Book Description
A raw, powerful first novel, The Football Factory centres on Tom Johnson, a reasoned 'Chelsea hooligan' who represents a disaffected society operating by brutal rules. We are shown the realities of life — social degradation, unemployment, racism, casual violence, excessive drink and bad sex — and, perhaps more importantly, how they fall into a political context of surveillance, media manipulation and division. Graphic and disturving, occasionally very funny, and deeply affecting throughout, The Football Factory is a vertiginous rush of adrenaline — the most authentic book yet on the so-called English Disease. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Disturbing
Brilliant and disturbing depiction of a contemporary working-class Londoner. The novel portrays a bleak England which has little to offer its poor, white natives. The central character-who one imagines must be loosely based on the author-is a nasty man, whose one outlet is football hooliganism. A Chelsea fan, he defines his existence not around actual matches and scores so much as around prospective and actual pre and post-match violence. The book seems to suggest that for him, and his ilk, society has nothing to offer and he must retreat to the camaraderie of his fighting friends to find any release and meaning in his existence. The chapters alternate between focusing on the main character on match days, and peripheral characters (some only barely related to the novel at all) and slices of London life. Despite the very raw descriptions of violence and sex, the writing is too deft, and the message too sharp for the book to be considered a mere cult novel. King's subsequent novels, Headhunters, England Away, Human Punk, and White Trash are all equally vital-if not as raw-reading. Great non-fiction companions to this book are Colin Ward's classic of football hooligans, Steaming In, and Nick Danziger's depressing travelogue of England, Danziger's Britain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for a Youth Football Head Coach
I don't know Derek Wade personally, but several years ago I first "met" him through an Amazon book review.I was so impressed with his review that I did a search on his name and found out that he had a web site.At the time I was not coaching, but I was closely following my older son's progress in Youth football.I was trying to fill in the holes in my son's skill set, that his coaches were not able to cover because of their restrictions of practice time and ability to spend one on one time with the players.I soon realized I had good tactical knowledge of the skills required for individual football positions, but hardly any strategic knowledge of a football team from a coaches view.Derek's website http://www.fbforyouth.com/ contained tons of the knowledge he had gathered and shifted through on his similar quest for a strategic knowledge. His writing style was written in "Conversational" manner, where the emphasis is on communicating ideas in an understandable manner, as if having a conversation with an acquaintance, as opposed to trying to sound like an expert.

Chapter 1 History:This really filled in a lot of the holes in my knowledge. In other writings (or in my son's Madden Football) I would read references to offensive systems or defenses systems and I could only guess about them (ie. West Coast offense, 4-3 defense, etc.).Coach Wade explains these system with just enough detail and history to understand them from a 10,000 foot view.I couldn't put the book down while reading this. Then Coach Wade goes into a 5,000 foot view on the rules of football. This is an easy read as the entire section is labeled with bold headings so a person can skip what they don't want to read, and not worry about missing something they want to read.

Chapters 2 & 3 Video & book Reviews:There are a lot of coaching videos on the market. They are expensive. Most of them seem to be "Garage Projects".I agonize when I am trying to find the right video to fit my present need because it will cost a person tens of dollars to find out what you bought is not what you wanted. There needs to be more video & book reviews from trusted sources, so I was thankful for Coach Wade's insight. Coach Wade also has a few more book reviews on his web site.

Chapter 4 Film Study: Coach Wade makes it clear this is time intensive, but has big payback.I have been doing this for several years and I very much agree. As a dad, I would film a close up of the line where my son was, then slow it down to about 0.4 speed. That is VERY entertaining to watch as it emphasizes the hand to hand combat of the front line and has been VERY helpful to my son.Lots of good lessons learned in this section.Coaches should measure their resources and allocate them to film study accordingly.

Chapter 5 Dealing with Parents:Good philosophy and "lessons learned" in this chapter.

Chapter 6 Selecting Staff: Good philosophy and "lessons learned" in this chapter.

Chapter 7 Practice Preparation: Good philosophy and "lessons learned" in this chapter.

Chapter 8 Practice Plan: This chapter is the biggest in the book.Coach Wade takes a person through weeks of individual practices.I had to keep in mind that Coach Wade talks from his present coaching assignment at the Jr. high level, but I felt there was lots of good philosophy and lessons learned to help me at the K-4th level.I just finished coaching K-2 graders, all first time players, and my team would not have been able to progress as fast as the outline, but my older son's 5-6th grade team would have been able too.I will be coaching 3-4 graders and I plan on incorporating a lot of Coach Wade's practice philosophy here.I am presently rewriting my future practice plan accordingly.

Appendix 1 Misc Drills: Having this many drills laid out by subject area, with diagrams, and field tested is really really nice.

Appendix 2 Practice Plan: This is what I am referencing while I rewrite my future practice plan.

