Product Description
This book takes you behind the scenes with the group of Chrysler engineers who, from the 1950s through the 1970s, became one of the most successful and influential drag racing teams of all time. The only team of engineers from an automobile manufacturer to drag race successfully, the Ramchargers broke the most time barriers in drag racing history and earned the most National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Super Stock titles during the sport's golden era of factory competition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars they where more than the ramchargers.
as a young boy growing up in australia any information about drag racing was like a bible.i was able read drag world, drag news and national dragster that came to the speed shop.i always looked forward to reading and learn what i could about the ramchargers.with this book i am able to read their story, plus fill in all the gaps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Very well written. The author is actually one of the Ramchargers.I've recommended this to every car crazy friend and MoPar fan I know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fact is fact, honest reports from the men who were there...
This book was an absolute dream to read, i felt as if I were a fly on the wall, Dave Rockwell did a fantastic job researching and putting it all on paper.Forget any attitudes, showboating, etc...these guys were the real deal, family men who wanted to get the power to the ground and make it work for them.Honestly, I get the feeling that I missed out being born late, but this book takes me back.a must have for any MOPAR enthusiast !!! 5 stars !!! you'll have hard time putting it down !

5-0 out of 5 stars We are the Ramchargers
This book offered me a facinating insight into the development of Mopar's factory-based superstock, factory experimental, funny car and top fuel efforts through the eyes and ears of the factory engineers and their peers who made up the legendary Ramchargers Drag Racing Team. What I found especially interesting was how influential these dedicated and loyal Mopar engineers were in both changing the internal thinking of Chrysler's "old-guard"(from developing oversize performance luxury cars to the development of youth-oriented, no-frills, total-performance vehicles), and the external promotion and technical sharing of performance products and techniques in bringing both Dodge and Plymouth to the forefront of the muscle car and initial factory super stock era.

The major players and competitors are all there, from the unbeatable Garlits, to the Mopar factory drivers like Sox, Landy, etc., to the competition like Nicholson, Jenkins, etc.

If you like the era, the cars, the drivers and the competition both on and off the track, you will enjoy this well written book!

5-0 out of 5 stars We Were The Ramchargers
Overall I thought the book informative and entertaining. Others have properly noted some grammatical errors, notably the Homophone errors, e.g. Bonsai as opposed to Banzai, but in all honesty, theses distractions are minor, if a bit disconcerting.

The book illuminated many of the aspects of Chrysler's racing effort and how it manifested itself within the corporate structure. I knew of the Ramchargers, although I never saw them run personally.

When I started drag racing, around 1972, I was inspired by teams such as Sox & Martin, Dick Landy, Herb McCandless and the like. I hadn't realized how much the Ramchargers had contributed to their efforts. I've always been more inclined to Stock/Super Stock/Modified Production/Pro Stock rather than to Rails and Funny cars, although the latter were enjoyable to watch.

These cars (S/SS/MP/Pro Stock) were based on real cars that the public could actually buy (granted, much modified) whereas today's Pro-Stocks are little more than stylized Funny Cars on Gasoline. Today's Funny Cars bear hardly any resemblance to real cars and I submit that a person would be terribly hard-pressed to identify what 'brand' of car they were watching if unpainted with corporate logos.I digress here, my apologies.

I do wish that the Ramchargers (Chrysler) would have devoted more time and research to the MoPar Small block and Big-Blocks as those were really the backbone of the typical racer. I wouldn't argue that the Hemi had the most potential, but a lot was "left on the table" regarding the wedge engines. I think that corporately, the decision was made to focus on the Hemi in the classical engineering waterfall requirements methodology, and in that vein, the Hemi made the most sense. An excellent race engine, not so great on the street.

I would definitely recommend the book to any MoPar enthusiast, and even to owners of the competing brands.

It has been said that we stand on the shoulders of giants, and I believe that this book vividly represents that. It must have been personally difficult for them to accommodate their wishes to race and demands of their personal and professional lives to achieve what they did achieve.

Product Description

Factory Lightweights: Detroit's Drag Racing Specials of the '60s chronicles these rare cars that still inspire admirers and imitators today. Among racers it's never been a secret that a lighter car is a faster car--particularly in drag racing. When Detroit's automakers got involved in organized drag racing, they paid heed to this principle, issuing a series of rare race-only cars that became legends in their own time. Unbound by warranty and durability concerns, these wild cars featured lightweight additions such as fiberglass and aluminum body parts, Plexiglas windows and many more weight-saving tricks. Under their hoods were wicked, raucous engines that only felt at home on the quarter mile. Cars like the Ford Fairlane 427 Thunderbolt, Pontiac's Super Duty Catalina, Dyno Don Nicholson's Chevy II Wagon, and a whole assortment of Hemi-powered Mopars sit at the top of the heap when you're talking about the fastest American musclecars produced during the 1960s. Few of these cars were produced and very few still survive today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Factory Lightweighs; Detroit's Drag Racing Specials of the '60s
This book is a wealth of information for those who remember the days of drag racing super stocks and factory altered wheelbase cars that were lightened with "swiss cheese" frames and bare bones interiors. Prior to the one-piece bodys known as "floppers" this is what was a radical departure to what was driven on the street. Plenty of great archival pictures, this book is a must-have for anyone who atteneded the drags in the 60s.
