Beautiful prose, wonderful illustrations--I've been a fan of Sharon Creech's young adult books for a while, but I was caught off-guard by how much I loved this children's book.

Wonderful!
Wonderful language and striking, whimsical illustrations!
I used this book in a tutoring session in which the child picked the book out on her own.We were able to find many examples of similes and metaphors, as well repetition.There were inferences that could be made which is another higher level thinking skill best suited for the older elementary students.I would use this book with 2nd grade and older for these reasons.

Disappointing
I bought this book for my younger children (ages 4 and 7) and have tried several times to read it to them.Unfortunately, it simply does not hold their attention.I agree with the other reviewer that the illustrations undermine the impact of a nice little story.While I think the illustrations are somewhat interesting, my children cannot see what I am reading in the confusing and disjointed images.They quickly become bored (an unusual reaction for them).

Great content but kindle version is poor
This book is fantastic in hardcopy, however the Kindle version is crippled with horrible conversion of the color photos to black and white. The photos - at least on the iPad Kindle app - are very dark and not useful. Much of the information in the book relies on Mr. Schullery's fantastic trout feeding photos. Buy the hardcopy or wait for the iPad iBook.

Great fishing book for kids!
This book is great for my husband to read with my son - perfect for a fishing daddy and son!The book uses repitition and also has good pictures of fishing.It is hard to find books that have to do with fishing for kids, especially bass fishing!(At least we think that they are bass fishing...)

Disappointed
Though the concept is a good one, I try not to read this to my kids.As an English major, I was disappointed in this book.It's written mostly with incomplete sentences.Each page reads more like a caption to the accompanying picture than part of a story.

Polluted Waters
Good Christian though he may be, this man lacks the moral stature to write about fly-fishing.

The author's caught on to half of it, that's for sure!
Haggard actually got half of it right... people enjoy affinity groups, and they're a great place to connect with unchurched people and build relationships.

However, his definition of a "cell group" is weak and he lumps all the various kinds of affinity groups in that definition.

Healthy cell groups are holistic, meaning they contain the lifestyle commanded in both the Great Commandment and Great Commission. They are also Christ-centered, and do not find their purpose in snowboarding or scrapbooking.

However, I firmly believe that what Haggard has written about in this book should be employed by holistic small group-based churches as a relationally evangelistic arm of each group in addition to a true, Christ-in-the-midst gathering of believers.

Man cannot live on interest groups (bread) alone.

Nothing Better
I've read many books on small groups and building community within the body of Christ. This is by far the best! Having tried the traditional models for small group ministry for over eight years, I discovered that most people simply don't have the interest or commitment to gather with brothers and sisters based on geographical location. They have all failed. But this past Sunday, three months after having read Haggard's book, our congregation is already beginning our first semester of small groups, and the excitement surpasses anything I've experienced. This book will transform your church and your community. And the priesthood of believers will move more fully into their ministries than ever before!

Freemarket Cell groups
I bought this bought this book because I do respect Ted Haggard ministry and his books. After reading the book, I bought another 2 for my pastors. By the time I wrote this review I bought another 10 books for friends in ministry. I do think that this book is a great resource for anybody that want to grow his church

Best Guide on the subject EVER!!!
I Love this guide. I have been fly-fishing for forty years and have taught a small army of new fishermen and women. I always start my students with a gift of this guide to get started right. The guide is wonderfully creative and fun in it's presentation, but is deceptively packed full with valuable information for the novice and seasoned trout seeker alike.

Great for beginners
Curtis Creek Manifesto is a great primer for beginning fly fishers, especial the preteens and the teens. It is illustrated like a come book, easy reading.
On the negative side, which is minor, the book was written in 1978. So, some of gear, especially fly lines are outdated information.

This book is a classic, I bought to teach a neighbor boy the art of fly fishing.

The Book
I consider this one of the most important books ever written. The subject, content, audience, format and writing style all come together in the best treatise on fly fishing ever. It is simple but remarkable, reverent and whimsical. You want to change the world? Buy this by the crate and give it to every ten year old you know.

The best book on the topic
I live in Bishop, CA which is a flyfishers paradise.This book made flyfishing simple, easy to understand and is the best single work on the topic ever written.I say that while adimiting that I was a friend of the late, great Sheridan Mullholland Andreas Anderson and I miss him.Don't miss this book.I have just ordered a copy for a flyfisher beginer.

I am a newbie at the sport and bought this after seeing it highly recommended on several group discussions.But I was disappointed.The book is very short.It is written in comic book style.I don't have a problem with this, but I thought it was limiting.

