5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview of The Sport
I had done some surf fishing when I was younger. Now that I'm approaching retirement I've decided to get back into it.The fish haven't changed much, but surf rods and reels have changed quite a bit since I bought my equipment in the 1970s.Everything, from rods and reels to lines and hooks, is lighter, more powerful, more specialized and more sophisticated these days. While I'm certain I could still catch fish with my old gear, I'm sure that some new stuff will make my efforts more fun and efficient. The instructions in this book are clear and the photos are sharp and very helpful.Long-time sharpys won't learn much from this book, but newcomers and casual surf anglers can pick up enough information here to get them into fish often enough that they will want to stay with the sport and become more expert at it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice pictures, few things to learn
I bought the book believing i will learn a lot, however i did not learn as much as expected.
Pros:
*Nice pictures and good quality paper.
*Easy to read and fun on a rainy day.
*Low cost.
*Recommendations about the tackle, the best of the book.
*A few pictures about casting

Cons:
*No drawings about fishing line or fishing strategies. Only drawings availables are at Appendix 2 and are about knots for hooks, not for lures, and are pictures no drawings.
*NOT the complete book of surf fishing. It is far from a "complete book".

If you are a beginner on surf fishing, you will hardly find a "complete book on surf fishing", you will need 2-3 books that covers different topics, but not this one.

Not recommended for surf fishing learning techniques or strategies. However

4-0 out of 5 stars Help Getting Started
This book is a good place to start if you are looking to fish the surf. It gives practical and useful advice to help you, but like any sport you won't read yourself to competence. You have to just get out there and do it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
This is an outstanding book for those just getting into the sport of surf fishing. I found this to be a great reference book, good color pictures and a easy read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Surf Fishing
I got this book for my husband. He loves to surf fish. He was surprised I had researched and given him a book that he wanted.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Became My Outer Banks Fishing Bible!!!
I bought this book in the 80's, when I was a kid.I still own my original copy, and every bit of it is just as relevant as it was 25 years ago.Surf and pier fishing on the Outer Banks was the highlight of my youth, and something I had an enormous passion for.I spent months preparing for each and every family trip, to be sure I could maximize my fishing experience. This book was my bible.Along with tips and stories from locals, and wisdom gained over decades, this book was a crucial part of shaping me into a seasoned Outer Banks fisherman.I will never part with this book, as it's value to me is far too great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I grew up in NC and my grandfather was an avid fisherman. I am learning saltwater pier and surf fishing now and I need something to give some basics, and some specifics about this avocation. This book explains so much about things I have seen my entire life and been curious about but didn't think to ask. I am sending a copy to my sister and mother as well. I think anyone that is going fishing along the coast of the Carolinas must get this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Locating Fishing Spots in the Carolinas
This book is about where one can coastal fish in the Carolinas and for what kind of species at different times of the year. I found it to be a very useful guide to plan future surf fishing trips. The author does not give a lot of specifics about rigging tackle. I think Eric Burnley's Surf Fishing the Atlantic Coast provides that information a little better. I plan to keep Goldstein's book in my truck when I am in the Carolinas, and I certainly will look to buy future, updated editions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Great Information
This book has lots of great information about fishing in the Carolinas. There is good information on different types of fish and locations and techniques for catching them.

It's pretty cool when the author mentions pier owners, bait and tackle owners, etc. by name. This book is really a must read for folks wanting to fish the Carolina coast!

Highly recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
Rudow’s Guide to Fishing the Chesapeake is the most comprehensive guide to angling on all of the Chesapeake’s waters from main-stem Bay to tributaries and tidal creeks. Detailed charts show over 550 specific hotspots and 35 public shoreline fishing hotspots, plus 33 reliable public boat ramps.

Specific Bay sportfish and the most effective methods of catching them during each phase of the season are meticulously discussed on a fish-by-fish basis, as are both modern and traditional tackle and rigs.

Never before has a fishing guide tackled each aspect of angling the Chesapeake Bay so thoroughly. Topics are as varied as casting for spring trophy rock on the Susquehanna Flats, jigging for seatrout at the Bay Bridge, wire-lining for flounder at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, and ice fishing for perch in Port Deposit are all covered in depth. There are even sections on shoreline fishing for each area of the Chesapeake. If you want to boost your catch rate every time you fish the Bay, this book is the ticket. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Chesapeake Bay Fishing Bible
This book is the bible for fishing the Chesapeake Bay from both land and sea.Mr. Rudow provides detailed charts of each section of the bay (including all of the rivers) to get you on the fish quickly. That alone has helped me save money on fuel since I now know where to go. He even gives suggestions on lures and techniques. You can't beat that!

