Product Description
Bob McMurray has just about seen all you can in motor sport. Right from the halcyon days when Bruce McLaren was setting up his fledgling Formula One team through to witnessing the first Kiwi to win one of the most prestigious motor-racing trophies, the Borg-Warner at the Indianapolis 500. McMurray's book is more like a conversation you'd have in the bar about 30-odd years in Formula One rather than who set the fastest time at Monaco on lap 32 in 1987 in what car, on what tyres, wearing what-coloured overalls and with what sort of logo on his helmet. Numbers can be found on the Internet; this book is about the interesting stuff. There are stories about battles both on and off the track. Political and personal egos were clashing with such ferocity that - to steal a quote from British politician Enoch Powell from around the same time - the streets (of pit lane) could easily have run with rivers of blood. McMurray was there to witness the birthing pains of the modern Formula One circus. As the world of motor sport morphed into the financial behemoth we recognize now, the paddock became littered with destroyed, or severely crushed, egos and careers. All of which were fun and games to watch from inside the tent, rather than from outside as most of the world did. He saw paddock revolution, driver tantrums, spying, industrial espionage, intrigue and more scandal than an American soap could ever hope to come up with. He also saw more friendships, more fun, more camaraderie and the closest bonding between team members than is possible to explain in mere words. ... Read more

Product Description
Formula One motor racing is today the richest and most powerful sport in the world. Combining glamour, engineering excellence, advanced technology, danger and speed, it ranks alongside the Olympic Games and soccer's World Cup as one of the world's greatest sporting events. In this book, Russell Hotten examines for the first time the business and finance of Formula One including the sport's movers and shakers, its multi-millionaire drivers, and the team owners, sponsors and media.Amazon.com Review
Auto racing is one of the world's top spectator sports, and RussellHotten's Winning thoroughly examines the larger-than-lifepersonalities, cutting-edge technologies and over-the-top commercialtriumphs that mark the stunningly successful British-based Grand Prixcircuit. Hotten, financial news editor at London's Mail on Sundaynewspaper, notes at the start that an entire March-through-October FormulaOne racing season actually consumes less time than a single typical workweek--although its outsized entertainment and business benefits are riddenfull bore year-round. Written from a Brit's global perspective, his bookfully explains the sky-high stakes that result when every two-hour race onalternating Sundays is watched by 350 million enthusiasts in over 200countries. "Only the Olympics and (soccer's) World Cup surpass theseviewing figures," Hotten writes, "but they only take place every fouryears." As such F1 has become an international commercial phenomenon, evenif its U.S. appeal is dampened by America's fascination with homegrownNASCAR and Indy racing. Everything is in place for even more growth, though, and Hotten tells all about the "fast cars, wealth, glamour, sex, danger" and controversies (such as the big-money sponsorships by tobaccocompanies). Race fans worldwide, as well as those interested in the generalbusiness of sports, will likely find Winning a winner. --HowardRothman ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring
This is a really boring book.As you read it, you're always waiting to get to the interesting part that never really arrives.Hotten's writing style is very dry and the book reads like a textbook. He also constantly repeats the same things over and over again - yes, I already know that F1 is very expensive, Ferrari is passionate and Williams has great engineering.

Even the layout of the book can get frustrating. The chapters don't flow well and the whole book comes off as being incoherent and repetitive.Hotten should have gathered all his facts and then let someone else write and edit the book for him, probably down to about half its current size.I'm not sure if I can recommend another book for people interested in learning about the F1 business, but I can certainly advise against getting this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars There is alot more to F1 than the racing
This book examines the sport outside of the actual racing. The cost of the series, the sponsorship, and the politics. It also examines the history of the sport to show how the sport evolved into what it is today. It highlights a few teams as examples of the way the teams approach the f1 environment. It is an interesting sport where Michael Schmaucher makes more in a year than the total budget of some of the less competative teams (i.e. Arrows). Don't be fooled by the Nov 2000 publication date. This is a book that was written in 1998 and then published for the US market in 2000. There is a final chapter that I am sure was supposed to be substituted for the original final chapter (It is in large part a cut and paste of the original final chapter), but due to poor editing both chapters are included in the book. Overall I enjoyed the book and found that it really helped my understanding of the sport. Before this book, I could never understand how the underfunded teams survived.

4-0 out of 5 stars Aninformative behind the scenes look at Formula One
A well written book covering the various players (the teams, FIA, advertising, sponsors and the media) that make up Formula One today. The book traces the origins of the sport and how it has evolved into the mediaevent that it is today.

