2-0 out of 5 stars Very Basic Info
If you have never herd of or been to a drag race this book is for you. Yes I takes you from when he first bought his car up to his present day situation. However the way he does it is to simplistic. One example is the finding of sponsors. Ike states that if you go get sponsors they will pay for your motor or graphics or maybe give you discounts on items you purchase from them. That's it! He doesn't go into detail about how to dress, handle your self, network to find sponsors, how to make a portfolio of your car and race track accomplishments. If it were that easy we would all have big name sponsors. Not worth the [...] bucks ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
CarTech s bestseller, Gasser Wars, has been re-released in a new softbound format at a reduced price.
In the late 1950s, thousands of street legal hot rods participated in organized drag races across the country they ran in three major classes: Gas, Modified Production, and Modified Sports. As the racers got more serious, these cars were street legal in appearance only. Yeah, they had headlights, taillights, and interiors, but they were full-on race cars, with huge blown Hemi engines, wide racing slicks, and raised front suspensions.
Racers soon discovered that small, lightweight cars were the fastest, and the classic Gasser was born. Fans swarmed to watch big-names like Stone, Woods & Cook, Ohio George Montgomery, Big John Mazmanian, and others. These were among the most popular and exciting racers of the era many of the top original cars have been restored and are now valuable museum pieces, and the Gasser look is popular again among hot rodders.
Author Larry Davis combined his own image archive with many rare, never-published images from racers, fans, and track photographers all over the country. He also did extensive research and interviews with former drag racers. The result is a comprehensive, entertaining, and nostalgic look at drag racing history. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great history of a great drag racing era
If you are a gasser fan, drag racing fan, or just a hot rod fan, this is a great book. Larry Davis obviously has a passion for this era of racing (see Super Stock and Quarter Mile Muscle), and his details are second to none.

4-0 out of 5 stars YIPPIE SKIPPY
This book is not the original size in inches, but my friend who received it as a gift can't put it down and we have had many conversations about racing on the strips of the day.Totally satisfied and recommend this volume. Not all photos, plenty of text and racing stats.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Larry Davis
It's a detailed, generously illustrated history of this period and these cars.Nice blend of technical information, anecdotes, and event results. ... Read more

Excerpt:The Wisconsin International Raceway (WIR) is a stockcar racing oval and drag strip in Kaukauna, Wisconsin, USA. The main track is a half mile D-shaped paved oval. Inside the half mile track is a quarter mile paved conventional oval. The half mile track was added around the existing quarter mile in 1969. The corners for the quarter mile track double as the corners for a Figure 8 track. There are six divisions at the track. The Super Late Model and Limited Late Model divisions race on the half mile track. The Super Stock, Wisconsin Sport Trucks, and Sport 4's (stock four cylinder) divisions race on the quarter mile track. The Figure 8 cars end programs on the Figure 8 track. A automated timing and scoring system was set up for the 2007 season, and each racecar carries a transponder. The Fox River Racing Club began helping promote the weekly events in 1975. The track had an annual American Speed Association event. The track resumed hosting ASA events after the series was reorganized, and it held an event in 2007. The track has hosted an annual "Red, White, and Blue State Championship Series" for super late models since 1972. The series consist of three races in June (red), July (white), and August (blue). The series changed from Saturday nights to combine with the weekly series in 2009. The series was part of the Midwest Challenge Series (formerly ARTGO). The blue race is now part of the Wisconsin Challenge Series. 7,832 people watched Dick Trickle win the first red race. All of the following drivers ap...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4677020 ... This is my innocent and humorous recollection of the disasters and successes I have encountered in the male dominated sport of Drag Racing, when it was in it's infancy, back in the 1970's in the UK. I became only the second woman in the UK to race a Top Fuel dragster. How I survived a 200mph crash and came back to win the European Championship two years in a row. Yes, I beat the men at their own game! ... Read more

Excerpt: Auto Club Speedway (formerly California Speedway) is a two-mile (3 km), low-banked, D-shaped oval superspeedway in Fontana, California, similar to its "sister track" Michigan International Speedway. The Auto Club Speedway is the only track owned by International Speedway Corporation to have naming rights sold. The track is located on the site of the former Kaiser Steel mill. It is a relatively new race track, opening in early 1997, and has additional configurations and facilities to accommodate road races, motorcycle races, vehicle testing, and drag races (Auto Club Dragway). The racetrack is near the former locations of Ontario Motor Speedway and Riverside International Raceway. After Riverside's closure in 1988, Southern California did not host a NASCAR race until California Speedway was opened. In addition to NASCAR, the raceway has also hosted open-wheel events from both CART and the Indy Racing League. Main Grandstand at Auto Club SpeedwayLike many modern oval tracks, Auto Club Speedway also features an infield road course, which has been used by the Grand American Road Racing Association and by the Japanese Grand Touring Car Championship, with the JGTC race being unique as a night race. The Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series no longer races at Auto Club Speedway. The NASCAR West Series held its first race on the infield course, won by Jason Bowles. During the 1999 Marlboro 500 CART race, Canadian driver Greg Moore was killed in a crash along the backstretch of the track. It was determined that after sliding along the infield grass, Moore's car hit the edge of oncoming pavement, which caused the car to flip into a concrete retaining wall. This incident resulted in a major overhaul of the track, including the paving of the infield grass on ... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=641044 ... Read more

