4-0 out of 5 stars Nice overview, well written.
Certainly not intended to be a comprehensive review of all fishing environs, this text provides a nice starting point for exploration. It's well worth purchasing, if for no other reason, for his description of fishing the Chehalis and the perils (?) of negotiating private property.

5-0 out of 5 stars washington fishng guide
This fishing guide is good. It provides a lot of details needed to fish fresh and saltwater. No guidebook can cover every body of water in equally great detail. But Rudnick covers the basics well for just about all the waters I fish.
I use the book frequently to plan trips. It's been accurate so far. Some of the best ideas in my book, "How to catch salmon, sturgeon, lingcod, rockfish, & halibut along the pacific coast," came from Terry's contributions. I recommend his book.

Very good book for someone that needs a little guidance on saltwater fishing. I've also fished freshwater, but have always wanted to know more about how to catch fish while vacationing at the beach. After reading this, I have more confidence in what I will be doing this coming month while surf fishing in Florida.

Product Description
Fishing for the Moon Long ago, several monkeys lived in a quiet wood. While playing one day, they discovered a well and saw in its depths a reflection of the moon. They immediately reported the wondrous sight to their king: "Something terrible has happened! The moon has fallen into a well!" The monkeys agreed to retrieve the moon by forming a long chain over the well. The first monkey climbed onto a tree by the rim of the well, swung one arm over its largest branch and gave the other to the second monkey, who took it and lent his free arm to another and so on, until they hung close enough to the well. The bending branch creaked under the weight of the monkeys. The last monkey swiped at the moon in the water. As his paw touched the moon in the well, he broke the calm surface of the water and the moon vanished. Simultaneously, the branch broke and all the monkeys fell into the water.

Fishing for the Moon is an illustrated gift pop-up book that features nine classic and centuries-old Zen stories. Beautifully and simply painted in Sumi ink, these spreads cleverly illustrate in 3-dimensional artwork classic Zen parables. Each story ends with a lesson, imparting accessible Zen tenets of how to achieve simplicity and harmony for everyday things for a more joyous, meaningful, and more richly experienced life. Fishing for the Moon is a refreshing and engaging presentation of Zen, and is the perfect gift for not only the Zen enthusiast but readers of all ages interested in these timeless lessons for humanity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully crafted Zen stories for all ages
In spirit, pop-up books are for children, but the artistically rendered _Fishing for the Moon_ has lessons for adults too.

These are simple insightful stories from the Zen Buddhist tradition that teach us a thing or two about awareness, meaning, and kindness, illustrated with traditional watercolor techniques with understated colors.

Excellent for a set of bedtime stories or for your coffee table with its watercolor art, and even moving parts.Unfortunately there's no "look inside 3D" edition, or you'd be able to see how the monkeys swing off a branch to reach for the reflection of the moon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Storytelling done afresh!
She isn't all about theory, ladies and gentlemen: she practices what she preaches.Ms. Hansen consciously seeks to improve herself as a practioner of Zen Buddhism, which shows itself in her day-to-day routines.

"Fishing" reminds us of the antiquated practice of storytelling and parent-child sharing.Ms. Hansen's delightful collection is a much-needed resource for building the rapport between mother, father and child and helping us foster values together.Through gentle words and wonderful paintings and pop-ups, her Zen stories provide food for thought and amazement at the simplicity and beauty of life's adventures.

Perhaps over time, you will find your copy of "Fishing" well-used and firmly installed beside other timeless childhood works by the Grimm brothers, the Andersen brothers, Roald Dahl, C.S. Lewis, Italo Calvino (for "Italian Folktales"), Wu Cheng'en (for "Monkey King" or "Journey to the West") and other cherished giants of the tale.A series of tales to be enjoyed by the family. ... Product Description
Joseph Monninger thought the worst when Nellie, his loyal golden retriever, became ill.Home Waters is the story of the road trip that Monninger decided to embark on with Nellie, traveling out West to revisit their favorite mountain haunts and trout streams.Expecting this to be their final excursion together, Monninger maps a course that includes the Wind River Range in Wyoming, the Bighorn River in Montana, and Henry Ford's River in Idaho.