Appendix 3 Helpful Charts: If you are a visual person like I am, having things laid out in forms and organized into relationships is very helpful, but it takes time and a good form evolves from its initial concept to its working state. This section allows a person to skip the evolution stage and get right to the working stage.

Appendix 4 Letter to Parents: Interesting.

Appendix 5 The Black Lion Award: Interesting.

Appendix 6 Concussions: Very helpful.I plan on taking this seriously.

Appendix 7 Football Terms: Very helpful and interesting to read.

Index: Even this shows that some time was put into it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Right to the point
I've been coaching youth football for several years. Many coaches have styles and techniques - some good, many bad.

This book gets right to the point and offers an all around complete coaching program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the New Head Coach!
Impact is a great book for the new or old Head Coach and assistants. The book gives a head coach everything they need to start off the season on the right foot with parents, assistant coaches and kids. The detailed practice plans were exactly what I had been looking for.The offensive examples describe in the book are the double wing, with which Coach Wade has had a lot of success. This book is not an offensive or defensive play book and it was not the intent of the author to be one.You will have to get this in his other future books or from other sources.Coach Wade does point to a lot of great resources where these can be found and to ones that should be avoided. If you're new to coaching youth football and searching for the right plan or if you have a team but you need a better system, this is the book for you!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book by far was the best football coaching related book i've read by far. Coach Wade was very informing and intoned to what new coaches need to be successful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a Rookie Coach
If you are a rookie Coach (like me), and don't want to look like one this is a great book. It is very informative and gives you a step by step plan on how to organize your team. Includes Practice plans, Scheduals..everything you need.I am only halfway through the book and what I have read so far is worth more than I paid for the book.Highly Recomended...Thanks Coach Wade, for the great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Conditioning Book; A MUST Have For Football Atheletes!!!
I have looked a while for a great conditioning program for football players and when I found this book, I was amazed by the detail, quality, and effort obvoiusly put into it by the authors which made it a great conditioning book for High School football players and beyond. The authors incorporated not only the physical ways in which to get better but mental ways as well which are both important for conditioning as well as the successful winning of football games by not only being ready on the outside but also believing and knowing you can do it on the inside. The whole conditioning program is, when performed with the best potential and effort, a challenging one that will more than likely get you the preperation you need. These authors, coaches of the University of Nebraska football team which is famous for this strenghth and conditioning program, first introduce you to factors that build on one another to make a great football player and then give a very complete program of conditioning and training including a nutrition and shopping list for best atheletes to use for great energy. The structure of the book and organization is exceptional and it literaly gives you all the information you will ever need on how to prepare for football in any aspect. It contains specific exersises for speed, flexibility, strenghth, and more, and contains workout plans, inconclusive descripiton, and even helpful football tips in the process.
I would strongly recommend this book to any football athelete looking to prepare for football through conditioning at any level because of the very helpful information you will find in this book. I guarantee this book will never sit on your shelf too long if you get it because you will be refering to it constantly. I know I made the right choice by buying this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best
The book "Complete Conditioning for Football" is a must for any football player. Inside includes performance needs; conditiong principles; testing, evluating, and goal setting; flexibility training; lifting techniques; speed drills; agility drills; nutrition and rest; and last but not least conditioning workouts and programs.

Performance Needs:

This chapter includes a performance pyramid which if followed can lead to "making the play", or success on the football field. It includes character, conditioning, ability, practice, game, and with the top brick, performance. Also it breaks down each of the components, exa. Character- belief, resolve, discipline, courage... and gives a descriptive explanation for each of them also.

Conditioning Principles:

This chapter guides you in developing and implementing a program to allow you to peak the four athletic indicators of speed, agility, power, and endurance. It breaks down and explains the principles of specificity, overload, and periodization.

Testing, Evaluating, and Goal Setting:

This chapter outlines step-by-step procedues on how to safely test and evaluate athletes' fitness and athletic abilities so ou can develop the objectives and specifics of your conditioning program. Here it gives some tests, such as vertical jump test, pro agility run test, 10- and 40- yard dash test, 300-yard shuttle run test, and even height, weight, and waist measurement tests. It also gives you percentile ranking charts of all the positions in high school and college. With your test results you can see where you rank among those in the 10-yard and 40-yard dashes, pro agility run, and the vertical jump. Percentile ranks are from 5-100.

Flexibility Training:

This chapter gives you the proper warm-up routine (high knees, heel ups, ect.), stretching routine (partner stretches), and mobility drills that should be done during the conditioning workouts (warm-ups and stretching before, mobility drills after the workout).

Lifting Techniques:

Provides valuable information on proper technique of all the lifts, to warming-up, spotters, breathing, and so on and so forth. Strength training exercises include: explosive, complementary, base strenght, and specialty. Not many weight rooms that I know of have the complementary, or "ground basedjammer", so in the workouts in the back of the book give replacements for these lifts if the jammer is not available.

Speed Drills:

Included are 29 drills for speed (2), acceleration (9), plyometrics (9), and resisted speed (9). Also gives the proper sprint technique especially used for testing the 40.

