5-0 out of 5 stars Recommendation
Product was exactly as described. Arrived right on time when I needed it for the holidays. Thanks so much!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for beginners
This is the perfect book for beginners. If you car just now getting into fishing, this is a great first book, no matter what type of fish you going for.It talks about different type of fishing and goes into details on how to catch them, and also some good boating/tackle info.

I would say for beginners, like me, this should be the first book you buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything I Need to Know about FW fishing
This book is great and everything I need to know, and then some, regarding freshwater fishing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not really complete...
Although it says it's a Complete Guide, I didn't find it so. There is a level of assumed knowledge. So if you're a beginner, like me, skip this book and find something more basic.
Specifically, it doesn't show how to thread a rod/reel; it doesn't show how to connect up sinkers, spinners, hooks, etc in the combinations you need for each type of fishing; and it doesn't describe how to do certain types of fishing -- it just names them and moves on.
It's also not specific enough for the region you live in. It's a wide overview of the types of Freshwater fish found in the US, but it doesn't break it down by region. Try to find a local guidebook for the types of fish in your specific area instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for every skill level of Oregon anglers
I have bought every revision of this book since the seventh. Why? The updated information it provides can be priceless. This fishing bible is not limited simply to what fish are biting and where. You'll find this reference book filled with random tips on what species are most common in different areas of your destination, what to catch them with throughout different seasons, if payment is required to park at certain places, accessible roadside parking, new changes to laws in the areas, where private property may border waterways, the latest state records and individualized tips to help you venture forth and catch your next trophy or meal. The information is endless and the maps are very useful as they show docks, roads, trails, put-ins and take-outs. Coming from an Oregon native and avid fisherman, this book is well worth its weight in gold. One thing to keep in mind is the information in this book is not designed for fly anglers seeking information on hatches and casting techniques. It is a general resource to help you plan for your next trip sufficiently and what to expect when you get there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only One You Need for Yellowstone
Craig Mathew's brief but detailed writings for each water is just great and stating plain facts. It's even just fun to read. Also, his store "Blue Ribbon Flies" is probably the best in West Yellowstone. Fly-fishing guides are very experienced and the store has lots of fly-tying material in high grades. I also recommend to review Craig's other book "Fly Fishing the Madison". That's also well-written with his smooth and detailed explanation. SY

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for the YNP fly fisherman
Craig Matthews gives you great information and helps the reader pick and choose where to fish in YNP.With Matthews knowledge of the Park and insect activity it's hard to go wrong with this book.Great information on hatches, locations and whether the hike is worthwhile to take make this a great book.If you are planning on fishing YNP you need this book. I would also purchase his dvd on fishing Yellowstone National Park and on fishing the Madison.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Go to Book" on Fishing in the Park
The "Go to Book" for fishing in the Park. Has all the information one needs to find "backcountry waters" as well as the "hotspots". I've fished Montanna for the last 7 years, but have never fished in the Park until last year. This book cut the learning curve by a considerable margin. Not only does he unleash his considerable knowledge of the "spots". He is very complete in informing the angler of the certain flies and times of the year to use them. I read this book practically every time I sit down to the flybench. Just to jog my memory on what to prepare for the coming trip. I wsih I had bought this years ago and fished the park alot earlier in my years. Could have cut alot of corners! Thanks Craig---great job!

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Yellowstone Fly Fishing Guide by Craig Matthews and Clayton Lolinero
This guide provides very detailed information on the rivers, streams and lakes in Yellowstone National Park, the fly hatches and terrestrials found on each (by month of year) and the best patterns to fish with.It also shows which fishing areas can be accessed by car and which require a long hike.Ifound it invaluable for planning a fly fishing trip to Yellowstone.

5-0 out of 5 stars I call the book the bible for yellowstone.
This book is easy to use and extreamly useful. It splits the park up into four regions, tells you where (or not to) fish, and where to start looking in your flybox.I have used it the last 3 or 4 years and will use it as long as I vacation in Yellowstone.I have looked at several books on fishing in Yellowstone and this is by far the best that I have found. ... Book Description
With his colorful tattoos and booming hip-hop sound track, Mike Iaconelli has turned the world of big-money competitive bass fishing upside down.In Fishing on the Edge, Iaconelli tells his own story–and it’s a whopper: a Philly-born, Jersey-bred Yankee who’s been stealing the spotlight from bass fishing’s traditionally all-Southern anglers, attracting fans and dominating one of the fastest-growing sports in America.

