3-0 out of 5 stars Pluses and Minuses!
I bought this book for my 15 year old nephew who just bought his first used (and pretty beaten up) Laser.I'm probably guilty of making him do so: I have sailed Lasers for the past 20 years and let my nephew out on his own on mine for the last couple of years, ever since he was heavy enough to get it upright again after capsizing...

As so many books of this kind, it is trying to serve everyone's needs. But that's really impossible to do.While many things discussed are excellent for the beginner, many times the language used makes only sense if you have been sailing for quite some time. The book puts a lot of emphasis on racing the boat, yet for the new Laser owner this may be in the more distant future. The book probably makes the most sense for a somewhat experienced sailor who decides to buy a Laser and plans on racing it.A young sailor will frequently struggle with the technical terms. And there is not that much more an experienced sailor couldn't learn on his or her own.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading it and even after all the years sailing this fun boat, I found a few new things. And my nephew may not get everything on first try, but after some research it will make more sense.I have no regrets that I bought it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing Critical Information
This is a good book if you're looking for information on technique and tactics. However, I found the section on how to rig the Laser to be extremely lacking. The book uses a large amount of jargon or technical terms that are not clearly explained, and talks about various knots without actually showing how to tie them. For example, it says to "make a handle" with a piece of rope, and then has a picture of a neat little rope handle. How to make such a handle is not explained anywhere. This book is fine for beginners who don't need to rig their own boats or intermediates who want to better their technique (particularly how to trim the sail). However, it's not very useful for someone like me who already knows basic techniques, but isn't great with rigging and knots.

With a name like "The Laser Book", you would expect it to be a comprehensive book that covers everything you need to know about how to get a Laser going.Unfortunately, without a better rigging section and guide to the knots mentioned, you'll be stuck on land.

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpfull
This book brings all you need to know, be you a beginner or a competant. If you want to buy something that covers all itens of a Laser sailboat (from rigging and go fast techniques) and can really helps, this is the one. The Laser Book will be a friend for a long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great starter book!
I'm new to sailing, and learning on a used Laser. This is the book I should have bought first! There's a lot of beginner content, and a lot of stuff for me to work up to.This book will help take you from zero to competant.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Laser Book
A great collection of rigging and go fast techniques on one of the most popular one design sailboats in the last 35 years.Ther are 190,000 lasers sailing today and the numbers will continue to climb! This book is worth having even if you pull only one skill from the pages, it may help you get to the weather mark 1st!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dinghy Sailing ...An ultimate adventure
Wonderfully written and illustrated, and this book should enlighten everyone that has ever sailed or wanted to sail a small sailboat into a wonderful and exciting world of boating of a different kind....especially women.A great way to explore, meet new friends, have great adventures, and enjoy small boat sailing at it's best. Our wonderful coastlines, lakes, bay, rivers, and waterways are waiting for the dinghy sailors to show that BIG is not always best! Plus you can go many places where others cannot. Almost any small sailboat can be adapted for some type of extended cruising whether for an overnighter or a month long adventure afloat! This I know for a fact because I've done this myself many times being raised on the coast and have a love for sailing. My adventures are called Backpacking on Water! RWF

5-0 out of 5 stars Small on size but big on information
What is a great little book! The author has spent an extensive amount of time touring various the world in what is by today's standards a tiny little boat. In the manner of a field guide she makes a great number of sensible suggestions for the best ways to camp, sail, prepare, provision and generally live in a 16 footer. It's a lovely book to dip in and out of- I've had it in my briefcase for the last three weeks and find myself often reading a chapter over coffee. Well written and thoughtfully put together, it's a triumph for minimalism in these overly 'geared up' times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dinghy Cruising - Big Adventure, Small Price
Dinghy Cruising is a great book. The book gives ideas on how to select a dinghy (small open sailboat) and rig it for cruising. The book goes into basics of boat selection, boat tents, camping gear, seamanship andselecting where to cruise.

It opens up new vistas for small sailboatowners. According to Margaret Dye (and a BUNCH of enthusiasts at the DinghyCruising Association and the Open Boat discussion group) - you don't need alarge self-contained expensive sailboat to cruise. You can explore in asmall open sailboat of 12 to 18 feet or so. You can sleep on thefloorboards under a boom tent in your little boat, or camp ashore. You caneven cook in a little boat.

After reading the book and getting a fewideas, I am planning on extending the range of sailing opportunities bytaking overnight and weekend trips in my little (15'6") sailboat. Asdinghys are small and light, you can trailer them to your favorite lake, coast or river - and do some great exploring.

I'll be exploring theGeorgia lakes. Hope to see you there! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good basic info
This is a rather simple book regarding the venerable Mirror sailing dinghy. There doesn't seem to be many books concerning the Mirror, probably because the boat is past it's prime. If you buy a Mirror, this would be a good little book to own. A good alternate title might be, "Sailing The Mirror, For Dummy's." ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Vagabond is a 3.7m fibreglass sailing dinghy is sailed in Australia and, to a lesser extent, in North America.