All of his books are a must read, but if you fish the Chesapeake Bay, this is the book to own.

In case you have not seen it, I also saw his latest jigging book [...]) and I plan on taking advantage of many of his techniques this year to see if it will help us land more fish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get This Book!
Not to be blasphemous, but this book is literally the "Bible" for fishing the Chesapeake Bay.It is fantastic.I have learned so much from it.My copy is dog-eared and marked up with notes that I can't even loan it to friends to read...not that I would risk doing that for fear they would keep it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Local knowledge
This book had good local knowledge of spots and the techniques that can be successful for various species in the Chesapeake. A good buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blueprint for fishing the Chesapeake
"Rudow's Guide to Fishing the Chesapeake" is a fishing gem.
Over 300 pages long, and if you are serious about fishing the world's largest estuary (over 180 miles long) and its tributaries, this book is a "must buy." Published in 2005, it has locations of spots to fish on charts collected from head boat captains and other knowledgeable sources.

The book is divided into three parts - Part 1: Chesapeake Bay Regional Guide in four chapters; Part II regarding Tactics and Tackle, Part III the various game fish of the Bay with identification of 17 different species of fish and their habits. The Table of Contents is a good one but the book could use an index because of the wealth of information served up on a platter for the reader.Use a yellow highlighter and post it note tabs for your favorite parts.

If you would like read an excerpt of Rudow's Guide to Rockfish, a companion book, go to: http://www.geareduppublications.com/freergrtipspix.html
Both books make great gifts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Chesapeake fishing guidance!
This book is extremely helpful to someone who wants to either learn how to fish in the Chesapeake Bay or improve on their current talents and knowledge. The book covers in depth fishing locations, techniques, lures and rigs, and specific information on the main fish you will go after. I highly recommend the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Day's Fishing
I read this book in the book store and decided this was the book I needed to purchase for our son to read to his son. They enjoy fishing on any free day during the summer and this book provides our grandson some good knowledge of fish and equipment.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Son Loves this Book! Authetic & Accessible!
I have scoured our local library and purchased 5-6 children's books on fishing from Amazon -- this one ranks very near the top ("H is for Hook" also get's high marks for illustrations and condensed version of text, and "Gone Fishing" is a nice read from a father/son narrative perspective).

I have to admit that after reading the editorial reviews I was a little afraid the author would be a bit snooty (the whole Yale Angler thing) and too trout obsessed (previous publications for adults) -- but this book is very accessible and speaks to a wide audience. I love the way he uses the tackle box to introduce different fishing techniques and conquests.

The illustrations are detailed, authentic, and beautiful. My husband loved finding his favorite lures depicted and described.

We haven't gone fly fishing with my two year old yet, but he has caught a few crappy (which get equal attention in this book) and he has decided his favorite fish is the "wide mouth bass," based largely on Prosek's amazing illustration of this species.

I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Day Reading
Prosek's beautiful watercolors augment a whimsical tour through the fisherman's tackle box. Each piece of hardware and lure is considered in relation to the sort of fish it is designed to catch. The store culminates in finding the lucky talisman familiar to most fishermen, a lucky hat.I enjoyed reading this to my six-year-old son who exclaimed at the end of the story, "I can't wait for us to go fishing again." That's a sentiment sure to warm the heart of any father looking to get his child excited about the sport he enjoys.

5-0 out of 5 stars Casting about for Stories
I've always suspected that fishing's allure has a lot to do with the stories that inevitably come from each outing. This handsome picture book is a delight and would be a fine gift for a fisherman of ANY age, up to about 100 years old, I suspect. It introduces the reader to the magical secret world of lures, bobbers, other equipment that allow the wily fisherman to prevail over his hapless object of attention. It draws the reader back to the page, like the fisherman is drawn back to the stream where success was so close, and opens up the possibilities of "next time" and "maybe tomorrow" for fishers of all ages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for those who need it
I am a librarian who loves the vast variety of humankind.I love knowing that when I walk down the street I could easily be walking past the greatest parachutist or professional kite flyer in the world, and I would never know. The hobbies and talents of the people of this world takes my breath away.Which makes reviewing a title like, "A Good Day's Fishing" an incredibly complex arrangement.First of all, I have never fished. Not a day of my life. This isn't because I dislike fishing or find it disgusting in some way.I've just never been a situation where someone handed me a pole and a tackle box and said, "Let's catch a few" (or words to that extent).Like many people I've flipped past fishing shows on PBS on cloudy Sunday afternoons and idly wondered who watches that stuff. But I have every respect for the people who enjoy the sport.Author James Prosek enjoys the sport. He enjoys it so much that he's written and illustrated multiple texts on trout, fly fishing, and other such topics. He's sort of the author/illustrator prodigy of the fish world. And now, at the grand old age of 29, he's switched his focus to children's books. No matter how big an author, no matter what their specialty, sooner or later everyone tries to write a book for kids. And that's where I come in.Looking "A Good Day's Fishing" over, I was baffled. As I've mentioned, I'm not exactly experienced in the hobby.I mean, I really enjoyed the recent children's book by Cynthia DeFelice, "The Missing Manatee", that outlines fishing in great exciting detail. But a picture book that simply catalogues the things you need to catch yourself a crappie or a pumpkinseed sunfish.... let's just say that there's a very specific type of child that's going to find this book enthralling.