Agility Drills:

Included are 58 drills for improving your agility. The drills include ropes (8), bags (15), backpedal drills (11), cones (12), line drills (6), and jump rope drills (6).

Nutrition and Rest:

Basically describes all the foods you should eat to make it short. This is a chapter you should allow as many people as possible to read, since without nutrition, athletic performance is low. Also gives a grocery shopping list with all the foods listed under the vitamins and minerals it has in them (example: almonds, corn oil, ect. are listed under vitamin e) and a section of drinking fluids and getting plenty of sleep.

Conditioning Workouts and Programs:

Guides you to building a successful conditioning program. Lists all the speed/agility drills and notes which drills are appropriate for which positions. Included are sample programs in development and peak phases for the positions. Also included in this chapter is the lifting programs for the beginner (base, development, in-season), intermediate (base, development, peak, in-season), and advanced (base, development, peak, in-season). This is an absolutely outstanding weight program in my opinion, with lifting days on monday, tuesday, thursday, and friday.

All in all, this is the complete book for any football player looking to get in great shape for the next season. It is mainly a year-round program by giving types of workouts (base, ect.) for each month of the year in which to apply the right workout to. I also recommend the book "52-Week Football Training" to combine the exercises in the books if you want a more variedprogram. I suggest taking the time to looking into "Jumping Into Plyometrics" for a plyometric program to add into your schedule and "Play Football the NFL Way" for techniques and tips to help you excell in the game of football.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book helped me greatly
This is a great book because the program's strengths are based on what you want to do for football. If you want to get big and strong to play oline/dline then it has a stellar weight program. But if you are looking to develop speed and quickness it has a series of drills for that too.You just have to concentrate on the area that suits your needs the most.Excellent description of all the drills and excersies as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative Read...
Gives a in-depth view on football specific training and is helpful in developing a custom program for yourself.All-in-all worth the read.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best!
From the school that really started weight traininging in college football, Coach Arthur has done a great job of setting forward the principles that we should use in designing the programs that we use to build our athletes. You need this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Football Fugitive
Matt Christopher was a semi professional player before he became a writer! He was very poor. He played baseball with a broomstick and an old tennis ball when he was a child. He made the bases with flat stones. Matt's full name was Matthew Frederick Christopher.
Matt wrote hundreds of books and my favorite book of all is Football Fugitive. It describes plays that they did in games. Larry is main character in the story. I am really in to this book because I play football too. Larry meets Yancey Foote who plays in the NFL. He plays on Packers. Yancey gets in trouble. Larry's dad is a lawyer who helps him.
Larry plays for the Digits a local team! He is star of his team. He has plays that are similar to my plays. This book is the best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why this book is good for you
This book is called Matt Christopher Football Fugitive by Matthew F. Christopher. It's about a boy how wants to be like his role model. It's also about a boy that needs self-confidence.In the beginning of the book he is upset at his role model Yancey Foote, because he doesn't write back. He is also upset at his dad, because is never spends time with him only in the office.

5-0 out of 5 stars A goodbook about Football
This is a book about a guy that plays football for the PACKERS, and a kid that wants to be just like him. They both write each other letters back and forth, but the guy beats a person up that weighs a lot less thanhimand goes to court for it.At the end of the story they become BEST freinds, but they still write each other letters. They both have a good life after that.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book Review
The reason I chose this book is because I like to play and watch football. I thought the book would be about a kid who did something wrong and gets in trouble for it or a suspect in a crime. The plot was a kid named Larry who gets these phone calls from someone and worries about it and doesn't want to tell his dad who just got out of jail. He doesn't do good in school and on the field.

The main character is Larry, a student and a football player. The setting is in a school and on a football field. The story begins when Larry's dad gets out of jail. Then he gets these phone calls from someone he really knows. Next, he gets a letter or note saying "You Stink" which means he stinks in football because he drops and fumbles a lot.

In conclusion the book was good and I gave it 3 stars. This book would be a good book for everybody.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who's Going to help Yancey Foote
Larry really wishes his dad could come to his games, but his dad is too busy with his law practice. Yancey Foote is his pro football hero. Yancey Foote sends letters to Larry almost every day. One day Larry didn't get any letters so Larry found out that Yancey Foote was in legal trouble. Will Larry's dad ever help Yancey Foote or will he be too busy with his law practice? If you want to know what happens you should read Football Fugitive. ... Read more

Play Football the NFL Way is a great guide for young people getting into coaching football at all levels.

Great guide on technique based drills.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book even for beginners
While I've been coaching youth football for a couple of years, I thought I would get the book to see what the pros are taught. Its a great book new coaches and for the fundamentals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sound Stuff
Very good techniques for the beginning football player. Mostly well explained, although some things don't make sense without a point of reference for a beginner (what's your outside hip?).
Plenty of information for every position.

