5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cheerleading Book!!
I recently began coaching cheerleading.I had been a cheerleader in middle school and high school, but that was years and years ago.I wanted to refresh my memory of all the things I learned back then, as well as catch up on all the new stuff, and this book really helped.A great tool!I'm glad I decided on this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars It sure pleased my 13 year old cheerleader
My daughter has been cheering since 3rd grade in the town cheerleading squad. She does not do competition cheerleading. She also now cheers for the Junior High she attends.I picked up the book as a present for Christmas and she loves it.I don't know how it would be for anyone else, but she thinks it's great. There are a lot of illustrations in it and she is looking forward to maybe incorporating some of the ideas in her High School squad next year.It was reasonable priced compared to some of the cheerleading products out there like the CD's and video sets.Hope this helps.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for all cheerleaders/coaches
As a high school cheerleader, I can say that "The Ultimate Guide to Cheerleading" is one of the most updated books available on cheerleading today, unlike most books published in the 80's that have all of those illegal stunts and outdated cheers. However, this is definitely a good book for cheerleaders, which includes

- Steps to starting a team for coaches who are interested in doing so (i.e.: setting up tryouts, enforcing goal setting for your team, judging criteria for tryouts, etc.)

-Tryout info and advice, along with a section to help you decide if you truly want to be a cheerleader.

- Basic motions, cheers, and chants

- Jumps (the great thing is that this book covers all 8 of basic counts for jumps and fully illustrates them with photos)

- Stunting (the most comprehensive stunting section I have EVER seen in a book... starting off with single base, then moving on to multiple base, basket tosses, and pyramids)

- Competition cheerleading

The only minor thing I don't like is that there really isn't anything about tumbling, and as another reviewer mentioned before, the book skips a few basic stunts, and moves straight to more advanced ones that wouldn't be suggested for beginners. However, if you are on an advanced squad, you will probably appreciate all the ideas for more difficult stunts, because they're all covered. But overall, this is a good book for all cheerleaders and covers (almost) everything you should/need to know. It's definitely the most comprehensive up-to-date book on cheerleading today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Stunting
This book is great! It shows in detail on stunting and pyramids. I'm a new coach for an all star team and I've been hunting for a book like this. It also has great ideas for cheers, training tips, and sample forms. I wish it would have went into more detail on tumbling but overall a must have for any cheerleader or coach!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fabulous resource for beginner to advanced coaches!
Leslie's 'Ultimate Guide to Cheerleading: For Cheerleaders and Coaches' is a fabulous resource for beginner to advanced coaches! I found it very helpful, and I have been coaching for several years, all levels. The illustrations make it a "hands-on" learning experience for those who are visual learners, great for beginners! I found it especially unique that she demonstrates the techniques and skills herself in the photos, not many writers can provide their own illustrations, and done perfectly. I found it very useful, thumbs up. Thank you for sharing your passion and knowledge with us. Can't wait for the next project Leslie! Way to go!

3-0 out of 5 stars for american coaches only
I couldn't find much help from this book. However, I'm Swedish and how to start a program here is really different from in the USA. The stunting section was very short. The illustrations to the dancemovements were adequate but sometimes not enough descriptive. There are other books out that will tell you the same things, and more. I recommend "the ultimate guide to cheerleading" by leslie something.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for a first-time coach, but
A must-have for all coaches. There are a fair variety of motions and jumps depicted, but they are drawings rather than photographs. Also, there is no visual depiction of how to prep for a jump, and this book starts you off with a thigh stand instead of stag stunts but there are stunt variations here not shown in "The Offical Cheerleaders Handbook" or "The Ultimate Guide to Cheerleading" and the photographs lead you pretty much through the whole sequence.

Also in its favor it does have great tips on:

*forming a team

*keeping on top of your legal responsibilities

*developing a practice plan

*reaching out to parents and the community

*building up your members' self-esteem

*evaluating and tweaking your program

My advice is to buy this book in conjunction with the other two mentioned above to get the most knowledge of cheerleading basics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coaching Cheerleading Successfully
I recommend this book to anyone interested in coaching or advising cheer. One of the best purchases I have ever made, and I bought one for my entire coaching staff. I also run a training website and discussion group and constantly urge my visitors and participants to buy this great resource for coaches of today. A true cheerleading must-have!