How did Mike Iaconelli, a college-educated kid from New Jersey, come blasting into a sport
dominated by old-school stars like Gary Klein, Kevin VanDam, and Denny Brauer? How did Mike, aka “Ike,” take a secret childhood passion and turn it into a profession, earning million-dollar sponsorships and a storm of media attention, ranging from ESPN’s SportsCenter to profiles in The New York Times and Esquire? While Mike has attracted both fans and foes on the tour,
his success speaks for itself, especially his victory at the 2003 CITGO Bassmaster Classic, the Super Bowl of competitive fishing.

Forty-four million Americans fish, but no one does it quite like Mike Iaconelli. In Fishing on the Edge, he lets you in on the secrets to his extraordinary success–how he developed his “power” fishing style, how he attacks the water, positions the boat, and perseveres through those days when the bass just aren’t biting. With sidebar tips that can be used by any fisherman–from using spinner baits to picking out the right rod to his no-fail “secret weapons”–this is an intensive, informative, and often raucous journey through the life of a brash young man destined to do for fishing what Tony Hawk did for the X Games: take the sport to a whole new level. At the same time, it’s the compelling first-person story of a man who prepared carefully every step of the way, kept notes on every fish he ever caught, and executed the perfect plan to get to the top.

A tale of passion, competition, and extreme personality, Fishing on the Edge is a book for anyone who loves the sport of fishing, wants to turn a hobby into a career, or is simply fascinated by a man’s unstoppable drive to succeed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Book
Great Read!I reccomend this book for anyone who follows Pro Bass Angling or who fishes. It's fun to read about the mishaps that the Pros have made and continue to make.Great look inside the tour and how intense fishing can really be.There are also some great tips scattered throughout the book. So, read it with a highlighter and forget what the Teachers and Librarians say, dog ear the pages or you'll never find them again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Look at the Unknown Side of a Sport
I found this book to be quite informative about the unexpectedly interesting sport of professional bass angling. The book is primarily about his journey from fun fisher to world champion professional angler. As it turns out, this backstage tour of a sport takes you through a lot of hard times, uncertainty, emotions, personal growth, and (of course) gossip. That being said I don't really agree with other reviews that you will learn much about how to fish from this book; he does spend some time talking about specific techniques but usually it is something to do with his "stone jig" which he created and he gets 18 cents for each one you buy.

I ended up with a largely sympathetic impression of Ike and his life journey thus far.I would say that it is true that at times there is a certain bravado that feels more like a marketing ploy than a glimpse of his true personality. But in the end, he is quite clear that he is interested in creating a brand of himself. At times his discussion of any negative emotional episodes and his role in them did seem a bit juvenille. You know? (You'll get that joke when you read the book.)

All in all, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Arrogant but likeable
He's a little too high on himself, but the cockiness is backed up with consistently solid performance, so who's to judge?

5-0 out of 5 stars Tell it like it is!
Say what you will....but MIKE IACONELLI KICKS BASS!!!
The only pro that gives you every single detail on how he works his magic out on the water. Great read ...insightful....delightful and sometimes.........its just freak'in hilarious. Hey, if your into bass fishing or not once you start to read you won't be able to put it down. Heck, I'll even go as far as to say if you don't like this book I'll re-fund your money.................JK.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but could be much better
This is a good primer on most of the MAJOR (read crowded) rivers in Oregon. It does not mention any of the hundreds of smaller great fishing rivers, any river tributaries or the Snake River (the second largest river in Oregon). This is a good general guide but most information in this guide is available from the Fish and Wildlife Service and the Forest Service in much more detail - and for free.

5-0 out of 5 stars A practical guide for car-based fishing for salmon in Alaska
This book has really grown on me.When I first received it I was a little disappointed thinking it was a little light on content. As I've thought more about planning my own Alaska fishing vacation, I now value the author's pragmatic style. He tells you with detail and precision how to get the most out of a car-based excursion fishing for salmon. From what and how to pack, to specific milepost markers for the best fishing at specific times, to how to get your catch home, it's all there.Be aware that this book is ONLY about car-based fishing and ONLY about fishing for salmon; also many of the areas identified as hotspots are very popular and will be crowded (the author uses the local phrase "combat fishing" to describe such situations).

4-0 out of 5 stars good resource
A bit limited in scope, but overall a good source of information on getting around. full of good resources to help you plan your trip

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful in planning

this is a great book if you're getting ready for alaska.well written

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for the first time visitor
This book is well organized and provides a great deal of useful information for the first time alaska visitor. The charts are particularly helpful as you travel along the highways. They quickly identify and rate all the major rivers and their salmon runs.

