Product Description
The most exciting and unpredictable cars in drag racing just had to be the Fuel Altereds. These race cars were short wheelbase coupes and roadsters powered by the same high horsepower engines found in the Top Fuel Dragsters. That combination produced some wild, exciting and memorable racing. This book tells the story of the Fuel Altereds. It begins with the 1957 fuel ban when both nitro and alcohol were outlawed from drag racing. However, like Prohibition, the rule makers could not completely shut off the nitro. The rebirth of the Fuel Coupes and Roadsters in the early 1960s was the foundation of the Fuel Altered class.Much publicized performances by several Fuel Coupes and Roadsters quickly generated more competition and improved performances.By 1965 drag strips in Southern California were scheduling Fuel Altered Eliminator programs. The late 1960s were terrific for Fuel Altered racers and enthusiasts. There were numerous cars and lots of Fuel Altered Eliminator programs. Some racers went on national tours. It was wonderful but it only lasted for a few years. By the early 1970s the changes in drag racing resulted in the demise of the Fuel Altereds. This book tells about the rules changes, controversies, illegalities and perfomances that were the Fuel Altered story. Gone but not forgotten. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pictorial Drag Racing
I love this book and keep going back to it for the fantastic pictures! Well worth the price. A good coffee table book to impress your freinds with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best drag racing book ever
Fantastic book. Top quality photos with stories from people that were there, not people that are good at research. If you only own one vintage drag book, this is the one to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice history lesson
Very well-done book, great photos and info. I wish it had more stock and super stock coverage, but that's just me, and it doesn't take away from the book a bit. This is a neat book as a coffee table piece too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful look at roots of drag racing
If you like drag racing, this book is a "must have" for your coffee table. It traces drag racing history from its main origin after WW II, to the first funny cars, and rear-engined dragsters. The only regret I have is that the story doesn't go into the modern-day machines and stars.Nevertheless, if you want to know who drove this exciting sport to the level it is today, and who the icons of the sport were (and still should be), buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Colorful and Diverse

Product Description
The history of drag racing goes back more than half a century - and in those 50 years, there are a few people who have become drag racing heroes and maintained that status. One of those few is "Big Daddy" Don Garlits. But it isn't just his racing accomplishments that set Big Daddy apart. This is a man who truly loves drag racing, and on his own he has constructed one of the best motorsports museums in the world - The Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing, in Ocala, Florida.Garlits is one of the biggest record setters and innovators ever to blast the quarter mile, so who better to pick the cars that illustrate the sport's history? His museum contains hundreds of cars, but in this book, author Mike Mueller takes an in-depth look at the cream of the crop - the most significant cars in Big Daddy's museum, and probably the most significant cars in all of drag racing. From primitive machines like The Bug - so rough it'll tear your pants - to Garlits' own Swamp Rat 34 - a high-tech top fueler with thousands of horsepower on tap, and everything in between.Funny cars, Pro/Stocks, Fuel Coupes, roadsters, streamliners, Super Stocks, Gassers and more - this book covers them all, with spectacular color photos of the restored machines, right alongside vintage black-and-white images from Garlits' own collection.By the time you're done with this book, you'll understand not just the cars, but the history of drag racing and the life and times of one of its legendary figures - Don Garlits. It's a trip worth taking, one quarter-miler at a time. ... Read more

Product Description

When Mickey Thompson and his wife Trudy were assassinated in their driveway in the pre-dawn hours of March 16, 1988, the salacious details of the crime and the years of legal wrangling that followed made for hundreds of splashy headlines and sexy television soundbytes.

After all, the story had it all . . . unknown hooded gunmen riding into a gated Southern California community on bicycles, ambushing their victims and brutally ending their lives while neighbors ate breakfast and read the morning paper.

Leaving behind more than $70,000 in jewelry, the killing was an obvious “hit,” and those close to Mickey and Trudy immediately pointed to Mickey’s hot-headed former business partner Michael Goodwin as the mastermind behind the tragedy. Nearly 20 years later, Goodwin was found guilty by a Pasadena Superior Court jury in 2006 of two counts of first-degree murder. The actual gunmen were never identified or apprehended.

John Walsh and America’s Most Wanted did multiple episodes leading up to the conviction. Robert Stack featured the murders on Unsolved Mysteries. CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery got in the act. Everyone wanted a piece of the story.

A good story, however, has much more than a powerful ending.

Who was Mickey Thompson? What made him more than just another victim of violent crime in America? This is what Mickey Thompson: The Fast Life and Mysterious Death of a Racing Legend explores.

Mickey was one of the most influential figures in early American motorsports. While he did have loyal and longtime friends, Mickey always did things one way . . . his way. And he did it with speed . . . he did everything with speed.

From his 1950s adventures in the Carrera Panamericana, ending with five dead and dramatic pictures in Life Magazine in 1953, through making a one-way run of 406.60 miles per hour at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1960 in his famed Challenger, through multiple trend-setting entries in the famed Indianapolis 500 and into the creation of some of the most popular off-road racing series and motor sportsstadium shows, Mickey’s life was full of “firsts.”

And in a world that seems to be moving faster than even Mickey Thompson could have imagined, the complete story of this true American legend is one worth slowing down for.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Maniac on a Mission
I reviewed this book February 6, 2009, for my Media Matters column at Radioactive Drag Racing News. I opened,

"Spending a lifetime in the venture capital world is a lot like drag racing except our fuel is cash and our race cars are ideas seeking out the finish line. One entrepreneur I met really defined what it takes to succeed in starting a business around inspiration when he said, "Essentially, you need a maniac on a mission."