Good overview but little substance
This book is good as far as it goes, however, overall I was disappointed by this particular Dave Vedder work. It provides a good overview of the subject but lacks the specific and detailed information that I have come to expect from books by this specialist publisher. For example, you will find very little information to assist making a rod purchase decision (and float rods are expensive due to their length!). Given the small size, few pages, and lack of real substance, I consider this book to be very overpriced.
My recomendation is to instead purchase "Jig Fishing for Steelhead & Salmon" which is also written by Dave Vedder. This is very detailed and comprehensively written and includes the information of value from his float fishing book.

Very informative pocket sized book
Now finally a good book about float fishing. The author provides good description of the sport.He does a good job at letting the reader know what equipment will be needed and how to fish them.He also does well addressing the concerns of west coast steelheaders as well as great lake steel headers.

Would recommend for beginners and those new to float fishing.

This book makes me want to fish!
Float Fishing for Steelhead: Techniques & Tackle was a great read written in an uncomplicated, straight-forward way.Vedder is good at talking to his readers about fishing as if the exchange was between two friendly fisherman out in the wilderness somewhere in between casts.His argument about the virtues of float fishing are excellent and he draws comparisions to the other methods of fishing and very reasonable conclusions as to why someone would want to float their line in a wild river full of snags and obstacles as opposed to bouncing on the bottom.It makes perfect sense and it WORKS.Vedder knows what the fish are doing when they come up the river and how to get that grub right in front of their faces, and he tells you how to do it in a language that is very easily understood.Its a quick read, and he touches on the other methods of steelheading just barely, but enough so if you want to try throwing a few lures when all else is failing there is a bit of guidance.Float fishing is not the same as bobbing for worms.There's a lot more to it than that and Dave gets into detail without making things complicated (something, I might add, that holier than thou fisherman tend to do way too much.)Using a float is an excellent way to: KNOW what your line is doing, SEE the bite, AVOID the snags, PLACE your offering in hard to reach areas, LAND some big fish, and ENJOY the whole experience.Thumbs up for Dave Vedder!

Very very basic
If you know ANYTHING about fishing, you really don't need to bother with this book.There's nothing wrong with it exactly, it's just very simple.I did learn a thing or two, but considering the size of the book, it wasn't worth it.A good gift for a son or daughter perhaps.

Fly Fishing for Dummies
Very good transaction.Book was as listed, like new, and arrived earlier than I thought it would.

OK but could be better.
A fairly good book but there are probably better ones out there for beginning fly fishing. Did not have a systematic explanations of necessary knots for backing to reel, line to backing, leader to line, and tippet to leader.

interesting and informative
I bought this book as part of my new found interest in fly fishing.It didn't let me down with interesting features in pretty easy to follow language.I did think the chapter on tying flies was a bit long - not my thing at the moment.But all in all value for money.

Fly Fishing for Dummies not all that great
This book is an OK overview of the sport but there are much better books out there.Fly Fishing (A Trailside Guide) by John Merwin is one.Merwin's book has extrememly colorful pictures that get you excited about fishing and the illustrations make it very easy to learn somewhat complicated knots.Fly Fishing for Dummies doesn't do a horrible job of explaining things but different books I've read do a much better job making it easier to learn and much more enjoyable.

Falls short for beginners
I'm a big fan of the Dummies series but found this one very disappointing. The author goes into excruciating detail about some peripheral parts of fly fishing, while completely glancing over some of the essentials.

Much of the content is anecdotal at best, to the point that it feels like the author is just trying to fill up pages. For instance, he devotes two entire pages to what kind of vest he thinks you should have, and the section on sunglasses is almost laughable. The chapter on "Great Rivers for Trout" across the US belongs in a niche guide and feels hopelessly out of place in a beginner book.

In the mean time, Kaminsky completely skims over the essentials. While there are plenty of lectures about why you should get a case for your rod, the section on casting feels like an afterthought. I find it difficult to believe that the author has ever tried to teach a beginner to cast, nor could any beginner (like myself) learn to cast from his brief explanation. Other areas that left we with a lot of questions include fly selection, how fly fishing is affected by the seasons, and actual fishing strategies and techniques. ... Read more

Heartwarming story about a little girl fishing with her grandpa
Fishing stories for little ones are not very common, and "Granddad's Fishing Buddy" nicely addresses this deficiency. It is a simple yet heartwarming story about a little girl who goes on a fishing trip with her grandpa, and is eager to know the identity of Grandpa's yet-to-be seen fishing buddy. When the reader eventually guesses at the identity of the fishing buddy, it is a rather cute revelation. The heartwarming story is enhanced by the beautiful illustrations by Stephane Jorisch. Obviously, this is a great read for grandfather and child, but it is also a perfect read-aloud for preschoolers and up.