Now the book follows a kid as he goes through his tackle box and tells the reader that, "what I need for a good day's fishing is in here somewhere!".We look at various lures and the fish each one is adept at catching. There are spinners for yellow perch and bobbers and sinkers to catch carp.We see extra line and a wide range of hooks (which, the hero notes, are cool) alongside forgotten maggoty sandwiches (my favorite part, actually) and a stray eel. There are rods and plugs and flies and lures. And finally, "my hat", which ends the text.We are then treated to a large lure and fly glossary that tells you absolutely every last little thing you ever needed to know about the equipment listed in the book.

This kind of book is so specialized that I cannot really recommend it to anyone who ISN'T downright fascinated by fishing. But if your child leaps at the chance of standing alongside large bodies of water with their own little tacklebox, then I can think of no book better than this one.Admittedly, I'm a little baffled as to why this book got on the New York Public Library's 2004 100 Books to Remember list. It's too specific to please a great many people (and frankly, if you're not a fisherperson yourself, the glossary reads like stereo instructions). But Prosek's put his heart into it, and it shows.Wielding his watercolor brush with great panache he's as adept at drawing the tiniest little white maggot as he is a largemouth bass gunning for a plug. This is a lovely book to look at.And detailed out the wazoo.

So if you like fishing and want your kids to like it (or they already do) then this is the perfect picture book for them.If you've merely a mild interest in the sport, however, avoid this book at all costs. For those that need it, nothing else will do.For those that don't, there are other fishies in the sea.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little book
This book has information for all levels of fishermen. From simple to complex, I have learned a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Want to understand leaders? Pick this one.
As I started to fly-fish not long ago I received as a gift an Abel reel with backing, line and leader all ready to go. Three weeks after starting, my leader was messed up with wind knots and all sorts of bumps to the point it was impossible to cast and fish. So, how can I make a new one? I decided then to purchase this little gem and I was amazed at how much information was packed inside such a tiny book. Everything you need is right here, being a starter as me or not. Leader construction, knots, materials, formulas (for different sizes and line weights), care, maintenance and so on. You cannot go wrong. As a plus, you can carry this book everywhere. Highly recommended.

Product Description
With his colorful tattoos and booming hip-hop sound track, Mike Iaconelli has turned the world of big-money competitive bass fishing upside down.In Fishing on the Edge, Iaconelli tells his own story–and it’s a whopper: a Philly-born, Jersey-bred Yankee who’s been stealing the spotlight from bass fishing’s traditionally all-Southern anglers, attracting fans and dominating one of the fastest-growing sports in America.

How did Mike Iaconelli, a college-educated kid from New Jersey, come blasting into a sport
dominated by old-school stars like Gary Klein, Kevin VanDam, and Denny Brauer? How did Mike, aka “Ike,” take a secret childhood passion and turn it into a profession, earning million-dollar sponsorships and a storm of media attention, ranging from ESPN’s SportsCenter to profiles in The New York Times and Esquire? While Mike has attracted both fans and foes on the tour,
his success speaks for itself, especially his victory at the 2003 CITGO Bassmaster Classic, the Super Bowl of competitive fishing.

Forty-four million Americans fish, but no one does it quite like Mike Iaconelli. In Fishing on the Edge, he lets you in on the secrets to his extraordinary success–how he developed his “power” fishing style, how he attacks the water, positions the boat, and perseveres through those days when the bass just aren’t biting. With sidebar tips that can be used by any fisherman–from using spinner baits to picking out the right rod to his no-fail “secret weapons”–this is an intensive, informative, and often raucous journey through the life of a brash young man destined to do for fishing what Tony Hawk did for the X Games: take the sport to a whole new level. At the same time, it’s the compelling first-person story of a man who prepared carefully every step of the way, kept notes on every fish he ever caught, and executed the perfect plan to get to the top.

A tale of passion, competition, and extreme personality, Fishing on the Edge is a book for anyone who loves the sport of fishing, wants to turn a hobby into a career, or is simply fascinated by a man’s unstoppable drive to succeed.

this book was not what I had expected.I was looking for fishing in general and this book focus was on bass fishing.Needed better descriptor

5-0 out of 5 stars Ike tells it like it is!
I loved this book for several reasons.

