The Croquet Game
This entertaining novel lets you learn all about the intricate and newly popular British version of the game enjoyed in countless American back yards, while it also explores the dangerous world of dot.com deals gone bad amid the opulence and decay of 1999. I liked George, the anti-hero venture capitalist and philanderer better than his competition, a guy who plays croquet and loves George's wife more than he does, but could easily understand why she takes up the sport. An exercise in merciless strategy mixed with traditional values, it produces winners of much more than money, and leads her to a logical and satisfying conclusion.
The author's command of style and language is impeccable, and results in a story that is not only literate, romantic, and informative, but also an enjoyable, good read.