As a sportsman, I have had a hard time finding books about hunting and fishing for my three-year-old daughter.No luck on a hunting book so far, but this is a great little story about a girl fishing with her granddad.The length of the story is just right, and the artwork is good.

Everything You Want To Know. And Much Much More
I found this book extremely useful and entertaining. It doesn't speak down to you or use terms that I wouldn't use. It's not a cheap book,but once you purchase it you find that you got what you paid for! Great for people just getting started as well as the hardcore fisherman.Buy this book for yourself or as a present and you will be glad you did.

This book is thebest
The book 'Fishing Encyclopedia'by Ken Schultz is the best around. Globally the information can be used to learn many things that Anglers ought to know. This is the best book I have ever read. Must read for anyone interested in fishing

Sea bream or river bream
It's a great encyclopedia, very good, but about photos or pics that identified the fish is 2 stars, it is correct because that is not a fish encyclopedia but a fishing encyclopedia, and I ask where are the photos of rods, reels, lines, baits etc., they are there but very few, in suma to much to read.e.g. The cantonense name "HAK LAP" (page 245 - The river bream (Acanthopagrus berda) is a prominent...) is only one of a kind that we have here, and translated to english means BLACK BREAM, and it is a black bream but fished at the river, but this is only the common name, so I don't know the correct name of HAK LAP is ACANTHOPAGRUS BERBA (river bream)or ACANTHOPAGRUS BUTCHERI (black bream). Anyway they are a big family, like HAK LAP(balck bream), WONG KEOK LAP (Yellowfin bream), PAK LAP (silver bream), KAM SI LAP, KAI KONG LAP, HAK SA LAP,(the last 3 are only from this region) this are the most common fish (breams) that I saw around here. So this book is not enough for me. About the book I thing all people that like to fish must have it, because no one can tell you more than the book, and all the book are your best friend, it will not say NO to you when you like to read it, right!

Should be required reading for fly fishing the suds!
Lou Tabory spells out every step and stage of how to fly fish in the salt for striped bass in this book! His writing is easily understandable and intelligent. He explains how to use the water to bring your flies to thefish, how to determine where the fish should be in many different types ofwater, which flies to choose in certain conditions and why, and he does allthis is a manner that even a non-fly fisherman can understand!

He alsointroduces you to his flies, all are simple, all are well thought out andvery effective! I've been fly fishing the suds for 10 years now and havecome to reply on more than a few of Mr. Tabory's patterns, they are simplyingenious! Like I said, should be required reading!

The best fly fishing book I own
I'm a beginning fly fisherman who, so far, has fished the White River tailwaters in Missouri and Arkansas as well as a couple of outings on the Norfork river. I own several instructional fly fishing books, and this one is by far the best. While this book was written primarily for western tailwaters, I believe, by adjusting to your local entomology, the tactics can easily be adapted to tailwaters anywhere. I very much enjoyed the book and have learned a great deal from it, it has definitely made me a better fisherman. I also purchased Pat's dvd "Nymphing Strategies", which I think is excellent as well.

Excellent Book
This is an excellent book on just about every aspect of Fly Fishing and not just tailwaters. I would highly recommend this book to the beginner as well as the more advanced fly fisherman. The techniques discussed in the book are laid out in a very easy to decipher format. Out of all the instructional books I have, this is by far the most concise and covers it all, the aquatic insects and the flys to match them AND how to fish them, dry fly fishing techniques, how to read a stream, and most importantly the section on nymph fishing and how to set up a useful nymphing rig and fish it effectivly. Put this book together with a few select books from Dave Hughes ("Trout Rigs and Methods" and "Handbook of Hatches" to name a couple outstanding books), and you are on your way to some very succesful fly fishing. This would be the first book I would buy if I was just starting out fly fishing (In fact ordered another copy for my father yesterday). As an added bonus, the photo's are amazing throughout the book. This is not just a book on tailwaters, though that is the emphasis, but this is a great primer on fly fishing in general. Mr. Dorsey did a fantastic job with this book.

Book for west coast
I fish on tailwaters in the southeast so I was excited about getting this book.I find it to be a good book and well written with lots of good pics.However it is strictly for west coast tailwaters and even says so in book intro.Wish Amazon had said so in its ad for the book

Good, but a little basic
This was a good book for my first trip to the Bahamas to look for bonefish.A more specific book about bonefish would probably have been a bit better... something like Chico's book "Bonefish."

