Book Description
With the Winter 2006 Olympics bringing Canada our first gold medal in curling, the sport's popularity is at an all-time high in this country, and its international presence is growing. In the five years since the publication of the first edition of Curling For Dummies, Canadian attendance at curling tournaments and viewership of televised curling has skyrocketed. Twenty new nations have joined the World Curling Federation.

Curling’s profile isn't the only thing that's changed since the first edition was published — so too have the game's rules, equipment, and technique. Profiles of players, listings of television coverage and events, and memorable curling shots also need to be updated for the second edition. As the most comprehensive and up-to-date book available, Curling For Dummies will remain the ultimate curling book, for fans, players, and coaches. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for new and experienced curlers
I picked up curling just after the 2006 Olympics. This book does a pretty good job covering all the aspects of curling, from scoring, sweeping, delivery, and more. This book won't replace a lesson from an experienced curler, but its certainly a good reference once you've gotten out on the ice. This book has the Triangle Curling Club Seal of Approval, if there is such a thing :)

5-0 out of 5 stars any new curler should read this book
As a new curler, this book was a perfect companion to actually playing. It had everything you need to learn the sport. A must read if you want to curl.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jessica's Review
This book really helped me out.I was doing a research project on Curling and it really came in handy. It had all the information in it that I needed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful to a dummy like me
I had no idea about the sport whatsoever but having read the book I feel like a professional (even though I have not tried playing it yet!). The book is well-organized, very informative and fun to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing 'Dumb' about it!
The book is great as a stand alone, or as a backup for those of us who have embarked on our curling careers already, and need a little extra help remembering all the phrases, shots, rules, etc.
It also gives some background and history on alot of the aspects of curling, which help you better understand the sport as a whole.Anyone who thinks curling is easy needs to sit down and read the book and sign up for a class. There's nothing 'easy' or 'dumb' about it, but you will meet alot of very interesting people and gain a new respect for the people who have been doing this their entire lives. ... Book Description
In The Roaring Game: A Sweeping Saga of Curling, bestselling journalist and amateur curler Doug Clark takes the reader on a fascinating behind-the-scenes journey all the way from the sports humble beginnings in sixteenth-century Scotland, to the first international bonspiel played in Buffalo, New York, in 1865 (a match between Canadian won), to where the sport is today. It is estimated there are more than 1.2 million curlers worldwide. While as many as 90 per cent are registered in Canada with its 1,100 clubs, the United States boasts as many as 13,000 curlers in 135 clubs-including a club in sun-drenched Arizona! Hurry! Hard! is even shouted in Cameroon. The fact is, anyone with a pulse can curl. From age nine to ninety, male or female, tall or short, players of all races and abilities enjoy the infections camaraderie of the sport. But its not all about the socializing. Curling is a complex and maddeningly difficult game to perfect, and the competition can be ruthless. Its not surprising that competitive curling attracts larger and larger crowds every year. Curling became a full-medal Olympic sport in the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan, where the Canadian mens team won silver and the womens team took home gold. Curling has officially entered the realm of elite sport, making heroes of its stars, like Mike Harris, Sandra Schmirler, George Karrys, Colleen Jones, Brad Gushue, and Glenn Howard. Curling has come a long way. Just ask Clarence Shorty Jenkins, a.k.a. The King of Swing. It was his innovations that helped revolutionize the game. In his words, A curling rock is smarter than a human being. ... Read more

Book Description
“And again, I had to pinch myself. Could this all really be happening? Was it possible that I was now a gold medal winner at fifty?

“I had won many championships, world and Canadian championships, Ontario and New Brunswick championships. I had won hundreds of bonspiels and cashed scores of first-place cheques. I have a basement full of trophies and medals, but nothing could compare to the moment I was experiencing now; nothing could ever match the newest reward that was hanging from my neck.”

 From Hurry Hard, Chapter 1

It was a long journey for Russ Howard from his childhood in small-town Ontario to the pinnacle of the Olympic podium in Turin at the 2006 Winter Games. Worlds apart, separated by thousands of kilometers and over four decades, but joined by one remarkable curling career.

A career that started on a quiet, lonely rink in Midland, Ontario. Howard, coached by his father, developed a solid, consistent delivery at an early age. He loved practicing, where other youngsters loathed it, and for hour after lonely hour he honed his skills by throwing rock after rock on the rink at the Midland Curling Club. A natural skip from a young age, Howard was always drawn in by the strategy of the game. He relished the responsibility of throwing the last rock. For him, it was always exciting and thrilling to control the final shot of the game, where others were fearful or nervous. And for over three decades, it has been exciting and thrilling to watch him.

With award-winning journalist Bob Weeks, Russ Howard takes us on his personal journey through forty years of playing the game he loves: championships won and lost, the characters in the game, ever-changing teams and teammates, personal triumph and heartbreak, and an inside view of the curling world from one of the greatest in the sport. ...
