The club plays both hurling and gaelic football and competes in both senior codes in County Waterford . The club in its present incarnation was formed from the merger of Abbeyside Hurling Club and Ballinacourty Football club in 1967. In essence, the present club can trace its way back to 1927 when Abbeyside Hurling Club was formed. Ballinacourty Football Club was formed later in 1947. The club still uses two separate names depending on which sport they are playing. The name Abbeyside is still used as the name for its hurling teams, while its football teams still go under the name of Ballinacourty. The club was the 2007 Waterford club of the year Honours References (URLs online) Websites (URLs online) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at Áth Meadhon Ceapach Choinn CLG item Senior Club Championships item : All Ireland: Munster champions: Waterford champions Affane Cappoquin GAA is a Ga... ... Excerpt: Erin's Own GAA (Kilkenny) -Erin's Own has enjoyed senior status since 1958, and while the Senior title remains elusive, hundreds of players and supporters have derived great enjoyment from the club over the years. In 1979, Erins Own reached their only Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship final, opponents on the day were Ballyhale Shamrocks. The game was a draw (0-14 apiece) and the replay was abandoned mid-way through following an accidental pull by an Erins Own player which resulted in a mass brawl. The score at the time was Ballyhale 3-12, Erins Own 1-6. The team on the day was: Eddie Mahon, Tom Cloney Brennan, Martin Coogan (Capt), Donal Dunne, Tommy Brennan, Peter Boran, Martin Fogarty, Eamonn Wallace, Joe O' Neill, Michael Nash, Mick Cloney Brennan, Seamus Brennan, Eamonn Brennan, Mick China Brennan, Terry Brennan The club has won titles in all grades of Hurling and Football except the two big ones, Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship and Kilkenny Senior Football Championship. In 2001 both titles were in sight, with the Hurlers losing the League final and reaching the Championship semi-final, while the footballers went even closer, losing the final in a replay. The Prince Grounds has been home to Erin's Own since the 1950s at least. During the '50s the Prince was owned by the Wandesforde family, the landlords of the Castlecomer estate. Erin's Own purchased the property outright in the 1960s. In the early days hurling was not the only sport to be played at the Prince, the ground seeing plenty of hockey played, and even some cricket. In the '70s and '80s the club regularly loaned the pitch to the local soccer team while they were acquiring and de...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=6718777 ... Read more

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Hurling (Irish: ) is an outdoor team sport of ancient Gaelic origin, administered by the Gaelic Athletic Association, and played with sticks called hurleys and a ball called a sliotar. The game, played primarily in Ireland, has prehistoric origins and is thought to be the world's fastest field team sport in terms of game play. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, number of players, and much terminology. There is a similar game for women called camogie (camógaíocht). The object of the game is for players to use a wooden stick called a hurley (in Irish a camán, pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a sliotar (pronounced ) between the opponents' goalposts either over the crossbar for one point, or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for one goal, which is equivalent to three points. The sliotar can be caught in the hand and carried for not more than four steps, struck in the air, or struck on the ground with the hurley. It can be kicked or slapped with an open hand (the hand pass) for short-range passing. A player who wants to carry the ball for more than three steps has to bounce or balance the sliotar on the end of the stick and the ball can only be handled twice while in his possession. Side-to-side shouldering is allowed although body-checking or shoulder-charging is illegal. No protective pad...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

Chapters: History of Tyrone Gaelic Football. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 21. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Tyrone has been represented in Gaelic football for nearly a century, but until the mid eighties, the Senior team were considered among the weaker teams in Ulster. However, today, Tyrone is considered one of the strongest teams in Ireland, having won All-Irelands in 2003, 2005 and 2008. Tyrone first won the Ulster Championship in 1956, and defended it in 1957, with a team that included the legendary Iggy Jones and Frankie Donnelly. However, for the vast majority of the 20th Century, Tyrone were considered one the weaker teams in Ulster, which itself was probably considered the weakest province. Cavan had been the dominant force in Ulster right up until the 1960s. Tyrone didn't win a third Ulster title until 1973. The Tyrone Minors however won the All-Ireland in 1947, 1948 and 1973. 