4-0 out of 5 stars This is perfect for beginners as well as long time coaches!
I enjoyed this book!I use it with every turn in cheerleading coaching.I have been coaching for the last 11 years and this is one of the best resources that I have come across.I use this for both my All Star Team as well as my Varsity High School Team. This is perfect for the coach or advisor, however I would not suggest this book be viewed by the cheerleaders. This would confused them more than what they are already when any season starts.Coaches get your hands on this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars An AWESOME book for new coaches
A very informative book for new coaches or as a refresher for more established coaches. Covers alot of organizational information regarding cheerleading practices, try-outs and how-to's for starting a new program. Ialso used this book to inform parents and school board officials onestablishing a school program. No coach should be without this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for any first time coach, or long time coach that needs improvement.
I am a first time coach, and this book has been a true gift for me! Every idea is wonderful and the printable forms have been so helpful. I wish I could say more, but I have 19 girls waiting for me to begin practice right now. A practice that will be organized, consistent and well worth their time thanks to Pam's book.

Sincerely,
A Cheerleading Coach from Washington State

4-0 out of 5 stars Straight to the Top
This book is a completely comprehensive look at coaching a cheersquad. It is not specific to the United States, so most of the suggestions, strategies and helpful hits can be used in countries outside of there (for me specifically Australia). Just starting a squad is must less daunting with the assistance of this text, as it clearly lays out an idiot-proof way to work through each step. Thanks heaps!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mothers - your cheerleading children need this!
My friend and her daughter live and breathe cheerleading. I had no idea just how important conditioning was for cheerleaders. After reading Rik's book, they have a much better understanding of strength and how to properly perform the exercises. They are grateful that I thought of them when I saw Rik's book and gave them a copy. I am receiving physical therapy for my shoulder and feel badly when I see teenage girls receiving therapy because of a cheerleading injury. I hope other mothers will get this book for their cheerleader children.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding hands on reference book!
A back handspring is one of the keys to making any cheer squad and as a parent of several daughters, I can't begin to tell you how important making the squad is to each of them. Reading Rik's book on "Cheerleading: Conditioning for Back Handspring & Tumbling Success!" really opened my eyes regarding how much conditioning plays a critical role in safety and success in tumbling. Every parent of a cheerleader or a young athlete trying out for the squad should get a copy of this book. Combined with Rik's other book, "Back Handsprings: The Secret Techniques," any cheerleader would gain a tremendous advantage during tryouts and throughout the season. ... Read more

Book Description
Cheerleading has come a long way since its beginnings at a Minnesota football game in 1888. Then, all you had to do was stand and yell; today, cheerleading is one of the nation’s most popular pastimes (over 80 percent of US high schools have cheerleading squads), a challenging physical activity whose participants train at different levels on teams and camps year-round, and a competitive sport covered by ESPN. Cheerleading is the first and only book on the market that goes inside the sport itself, to tell cheerleaders (and aspiring ones) what they really need to know: How do I get started? What kind of camp should I choose? What do I need to do to make a varsity, college, or All-Star team? What are the new trends, techniques, and stunts? Written by the editors of Inside Cheerleading magazine, this book gives cheerleaders, coaches, and even mascots the inside edge not only on techniques and choreography, but also on competitions, types of squads, style and attitude. The book features contributions from inspiring role models, including Lawrence Herkimer, the father of modern cheerleading, Sarah McDaniel, three-time national champion cheerleader, and Ryan Martin, a current high-school cheerleader and star of the Lifetime reality show, “Cheerleader Nation.” ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent cheerleading book!
This book shows motions, jumps, and cool cheer routines. This book is a great supplement to any cheerleaders library of cheerleading books.

This book also comes with pom pons, so you can practice using pom pons when cheering.

5-0 out of 5 stars great beginner to intermediate book
This book was a great reference for my daughters who are interested in trying out for cheerleading. The week long cheerleading try-out camp at school is pretty intense and with this book at least they will be able to learn some basics.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Boring Cheerleading Book
I have been cheerleading for several years and just starting coaching. Being a first time coach I figured that this book would have given me new ideas and reminded me of things that I forgot, but I learned nothing from this tiny book. When I say tiny, I mean 119 small pages of just space being taken up by really boring material. If you already know the basic motions, don't buy it. If you done a couple chants before, these chants are just unoriginal and just not exciting. We are cheerleaders! We're not suppose to put people to sleep. They give you examples of some cheers with motions, but its so boring. The jumps that they show you in here, you could figure out for yourself. BUT if you are a beginner and you want to know how to do some stuff, go for it, but don't try out with this material. You'll put the coaches and the team to sleep. This is no good. Anybody could have whipped this book together in an hour. Lame, lame, lame. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars out dated
this book may be a help to you if you have never, and I mean never, had anything to do with cheerleading. It is terribly outdated for the modern, athletic cheerleader, particularly in the area of stunts.A great stunt in this book is a tree, or those old pyramids where everyone got on someone's back. However, if you are looking for nostalgia in the old rah, rah type cheering....this may be the book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars For the new cheerleader and coach
This one was written before most current cheerleaders were born, and the pyramid section is woefully out of date with its 3 &1/2highs, but the key ingredients on cheering how-to are all still relevant, both physically and spirit-wise.It is still, in my estimation, the best book for a beginning cheerleader to have because it has:

*Stretches which are still helpful.