However, there is very little information here that every traveler I met on the highways didn't seem to already know. All the rivers rated as excellent are known by every highway angler in the state and they are all vying for some room at these locations. The best way to discover 'good' fishing locations is from the alaskan neighbors you meet at the campgrounds. So, I feel it's a good get acquainted book. A one trip book. A useful handbook. Keep it on your dashboard. ... Read more

Knots are so very important and his knowledge of how to tie these knots and teach others to do the same is presented very nicely in the book and on the video. We spend alot of time and money in pursuit of fish and the instruction presented by Lefty will make us all better fisherman.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gordian approach to knot tying
Lefty Kreh has put together a comprehensive book of clear drawings, coupled with a video of the southpaw himself carrying on about the knots. The knots are for virtually any fishing application, not just for fly fishing. The book is ring bound and sturdily covered for field used. The book and DVD are wonderfully complementary, and I have always enjoyed Kreh's "just folks" stage presence. You can't go wrong with this set. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Sure to be a favourite book"
I bought this book for my grandson when he was four (he's now nine) and he just called to tell me that it is his "all time favourite book".He has just become a Cub Scout and was asked to bring his favourite book to the next meeting and this is the one he chose. His father loves fishing, camping, boating and working outdoors whenever he gets a chance. My grandson seems to be following in his footsteps and the Buck Wilder books are perfect for him.The pages contain a myriad of pictures and information, well drawn and thought out so that there is something of interest and new to be discovered from the age of four to whenever??I (and my grandson) highly recommend this book and the others in the series for your boys and I'm sure that girls would like them too if they love nature and the outdoors.

For the unschooled, fly-fishing can appear impossibly difficult and otherworldly, the province of tweedy sportsmen with enough time and money to look credible on the water. But as Peter Kaminsky explains in the opening chapter, this graceful method of catching fish doesn't require "the touch of a surgeon, the body mechanics of Tiger Woods, and the spirit of a Zen master." What it does require is a little dedication and good instruction--and Fly Fishing for Dummies delivers on the latter. This crash-course tutorial removes the mystery with chapters on gear, flies, casting, and fishing strategies. There's even a chapter on some of the great North American trout rivers. And the tone is far from tweedy, with plenty of good humor and trivia mixed into the excellent info. --Langdon Cook, Sports & Outdoors editorBook Description

3-0 out of 5 stars Fly Fishing for Dummies not all that great
This book is an OK overview of the sport but there are much better books out there.Fly Fishing (A Trailside Guide) by John Merwin is one.Merwin's book has extrememly colorful pictures that get you excited about fishing and the illustrations make it very easy to learn somewhat complicated knots.Fly Fishing for Dummies doesn't do a horrible job of explaining things but different books I've read do a much better job making it easier to learn and much more enjoyable.

1-0 out of 5 stars Falls short for beginners
I'm a big fan of the Dummies series but found this one very disappointing. The author goes into excruciating detail about some peripheral parts of fly fishing, while completely glancing over some of the essentials.

Much of the content is anecdotal at best, to the point that it feels like the author is just trying to fill up pages. For instance, he devotes two entire pages to what kind of vest he thinks you should have, and the section on sunglasses is almost laughable. The chapter on "Great Rivers for Trout" across the US belongs in a niche guide and feels hopelessly out of place in a beginner book.

In the mean time, Kaminsky completely skims over the essentials. While there are plenty of lectures about why you should get a case for your rod, the section on casting feels like an afterthought. I find it difficult to believe that the author has ever tried to teach a beginner to cast, nor could any beginner (like myself) learn to cast from his brief explanation. Other areas that left we with a lot of questions include fly selection, how fly fishing is affected by the seasons, and actual fishing strategies and techniques.

3-0 out of 5 stars This 'for Dummies' book misses the mark for dummies
I liked the book but found it to be a 'miss' on illustrations and specifics. For a Dummies book I expected there to be the maximum amount of examples on how to set up a new rod, real and leaders and tippets.

I am brand new to fly fishing.I have a full set up that needs to be rigged and I just did find the book to have a step-by-step area in the book to show you how and where you should tie you flies on your leaders/tippet.I think a section saying "So you bought a new rod, real, lines and flies and now you need to set it up to fish" would be a perfect chapter to add. Then the author can start breaking it down piece by piece and the myriad of options for tying and set up.