1) First off, I bought this book because I like Ike's style, and wanted to learn his methods! I got all of that information plus some more! Throughout the book there are sections that outline the different methods, so it's easy to mark for reference later on. (I also recommend Ike's DVD to see the methods in action: Ike's Rules for Better Bass Fishing - Volume 1: Taking Luck out of the Equation)

2) Ike tells it like it is the good, the bad, and the ugly... If there are any aspiring anglers out there with a dream of making it big, read this book early on!!!

3) Ike is truly one of the leaders of the new generation in fishing. He brings so much excitement to the sport, all while keeping with tradition. His vision for the sport is what is needed to take things to the next level. He tells his story with passion and humor. It's just a great read all around! You won't be disappointed!

Product Description
The first questions a beginning lure collector usually asks are: 'What is it?'; 'What is it worth?';and 'Who made it?' In order to provide these answers and facilitate the reader's understanding of antique fishing lures, the authors of this book have intentionally avoided lengthy pages of text. Instead, they have used excellent color photographs and a lifetime of knowledge and experience with fishing lures to create the most complete and convenient single volume available today: Fishing Lure Collectibles, An Encyclopedia of the Early Years, 1840 to 1940. This benchmark concept has proven its acceptance among its readers by becoming Collector Books' bestselling book on collectible fishing lures. That the tackle collecting hobby is difficult to learn is undeniable, and it is for this reason that these foremost experts prepared this helpful publication. As one of the three founders of the National Fishing Lure Collectors Club and editor of its magazine, Dudley Murphy, along with noted lure collector Rick Edmisten, bring a combined total of over 75 years of advanced collecting experience to this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST OF MANY
First, I must confess that I do not use they type of lures that are featured in this wonderful book.I gave up this type of fishing years and years ago and only trout fish using flies now.Never-the-less, fishing gear, any fishing gear, absolutely fascinates me and I love looking at the stuff. But that is not the primary reason I own this and quite a number of other books of its ilk.

I have for years bought and sold these things; in part to make money, but more so because it is a nice hobby and I get to meet many nice people. When you buy and sell such things, I have found it is best to know a bit about them. This work goes along way in assisting me in this need for knowledge. There is a lot of money to be made in this hobby, but conversely, there is a lot of money to be lost if you know not what you are doing.

Secondly, I paint and draw. One of my primary subjects for still-life paintings and drawings is fishing lures. Now always having the actually lure in front of me is a bit of a handicap, and to be frank quite impossible because some of these fishing lures are quite rare and I have absolutely no access to them, but lacking the best thing, i.e. the actual lure, the photographs in this work are by far the second best thing to use.The color is extremely accurate as is the quality of the photographs; sharp, clear and detailed.I have found that the measurements provided by the authors to be extremely accurate. Using this work, I am able to reproduce very nice reproductions on canvas, paper or what ever material I choose...I have even used gourds from time to time. The clear and concise text accompanying each photograph provides invaluable information, both technical and background wise.

I like my paintings to be as accurate and authentic as possible and this work gives me the edge I need.

Now the only warning I might give to those who contemplate purchasing this work is that the prices or worth assigned to each lure can be misleading. As with any other collectable or antique, any given piece is only worth what someone is willing to give for it or willing to part with it for.Yes, the prices given here do give you a ballpark figure and a starting point, but just because the book states the lure is worth a thousand dollars and you find one in your grandfather's lure box, does not mean that you will be able to run out the door and sell it for that much.Likewise, if you plan to buy a particular piece, I certainly would not start the bargaining process at the prices given here. But all that is common sense and really does not distract from this work what so ever. NO BOOK gives you prices that are written in stone!Trust me, I know about such matters. Another warning her for the would be collector: Due to the price of some of these objects, there is a very large knock-off and counterfeit market out there right now...do be careful and do your homework. Some of these people are quite good at what they do!

The book is well arranged by manufacturer, maker or company and it is rather easy to find what you are looking for.Do keep in mind that no one book can possibly cover all of the thousands upon thousands of lures that have been manufactured or hand made over the years, but hey...you have to start somewhere.I also like the way the authors have included the history of these item which is an education within itself.

On the less practical side, this is just a fun book for those interested in such things to simply brows through. Many wintery evening can be spent going over this work using it as either a "wish list" or just for the pure joy of seeing and learning. You know, if you look at it from a certain angle, the reader can learn much concerning the minds of men and the minds of the fish he or she pursues just by looking at what has been created to try to lure these tricky critters onto the stringer.

