SPORT IN THE OLDEN TIME

By Sir Walter Gilbey, Bart.

Originally published in London 1912, this rare early work on cockfighting is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition.

READ COUNTRY BOOKS have republished it using the original text and artwork, in a high quality, affordable, modern edition.

The author was a well known sportsman, equestrian expert and farmer, who wrote many books on these and other related subjects.

No pastime has ever held in England the position which was held for centuries by cockfighting. It was, to quote the title of an old treatise, "the pleasure of Princes." It was practised by the highest of nobility and by the humblest peasant. Love of "cocking" permeated society from top to bottom.

This well researched book on Cockfighting has 129 pages and contains detailed information on:- Early Cockfighting. – History. – Various Kinds of Mains. – Artificial Spurs. – Training. – Game Fowl Breeding. – Fighting Rules. – Famous Cockers. – Superstitions. – Cock-Pits. – Feeding. – Illegal Cockfighting. – etc. It also contains interesting full page illustrations of Game Fowl and cockfighting equipment.

This is a fascinating read for any Game Fowl enthusiast or historian of this now illegal "sport."

Many of the earliest sportingbooks, particularly those dating back to the 1800s,are now extremely scarce and very expensive. READ COUNTRY BOOKS are republishingthese classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK PETA hippys stop using this as your cry forum
This book is great. It is not illegal. It is not garbage.Cockfighting is not illegal in every state. And lastly people breed game cocks and show them who dont fight them.

AMAZON I AM A CUSTOMER AND THANK YOU FOR HAVING THESE BOOKS.

PETA and the nazis both would have you get rid of books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read, Informative, deep subject matter
Interesting book on what has recently become such a trendy topic of outrage.Cockfighting is illegal in my state and I have no intention of violating that law.Nonetheless, I am glad that in this nation, founded on freedom, particularly of information and knowledge (the only way a democracy can function), I was able to read about the subject to satisfy my curiosity about the outrage towards the sport.

It occurs to me that most reviewers here have probably little to no firsthand knowledge of much that occurs with our domesticated animals, be they for meat or dairy or laying...they certainly display a close-minded and hysterical attitude in their reviews towards 'cruelty' that is obviously mired in ignorance.

I wish that before screaming their self-aggrandizing, high-handed moral biases...people would at the least read the book.Anyways, bravo to anyone who doesn't bow and scrape to would-be moral tyrants who scream on the 'innanets' (that's humorous irony in itself, I think).

Once again: interesting read on what is obviously very deep subject matter. ... Read more

VARIOUS INJURIES DESCRIBED AND NURSING EXPLAINED.

NATURAL ABILITY OF HANDLER EXPLAINED AS HELPFUL TO SUCCESSFUL COCKER.

MANY PRECAUTIONS FOR SUCCESSFUL WINNING OF BATTLES ADVISED.

By A.C. Dingwall, Ph.B.

Although many "Cocking" titles are available to today’s Gamefowl breeders and fanciers, very little has been written on the actual handling of fighting cocks in the pit.

The author, with his many years of practical experience, wrote this book to enable his fellow cockers take care of their birds more intelligently during and after battle. It was the first in-depth book ever published on the subject.

This unique historical record, published in Chicago in 1928 is extremely scarce and costly in its first edition.

READ COUNTRY BOOKShas now re-published it, incorporating the original text and explanatory photographs, as part of their HISTORY OF COCKFIGHTING series. Its 78 pages contain the following detailed chapters:-Handling Preliminary to Battle. – Qualifications of a Handler. – Precautions in Handling. – Nursing for Couples. – Nursing for Rattle. – Neck Blows. – Fatigue and Exhaustion. – Blind or Blinked. – Runaways. – Broken Wings and Legs. – Throat Cut. – Brain Blows. – Random Pointers. – Worthwhile Reminders. etc.

The publishers have also included the original blank battle record pages bound into the rear of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
We have here an invaluable resource for the care of game cocks. It offers a lot of that advice that you are otherwise only likely to get from the old timers in the sport. The concerns raised by other reviewers (whom I bet haven't even READ this book!) that the sale of this book constitutes some kind of cruelty are misplaced.Hundreds of cookbooks exist wherein ingredients can only be got through the slaughter of chickens.Does that constitute condoning animal cruelty as well?At least game cocks die honorably and in accordance with their nature, in stead of being mechanically "turned off" in a factory. If they were people, game cocks would go to Valhalla.

1-0 out of 5 stars Shame on Amazon
I thought you might be interested in this Humane Society US campaign to stop Amazon.com's sales of illegal animal fighting materials. Amazon
sells both cockfighting magazines and bloody, graphic
dogfighting DVDs. The company is so determined to continue
selling these materials that it filed a motion against The HSUS
in federal court, essentially asking that federal and state laws
to protect animals be gutted to accommodate Amazon's sales of
animal fighting paraphernalia!

Please ask Amazon to remove these materials from its website.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get a life
I get so tired of reading these reviews from people who have no idea what the sport is about. It is not illegal in every country. In most asian country is is part of the culture. Most people have probalby not been to a true breeding farm where the cocks are treated better than most house pets. If you want to talk about wrong it is go to a chicken plant and see how they kill and process chickens. You have no problem eating at KFC do you think these chickens are hatched coated in batter? If this is not for you fine then dont read it but dont make comments about things you know nothing about.