Overall it gives you the basic idea but I think the author may have lost the "you know nothing" perspective when writing this book.I do know more after reading it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Definitely NOT for beginners
I have been fly fishing for just over a year and decided to pick up this book to get another opinion on choosing flies, on-stream techniques, equipment to make everything a bit easier.Unfortunately, this book did nothing to help.Even the section on tying knots was more hindering than helpful (and I already knew how to tie most of them!).I'm still on the search for a decent book, but let me tell you, it's definitely not this one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Adequate
This book does not tell you what you need to know to get started in fly fishing. Armed only with this book your initial enthusiasm will degrade into frustration. Fly fishing is a very knowledge and technique intensive sport and this book is very spotty here, although an enjoyable read. Try the L.L.Bean Fly-Fishing Handbook or some other book which gives you details on casting, strategies, and techniques and from there you will need to find a knowledgeable friend or guide to progress. ... For the subspecies of saltwater angler who insists on doing his fishing with flies, Kreh is the guru and this is the holy book. Now in its third revised edition, Fly Fishing in Salt Water first surfaced in the late '60s when the idea of fishing the seas with a fly for bluefish, stripers, bonito, and bigger game like tarpon and tuna was not only novel, it was sneered at. Fly-fishing in saltwater is still a relatively new frontier, but time has proven Kreh a visionary and the virtual father of the sport, and this how-to remains an essential part of a saltwater fly-angler's tackle.

Why fish salt water with a fly? Because, says Kreh, it combines the best physical and cerebral aspects of fishing and hunting, with the added complication that "no stocked fish roam the seas." Unlike trout fishing ("Trout fishing writers have always tended to complicate a rather simple sport," carps Kreh), where the angler must understand from the start that trout in a pool are relatively stationary creatures that exist only on the food available in that pool, saltwater species are fish in transit, constantly on the move, often in schools, and they gulp down anything they run into. Kreh's bible begins by engraving that difference in stone. Then it patiently introduces you to the sport's basics step by step: the necessary tackle and how to care for it; technique; fly patterns; fish behavior; the long cast; understanding tides and where fish are likely located; and specifics of deepwater fishing, inshore fishing, and fishing at sea from boats.

"The sea has always been a fascination to me, and the creatures in it offer the greatest challenge a fly rodder will ever know," writes Kreh. His unparalleled infectious enthusiasm--just look at the cover photo of the author: a happy man if ever there was one--and expertise make that challenge as reachable as it is alluring. --Jeff SilvermanProduct Description

5-0 out of 5 stars The bible for salt water flyfishing
What Lefty Kreh did with saltwater fly fishing was nothing short of revolutionary. It's easy enough to walk to the nearest store and buy saltwater gear and flies now, but Lefty helped pioneer the genre and many of the flies we now enjoy - including the Lefty's Deceiver.Lefty writes the way he speaks in public; generous, affable and full of infectious energy. No serious angler's library is complete without this book.

I first read this book in college in South Florida in the early 90s.Unable to afford bait, I took an old fiberglass fly rod out and following this book's advice, caught snook, reds, trout and even juvenile tarpon and hammerheads.

If you like this book, (and you will) you should also pick up Lefty's DVDs on tying.

5-0 out of 5 stars As usual; Lefty at his best.
As usual; Lefty at his best. Another book where Lefty has the ability to teach and simplify with the written word and short stories like few others in the sport. I highly recommend all his books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tons of useful information
I am a beginner in the sport of saltwater fly fishing.Lefty covers all the bases with the book.He explains choices of equipment.I was ready to hit the water after finishing this book in a few days.

5-0 out of 5 stars Always the teacher
Lefty is a unique treasure for fly fishers. He is full of experience, eager to share it, and able to communicate his wisdom. Unlike more typical fly fishing writers who specialize in conveying mood and meaning, such as Lyons, Gierach, and Weatherell, Lefty's books make you want to be there because you are now armed with so much useful information. I can't wait to delve into ocean flyfishing for the first time. ... Read more

Book Description
For fishermen, the only thing more fun than catching fish are the stories they tell about those fish . . . and the ones that got away. Nobody knows that better than Chris Santella, author of the best-selling Fifty Places to Fly Fish Before You Die. For his latest homage to anglers, Santella invited 50 celebrated fly fishers to share their favorite fly-fishing stories based on their travels and experiences. The result is this unforgettable collection of stories that are, surprisingly enough for fishermen, true.