Painting a loving portrait of his canine companion and the joys of fishing, Monninger recalls the life events that Nellie has seen him through and describes how, oblivious to her presumed health problems, Nellie contentedly watches bison at Yellowstone, chases a coyote, and falls head over heels for a Chesapeake retriever named Chunky.Combining the charm of John Steinbeck's Travels with Charley with the unsentimental storytelling of A River Runs Through It, Home Waters is a delightful story of a beautiful friendship--one that is, in the end, renewed rather than ended.

Amazon.com Review
When the author discovers suspicious lumps on his 11-year-oldgolden retriever Nellie, rather than wait for a biopsy and thepossibility of further decline, he decides it's time for one lastgreat road trip. "I knew, lying next to her, that I was frightened formyself at least as much as for Nellie. I needed the steadiness of herdemands, the consistency she brought to my life. I couldn't imaginedays without her. So that night in bed I stayed close to her andwhispered in her ear that she was a good girl, a Frisbee catcher, alake swimmer." Whether or not the lumps are cancerous, the dog thatsaw him through a marriage and a divorce has gotten old. So they packup the truck and make for points west. What transpires next is partelegy, part meditation on interspecies companionship, and part fishingmemoir. Monninger writes lyrically about his bond with an animal andthe landscape while staying true to the picaresque form in a casualmanner that allows minor surprises along the way to gain cumulativepower. Here he is describing the gift bestowed by a bend in the riverafter following Nellie's lead:

Trout rose everywhere Ilooked.... I could not believe my good fortune. As I stood quietly andlistened, I heard the gurgle of water passing over rocks, the soundsnapped to life by the quick surge of trout.... The rings of theirfeeding drifted above them, then disappeared in the water's pull. Iremembered André Gide's line: "Fish die belly-up and rise tothe surface; it's their way of falling."
Friendship, mortality, loneliness, the redemptive qualities of nature--this is theterritory the author drives through with his faithful canine, aterritory that will appeal to dog lovers and fly-fishers alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sad that it's out of print
What a shame that books this worthwhile have to go out of print. In its quiet, unassuming way, I found this to be a classic work of animal-lover's literature.Like at least one other reviewer, I wondered whether I could get through the entire book after reading the first paragraph, which seems to be foretelling a tragedy. But I did, and instead shared something more like a triumph.I will never give up my copy of this book.I hope the used copies available here will be enjoyed by many more people.

4-0 out of 5 stars A charming story about a fly fisherman and his dog
"Home Waters" is a charming story about a fly fisherman and his dog. It is Monninger's memoir and tribute to his dog, Nellie, an eleven-year-old Golden Retriever, who he has recently learned has cancer. He decides to take a road trip from his home in New Hampshire to visit some of his favorite fishing spots in Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana. Monninger takes the reader along for the ride, describing the details of his fishing trips -- where he sets up, which type of bait he uses, how he adjusts his technique to the circumstances -- and how Nellie accompanies him in all he does -- how she sniffs at each stick and stone as she explores a new area, how she snuggles into his sleeping bag on cold nights, how she taught herself to dive under water after him. As he makes his way through the trip, he reminisces about earlier fishing trips and other experiences he and Nellie have shared.