3-0 out of 5 stars Other Books
As the title says, this is a position by position breakdown of useful things to practice and learn for the game of American Football. With an emphasis on the younger player or hack beginner type it isn't too bad a book to have a look at for erstwhile players and coaches to gain a better understanding of some simple fundamentals.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS A STEAL!!!!!!!!!!!! AT ANY PRICE!!!!!!!!
"Play Football the NFL way", has lots and lots of Pictures, drills, coaching terminology, techniques, diagrams, and a step by step guide on how to play every position. It is easy to read and well written. You will not get lost trying to read this book even if your football knowledge is limited.

"Play Football the NFL way" encompasses the Quarterback play, running backs, receivers, offensive line, defensive line, linebackers, defensive backs, and the kicking game. Everything you need to know to teach defensive or offensive basic techniques.

This book has too much information for any new coach to master in any one season. Work with the position/drills that you feel comfortable with and save the others for a later time. Learn a little teach a little. Take your time there is no hurry.

Book Description

“Keith Dunnavant’s triumph is that he takes us into the heart of Alabama, into the darkness and the light, and there we see Joe Namath, Kenny Stabler, Ray Perkins, and their band of brothers play football for Bear Bryant the way life should be lived, at full throttle, indomitably.”
---Dave Kindred, author of Sound and Fury: Two Powerful Lives, One Fateful Friendship

The Missing Ring is more than a football book. It is both a story of a changing era and of an extraordinary team on a championship quest.

Very few institutions in American sports can match the enduring excellence of the University of Alabama football program. Across a wide swath of the last century, the tradition-rich Crimson Tide has claimed twelve national championships, captured twenty-five conference titles, finished thirty-four times among the country’s top ten, and played in fifty-three bowl games.

Especially dominant during the era of the legendary Paul “Bear” Bryant, the larger-than-life figure who towered over the landscape like no man before or since, Alabama entered the 1966 season with the chance to become the first college football team to win three consecutive national championships. Every aspect of Bryant’s grueling system was geared around competing for the big prize each and every year, and in 1966 the idea of the threepeat tantalized the players, pushing them toward greatness. Driven by Bryant’s enthusiasm, dedication, and perseverance, players were made to believe in their team and themselves. Led by the electrifying force of quarterback Kenny “Snake” Stabler and one of the most punishing defenses in the storied annals of the Southeastern Conference, the Crimson Tide cruised to a magical season, finishing as the nation’s only undefeated, untied team. But something happened on the way to the history books.

The Missing Ring is the story of the one that got away, the one that haunts Alabama fans still, and native Alabamian Keith Dunnavant takes readers deep inside the Crimson Tide program during a more innocent time, before widespread telecasting, before scholarship limitations, before end-zone dances. Meticulously revealing the strategies, tactics, and personal dramas that bring the overachieving boys of 1966 to life, Dunnavant’s insightful, anecdotally rich narrative shows how Bryant molded a diverse group of young men into a powerful force that overcame various obstacles to achieve perfection in an imperfect world.

Set against the backdrop of the civil rights movement, the still-escalating Vietnam War, and a world and a sport teetering on the brink of change in a variety of ways, The Missing Ring tells an important story about the collision between football and culture. Ultimately, it is this clash that produces the Crimson Tide’s most implacable foe, enabling the greatest injustice in college football history.
“Keith Dunnavant has written yet another fabulous book about the fabled Alabama football program. You will be amazed at how one of the great injustices in the history of college football cost them their rightful place in history. And you just thought the system was screwed up now.”
---Jim Dent, author of The Junction Boys

“Keith Dunnavant nails it: all the sacrifices the 1966 Alabama team made to win three national championships in a row, and how we were robbed at the ballot box.”
---Jerry Duncan, one of the boys of 1966

“Dunnavant infuses reportage and passion into a tale that every Alabamian of a certain age knows: For all the crying about Penn State in 1969, Penn State in 1994, or Auburn in 2004, no team ever got shafted the way the 1966 Crimson Tide did. It’s all here: the churning legs, the churning stomachs, and the dreaded gym classes where Bear Bryant’s boys made the sacrifices he demanded in order to become champions. They conquered their opponents on the field, but proved to be no match for the politics of the day off the field. The ’66 Tide is still waiting for the Missing Ring. Thanks to Dunnavant, we don’t have to.”
---Ivan Maisel, senior writer, ESPN.com, and co-author of A War in Dixie

“Absolutely stunning. The Missing Ring left me breathless. Keith Dunnavant has proven again why he is one of America’s greatest sports authors and historians. With so much having been written about Bryant and Alabama, I had my doubts going into this book that there was something I didn’t know or hadn’t read. Yet Dunnavant has managed to strike gold with The Missing Ring in every way and shape imaginable. His quiet prose goes down as effortlessly as bourbon and branch water. Fans of college football will marvel at his painstaking research. Dunnavant turned the clock back forty years and it was 1966 all over again. The pain and the glory, the pride and the prejudice, all brought to life in the pages of this extraordinary book.”