If this is an area of interest for you, then this is one of those must have books to add to your collection and I do highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a good book too
Another lure book, if you like fishing (or even better if you are an addict like me) you will find this book interesting. It will send you to sleep if you don't like fishing or the history associated with the ways and means of catching fish.Like other companion books, these are beautifully presented with nice photo's and informative text.Sorry I haven't done a book review since high school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not to be missed.
Any collector interested in antique fishing lures and the history of fishing lure production will find all the answers in Fishing Lure Collectibles, a clear guide to a notoriously difficult collecting hobby focus. Two experts provide clear details in Fishing Lure Collectibles: An Encyclopedia of the Early Years, 1840 to 1940. Each manufacturer's items are surveyed along with history, individuals who purchased patent rights from companies, changes in bait quality and production standards, and more. Not to be missed.

Product Description
Some 62 million people fish in America. For these people, the next best thing to fishing is swapping fish tales. Incredible Fishing Stories offers over 80 truly incredible fishing stories--world records, strange happenings, and the revenge of the fish. Author Shaun Morey traveled the world to interview anglers, boat captains, guides, and witnesses. You'll read about Captain Jimmy Lewis who, in a moment of sheer bravado (or insanity), speared by hand-and landed-a 1,600 pound hammerhead shark. Or the 800-pound blue marlin that made a final lunge-ripping up the deck and dragging a chair, with Paul Clause strapped to it, to the bottom of the ocean. (Paul survived; so did the marlin.) Here's one book that goes out to prove that truth is stranger than fiction. Photos and illustrations throughout. ... Read more

I have three children ages 11,12,14.Ever since this book came, there has been "friendly fighting" over it.Any fisherman should like it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A CREEL FULL OF AMAZING FISH STORIES

On their first trip to Alaska a couple also embarks on another first - a salmon fishing expedition. The novice fisherman has a strike, a hard hit that begins a struggle with a salmon that lasts more than 37 hours.

Sound like a "fish story"?Well, it is, but it's a true one.Rather than putting together a collection of apocryphal fish stories, Shaun Morey has compiled a creel full of unusual amazing true fish stories in a compact 143 page volume that's fun to read.

In addition to phonographs, the book is sparked with lively illustrations and little known facts about our piscatorial pals.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor George, poor parents who have to read this book
I'll preface my reasons for giving this book the lowest rating possible by saying that my 2-year old does enjoy reading this book. That being said, the only good thing I can see about this book is that it helps us to get out of the house more often because when my child comes running with this book in hand saying "read this one Mommy" I will go to any length to avoid reading it to her.

There are many good Curious George stories out there. This is not one of them. The only one I've read that surpasses this one in terms of awkward language and nonsensical plot is Curious George and the Bunny. *Spoiler Alert* In this book Curious George does not actually catch any fish; he decides to "fly a kite on a string" instead of "catching a fish on a string".Come on people, are we really that PC?And where is the man in the yellow hat?Now I know why the parents of our 5 year old neighbor so kindly handed down this book to us (along with the Bunny book!).Do yourself a favor and choose anything by Dr. Seuss instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This was a great story about George. I loved reading it to my son. The great thing about the book was that it was hardboard. It was perfect for a 3 year old. It was hard to tear-up.

3-0 out of 5 stars At least George doesn't mimic the smoking!

Unlike some of the other Curious George material I have rated, I was leaning toward 4 stars here, but the *FOUR* instances of smoking must incur a penalty. I understand the scenes were originally drawn fifty years ago, and in principle I frown on revisionist media (like airbrushing on the cover art from Paul Newman's The Hustler), but this is a children's book after all.

Other questionable behavior sees George falling into the lake, but he only inconveniences himself. In the end, he decides flying a kite is more fun than trying to fish.

Like Curious George and the Bunny, this board book simply takes scenes from the earlier Curious George Flies a Kite. Similar typos in the title here, too ("g" and "f" should be capitalized on the front cover). Part of a set of board books released in 2001.

5-0 out of 5 stars Curious George book
We paired this book with the Pretend & Play fishing set as a gift item.Curious George is a well known classic - I hadn't seen this book in book stores. It complemented the set well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Curious George
Unlike the newer tv cartoon, this book has the classic Curious George I grew up with.I thought the story might be a little difficult for my 3-year-old to follow, but it's not.He loves it. ... Read more

This book has the same, textbook style information on various fish species in Florida.Nothing special here.Color drawings of fish ok, but why not include actual color photos?