I loved the tone of this book. Monninger has a pleasant, matter-of-fact way of telling a story. I especially liked how he conveyed his simple love and respect for Nellie just in the way he interacted with her and in his reports of their conversations: "I told Nellie we were done for the night. She seemed grateful." Or, "I told her she was a good dog." When Nellie encountered a harvested potato field, she gave her best shot at retrieving the hundreds of potatoes left on the ground, only to be defeated by the magnitude of the task. Monninger says, "I consoled her on the walk back to the truck, telling her we all have such days, then fed and watered her. I told her to lay down on her dog bed and she did." After he returns to his hotel: "When I unhooked Nellie's leash inside the room, she put her nose on the edge of the bed, asking permission to get up. I told her to go ahead, but not to hog the whole thing. She curled at the foot of the bed, tail to nose. I sat besider her and gave her a rub. In a little while she began to snore. I read for awhile, then turned out the light." I especially related to his dilemma when he went fishing at Yellowstone. "The hard part was explaining to Nellie it is against park regulations to take a dog into the back country.... Nellie wasn't pleased with it... and when I locked her in the back of the truck, she whined to come with me. I was firm with her and caved only enough to give her a biscuit."I've never been fly fishing, but I enjoyed Monninger's equally droll explanations of how it works, the strategy (and luck) that goes into it. I think I now understood why "the one that got away" haunts every fisherman.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful story of man, dog, life...
In this memoir, author Joseph Monninger recounts a very special fly-fishing trip with his best friend, eleven-year-old Golden Retriever, Nellie.Nellie has been diagnosed with cancer and Monninger decides to let the illness run its course- but not without one last grand encounter with nature. The pair traverse the country by pickup truck- camping, fishing and otherwise enjoying nature and the company of each other. This is a great book for those who fish because there are lots of references to the techniques and joys of fly-fishing.But the touching glimpses of the bond between man and dog, and of dealing with the curves life throws at us, add memorable depth and make this wonderful story of interest to everyone, fisher-person or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching story of a man and his dog
This is a wonderful story about the relationship between a man and his dog.I've never gone fly fishing but I found the descriptions quite interesting.I felt like I was with Joe and Nellie on their adventues. Very moving! I highly recommend this book to everyone even if you don'thave a dog!

5-0 out of 5 stars An engaging recount of a man's simple but worthy pleasures.
Monninger uses all his senses in his prose. Unassuming details become necessary pieces of a fabulous story about a man's love for his best friend, one that can't verbally reciprocate the bond but shows anappreciation of the author through her patience and obedience. Bravo! ... Read more

Ken Hanley and some very talented contributors like Jeff Solis, Dave Stanley, Katie Howe, and others have fly fished nearly every top water in California. This guide provides readers with all they need to discover the best places to fly fish in the Golden State--saltwater, bass, stealhead, and high mountains. Ken Hanley is certainly the most qualified fly fishermen to pen a NoNonsense fly fishing guide to the state of California. His fly fishing passion has accompanied him throughout his many adventures hiking the peaks in Tibet and the Himalayas and exploring the wilderness of Europe, Mexico, New Zealand, and Asia, but his Northern California home waters are what he knows best.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad but oddly organized
Fly Fishing California does have a lot of good information for different areas in California. The ratings for different areas, recommendations for flies, seasons and other tips are quite useful. It is well written, and efficient with information but still manages to be entertaining. It's a pleasant book to pick up and thumb through and has some fantastic and inspiring photographs.

My one major complaint about the bookis that it's organized alphabetically rather than by region and there is no map to serve as an overview of where the different sites are.Either solution would have been a huge help in using this book. The first three spots are Alamitos bay (Los Angeles Area), American River (Sacramento Area), and Barrett Lake (San Diego Area), so it really jumps around the state. Each individual map has a picture of where the site is in the state, and there's a map at the end of the book to show the highway system for California, but if you're not already familiar with the locations, there's no way to find out what's in your area without looking through the book.It seems like it would have been an easy thing to include in the book which would have made it much more usable.

Aside from that though it's a handy book to get you started.

4-0 out of 5 stars No Fluff
Pretty good book.No frills, good maps, nice pictures. Not bad for even some "coffee table" reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best published California information
Having read past Ken Hanley books on fly fishing, I have come to appreciate his wit and style. This book is very descriptive of each location including a map with highlighted areas, recommended types of flys and equipment for best results and any specific regulations, restrictions, etc.

Being tough to find good locations in Southern California, this is a good book to start with. ... Read more

The Olympic Peninsula has some of the most well-known major steelhead rivers in the world, and Doug Rose has been fly-fishing on them for decades.