In other words, the individual has to be driven, incredibly focused, and on a straight line to accomplish their goal -- roadblocks and hindrances, and often times relationships, be damned. It kind of resembles the effort required to win championships on the drag racing circuit, doesn't it?

Of all the thrilling episodes recorded in Erik Arneson's fast-paced new book "Mickey Thompson: The Fast Life and Tragic Death of a Racing Legend," I couldn't help but be overwhelmed by the inventions, new ideas, and new ways of doing things this mechanical artist created through his sheer will and enormous drive.

That he didn't sleep for days at a time evidently was legend . . ."

Unsolved Mysteries reviewed his life on their program today hosted by Dennis Farina, which reminded me of the book and how his life's story impacted me. I can't put the whole review here (you're invited to read it by going to the online publication), but that this is a compelling life would be an understatement. Plus, Erik Arneson has the wherewithal to put the story together and the writing skills to involve the reader at a personal level with Mickey Thompson.

4-0 out of 5 stars Genuis car guy sruk down in his prime
The Mickster was one of those rare gems, a mechanical prodigy with a genius for promotion. He functioned on a higher level than most, and could multi-task several projects at a time on a few hours sleep. He was a true hot rodder, driven to compete and win, and to innovate on the fly. How much more could he have accomplished if he hadn't been senselessly killed by a greedy business partner? We'll never know. Gawd, I miss him.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mickey Deserves better
The first tipoff that this was not going to be a good read was the small size (6 by 9) and double spaced type. The author wastes a quarter of the book on a court case and then on Thompson's death and its aftermath. These were easy to research but of little interest to most readers. The pictures are all black and white and often unrelated to the text they appear with.

No topic is covered in enough detail to add to a casual fan's knowledge about Mickey's many projects. Example: The Mickey Thompson Equipment Company appears in chapter 4. The only information given is that it produces forged aluminum pistons. 9 years and 70 pages later it appears again when it is sold, complete with many product lines, to Colt Industries. The author provides no information about the products the company developed, the type of customers it served, etc.

Similarly, the author provides no information about what else was happening around Mickey's projects. Example: Mickey built rear engine cars for the 1962 Indy 500 using aluminum Buick V-8's. There is no discussion of the rear engine Cooper driven by Jack Brabham in the 1961 500 or the Lotus Fords driven by Clark and Gurney in 1963.

The minimum standard for books about motorsport is generally low but this book doesn't even meet that standard. If a book about a prominent politician, football player, or actor were written with this lack of depth it would never get published.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mickey Thompson The Fast Life . . .
Enjoyed this "quick" read as I knew one of the people in the book and I live in the OC/LA area.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mickey Thompson: A Life With The Throttle Wide Open
In the end it's not Mickey Thompson's death at the hands of a sociopathic former business partner, tragic though it was, that defines this remarkable man's life story -- it's what this diminutive son of a Los Angeles policeman did in the years alloted to him that defines him for posterity and makes him worth of our attention today.Possessed of restless energy, a love of speed, an intuitive engineering sense and a wild streak of creativity, Thompson crammed more into his five plus decades on earth than the vast majority of humans could were they given five times Thompson's life span.

And speaking of earth, for a time during the early '60s this Southern California hot-rodder was the fastest man on earth, covering a measured mile at better than 400 miles per hour behind the wheel of his monstrous four-engined Bonneville streamliner, Challenger I.He also set scores of international speed records aboard a series of smaller but no less innovative racing cars. And during most of the period when he was setting the racing world -- and occasionally himself -- on fire, Thompson was holding down a full-time job at night as a pressman in a newspaper plant. There are thousands of photographs of Mickey Thompson, and many wonderful ones in the book, but I'm not aware of a single one that shows him asleep.

Thompson's imagination turned, perhaps inevitably, to the Indy 500, and the cars he produced for that classic American motorsport spectacle were revolutionary. After helping to successfully introduce the modern rear-engine design to Indy in 1962, last-minute rule changes hobbled his later designs. But Thompson ranks, along with Daytona Beach's mad genius Smokey Yunick, as the most creative thinker at Indianapolis in the last 60 years.

They just don't make them like Mickey Thompson any more, and Erik Arneson'sbiography, which presents the whole character, warts and all, reminds us that we are poorer today for that fact. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Infomercial!
If you're looking for a general understanding of a cars cooling system, this is the book for you. If you are looking for any cutting edge information, or actually want to do any design work, this book is not for you. It is light in its technical information, and doesn't really give enough information to actually undertake a design project (you can always resort to trial and error, but you can do that without buying a book), and at best it merely points you in the right direction. Worst still, it seems to have been pretty much been sponsored by Evans Cooling, and spends more time extolling the virtues of their products than it does educating the reader. There aren't that many books about cooling systems out there, but this is by no means a bible. At best its a good introduction, a casual light read, at worst its academically dishonest, packaging an advertisement as technical material.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great insight to a common oversight
I Have rated this book with 5 stars. After reading it and highlighting Many sections of it, I am pleased to say I consider it a "must read". Anyone building any type of auto. project, be it a street rod, sports car, or race car, even a daily driver can learn some useful tips from this book. It is not to burdensome with the math, but explains the complete cooling system and each of its components in depth. This coming from a second generation race/sportscar builder.