Suggestion:save your money.Go on the internet and research the fish you plan on fishing for.You get much better information on fishing forums.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fish Florida Saltwater guide
Well written and illustrated. Plan to use it for the first time on a fishing trip to the Florida Keys in June. Will keep me legal with the Fl game and fish enforcement officers who patrol randomly and often. They expect each fisherman to know the rules of the legal size and creel limit of each type of fish. This will be in our fishing boat the whole time as a ready reference and will be studied prior to the trip and used as lunch and dinner conversation among the 3 fisherman who are making the trip together. I think it will prove to be worth much more than the price I paid for it.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK but not great
I was looking for a book that was more specific to places and techniques I could use for inshore fishing. This book didn't satisfy me for that application. It's not badly written, just not what I was hoping for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good reading
this is good for beginners and a refresher for some of us who haven't been fishing for several years

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Primer to get started
I have started fishing more with my sons, so I thought it would be useful to buy a few books to make sure that I know the lingo, and do not make a fool of myself. Cliff Hauptman's books is a nice primer with lots of useful information. In it, he discusses the basic equipment and tackle needed, and various types of fish that are commonly sought. I found the information quite useful, and well worth the read. Some of the pictures and diagrams are not the best, but I felt more confident the next time I went out on the lake with my boys. Plus, we caught more fish, which is always nice.

If you are new to fishing, and looking for a quick read to get started, then I recommend this book. If you are more seasoned, this is probably not a great choice. Good luck, and see you at the lake.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book

5-0 out of 5 stars Fishing tandem Flies
If you like to fish tandem flies or are moving in that direction you will find this book to be very informative. It explores every conceivable method and rig for tandem fly fishing and is well illustrated. I am using it in conjunction with Dave Hughes book Trout Rigs & Methods and find them to be an unbeatable combo.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best fly rigs ever - no more twisted leaders
I have rarely used tandem flies either fly or spin casting since the buggers (literally) get tangled up. A lot. Usually there would need to be a very heavy weighted fly or sinker on the bottom and the second leader, usually is not adjustable and rarely long enough. But that's just me.

Meck's book shows the real skinny about the type of flies to use, how to attach them and techniques that work best. I'm not saying I don't catch fish with my own tandem flies it's just that his way is better. A lot better. This is a great book to show you how to sepnd more time catching fish than untangling fishing lines/leaders. I will also be using this ice fishing here in Colorado.

This book is awesome, and especially great for the beginner, with plenty on tackle and techniques at every lake, reservoir, stream and pier worth fishing...and even a few that aren't!I used to fish as a kid with my dad, and am trying to get back into it.After reading this book I caught my first rainbow trout in 25 years.'Nuff said.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Angler's Bible, California Edition
Tom Stienstra has spent his entire adult life exploring the outdoors in California and the Pacific Northwest. He supports his avocation by writing guidebooks to the state, the most popular being California Camping and California Hiking, the latter co-authored with Ann Marie Brown. But his true passion is fishing and it shows on every page of this book, the eighth edition of California Fishing.

Like other books in the Moon California recreational series, this one divides the state into 15 geographical regions ranging from Redwood Empire and Shasta in the north, to San Diego County and the desert regions in the south. Each region is given its own chapter and prefaced by a map giving noted locations for each write up. Every chapter then includes 10 to 80 fishing locations, each of which is briefly described, along with local boating regulations, nearby camping or resort opportunities, and similar amenities.Of course you will also be told what to expect, best seasons to visit, and some strategies for each body of water.

Fishing is an enormously addictive activity. As I child I owned multiple tackle boxes andwould dream over my lures nightly as fishing season approached.I gradually moved away from fishing towards hiking exclusively, but after reading the book, I find I am again bitten by thebug. This April may well find me backpacking in Henry Coe State Park, and should that be the case, I will bring along some ultra light equipment and see if I can tempt a few bass or bluegill. So be forewarned; this is an excellent book, but it can lead to seriously reevaluating the relativeimportance of many thingsin your life. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to fishing
This book is a good, solid reference for most things to do with fishing.Experienced anglers won't benefit as much from this book since it seems targeted more for beginners and folks with modest levels of fishing experience. That's not to say there won't still be some beneficial tips or knowledge for experienced people, however. They will just receive less benefit from this book.

Overall, it covers the major areas of fishing - gear, techniques, boat control, structure, seasonal movements, etc.It illustrates a few useful knots to cover the most common situations, but is a little weak in that area.It contains lots of clear photos and is a great book to get one started on the fine sport of fishing. The text is simply written and clearly explains the basic concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This is a good read for someone who had been out of fishing for a while

4-0 out of 5 stars Good all around freshwater fishing book
I was looking for a book that covered all freshwater fish species. I am mostly a bass & panfish fisherman, but I do get occasional opportunities to angle for something else. I wanted a book that would allow me to read a chapter on a specific type of fish and know some good lure types and tactics to try if such an opportunity arose. Overall, this book does a good job at meeting those requirements. On a few of the species the lure information seemed a little sparse and some of the information on tactics was information that was already talked about earlier in the same chapter. Some of the tactics also specified the use of a boat/fish finder, which may not work the best if you are fishing from shore or a canoe/kayak. The book covers most freshwater gamefish species found in the US(bass, walleye, trout, etc), but I would also have liked to have seen a chapter on non-gamefish (carp, gar, etc). Overall a recommended book.