This book is a great fishing guide for the area, but it goes so much deeper than that. Rose also discusses the wonderful history of the region, the famous fly-fishers and tiers, conservation issues, and special points of interest. The rivers covered in-depth, include: the Queets, Bogachiel, Hoh, and Quinalt, just to name a few. If you fish for steelhead, you need this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Color of Winter
This is a really, really good book. And is very fun to read. You learn a lot about the history of the OP, and obviously a great deal about the fly fishing for steelhead in that area.I find some of the most interesting parts of this book are the chapters about the history of certain rivers and fisheries, and other subjects.Deus Ex Machina, Maximum Sustained Harvest, and The Creeks are a few examples. This is a great book, and so are Doug Roses' other books as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars steelhead fly fishing on the Olympic Peninsula
The book had a lot of fishing stories but not much on how to fish for steel head.
My favorite was Fishing the Hoh River. More how to & where in that book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful, Colorful, Story Of The Steelhead

Doug Rose has authored an authoritative, entertaining, and artful narrative about one of the most amazing gamefish -- the sea run rainbow trout known as The Steelhead -- and one of its most pristine habitats: Washington state's Olympic Peninsula.

Rose writes in a colorful narrative style that brings the Olympic Peninsula's winter palette to life. He also introduces the reader to the people who live their lives in pursuit of, and in support of, this great sport fish. Within the story he weaves the important ecological issues regarding the management -- and mismanagement -- of this wild, fragile, natural resource. A series of color plates in the middle of the book bring the reader even closer to the subject.

This book is a fine read: a "literary fishing book" in the tradition of Roderick Haig-Brown and Harry Middleton; a book that should be -- and will be -- read and reread by lovers of fly lines and literary lines alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic testimonial to the Olympic rivers and their fish
Doug Rose has written a beautiful tribute to the West End rivers and the spectacular fish of Washington's Olympic Peninsula.Three parts conservation, one part natural history, with a bit of how-to fly fishing; Rose's passion for his subject comes through on every page. What makes this read particularly enjoyable is how easily he makes good writing seem effortless.

Rose comes across as a dedicated naturalist and astute observer of riverine habitats. These observations extend to the Peninsula's geography, climate, local history, local Tribes and conservation politics.Absent is the grandious bravado of many angling writers and their simple 'catch-and-tell' naratives. He presents solid arguments for protecting wild fish, particularly the remaining wild winter steelhead, from harvest and further habitat destruction. Most notably, he shares with us what these fish and rivers mean to him on an intimate level. Rose paints an image of the Olympic rain forest landscape that is both unique and precious; and outside National Park boundaries, remains in desparate need of protection.

I began reading this book to learn more about winter steelhead fishing from a technical perspective. While there are several sections relating to technical aspects, they are few and somewhat short on detail.Illustrations are limited to so-so quality photographs of West End riverscapes and many (but not all) of the flies described throughout the text. One small complaint concerns a number of typos remaining that the editor failed to catch.Admittedly though, my gripes are nominal.