3-0 out of 5 stars The Missing Logic
The first two-thirds of this work provides an interesting and insightful tale of how a magical coach molded an amazing bunch of overachievers into a team that nearly won a third consecutive national championship in 1966. A nice book on an interesting piece of sports history. But after describing the crucial 10-10 tie between Michigan St. and Notre Dame, the author begins to sound like the president of the University of Alabama booster club and the League of South. (Note: the author's bio on the back cover, at least in the paperback version, fails to mention that he attended Alabama). He leaves out facts that might cloud his thesis that Alabama, and the South in general, was put upon by northern liberals with a superiority complex. His use of sports facts is selective as well. For instance, while complaining that Notre Dame was awarded the national championship in 1966 before the bowls games were played, he fails to point out that two of the Alabama national championships ('64 and'73) were won in years in which they were awarded the titles before LOSING bowl games to Texas and Notre Dame. He actually mentions the fact that Notre Dame beat Alabama after the '73 season,he just doesn't mention his unjustly persecuted Crimson Tide had already been awarded at least a partial national championship. In general, the author seeks to re-enforce the belief by some Southern sports fans that Notre Dame and non-Southern teams have gotten "gift" championships over the years, while Alabama hasn't gotten what it deserves. Alabama has been awarded the national championship at least a dozen times. It has a glorious football history, much of it built by the masterful motivation of Bear Bryant. For two-thirds of this book, the author tells that tale. His work could have done without the whining, preaching and cliched pop sociology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bama Grad weighs in.
Admittedly, this book is regional in nature, appealing to the 'Bama fan of any age.Growing up in Birmingham, attending The University, and remaining a loyal Tide fan, I found this book hard to put down.It is a quick read.Being generally aware of this sequence of events during the 1966 season, I was enthralled at the background and behind the scenes information offered by the author.

The focus on Coach Bryant and his harshness in molding championship football teams has been well documented, but what strikes me in this book is the contrast in his admonition to do everything one can to be a champion and then letting the polls sort things out in a just manner. In this instance racism, regionality, prejudice, and primitive media capabilities prevented a true NCAA Football Champion.I felt sympathy for MY team...having done all to achieve a goal and STILL not getting the prize.A lifelong lesson at such a tender age!
I have read most of the books about Bear Bryant and Alabama football, but by far, this is the most entertaining of them all.If you are an Alabama fan or a follower of college football, I highly recommend this book. Those who could care less about SEC football and the sport in general might be better served by another subject.I would have scored this book Five Stars had it not been so regional in nature.I however loved every page.Roll Tide!!!BAW c.1976

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Questionable Thesis
Let me say first of all that I really enjoyed this book. As an inside look at the great 66 team as well as the context of the times, I recommend it highly. On the other hand, I can't agree that Bryant and his team were unfairly cheated out of a national championship. As good as the team was, the Tide's schedule was hardly arduous, especially in light of its failure to include the two other top teams in the SEC that year, Georgia and Florida. Bear Bryant had done very well in the context of the league, but if Alabama had to go up against heavier teams with talented black athletes, I doubt the team would have fared as well. Regardless of efforts to pump up the reputation of the 66 Nebraska team, it was certainly not a great one by any means. If Alabama had played the two teams that it trailed in the 66 polls, it would probably have lost to Michigan State and almost definitely would have been beaten by Notre Dame. Either of those teams would have reduced the Tide's running attack to non-existance and Stabler's passing alone wouldn't have been enough to compensate. Cecil Dowdy was a great player, but Bubba Smith took him apart in a post season all-star game. In short, a good big one beats a good little one every time. I can certainly understand, from their perspective at least, why Bama fans might feel cheated by the poll results. In the end, however, the Tide ended up about right where they belonged.

3-0 out of 5 stars Kind Of Whiney
As with most Bama fans -- and I am about as hard core Bama fan as one can get -- who were alive for the 1966 season I agree with the basic premise that the Tide got cheated by the pollsters and politics. The Tide was the only unbeaten and untied team in the country, defending two-time champs, and the 1966 team had little to show for all their efforts. The Tide could have and should have been the first and to this date the only threepeat NCAA football champions.

Although I have vague memories of prior seasons, 1966 was especially special for me as that was when I began following the Tide religiously and probably will continue to do so until I die.I remember many of the games and events in the book.I especially remembered the Tennessee game that came within a missed field goal at the end of ruining the Tide's claim on the national title. If that field goal had been good this book would have never been written.I also remembered Bear Bryant saying often that his 1966 team was his greatest.