Waste of time and money
I found this book while searching the web for Bahamas fishing information.The website for the book touts Stephen and Kim Vletas as a great resource for information about fishing the Bahamas.I tried the email addresses they gave on their webiste and they never bothered to reply.I mailed them a check to purchase the book which they never responded to or mail me my book.Another charge for me to cancel the check!I even contacted Kim by phone who promised to return my call with much needed information but she never bothered.There is nothing in this book that isn't readily available on the web.Don't waste your money on this book and more importantly don't waste your time trying to get any useful information from these people.

I expected the do-it-yourself sections to have some tips on where you could drive & wade out to fish, not just list independent guides instead of package deals. I don't consider hiring an independent guide to be doing it myself.Since our trip was not soley for fly fishing, we wanted to get a guide for a day or 2 & maybe do some independent fishing from shore on a couple of days.We did this, but with zero success on the days we fished from shore.Others (including both guides we used) said that fishign from shore could be productive.I had hoped that the book would have had soem tips for this type of fishing for each island.Or just told you if it wasn't a viable option for a specific island.

BTW - I can strongly recommend Captain Perry Demeritte, who is listed in this book - he was excellent.

All that said, given the selection of books available on this topic, this is probably your best bet.We also still had a great time AND got some fish.

Not Just for Californians
Island boy from Hawai'i but have siblings living in the Bay area so to prepare for fishing the piers there several years ago I bought this book.The tips, and techniques in this book are very detailed with even a pier by pier description of all fishing piers along the California coast.The techniques described are very informative and can be used by pier fishermen not only in California but the whole West Coast, East Coast, and Gulf Coast.They even came in handy fishing the piers here in Hawai'i.I highly recommend this book, and the newer additions too.Mahalo again Ken!

There is no better book for pier fishing in southern california. If you are a fisherman, and do not own this book... well you should.

Pier Facts Good
This is a very useful tool for evaluating pier fishing on the California Coast.Since I grew up in So. Cal. and migrated to NorCal, this book was especially useful in describing the changes in techniques required to catch fish in the North.It was also comprehensive in that it covered every pier in Calif,which also included spots in the Delta.I highly recommend this as a "starting tool." Hoever, there is nothing more valuable then chatting with the local pier gurus, that is if they're in a talkative mode.

I gifted this to a friend who intended to start pier fishing but he was from the East Coast and didn't know where or how to start.He reports that the book was a life saver for him.So that he at could least formulate the right questions when fishing off his local pier in Pacific.

AMUST READ!
Thanks Edith for one of the best books I've ever read! I've borrowed Fishing With John at least a dozen times from the public library-in the mean time tried to find it in used book stores, flea markets, and garage sales for a couple of years! Finally got lucky in a book store in Vancouver B.C. A public park in Pender Harbour B.C. is named in honour of John Daly-which says it all! You have to read it folks!

What Edith Iglauer doesn't describe is as important to the texture of this book as her detailed accounts of trolling for salmon withJohn Daly along the coast of British Columbia. Wonderful story!John Daly was my husband's uncle, and we used to go to Garden Bay, BC to visit him.We have wonderful memories of John and miss seeing him, even tho' it's been probably 20 years since John died.I'm sorry I never met Edith, altho' my husband Lionel and his aunt LeslieJoslin met her when she gave a reading from the book in Seattle in 1988 or1989.Now made-for-TV movie on Lifetime Channel, they changed the name to"Navigating the Heart" with Jacqueline Smith and Tim Matheson. peaceful kayaking
The guide to Kayak Fishing was a great aide! Most helpful to see how
it's supposed to be done before launching initial effort. Wife was
greatly relieved she didn't have to anchor her own kayak and watch out

Great Pics OK Info
What I like most about this book is the photos. They are awesome! It really gets me motivated to go out on my yak and start fishing! There is a lot of basic info like how to paddle, types of kayaks, equipment options and not a lot of specific info - for example, do not expect to find to the answer to what type of lure will catch a trout in California, you will not find that. This is a fun book to have around the house or place on a coffee table.

Interesting reading, but limited almost entirely to sit-on-top kayaks.Although sit-on-tops allow more flexibility for fishing, it would be nice to know that most of the book is dedicated to them, and to have some information for those who might like to try fishing from, for instance, a sea kayak.It seems that every book spends a lot of time going over basic strokes etc.Still an interesting read.

This is was a great read full of information on selection, equipment and rigging, not alot of specific fishing information, it is assumed that you already fish and that you are interested in transfering that knowledge to a kayak.