The book is an easy read and makes watchingFormula One racing more interesting. ... Read more

well all in all its a good book, decent articles, great pictures of formula 1 from 1950 to 2000, but i still just cant get over the fact that there were so many spelling errors, nobody proofread this book, it would be one thing if it was just maybe 1 or 2 errors in a 300 page book, but ive seen so many its the first thing i think of when flipping through this book, "lets see how many errors i can find!"

decent book if you can see past the bad english and letters where numbers are supposed to be in the drivers championship tables ;)

Product Description

This book fills an important gap in the history of top-level motor racing during the historic era of the 1960s and 70s. The author was at the center of it all, first as Sir Jack Brabham's right-hand man during his leadership of the Cooper team, and later when he formed his own Brabham Racing Organization. Subsequently, when Phil Kerr joined his great friend Bruce McLaren, to become joint managing director of an ever expanding company, which was to achieve unrivalled success in Can-Am racing as well as being at the forefront of Formula One, he and his colleagues had to cope with the tragedy of the founder's untimely death while testing a Can-Am car at Goodwood. The author's description of how the shattered team was saved and ultimately restored by the bravery of Bruce's co-driver Denny Hulme, already sidelined by agonizing burns to his hands, is a poignant highlight of his story. Includes a balanced mix of racing and off-duty pictures, many being seen for the first time and 15 reproductions of paintings by the renowned artist Michael Turner.

An in-depth study of the V10 F1 engine by Ian Bamsey, editor of RACE ENGINE TECHNOLOGY Magazine. In 1988 Ian produced a definitive and extensive survey of contemporary racing engines, including Grand Prix contenders (the International Race Engine Directory). The following year saw the arrival of the V10 engine. Since that time Ian has charted its progress through numerous interviews with those responsible for Formula One engine design and development work. This book is the detailed technical history of the Formula One V10 engine, examples of which have been made by the likes of Ferrari, Cosworth/Ford, Ilmor/Mercedes, Honda, Renault, BMW, Toyota, Peugeot, Yamaha, Judd and Hart.Written in a manner that is understandable by the layman, this book reveals the secrets that have enabled since 1989 V10 engine speed to increase from 13,000 to 19,000 rpm. At the same time horsepower has increased from 650 bhp to more than 900 bhp in spite of the reduction in capacity from 3.5 to 3.0-litres made from 1995. This book explains how that extraordinary jump has been possible. In an age of great secrecy in Formula One, this is the first time that the workings of the contemporary V10 engine have been revealed in such detail. Ian's careful cultivating of the key people involved in the technology over the years has permitted a unique in depth research insight. Edition limited to 2000 copies. 236mm x 326mm ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As complete as it gets in one volume
This is an indipensible reference work for the motor racing enthusiast. Unfortunately, the web is making books of this type rare. Vital stats for every major series, driver, and circuit are included. The presentation and commentaries are readable and enlightening. Hopefully another volume is forthcoming from Mr. Higham but if not, this book provides a comprehensive overview of automobile racing in the 20th century within the covers of a single volume. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Well Done
This book is very well done and a nice follow up to the prior edition and I would recommend having both since the first volume does feature certain things not covered in the follow up, such as the now defunct IROC series. My understanding is that IROC was continued up past 2002, so why it is not in the follow up is beyond my grasp. I hope a more current edition is published in a year or so, and if it is, I plan on purchasing it as well. The data provided in these books is invaluable. Highly recommended, but this edition I feel is not worthy of 5 stars as it lacks input on the ARCA, NASCAR lower tier series, and IROC, but given that what it does contain dwarfs what it doesn't I'd certainly give it 4 stars.

2-0 out of 5 stars Troubleahead
The trouble with this kind of data book is that it's already dated one minute before it's published. This book covers up until 2002 and, as you know, were already at 2007...

Also, in the Internet age all thsi data can easily be obtained in a lot of web sites. Of course, this kind of book has the advantage of displaying the data in a friendly manner and within only one tome.

Well, anyway, make up your own mind...

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely priceless
It seems that Mr. Higham has spent years searching through dusty basements and smelly photo archives to assemble all of this information. If you're interesed in finding out who won what when, this is the book for you.A bit mind-numbing really, as there is so much information gathered here that it is overwhelming.

For the serious anorak, there is nothing like this volume!

Highly recommended. ... Read more