So why do I give this book only three stars?Dunnavant tries to put a human face on the players who did everything they could do only to get stabbed in the back.No Bama fans were happy with the Tide finishing third and Bear Bryant was probably the most unhappy of all.But it happened.Yes, the 1966 Tide deserves recognition -- as does other teams who feel similarly screwed -- but it deserves recognition with dignity. This book whines constantly about how the Tide was cheated. It happened, it was not right, get over it.I realized Bear Bryant was unhappy but he got over it.Unless there was some way to go back and correct that injustice -- I do not know of any -- then recognize the 1966 Tide as a great team who lost out to politics. And it can be done without whining.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than a football book
The Missing Ring is a great nostalgic look at the State of Alabama and the Alabama Crimson Tide during the 1960s; I was a Birmingham teenager then. I enjoyed every page of this book. It puts you on the field with the players and coaches during memorable games. The author skillfully points out how a radical minority forever and shamefully linked Alabama with police dogs, fire hoses, and church bombings.I agree with Mr. Dunnavant that most Alabama citizens did not agree with the actions of George C. Wallace, Eugene "Bull" Conner, and the Ku Klux Klan.

Hope you enjoy the book as much as I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am loving football now!
I have become a football fanatic and this book is part of the reason! It's funny and informative and a good read all around.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Dating a Football Lover
This book really inspires me to try to get to know the game of football a little better. Every football season I feel like I should care more about the game to connect with my significant other. After reading this, I have the basic knowledge to start my own passion for football.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun read!
This is a fun look at football!Holly Robinson Peete uses such a converstational tone, it seems like she's talking directly to you.It is helpful to a novice football fan, but also enjoyable to someone who has logged in several hours on the couch on Saturday or Sunday.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great coffe table reference for women
I have watched football for years.I understand the basics but wanted to know more about intricacies of the game, such as play calling. This book does a pretty good job covering both the basics and the intricacies. It is a little sophomoric at times and definitely for women only. As in, "So and so has the nicest butt in a uniform." "The quarterback is the player who starts the play; you'll know the defense is on the field when the quarterback isn't." So Holly starts the lesson from the beginning--the VERY beginning.

I highly doubt there is an American male over the age of 10 who doesn't know who the quarterback is, but I imagine there are some women out there who have never watched a football game or never heard about a football game. These women I speak of are clearly NOT from Texas. Because, man or woman, you have to be in a coma to live in Texas and not know everything there is to know about football.

I could have done without the chapter on NFL wives (yawn, who cares), but this is a book marketed to women so fluff is to be expected.Be it out of jealousy (at least I am being honest) or disinterest, I have no desire to read about the trials and tribulations of being a rich NFL wife.I saw that chapter title and skipped straight to next chapter.

A few more graphics would have been nice to aid in understanding what she was explaining, but good job overall in covering the ins-and-outs of what is happening on the field from start to finish. Now when the announcers mention a "slant" or "play action" I know what they are talking about or can look it up.Great reference book to have on the coffee table during football season.I wish I had this book years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars I now LOVE football!!!
This book has saved me from looking like an idiot on Sundays! Even my boyfriend is impressed with the information in this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for any football athlete playing any position
I am a 17 year old senior in high school, and although I don't actually play football, I love the game and my favorite position is Quarterback.

This book covers how to be a good Quarterback very well, showing how to receive the snap, how to properly throw the ball, how to properly drop back, and even teaches you what mindset you should have - that is, if you are a player.

The book also covers every other position and area of football.. it has nearly everything you can think of, along with great pictures that demonstrate each and every step along the way.

Do you want to learn how to be a better Running Back? This book's got you covered.

Do you want to learn how to do better on the line? This book's got you covered.

Do you want to learn how to be a better kicker? This book's got you covered!

Perhaps the most impressive thing about the book is not just the content, but how it's presented.Since it practically goes step-by-step over each and every position, the book is suitable for coaches and players alike. So a coach will benefit from this book just as much as a player wanting to improve his position.

I would highly recommend this book, and I honestly can't find any flaws with it.It's well-presented, the author - Tom Bass - is a well-informed professional football coach, and you'll find just about everything you need.

If you are a football coach wanting to improve your team or a player wanting to improve your skills at a certain position(s), I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good beginning tool.
Well written.Easy to understand.Good remainder for coaches who forget who they are coaching for and why they are coaching youth football.
Good reading for any coach just starting or who have just a couple of years under their belt

3-0 out of 5 stars Slow start, but builds speed
For a coach, the first 3 chapters were not needed. The rest of the book provided great insight and help with the game.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpfull for the Beginner
This is my first year coaching and I found my knowledge of the game, and conditioning and prep drills lacking. This book may be too simple for those that have played the game a lot and are more than arm-chair quarterbacks.
I found the breakdown of practice sessions helpful because they stressed the different areas of the game but kept the pace moving to help keep the kids from getting bored.
This does not contain a playbook and if you are looking for this you might be disappointed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mostly Explains Football, Not How To Coach
This is an okay book, but the first half of this already thin ( about 120 pages 10"x7") book is just about something most guys who watch or have played football will already know. How wide is the field? How long is it?What's an even versus an odd defense? And so on.

