Wonderful gift for a skater
I gave this as a birthday present to my guy friend who is a figure skater. Yes the book is old but he says that everything in it is as true today as yesterday (particularly the exercises for strong edge control). What has changed is the competition rules-- school figures are no longer done, but their mastery will make you a better skater.So you can read this book as history, or as a text. The exercises are still good. However, no one dresses at the rink the way she suggests anymore.

Skating from yesteryear
While this book is no longer in print, it should be found inmany libraries.It was written by former US Olympic skater Maribel Vinson(Owen) who had competed in the 20's and 30's winning many US titles.Because ofher extensive history in the sport and continued involvement through herdaughters' skating careers, MS Owen is able to provide years of experiencemade simple for the novice or casual skater. Some photos are included ofMaribel's daughter Laurance(the US national champion) in various skatingpositions. There are also diagrams for the footwork involved whencompleting different jumps. It probably now includes many things no longernecessary in competetion as well as not including the many spins and jumpsthat have since been added over the years.While this book will probablynot have much use for skating today, it does offer a look of what skatingwas like when artistry was more important than athleticism. Tragically ashort while after this book was written, Ms Owen and her daughters alongwith the entire US figure skating team died in a plane crash on the way tothe 1961 World Figure Skating Competition in Brussels,Belgium. ...