Fifty Favorite Fly-Fishing Tales includes stories that cover the panoply of emotions— comical, poignant, inspirational, incredible, absurd. It tells of Ralph Cutter casting in complete darkness for blind catfish in the caves of Borneo, J. W. Smith boxing grizzlies to protect his tent camp in Alaska, and George Anderson fly fishing for saltwater crocodiles in Cuba. It also describes how Jean Williams, through trout fishing in the Colorado Rockies, helped to bridge the chasm between a type-A father and his neglected son. Accompanied by stunning photographs, the stories in this book reflect not only the rich experience of fly fishing but also how it can extend beyond the rivers, oceans, and fish to touch the core of our daily lives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book. Informative.
This book gave me a flavor of the aquatic terrain I could expect to find on a Florida fishing trip. I am very satisfied with it. Mr. Sargent's other books are good too, at least the Tarpon Book and the Trout Book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frank's da man

As time goes by and our local sport fishingindusty explodes, fewer and fewer professional guides that are in the knowshare their spots, Frank wrote this before the net ban. It is probly thelast puplicized "here's how to get there and do it book" you'llever see. Frank has tons of respect on the water and off, both as theoutdoor writer for the Tribune and Florida Sportsman. All of theinformation and spots revealed in his book are real, true spots, some ofwhich I personaly fish weekly, almost always with great results. But don'tlet Frank tell you he showed them to me. 2-0 out of 5 stars Cruioser's Handbook
Book not that helpful with everyday tips on landing a big one. Book seems to stress exotic cool fishing methods that most of us will never use nor should be using. More time and illustrations should have been devoted to tying knots.

5-0 out of 5 stars For ocean fisherman
This is a long, detailed book that gives you all the info you could want on living off the ocean.Be advised, there is no fresh water information in the book. That being said, if you want to improve your ability to catch fish at sea, this book has it all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fishing Explained
I found this book to be both easy to read and very informative.. I have little to no knowledge of fishing and I found a wealth of practical hands on advice in this book. It seems to cover the subject in depth and lucidly with lots of antedotal stories to illistrate the topic. There are also lots of pictures and diagrams showing and illistrating what is being discussed. At the end of every chapter the authors also give a detailed suggested equipment list to help you get started with hands on application of that type of fishing.

I have not had a chance to put this into practice but I no longer feel bewildered about how to get started or how to catch what with what equipment.

I highly recommend this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Curising In Isolated Parts Of The World? Don't Forget It
I have done quite a bit of crusing, fishing and diving but I always wanted to learn how to clean and prepare the fish myself. The book gave some very good insight into this but I didn't think it was detailed enough. The booksstarts out with the basics of fishing while crusing and then on to everytheme possible: 1.) Fishing under power or sail 2.) Gear and Tackle(excellent drawings for knot tying) 3.)Offshore Trolling 4.)Adrift orAnchored 5.)Dingy Techniques 6.) Walking, Wading and Diving 7.) Tools andNets 8.) Arranging your vessel for fishing 9.) Processing your catch 10.)Medical Considerations for the Crusing Fisher 11.) Getting the most fromyour new crusing skill 12.) A guide to Edible Fish and Invertebrates (would be much better in color as I have not seen many fish come up blackand white) 13.) Seafood recepies

If you are planning any type of crusingfor a longer period of time. This is an absolute must have. A transatlanticor gulf stream crossing can sometimes get boring and knowing these skillstake out a lot of the intimidation a lot of us have about fishing andcleaing our own catch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fishing Guide for Crusing Sailors
This is an excelent source book for the voyaging sailor,or anyone, who wants to learn how to have better success when fishing the worlds oceans. The authors have cruised extensively aboard their yacht,Ian, and have abackground in marine biology. They have a unique perspective into how youcan increase your success rate in having fun while catching dinner. Topicscover equipment selection, tips for catching specific species, toxicityissues, and much more. Even if you are not cruising the Seven Seas, youwill learn a lot about offshore fishing from this book. I reccomend it. ... Read more

Book Description

One of America’s best known fishermen with more than 50 years of on-water experience, Bill Dance is also a tournament champion and a television personality. His tips will help any angler catch more and bigger fish. Even experienced fishermen may not know that dark-colored lures work best during low light conditions; that reluctant bass often bite at smaller lures fished slowly; that 75% of all line failures occur at the knot, so good knot tying is essential to success; that when waters rise, bass move shallower—when it falls, they move deeper. Dance’s knowledge is so wide-ranging that absolute beginners and crusty old veteran fishermen alike will be educated and entertained and amazed. This book is being supported by The International Game Fish Association (IGFA), a leading authority on angling and the keeper of fishing’s world record.