The second half is very dilute, which is the real meat of coaching football. If you are an absolute novice, then buy this book.If you can get it free somewhere or very inexpensive, then it's worth a quick glance, but it is not a book you go back to over and over after the first reading, in my opinion.

Good luck to you coaches ...and remember the priority:
1. Children Safety
2. Build character
3. Win football games within spirit and letter of rules

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for Rookie Coaches.Very useful for veterans.
I've been coaching now for a couple of seasons and ran across this book.I decided to buy it, and a few others to add to my library.I feel like as a coach you can never learn too much, and this one seemed interesting.

I bought 4 books that day, but read this one first.I should have read it last because it made the other 3 look and sound retarded.Worst yet, it made me look stupid for buying them. The information provided in this book was absolutely great and very instructive. It really starts you off from the absolute basics of coaching, which can come across as a little condescending if you know anything about football. But quickly takes off into a world of information, some which you probably already knew but forgot over time.

It literally takes you by the hand and walks you through the process of getting through an entire season, from the first practice, how to handle parents, through team meetings, right into the seasons games.I highly recommend any coach that is working with youth teams (Jr. High and below) to take a look at this gem and get as much as they can from it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars fantasy football
very well written. YOu will have to make excel files for your players so be prepared.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brillant !!! A must have book that explains and teaches how to be better
I have followed David Dorey at The Huddle for many years now. His insight and advice have always impressed me as down to earth and on the money, yet his words were never preachy. He always seems to explain concepts as if he were your friend beside you at the draft, not the jerk Champion who knows everything and tells you so. It is with this same refreshing style that Dorey presents all of the best of his many years of wisdom.

This book really could be titled the 'Best of David Dorey'. And that is precisely why you should pick up a copy, because it is the best from one of the best in the business. He explains how to draft for a team not just individual stars. Perhaps more important is his analysis of what to look for when creating your own projections and rankings. But personally I think his LAG analysis is the most effective way to really see what effect your leagues individual scoring system has on your draft.

One last point that must be mentioned. Not only does 'Fantasy Football: The Next level' give tons of great advice, but it also explains why these concepts are valid and................illustrates this with the numbers to prove it. This is truly a great book and one you need to own if you want to win at Fantasy Football consistently.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource
I have played fantasy football since 1989, and this book taught me things I didn't know, reminded me of things I once knew but had forgot, and sharpened my focus heading into my redraft leagues' 2007 drafts. Buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hudde up now...and read how to become a winner
This book is a fantastic guide on how to play fantasy football and actually win! Author David Dorey is co-founder and co-owner of www.thehuddle.com. He has been following Fantasy Football for 20 years and is very knowledgeable about it.

In this book you will learn how to:

* Do mock drafts
* Build a winning team
* Make a cheat sheet of players to use for your draft
* Research your players
* Base your picks on this year, not last year, by calculating a player's value

This is the ultimate book for any Fantasy Football fan. I read it at the perfect time because after reading it I drafted my team for this season. I had notes about each player and was aware of which players were injured, what players were having contract disputes, and which players had a new head coach or coaching staff that could affect a player's playing time.

While fellow drafters laughed at my choices of players, I am very satisfied with my team as none of my players are injured or sitting on the sidelines, they're all starters. After passing on Clinton Portis, injured, Larry Johnson, holding out on a contract, I instead chose running back Thomas Jones who is healthy and will be starting.

This book is very informative, the information is easy to use and understand, and the graphs and charts were very helpful. I credit this book with making the draft a success for me this year and will suggest it to all my friends.

Armchair Interviews says: Fantasy football fans who want to win, better read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most useful book you will find on how to field a winner!
I have to say, as a 9 year veteran of fantasy football, I found Fantasy Football: The Next Level, to be by far the most purely useful book on the subject I have ever read. Coming from a practical "teach a man to fish" standpoint, the book provides any FF owner, from novice to know-it-all, with a number of great tools to improve their game. I found the info on the importance and best practices for creating your own projections to be extremely helpful, something I am implementing this season. All is delivered in David's winning, humorous style, which makes for a delightful read. If you have any interest in Fantasy Football, this book is a must-read. Pick it up.

5-0 out of 5 stars The First Great Football Writing Adventure
The first football book of its kind. Ground breaking. The foundation stone for all of the other great football books to come. Well written by Kuper and adventurously researched: travelling the world to see how deeply football was embedded in politics and culture.

Truly a must read for all "thinking" football fans.

Number one on many Best-of lists.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kuper knows his stuff.
Apart from a very informal writing style and a few errors like calling 1994 Brazilian presidential candidate LULU instead of LULA (Lula btw is the next President of Brazil), this book is just a jewel.

He shows well how culture and society mingle with sport, in this case, soccer. He was spot on repeatedly, such as:

--Holland Vs. Germany rivalry.I've asked Dutchmen about whether those comments regarding the war are true and they said yes.

