4-0 out of 5 stars Racing the Iditarod
I follow the Iditarod and live in Alaska. I found the information in this book to be factual. I would recommend this book for older students needing to write a report. It would be a good reference. It is also a good sourceof general information on the Iditarod, that is enhanced with coloredphotographs. One area I especially liked was concerning the role of LeonardSeppala and his dog Togo in the diptheria serum relay to Nome. The WarnerBrothers cartoon movie about Balto, has given children a somewhat erroneousidea of who the real hero was in this serum run and the true details of allthat went on. Someone wanting to write an authoritive research report onthis subject should definitely want to have the correct information thatthis book contains. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the best ever
evrey thing was right it got me $999,999,999,.99!

5-0 out of 5 stars Information I can use !
This book is crafty and must be read with a clear head. I recommend it to anyone; gambler or not . I contains a slice of something about living in America. Rarely will we find these types of books in the future. I suggest sportsmen and sports-ladies take a copy and preserve it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This book was exactly what I needed to round out my education on Greyhound racing. The first few chapters cover the basics -- how racing works, whatto expect, and how the percentages pay.It is fairly elementary forsomeone who has been at the track a few times but there were a fewlingering questions I had that this book answered.

The crux of the bookis McBride's system for long-term profit making at the track. From hisnumbers, one would guess it would work.In short, his strategy is to takea months' races and categorize them.By doing an analysis on the postposition, early leader, class changes, late speed and maneuvering ability, one can see which patterns becoming more distinct.Knowing that earlyspeed racers, for instance, do well at a particular track would be adefinite advantage. Each track has its own advantages anddisadvantages.

I noted some of the mistakes that I was making and some ofthe knowledge I had picked up the hard way (by losing). However, McBride'ssystem doesn't really appear to be for the casual gamer. It appears itwould take at least an hour before a race to score a guide and justgenerating the 30 races worth of data could be time consuming (at least anhour or two an evening). The math behind the grading process is verysimple and could easily be done by a computer program. Also, McBride'ssystem is not for the "cheap" gambler. He advocates betting a 4or 5 (around $12 - $24 a race) box trifecta for maximum winnings.Hisexperience and samples indicate this is the highest pay off percentage.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is an excellent read for players of all levels.
I read the Book by Mr. McBride and I must tell those out there who have the chance to get a hold of a copy of this fine book to do so. The book pretty much entails all the knowledge you need whether you are a novice, oran expert player or handicapper. If you have played the greyhounds for along time, it will aid you in polishing up your skills in the racing game.Overall, this is an excellent book and value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent all-around handicapping book
This book covers 98% of all you need to know about the races, handicapping, betting, and scoring dog races.Probably the best value in greyhound racing books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was full of interesting & great information on Greys
I am a first time Greyhound adopter and I'm so glad this is one of the books that was a pre-adoption requirement. I enjoy how Cynthia is so in tune with these wonderful dogs and she gives you the info directly from her heart! They said any book by Cynthia Branigan is worth purchasing, so I'm going to buy her other book on Greyhounds next.

5-0 out of 5 stars A helpful hand
This book was such a help as the breed was new to me. I knew nothing about the personality of the breed or what to expect. This book will help any one interested in adopting a Grey through the first months and the life of the pet. The medical information is invaluble as these are things some vets don't know let alone the pet owner. The book not only assists you in knowing the breed before you bring one home, but can greatly assist you in deciding if this is the right pet for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adopting the Racing Greyhound
this book is a must if you are planning to adopt a greyhound for a companion...great information to help you make the right decision to see if a greyhound is the right "new family member" for you and your family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Great book -- if I only had one book on the subject, this would be it.

The narrative style made the book enjoyable for me to read (yet difficult to skim). The book offered me plenty of practical advice and opinion based on the author's experience.

The "dummies book" is has better illustrations, but this book wins-out for its consistent organization and easy readability.(I've also reviewed the Dummies book on Amazon in more detail: 3 of 5 stars).

5-0 out of 5 stars Greyhounds

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I'm so surprised nobody has reviewed this wonderful book yet! I guess it's up to me.

First, this book is easy to read and comprehend, which is good because there is lots of useful information to remember. There is nothing in this book that is not covered. It even has a section about the tick diseases greyhounds can have because at the tracks, the dogs are not given any sort of flea/tick control.

This book does not take sides in the greyhound racing debate. Instead it gives truthful, unbiased information all about greyhounds! If you are seriously interested in adopting a retired racing greyhound, this is the book for you. It has lots of gorgeous photographs and short, fun stories about adopted greyhounds. It is very well organized and it is easy to find what you are looking for.

I really like Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cynthia A. Branigan also, but if I had to pick between the two I would pick this one simply because the information is just as good plus you get color photographs and shiny pages. Whee! Also, it is a hardcover book and in my opinion that is a plus.

This book is perfect and lovely. I highly recommend it to any greyhound fan!

5-0 out of 5 stars would by author again
I bought this book for my husband, who is not a reader but he has been reading this.I was shocked because other than a newspaper or the mail I have never seen this man read anything. We have been married for over 22 years. So,I guess he must like it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Experienced at reading the racing form
I think this book is for a weekend trip to the dog track, maybe even a week in advance. That is the sort of book it was.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Handicapping Start
Prof. Jones steps through the basics of handicapping greyhounds in this book. His method handicaps by calculating the following variables:Effective Grade (determined by assigning scores to the WPS results over the dog's last 12 races), Current Form, Speed, Run Style (Inside, Outside preference in relation to post position) and Kennel (looks at all Kennel's WPS results...top kennels make sure their dogs are ready to race). These variables are then weighted with Effective Grade receiving about 50% of the weight.Based upon the total, bet determinations are made. This approach is good for the higher classes, but will not help you much in the lower classes or Maiden races (which he states). The chapter on betting strategies is rather short.Beyond WPS, Jones covers Trifecta Keys and Wheels and when to use those betting strategies.
Overall, this is a good intro to handicapping. The one tip I picked up about betting a favorite to show/place and the second highest rated dog to win, in certain situations, has paid for the book many times over.Good handicapping!

4-0 out of 5 stars Prof. Jones a must read for serious handicappers
Prof. Jones book is a great basis book to use for handicapping. It willhelp you develop you system, and gives honest, sound advice. (there isanother review of a different book under this book I also reviewed, sorryfor the mixup)

4-0 out of 5 stars All around great handicapping book
This book gives pretty good insight and suggestions on handicapping, and the techniques work well with the higher grades. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Racer Dogs
Cars and Dogs -- for a boy, how can you go wrong?Very cute, clever rhymes, detailed silly illustrations with puns for the adults scattered throughout the background.Keeps me and my 5 year old son in stitches. The characters are very cute also. The race is just for fun and there is so much to look at along the way, the dogs get all distracted while they're driving. You could read this again and again!

My four year old son's favorite book. There are lots of words and many detailed pictures and phrases to keep your little one interested. I love the way it comes to a soothing ending as all the dogs go to sleep at the end...perfect for a bedtime story. You won't be dissapointed with this purchase!
