur, he is my Mothers brother.I first read Sam and his cart over 20 years ago, and have read most of his other publications since. My first reading of "Sam" was rather unsettling, how could my Grandfather let my Mothers brother sell lightbulbs door to door in that condition? Why did he let him do that, and expose him to such possible humilation, and rejection?

My Uncle Arthur is a man that I do not know enough about or get to see enough, however 50 years after this story transpired, he still writes novels, lives by himself, takes care of himself even though physically confined, and is a true inspiration to the rest of his Honeyman Troups!

This book should be read by all children, it provides an excellent insight to the differences of humans and their condition's.Not everyone is the same, but we all feel the same things.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sam And His Cart - Revisited
Sam and His Cart w/audio cassette was a project collaborated by Arthur Honeyman and Sam Gholson. Aurthur wrote the story about his experiences of growing up with Cerebal Palsey. And Sam Gholson, a close friend of Mr. Honeyman, produced, narrated and composed the music for the audio cassette.

The story is about a young child named Sam who has cerebal palsey. Who goes through life dealing with his questions, why is he different from other children as well as being afraid of those of who don't know how to deal with him and the questions of other children who are naturally curious about Sam. Part of the soundtrack includes the voices of children asking Sam questions. Which I think adds a nice touch to the story. If you are interested in getting this book - get the book with the audio cassette. It breaths life into the story. A great story for children... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful little case study of an upstate New York county
The book begins by placing Allegany County (New York) in context, going back to the role of the glaciers in literally shaping the land, the geography of the area, vegetation, streams and rivers, nature of the land and soil, and so on. All these have had some role to play in the evolution of the county (e.g., quality of soil was better in the valleys; even there, though, soil quality overall was not as good as in counties to the north).

To illustrate the book's approach, let us take a look at one of the historical periods covered. From 1810-1855, the land was settled, trees cut, and farming began. It took a long time to clear land (backbreaking work and primitive tools). Land speculation was a part of the equation, with landowners and early settlers interacting in sometimes dicey ways. Standard of life was pretty difficult out on farms, especially those on marginal land. Farm homes were pretty basic structures, without much in the way of amenities. Local villages helped provide needed goods and services (e.g., blacksmithing) to farmers, and relationships developed. Among the intriguing features here: the role of elevation in farming (higher elevations had shorter growing seasons and made it harder to move any surplus products).

This case study does a nice job with the one county selected. It also provides a sense of the regional context. As transportation developed (whether the Erie Canal, railroads, or automobiles) cities such as Buffalo or Rochester became accessible. Over time, this had implications for the well-being of towns and villages in the county. One needs the regional perspective to understand the local dynamics. All in all, a worthwhile volume.

These carts feature visions of the saints, Charlemagne, operatic scenes, and the histories of Napoleon, Columbus, Cortez, and even Mussolini. The authors examine the history, culture and use of these carts, as well as the generations of artisans who decorated them. Product Description
A rare bone cancer robbed Jarrett Mynear of a normal childhood when he was two years old, but it didn't steal his spirit. The Joy Cart is the story of how an extraordinary boy captivated crowds with his courage, faith and humor in the face of adversity. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, Jarrett got busy. By delivering thousands of toys to sick children, this pint-sized Santa Claus traveled a path that led to national television appearances, prestigious awards and a chance meeting with the President of the United States. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Sad but Uplifting Story, Well-told
It can't be easy for an adult to write the true story of a youngster. Even if that youngster has achieved some manner of celebrity status, it must pose special problems for an older generation to write accurately and insightfully about its focus. And if that celebrity status has resulted from that youngster's caring humanity and unselfish acts in the midst of an ongoing life-threatening disease, writing the story must prove all the more difficult. Yet author Marvin Bartlett, anchor for the Bluegrass Region's Fox affiliate, has successfully overcome those difficulties in telling the story of Jarrett Mynear, an extraordinary young Kentuckian who, when faced with a disease that would eventually steal him from all those who loved him, chose to better the emotional and mental well-being of others who suffered like himself. Bartlett knows the story is so strong and moving that editorial commentary from himself is minimalized, and he maintains his discipline even in the secondary matters. For example, when campground owners hosting a group of children, all of whom are seriously ill, deny them the fun of shooting at each other in a squirt gun battle because these owners abhor war and violence, Bartlett merely reports the fact, confident that his readers will shake their heads. This is the story of a remarkable boy, and reading it, I suspect, will bring some relief to those distressed, and joy to all. Despite the sadness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jarrett is an inspiration for all to read about!
Marvin Bartlett invites the reader to the world of an incredible child. If only we would have an ounce of Jarrett's heart the world would be a better place! While it is sad that Jarrett has gone to a better place he left us a legacy of giving and this book is his record. It gives the reader a glimpse into the mind of a child that battled daily with his demons but acted like an Angel!