*A tremendous variety of jump examples, more-so than any other book I have seen, including the C/window, & stag. Also starts with the tuck as the most basic jump rather than the toe touch.Unfortunately, it doesn't really show you the approach and landing techinques.

*More variations of arm and hand positions than any other book I've seen.

*Great pictures of what not to do when hitting motions. (Broken wrists, fly-away arms, uneven shoulders)

*Simple, basic partner stunts best suited for beginner cheerleaders who need to learn the step-lock method (at a supervised practice, of course.) Pony mount, Knee/Standing tabletop, Side sit, 'Bama sit, single based thigh stand variations, victory mount, star, flying angel, and stag catch. Their tallest stunt is a shoulder stand. No prep level or higher stunts are taught in this book, but there are pictures of some taller pyramids, a few of which are still legal.

*Good sample dance 8 counts, though a bit out of date for the Hip-hop age.But perfect if you have a marching band.

*Small section on basic tumbling, but smartly suggests that cheerleaders seek out qualified instructors to learn from.

*Several pages of cheers and chants: basic spirit, football, basketball, and wrestling

My advice? Beginning cheerleaders need this book.Intermediate and advanced cheerleaders might find it useful only if they want to consider finding ways to update some old school moves and look a little different from everyone else who attended summer camp with them.

My idea of an excellent cheering how-to library consists of this book, plus "The Ultimate Guide to Cheerleading" and "Coaching Cheerleading Successfully".

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Cheerleading!!
What a great book! I'm a cheerleader and a gymnast, and I've found it to be a fantastic resource! This book is perfect for all levels of cheerleading, whether you're a Pop Warner cheerleader or a Varsity cheerleader. It has tons of hints, tips, and instructions. There are thousands of photos. In here, there are jumps, cheers, chants, gymnastics, routines, stunts, pyramids, tryout tips, and sooo much more! This book has helped me become a much better cheerleader and I've appreciated everything I learned from it. This book deserves three cheers!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for today's cheerleader
This book, while helpful in some ways, is not ideal for today's more active and athletic Varsity or All-Star cheerleader. I would definitely reccommend this book for less competitive squads, like Pop Warner or J.V. Beginning cheerleaders and new coaches may find this book useful. But personally, with five years experience, I didn't learn too much from it. Instructional videos or competitions on ESPN will benefit competitive cheerleaders more. The tumbling section has detailed pictures of performing a back handspring, and some of the spirit/fundraising ideas are good. The stunting pictures are very outdated, and could use some updating. There are very few free-standing stunts, basically everything is old-fashioned pyramids. The basic stunts they show are pretty innovative, and would be good for Pop Warner cheerleaders. If they revamped this portion of the book, I would give it a higher rating. GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY CHEERLEADING!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!! I loved it alot!!
This book shows you step-by-step ways to perform incredible stunts such as pyramids. Being a Varsity Cheerleader this was a great book for reference. It was very helpful. Thanks to this book we put on a good performence and really pepped up our players and had a year full of tons of victorys! Read it! It's incredible!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It was O.K.
I found this book at my local public library. Since I do cheerleading, I thought it would be a valuable resource, and it sort of was. It was a little too short, and I knew most of the moves and stunts in here anyway. It did have color photos and stuff, but it was only about fifty-eight pages. I wish it was longer. I guess it's mostly for beginners or people who want to learn about cheerleading or are thinking of trying out, because there is a section about it in here. I would recommend this book to beginning cheerleaders or for people who want to find out more about this cheerleading.

4-0 out of 5 stars For Beginning Cheerleaders
This is a good book for cheerleaders that are new or girls that want to try out. Most of the moves and stunts in it were pretty simple, so beginners could get more out of it. I am almost in middle school and I want to try out for cheerleading, and this book is a great source, especially when me, my sister, and my next-door-neighbor make up cool cheerleading routines together. I just wish it had more jumps, stunts, and a instructional section about gymnastics, 'cause I'm a intermediate gymnast. Don't bother reading it if you're an advanced cheerleader, but it's a great book for beginners.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ooh! What a waste!
I checked this book out at the library. It's okay if you're six to eleven years old, but it won't do any good for anyone older than that.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it if you're a pro!
Believe me when I say this: This is a book for the beginners all the way. I bought this book thinking I could learn something that wasn't obvious, but if you cheerlead already, there is nothing new that you can learn from this book. It should be called Ultimate Beginning Cheerleaders. BUT if you're a real beginner and you need some sort of practice with boring basics, then buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful book