Product was exactly as described. Arrived right on time when I needed it for the holidays. Thanks so much!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for beginners

3-0 out of 5 stars Good content, horrible binding
The content is good.It contains a lot of information on the species found in Alaska waters, which I knew 85% of the info already, and then a lot of stream facts type of stuff.

It is more thorough in terms of breadth than some other Alaska fishing resources but generally doesn't tell you a lot about each location (usually a paragraph or two).

The binding came apart and broke after looking at this book for the 4th time.

I would also recommend Scott Haugen's "Flyfisher's Guide to Alaska."Together these books give you a lot of good information.

Tell you the when, where, how, and flies and lure suggestions with pictures of each. Tremendous resource. Order now if you will be fishing in Alaska.

3-0 out of 5 stars Content 5 Star Binding, paper 1.5 Star
The book is geographically organized with species by season charts, maps and general travel information and contact information (as of date of pub.)for each region. Overall the content is good coverage of the fishing and brief commentary on what to expect. But it can be spotty as only what the editors felt were the major waterways or lakes are covered and minor merely mentioned. Given they had a vast area to cover I give the content 5 stars.

I have the old edition and the new edition which is essentially a magazine weight paper and inks bound between covers to be poor. I prefer the old style on sturdy paper. My copy also has some 'mis-struck' pages. (No I don't think that makes my copy collectable- I think it means the printing was cheap.) I give the binding 1.5 stars (1/2 pt. for the many color photos-magazine quality or not color beats BW or none).

    So I averaged the rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fishing, A golden guide from St. Martin's Press
As a novice angler, I was looking for a definitive guide on how to get a fish on the hook - the right way!I knew that it had to be more then just pot luck. Most of the fishing I do is ocean/river and salt water fishing, because I live near the Jersey shore.Although, after reading Fishing, I'm ready to try fresh water fising now.Well, the Golden Guide on fishing more then met my expectations. When I ordered this little book on fishing, able to fix nicely in my tackle box for on-sight reference, I ordered another fishing book for cross-reference purposes.I didn't have to, because this book covered every conceivable aspect of fishing imaginable from A to Z.Just like a marine preparing for battle, you have to know what field equipment you'll need to be successful. This book helped me to take an angler's review of my tackle box and equipment and update it.If you want to learn how to tie fishing flies by hand then this may not be the right book for you.If you want to learn how to fish and what you will need to be successful then this is the book for you.Rick S from South (New) Jersey

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for a Beginner!
This book is AWESOME for the beginner! I just got back into fishing (haven't fished since I was a kid) and it really covers most of the bases. It goes over the different areas to fish (rivers, lakes, ponds, etc) and gives you tips on the hot spots of this places. It also reviews the different types of hooks/jigs/bait to use for which fish. It's a great little book to keep with you and also give as a gift to someone who is just starting up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for the beginning and experienced fisherman!
I saw an earlier edition of the "Golden Guide to Fishing" many years ago when I was young and it left an impression on me then.I always believed it would make a nice addition for teaching the Fishing Merit Badge in Boy Scouts. After purchasing and reading the new edition, I am convinced.A great resource for not only the beginning fisherman, but also for experienced anglers as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Beginner's How To Fish Book
I have owned several editions and copies of this book, going way back to the first edition when I was 9.I used it to become one of the best fisherwomen in our family.
That first edition book got lost in my travels, so I got the new edition for my older daughter to use it for a ready reference for fishing tips when on trips. She is 25 now and is a good fisherwoman like her mother. That book eventually got lost too, so I got another new edition for my youngest daughter of 12 and also for myself so I can learn how to fish on the Southeast Coast of the United States.I am 50 now and still take the book with me whenever I go fishing in the Pacific Northwest as a ready reference on fishing rig set ups.

4-0 out of 5 stars Every page is worth framing
Aside from being a good, introductory guide to fishing, this book's artwork makes it a classic of 1960s artwork. The book contains great old photographs of men in waders, leaping tuna, and dead fish hanging from hooks, as well as terrifically kitschy drawings of various trout, reels, knots, and mahi-mahi.
The book is well organized and thorough, and even contains an index.