I highly recommend this read for those wanting to enjoy an eloquant tribute to the remarkable anadromous fisheries of the Olympic Peninsula rivers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I am a Arizona born Fly Angler who endorses this book.
Reading Arizona Trout Streams, I thought my spots were being exposed. But as I got into the feel of the writers tone, I felt as if I were reading something written by a friend who was sharing his secrets. The book ispunctuated by Arizona Fly Anglers names, friends of the authors who wrotethe book. A nice touch. Certainly most people like to see their name inprint, especially a book on our subject. Organized by geographics, thepages move from one stream to another in good form. Not all streams arelisted, just the ones that are well known, and a few that aren't. One of myfavorite streams is listed. The author gives it a poor rating, and for thisI am happy. It seems that his idea of a small stream rating and mine do notclosely match. That is ok by me, life is not black and white. There aresome streams that I haven't even heard of. I know the area where theydrain, but I haven't heard of them through my information channels or in mywanderings. I have a log, even one a little more in depth than I show youonline. I check the insect hatches in my notes, and the hatches listed inArizona Trout Streams is dead on. My knowledge of entomology is limited, but what I do know, I can say that it certainly matches the book. That myfriends is a great feeling because I feel so lost when it comes to theLatin part of flye angling. I would have paid more for color pictures, butthe black and white photographs are excellent. The pictures in the booklook like ones that we have all taken. For instance, the Haigler Creekphotograph is what I am talking about. A good look at what the streamreally is. There is a section on Lee's Ferry that has been fullyresearched. The history of Trout strains at this tailwater are discussedalong with flys and techniques used. I am impressed that I could havelearned so much from a paperback book written on my subject. (my ego, hasbeen deflated! just kidding.) Again, what a great book. Arizona TroutStreams is a must own for every Arizona Fly Angler and anyone who wants toknow more about our Trout Streams. If you are thinking about coming toArizona, go and purchase this book. It will make your knowledge of ourstreams match even some of us who have fished here our whole lives. Thankyou Charles Meck and John Rohmer for making such a great book. I have beensweating it for a long time, and now I know that I am indeed learning manythings, along with some new streams. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Steelhead presentations
I have been fishing for steelhead for over 30 years and found this to be an excellent book, especially the very complete descriptions on different presentations from wet-fly swings to dead-drift to fishing with indicators. My home waters are the Deschutes so I am pretty much stuck in a rut fishing wet fly and greased line swings with some sink-tip during the day. However, I am recently retired and getting into winter steelhead fishing and find I have a lot to learn.I have enjoyed many of the other steelhead books by Combs, Hogan, etc. but found the descriptions on the different presentations the most complete in Larison's book.He also includes a nice collection of some different and very effective steelhead flies not included in other books such as the Lifter pattern.John's father does a beautiful job with the photography and John's style of writing is easy and enjoyable to read. The bottom line: the book is loaded with information and will definitely improve my steelheading skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Steelheader
This is an excellent book on the subject of steelheading. It has a ton of excellent information that is applicable to all steelhead waters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Good information, easy to read. Hard to find this kind of sportsman with experience that can also teach and share his knowledge in a way that is easy to understand. I guess it helps that he's a professor at a college when he's not fishing. Great gift book too.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have been WAITING for this book!

Product Description
This 148-page book by fly-fishing author Bill Sunderland covers the entire Sierra Nevada, from Lake Almanor in the north to the Kern River drainage in the south, and details hundreds of rivers, streams and lakes that offer good trout fishing throughout the region. It updates and expands an earlier version of Fly Fishing the Sierra Nevada published in 1999. Among other things, this new edition adds a chapter on the lower Owens River near Bishop and much greater detail on the Yuba River between Grass Valley and Marysville, both of which have come on in recent years as blue ribbon trout fisheries. It also features more than 100 spectacular color photographs by Rick E. Martin, and 15 topographical maps to help anglers get to their destination. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Words of Wisdom"
Landon Mayer's book "Sight Fishing for Trout" teaches readers exactly what the title says and then some.Landon's ability to see fish is extraordinary but his passion for teaching others how to sight and catch trophy trout is overwhelming. After reading Landon's previous book "How to Catch the Biggest Trout of Your Life," it seems Landon was only breaking the surface with his supernatural fishing abilities. The book is easy to read and is filled with pictures that help the reader learn find more fish.Since reading both his books, I have consistently caught bigger fish and spend more time reaching for a net than ever before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sight Fishing for Trout
One of the best books in my library. I will use this as a reference for many years to come. Landon takes a very difficult topic to explain in words and delivers. The pictures truly add to the education. Any level of fly fisherman can learn from this book. Nice work Landon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for bluegill lovers
I never thought I could learn more about this seemingly "easy to catch" fish until I read this book. As an avid fly fisherman who enjoys catching everthing from bluegill to bass, this was a rare find. It is thorough in it's description of different watersheds and seasonal activity for these pugnacious fighters. A great addition to any warmwater fly fisherman's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tons of information for a "small" fish!
If you're after some light tackle excitement this is the book for you. Everything you ever wanted to know about bluegill, and then some, is in this book. The Wilsons cover everything from gearing up, to flies (with recipes) they've had success with, to where one might find these fish based on conditions and temperature. Excellent book for the beginner and more experienced fisherman alike. It's a light and pleasant read but is sure to teach everyone something about those big blegills and the water they inhabit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject
Without a doubt this is THE best book on the subject....with the why...and how to tie the Bully Bug....THE best bluegill fly there is (and also a darn good bass and crappie fly!).