--Brazil vs. Argentina:he said an American journalist never saw home court advantage such as the rabid fans in the Nunez venue in the Brazil match.True again. When these two play in either country home court advantage blows away anything US sports fans are used to.

And on he goes.If you are a diehard soccer fan as I am, you will love this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Well In There!
Young journalist Kuper traveled around the world like a madman to gather the stories of soccer's relationship to politics and culture collected in the book's twenty chapters. The result is a book that will delight anyone with an interest in the world's most popular sport, and will intrigue those interested in the world beyond their boundaries. The book's sole flaw is a certain choppiness, which is partially due to the haphazard nature of his travels, and partly due to Kuper's perhaps overambitious goal of examining how soccer "affects the life of a country" and "how the life of a country affects its football." Concentrating on one or the other would have given the book the focus it lacks-but that doesn't detract from its power.

Kuper uses soccer as a lens to look at the most central issues of the modern world race (South Africa), religion (Ireland and Scotland), culture (Brazil), totalitarianism (Argentina & East Germany), corruption (Ukraine), poverty (Africa), and especially nationalism (Holland, Slovakia, Catalonia, Serbia). Even those who dismiss sport as an "opiate of the masses" and don't care for soccer will be forced to acknowledge the sport's popularity and centrality, especially in less-developed nations. Each chapter is a stand-alone piece, with lengths varying from 5-25 pages or so, perfect for reading on the bus or just before bed. The only other caveat on the book is that it does often seem rather dated, and one keeps wishing it was a bit fresher. Still, this is a great bit of journalism and one every soccer fan should read.

Each chapter is a stand-alone piece, with lengths varrying from 5-25 pages or so, perfect for reading on the bus or just before bed. The only other cavaet on the book is that it does often seem rather dated, and one keeps wishing it was a bit fresher. Still, this is a great bit of journalism and one every soccer fan should read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best football book written in the past 10 years
This book is written in a style that will appeal to the lazy sunday reader in search for a funny read about football and politics, or the serious academic seeking answers to how a nation's culture manifests itself in the football style it adopts.

Kuper's book is simply outstanding. In it, we find out why the Dutch hate the Germans, the secret behind the success of Dynamo Kyev, and why anyone trying to map a post-war history of English culture must explain Gazza's tears. No serious football aficionado should be without this book. ... Read more

My husband and I are die-hard Auburn fans and I always give him some sort of Auburn gift for Christmas but how many T-shirts, caps & mugs can one person have? This past Christmas in search of something really different I bought the AUBURN VAULT book and IT WAS OUTSTANDING!!!!!My son and I spent about 2 hours looking at it when I brought it home - all the while watching the front door for any signs of my husband. We could hardly tear ourselves away from it to wrap it.MY HUSBAND ABSOLUTELY LOVES IT!!We look at it all the time remembering past games and experiences.A MUST HAVE FOR ANY AUBURN FAN!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book I ever gave a client
Sharing the status of Auburn Alumni with a favorite client, i thought this book would be a perfect Christmas gift for him.Not only did he absolutely love it, but i received a letter from his wife telling me it was his prized Christmas gift of '07. She said he kept it on the table by his chair and jumped at the chance to share it with anyone who came through the door.It is truly a vault of the best memorabilia. There are old rally caps, football tickets and footage from some of the great players and coaches that's completely unseen or heard before David Housel eloquent account of the history of Auburn Football. No matter the age of the fan, this book is truly a prized possession.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most exciting gift giving ever!
I bought this book for my dad who is so hard to buy gifts for. He's usually pleased with something from Auburn (t-shirts, etc) and I happened upon this and ordered it not knowing what it was. It came yesterday and I am so very HAPPY and excited to give this to my dad, the biggest Auburn fan ever! This book is amazing with all ticket replicas and bumper stickers. I can not wait until he opens this on Christmas. It is well worth the $40.00 and I am extremely surprised it doesn't cost more. Get this book if you have an Auburn fan in your life! You will be their BFF :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential For Any Football Coach
"Winning Single Wing Football" is a complete revision of the late Dr. Kenneth Keuffel's classic 1964 "Simplified Single Wing Football" (or SSWF, which I will contrast with the newer WSWF).Written an astonishing FORTY YEARS later, WSWF starts with the core of the unbalanced-line single wing offense that SSWF first presented, then adds much more. The irony to me is that WSWF is actually far more "simplified" than SSWF.It is as though with 40 additional years of experience to draw on, Dr. Keuffel pared away all but the absolutely essential information.

After a brief introductory chapter that outlines his playing, coaching and teaching careers, Dr. K walks the prospective single wing coach through all the steps he must take to get an offense up and running. He does so in a way that reflects credit on his Ph.D. in English Lit from Penn -- simply and logically.

I know of no other coach able to impart the basics of setting up a single wing attack in only 10 pages, but Dr. Keuffel manages this