Product Description

This book showcases photographically the wide variety of cars and drivers that fit into the exhibition theme: the jets, wheelstanders, rockets and other exhibition vehicles which have thrilled millions of spectators. Their entire basis was who had the fastest vehicle. But in 1959 complaints from other competitors and Detroit automakers got all aircraft-powered dragsters banned, so they became the sideshow attached to the legitimate circus that is drag racing. The Green Monster became the first exhibition car exceeding 200 mph everywhere it ran. Wanting even more, Walt Arfons debuted the first jet-powered dragster which became the desire of every fan and promoter throughout the country. At virtually the same instant, Tom Ivo had Kent Fuller build a four-engine dragster and although it was too heavy to be competitive, the tire-smoke show became arguably the most famous exhibition car in history. See Bill “Maverick” Golden and the Little Red Wagon, “Wild Bill” Shrewsberry’s and the Hurst Hemi Under Glass, LA Dart and Knott’s Berry Wagon, Chuck Poole and his Chuckwagon, Doug Rose and The Green Mamba, plus many more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Drag Racing Exibition Attractions
This is a great book for the nostalgia drag racing fan. It contains many photos of the different exibition cars of the 60s' and 70s'. a great find if you remember these cars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Drags X
Some of the best photos of the sideshow of drag racing. Little known cars and drivers, who did not get a lot of ink, because they entertained fans at a lot of small, out of the way tracks all over the USA and Canada. Great showman all around. Lou Hart has done a wonderful job with a fun(but deadly)part of drag racing.A must buy for drag fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hot Rods to Hell
This is an "Oldie but a Badie" and that's good. Shows how far we've come when it comes to car chase movies. Not very far plot or story wise, except for CGI in todays flicks. The over acting is monumental, with only a couple of exceptions, but the hot rods are great fun to watch. The oil burning Corvette needed a ring job, but I guess it wasn't in the budget. I almost had to laugh out loud when Dana Andrew would bend over in pain (with his back injury) at the signal from the director saying action: "OK and the PAIN hits you "NOW"! Dana's daughter is cute, but so naive, it's hard to believe at least one guy didn't hit on her before running into these hot rod punks. Ah, restless youth. I remember when I was young and now I have a bad back. The movie is entertainment, so watch it as that. Too critical an eye will ruin it for you. I've seen it many times including on AMC TV, but had to have my own copy. This should be a cult classic like other B movies have become. How Dana Andrews kept from slapping his wife, played by Jeanne Crain, whilf filming this, is beyond me. Scheesch, calm down lady. Over all just fun campy stuff, like the good old days at the drive in. Grab a box of popcorn and enjoy.DeleteReplyForwardMove... ... Read more

Excerpt: Portland International Raceway (PIR) is located in Portland, Oregon, USA's, Delta Park complex on the former site of Vanport, just south of the Columbia River. It is west of a light rail station and less than a mile west of Interstate 5. The track hosts ICSCC and SCCA and OMRRA road racing, the NASCAR Camping World West Series, and SCCA autocross events. The facility includes a drag strip and a motocross track. Map of Portland International RacewayThe road course is almost perfectly flat and runs clockwise. Two track configurations are possible. One includes a hard chicane at the end of the front straight and involves twelve turns at length of 1.967 miles (3.17 km). Without the chicane, the track has nine turns and a lap length of 1.915 miles (3.08 km). The City of Portland is working to establish the track as carbon neutral. PIR is built on the former location of Vanport, Oregon, which was destroyed on Memorial Day, May 30th, 1948, when a dike on the Columbia River broke and flooded the city. After the flood had wiped out the city of Vanport, all that remained were the paved streets and concrete foundations of the destroyed homes and buildings. The first races took place on these old city streets in 1961 during the Portland Rose Festival. Since then, the Rose Cup has become an annual event. Racing at "West Delta Park", as PIR was known back then, was quite dangerous. Racers leaving the track unexpectedly could collide with leftover concrete foundations or fall into ponds. Excerpt: Gateway International Raceway is a race track in Madison, Illinois, USA, just minutes from Downtown St. Louis, Missouri. It hosts a NASCAR Nationwide Series event and a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race on a 1.25 mile (2 kilometer) oval, a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) infield Road Course used by SCCA and various car clubs, and also has a quarter-mile drag strip that hosts an annual National Hot Rod Association event. The facilities are owned by Dover Motorsports, a group that also owns Memphis Motorsports Park, Dover International Speedway and the Nashville Superspeedway among others. The first major event held at the facility was a CART series held on Saturday May 24, 1997, the day before the Indy Racing League's Indianapolis 500. Rather than scheduling a race directly opposite the Indy 500 (as they had done in 1996 with the U.S. 500), CART scheduled Gateway the day before to serve as their Memorial Day weekend open-wheel alternative without direct conflict. After a couple years, track management grew increasingly dissatisfied with its apparent use, as seen by some, as a political pawn or statement by CART and IRL/USAC and its poor attendance as fans generally chose to travel to the Indy 500 for the weekend instead. For 2000, the race was moved to the fall. In 2001, its was dropped from the CART series schedule, and switched alliances to the Indy Racing League. After mediocre attendance, the event was dropped altogether after 2003. The 1.25-mile (2.01 km) oval is a favorite of many of the drivers who race there due to the unique shape and d...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1184858 ... Read more