An easy and entertaining read that will help you catch more and bigger bluegills no matter how long you have been fishing for them. Strongly recommended for any level fly angler.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book
I love this book.Definetly one the most readible, enjoyable and insightful books about fly fishing I have ever read.It covers only bluegill, but I have applied alot of its advice to many species of bream.I foudn the story explaining the orgins of the Blue Gill Spider very entertaining.I cannot recommend this book enough. If you fish for blue gills, other sunfish, or go down to central america for cichlids, there is a whole lot here that applies to a variety of small freshwater species. Also, the explanation of what makes productive habitats is fascinating.I do not make reviews often, but this book is great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Luv Them Bee-you-tee-ful Vi-ber-ray-shuns

Authors Terry and Roxanne Wilson evidence an almost evangelistic enthusiasm in this book as they tout the superior experience of pursuing wild and wily bluegills with a fly.

This includes prescribing fly fishing for bream (in the South pronounced "brim") as corrective action for a wayward high school student (one of the authors is a public school teacher). After the session, the otherwise utterly uninvolved teenager exclaimed, "I jus' luv them bee-you-tee-ful vi-ber-ray-shuns".

Presumably what he was referring to was the sensation of a bluegill tugging at the other end of light weight tackle.

Anyway this is a gem of a book - well written, fact packed, and utterly fun to read.

Here are some snippets to whet your appetite (whether you're a fisherperson or not):

* Whether walking the banks of a small farm pond armed with rod, reel, and a box of flies, or prospecting a major reservoir with a high powered bluegill boat, electronic locator, temperature gauge, bag full of rods and reels, and stacks of fly boxes and accessories, you are embarking on a grand adventure of discovery...

* Fly fishers inevitably acquire a considerable arsenal of flies and a wide assortment of accessory items, each of which acquires indispensable status... This requires an equipment carrier. A fly-fisher's vest soon becomes his most personalized piece of equipment. Only the owner knows which little pocket contains the needed item.

* Why game fish will suddenly abandon one predictable feeding pattern, even when the food form appears to be abundant, then select something else remains a mystery. It's just one of these delicious little puzzles that makes our sport so fascinating.

* During this season (dog days of summer), even veteran anglers can find large bluegill fishing a humbling experience.

* No aquatic inhabitant is accustomed to seeing a brightly colored T-shirt bouncing along its shore. Similarly, highly reflective watches and sunglasses also send a signal of caution into the bluegill's lair.

* The only negative aspect of float tubing involves that scourge of the pond - mud. Even floatable flippers can become hopelessly stuck in gooey mud. Velcro straps, designed to prevent losing a detached flipper, are no guarantee that the owner won't be left wallowing around like a one-legged hippopotamus.

* These experiences dictate that we remain open minded, experiment frequently, and above all let the bluegills tell us what action they prefer.

So relax, enjoy, and always, always listen to the bluegills. ... Read more

After 35 years of not fishing I found this book invaluable and brought me up to date on equipment, regulations, as well as what lakes and streams were producing. Hats off to this author. William Collins

5-0 out of 5 stars Fishing here in the State of Washington!
Terry Rudnick has one of the best jobs on this planet! He fishes the state and writes about it to make a living!Wow!If you live here or not and want to know the inside scoop about fishing in Washington State, this is the book. From fishing on a holding pond for the Grand Coulee Dam (Banks Lake), Curlew Lake near Republic to the Seep Lakes at Pot Holes, you should read this before you load up your RV and your fishing gear.
Terry knows all the experts, like say Dave over at Coulee Playland on Banks Lake.
One reminder:If you are out of state, don't violate the Washington State Fishing Laws or you will be in a WORLD OF HURT.Read the Fishing Regulations carefully before throwing a line in the water. The regs are complex and in many cases vary as to the stream, river or lake you're fishing in!On line go to: http://wdfw.wa.gov. Keeping a 14-inch bass is not worth the pain and suffering you will experience if they catch you!Otherwise, welcome and have fun!