    Product Description
Many anglers who wish to get started in fly fishing are intimidated. With so many choices of expensive rods, reels, lines, leaders and flies, it's difficult to know where to begin. And it doesn't help that a few of the so-called "experts" in the field write articles implying the sport is difficult to master. The truth is, to be a successful fly angler you don't need to know everything about everything. That's what sets this book apart from the many other fly fishing books available today. In these pages, veteran fly-fishing instructor Chris Hansen concentrates on teaching you the basics. For example, if you aren't sure what level fly angler you are, check out Hansen's "10 Ways to Tell If You're a Beginner." Want to learn how to fly cast? Read "12 Tips to Making the Perfect Cast." And if you think you must carry everything but the kitchen sink with you every time you wade into a stream, look at Hansen's "8 Accessories for Every Trip."

Hansen understands the best reason to try fly fishing is that in many situations you can catch more fish with flies than you can with spinning or baitcasting lures. In this book's final chapter, "Catching Fish on Flies," he details these situations for panfish, trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and even northern pike. In addition, he shows you his "Top 10 Fly Patterns" for each species and the best retrieves for getting finicky fish to strike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best beginning Fly Fishing Book on the market!!!
I own a huge library of Books on Fly Fishing and am in the industry. Each year I teach as many willing souls to flyfish as I can. This book is the best beginning fly fishing book on the market!!!It has wonderful instructions, diagrams, and pictures to make the teaching complete. If you buy one book to get started, this is it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for anyone new to fly fishing
This is a great introduction to fly fishing. For a newcomer, the equipment and accessories can be overwhelming. Now, I feel like a can make smarter purchases and not end up with junk. I also now know the terminology so when I go on a guieded trip or even browsing in the store, I don't feel complete stupid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beginning Fly Fishing
This book provides basic introductory information so that you can go out and purchase your rod, reel, lines, waders and all the other equipment. After you've made your purchases you get advise on casting techniques and locations to fish.

4-0 out of 5 stars Raw beginners
I agree with earlier reviews in most particulars, but it should be added that the book - published in 2003 - is a bit dated, a slight matter which relates to some equipment suggestions. For better or worse, close to a quarter of the book is related to catching fish other than trout and salmon - on flies. Still, for raw beginners, reading this book is a very good way to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fly fishing for true beginners
As a person who had never picked up a fly rod in his life, I purchased this book with the hopes that it covered fly fishing at a basic enough level that my appetite would be whetted to learn the sport. I was not disapointed - the book starts at the beginning with the selection of basic equipment, (rods, reels, gear), and progresses logically through fly casting techniques, reading the water, and selection of flies for different types of fish. There is generous use of color photos and diagrams and the chapters are well written and easy to follow. My one criticism is that the section on the selection of clothing, waders, and accessories seems to go a little overboard,(do I really need to go out and purchase a vest with 25 different storage pockets and a floating sleeve to store my flies in?), but that is tempered with the knowledge that as one's skill and passion for the sport evolves, the equipment that will enhance that experience is out there.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has a curiosity about fly fishing, and the committment to put what the book teaches into practice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome! Great tips
The guy tells you exactly what you need to know, the book also comes with maps, and he tells you where to go. Like, get on the turnpike, get off exit abc and then make a left on this street. He also gives you tips on getting bait and lures. This is not a how-to book, but he tells you exactly what you need to do. (just not in detail, like diagrams of lures). I found some new fishing places, and I live in North NJ. You need to read this book every different season, and wherever you go in NJ. A must have for NJ salt water fisherman.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book
This is a MUST book for Surf fishermen in New Jersey. He makes it so easy to move up and down the coastline and know locations and local spots to get started. It is an indispensible reference book. Unlike so many fishing books that tell you to go to this lake or this town, he takes you there and helps you get started with specific spots and descriptions and seasonal timelines for different species. I've bought more than one to put in my car and surf bags. I never want travel the state surf fishing and exploring new spots without Jims expert book.

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm mixed on this book
I think Jim did a great job explaining tactics and habits but I would have like to have seen more detailed maps and charts on when the fish were running and where.

5-0 out of 5 stars My review of "Fishing the New Jersey Coast"
I recently read the book "Fishing the New Jersey Coast" by author Jim Freda.Jim does a great job at explaining some of the best places to find striped bass, bluefish, weakfish, and other coastal species.I found the book to be very helpful in my pursuit of better fishing. If you are interested in learning more about fishing and how to catch the big ones, I strongly recommend you buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fishing the New Jersey Coast is great!
I started reading this book to see what the author had to say about the area where I fish most. However, when I finished that chapter I promptly went to page one and read it from cover to cover. Lots of great info throughout!!! Anyone who fishes NJ should read this book! I will be refering to this book for many years to come. ... Read more
