Product Description
The Brothers: In a land torn apart by civil war, Bolaris was fiercely loyal to the Strong Men. So when Number Four informed him that Ratzel, leader of the enemy, had been captured, it was naturally a cause for celebration - that was until Bolaris actually met his great opponent... The likeness between Bolaris and Ratzel was so remarkable that Bolaris was left in no doubt that they were related - brothers, or perhaps even twins. As sworn enemies, and now as his captor, Bolaris had to work out a way to discover the truth of his identity - and do so without sacrificing his loyalty. The Croquet Player: Georgie was a very sensitive man, what some would, and did, call a sissy. Of course Georgie would never dream of blaming his somewhat effeminate nature on the over-possessive and overbearing aunt who brought him up - although others weren't quite so reticent with their opinions. Georgie had one reason at least to thank his aunt - she had led him into the career he so shone at. It didn't matter to Georgie that playing croquet wasn't exactly the most glamorous thing he could do, because it was on the croquet lawn that he met some of the most intriguing people. ... Product Description
Excerpt:
The increasing popularity of Croquet, and the deficiencies of the existing manuals of the game, have encouraged me to give this little book to the public. The treatise of Captain Mayne Reid, to which the introduction of croquet in this country is mainly due, is deficient in system and arrangement, and affords no intelligible determination to many of the cases I have instanced in illustration of the rules of the game. The manuals published in this country are still more faulty. The rules afford no solution to half of the ambiguous cases that arise in ordinary play; and some are guilty of the strange error of allowing the "Roquet Croquet" to every ball--a liberty totally at variance with the fundamental principles of the game, and which in the hands of strong players would prolong the contest indefinitely, make victory depend upon a single chance hit, and reduce the opportunities for generalship and combination to a minimum. I have dwelt at some length upon the "right of declining," and the "theory of double points;" principles which, though hinted at by Captain Reid, are left rather obscure in his book. Players will find that this power of economizing privileges adds greatly to the interest of the game, and renders many a cunning plot and counter-plot necessary. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Croquet Game
This entertaining novel lets you learn all about the intricate and newly popular British version of the game enjoyed in countless American back yards, while it also explores the dangerous world of dot.com deals gone bad amid the opulence and decay of 1999. I liked George, the anti-hero venture capitalist and philanderer better than his competition, a guy who plays croquet and loves George's wife more than he does, but could easily understand why she takes up the sport. An exercise in merciless strategy mixed with traditional values, it produces winners of much more than money, and leads her to a logical and satisfying conclusion.
The author's command of style and language is impeccable, and results in a story that is not only literate, romantic, and informative, but also an enjoyable, good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun on the Lawn

Excerpt: The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), also known as the All-England Club, based at Wimbledon, London, England, is a private members club. It is best known as the venue for the Wimbledon Championships, the only Grand Slam tennis event still held on grass. Initially an amateur event that occupied club members and their friends for a few days each summer, the championships have become far more prominent than the club itself. However, it still operates as a members tennis club, with many courts in use all year round. The Club has 375 full members, about 100 temporary playing members, and a number of honorary members, including past Wimbledon singles champions and people who have rendered distinguished service to the game. In order to become a full or temporary member, an applicant must obtain letters of support from four existing full members, two of whom must have known the applicant for at least three years. The name is then be added to the Candidates' List. Honorary Members are elected from time to time by the club's Committee. Membership carries with it the right to purchase two tickets for each day of the Wimbledon Championships. The patron of the club is Queen Elizabeth II, and the President is H.R.H. 5-0 out of 5 stars Quite simply, one of the greatest books ever written
H.G. Wells was one of those writers who could only be counted as too good for the Nobel Prize, just like James Joyce or Tolstoy or Proust. In 'The Croquet Player' he has not only produced his best book but one of thegreatest books ever written.

I would rather not reveal details of thestory. It will suffice to say that it concerns the origins of human nature,or rather, of human brutality, selfishness, greed. (In fact, I could hardlyreveal any details of the story, since the last chapter negates the entirebook!)

What tells it apart from so many treatises on human nature and theorigins of evil is that it is narrated by an altogether down-to-earthbloke, the eponimous croquet player, which gives it an even sharper feelingof reality and foreboding. Nothing wrong or criminal actually happens inthe croquet player's world, so to speak. And in the story he is told, thecontours of evil are elusive: a dog beaten to death; a drunked parsonbeating up his wife; that dreadful fear and paranoia in a land that neverwas. That is what makes it ultimately so compelling. So mind-changing as'Catcher in the rye'. So disquieting.

Jorge Luis Borges, the greatest ofArgentinian writers, once made a list of the greatest books ever. In it heincluded 'The Croquet Player', for reasons that you will find obvious onceyou read it. As all masterpieces, exactly why is it so good is not entirelyexplainable. Be warned, though: this book leaves a disquiet behind that canlast for days, weeks, even months. Do not read it if you like your booksharmless and cosy. Do not read it unless you are unable to agree withBorges: 'in here he [Wells] describes a degenerating society that could beLondon or Buenos Aires and the guilty ones, my friend, are you and I.' ...