He focuses on fish and economy.
Travel books boil down to: Why make your own mistakes, when the author has already made them for us, and shares his knowledge with us?
This book will save you a lot of trouble and make your trip more enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars A practical guide for car-based fishing for salmon in Alaska
This book has really grown on me.When I first received it I was a little disappointed thinking it was a little light on content. As I've thought more about planning my own Alaska fishing vacation, I now value the author's pragmatic style. He tells you with detail and precision how to get the most out of a car-based excursion fishing for salmon. From what and how to pack, to specific milepost markers for the best fishing at specific times, to how to get your catch home, it's all there.Be aware that this book is ONLY about car-based fishing and ONLY about fishing for salmon; also many of the areas identified as hotspots are very popular and will be crowded (the author uses the local phrase "combat fishing" to describe such situations).

5-0 out of 5 stars Sternberg is Always Great
I have all but a few of Dick Sternberg's books. They are all well illustrated and very informative. The photography is amazing at times.I have read these books since the early 1990s.Now my 14 grandchildren read them with a great deal of interest when we are at our lake home. They often ask "Grandpa, can I take this book home and return it on our next visit to the lake?"Interest is really generated when the child reads the book to his/her ability and then asks "Grandpa, can you take me out so I can catch a Northern Pike?"My grandson Nick asked me that, we hopped in the boat, and he caught a 33 inch pike after only 30 minutes. He said "That book was great."I said "Nick, this doesn't happen all the time."

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Broad to be Used - Pro or Novice
For the past month, I have been obsessed with learning all I could about Bass fishing.Growing up a Trout fisherman, the techniques used to catch bass seem like a whole other world. After exhausting online databases of articles, tips and pointers, I ordered this book along with several others.Although I have only a few actual bass fishing outings to draw upon, compared to the other books I have read, this one provided me with very little of use.For beginners, it is too broad - lacking the elementary details useful for those just learning the art of bass fishing. For those with more experience, there is little that is valuable or helpful to take your fishing to the next level. For newbies, I'd recommend Bass Wisdom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Orvis Ultimate Book of Fly Fishing
This a great book to help those beginning to explore fly fishing as well as those who have overcome the urge to give it up when they encounter the frustration of not being able to cast perfectly on the first try and have been fly fishing for years. Not sure how many copies of this book that I have purchased in the past but at least six. I have given them to several people who were like all of us at one time, just beginning fly fishing. Fly fishing is like most other worthwhile endeavors that require some effort on the part of the participant. This book gives the basics in an easy to understand language for the beginner as well as a great resource for those like me who need revisit "now just how is that done" again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the basic knowledge you need
If you like to read about fly fishing, this is a good basic primer on technique and equipment. I do find however, that if you search around a little you can find all you need to know online. In the end you have to get out on the stream and learn first hand what works best for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Orvis Ultimate Book of Fly Fishing
What a great source of information on fly fishing. Easy to read and follow directions on alot of fly fishing techniques. This book gives generous photo support as well. Recommend this book to all levels of fly fishermen.

5-0 out of 5 stars illustrated manual on all aspects of fly fishing
The visual elements of color photos of fishermen, flies, and fishes, and detailed illustrations of fly-fishing techniques discussed in many of the 34 chapters by expert fly fishermen make this fishing manual particularly informative as well as attractive. The four-page detailed Index in smaller print is another reason for the manual's particular relevance and usefulness for fishermen. The contents and writing evidence that the editor and the several authors know their prospective readers. With their identification with them, editor and authors know the challenges and questions on fly fishermen's minds, and also understand the allure and satisfactions of this sport. In "How Trout Feed," the editor in one of his articles advises readers, "If water temperatures rise above seventy degrees F. in summer, both insect hatches and trout feeding dwindle." Lou Tabory tells "How to Read a Beach" in salt-water fly fishing for bluefish. The first eleven articles are on the general subjects of casting and flies. Subsequent sections deal with fishing for trout, steelhead (salmon), and bass, with a closing section on salt-water fishing.