1973 is remembered because Frank McGuigan, who captained the minor team, was also part of the Under-21 and Senior teams that won their Ulster Championships. Tyrone's first successful era came in the mid-eighties with the star-studded team that included players such as Frank McGuigan, Eugene McKenna, Plunkett Donaghy and John Lynch. In 1980, Kevin McCabe made history as Tyrone's first ever winner of an All Star Award. In 1984, Tyrone won their fourth Ulster Championship, with Frank McGuigan's display in the Ulster Final against Armagh considered among the finest individual performances ever seen in Gaelic Games. He scored eleven points from open play, five with each foot, and one fisted over. In 2004, his display was voted as one of the Top 20 GAA Moments of the previous forty years (i.e. since the dawn of televised matches). McGuigan won an All-Star that year, as did Eugene McKenna. Excerpt: Billy Morgan (born 2 February, 1945 in Cork, Ireland) is a retired Irish Gaelic football manager and former player. He played football with his local club Nemo Rangers and was a member of the Cork senior inter-county team from 1966 until 1981. Morgans involvement as a player or manager over five decades single him out as one of Cork footballs greatest-ever servants. Billy Morgan was born in Douglas on the south side of Cork city in 1945. He was born into a household that, ironically, had a strong hurling tradition. Both his parents hailed from Galway and, from an early age, Morgans dream was to play hurling for Cork. Over time, however, he became interested in Gaelic football. Morgan was educated at the famous Coláiste Chríost Rí school and later attended nearby University College Cork. Here Morgan made a name for himself as a good goalkeeper and established himself as a key member of the universitys football team. In 1966 he won a coveted Sigerson Cup winners medal as UCC defeated University College Galway (UCG) in the inter-varsities tournament. A second consecutive defeat of UCG in 1967 gave Morgan a second Sigerson Cup title. Morgan later worked as a secondary school teacher, before travelling to New York University in the early 1980s to complete a masters degree in physical education. He also ran a pub in the centre of Cork city for a period and he currently works as a financial adviser with his son Brian Morgan and with his nephew William Morgan. The Leinster football Final is played in July in Croke Park, Dublin. The winning county is presented with the Delaney Cup. Dublin are the most successful, having won the championship on 48 separate occasions, more than double their nearest rivals Meath. The GAA Leinster Football Championship is run on a knock-out basis in which once a team loses they are eliminated from the competition. Excerpt: The history of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship is long and remarkable, with over one hundred and twenty years of competition finding winners and losers from all parts of the country. Tracing the history of the Hurling Championship back to its beginning, it is possible to easily pick out periods when specific teams or counties dominated the competition, only to find themselves rapidly superseded by another dominant team or teams. The format of the championship had also undergone several significant changes throughout the years, with the creation of the 'back-door system' in 1997 and the expanded qualifiers in 2002. The format of the very first hurling championship was unique in that it was the only open draw All-Ireland championship ever-played. The five participating teams were paired off against each other regardless of their provincial locations. Three teams - Galway, Kilkenny and Wexford - advanced directly to the semi-final stages of the competition, while Clare and Tipperary met in a lone 'quarter-final.' Chapters: Gaelic Football Clubs in County Wexford, Hurling Clubs in County Wexford, Horeswood Gaa, Rathnure Gaa, Faythe Harriers Gaa, Oulart the Ballagh Gaa. Excerpt: Horeswood GAA - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia When, in 1889, Martin Kenny handed 10 shillings to County Treasurer, John J. Kehoe, William K. Redmonds Football Club became the first club from the parish to affiliate to the Wexford GAA. The following year, the name of the club was changed to Campile Football Club. At the time, the Senior Championship was the only competition a club could enter and Campile Football Club were drawn against Vinegar Hill in the 1st round. As was often the case in those days the game ended prematurely. Campile claimed a disputed goal and when the referee decided in Campiles favour Vinegar Hill would not accept the decision and refused to continue. The game was awarded to Campile. Unfortunately, the campaign ended in the next round when the team was beaten by Glynn. In 1900 a hurling game was played by Ballinamona Young Emmets against Carrigduff Heroes. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: There are many players who have converted one football code to another or even changed from other sports at a professional or representational level. In some countries, such as Australia where multiple codes are popular and the practice of switching codes is common they are known simply as a code convert. In Australia star code converts can have a substantial impact on the football codes. For instance, Dally Messenger's defection from rugby union to rugby league was considered a pivotal moment in the establishment of the latter code over other codes in Australia. Globalisation is increasing the opportunities for players to transfer to different countries and to different professional sports, including the codes of football. Because American and Canadian football are both gridiron codes, they are very similar, and most players can easily change back and forth between the two codes without much difficulty. Below is only a partial list of players who have made the transition from the NFL to the CFL. NB: Tardits switched codes twice: to American football as a young adult, and back to rugby union after a brief NFL career. He played for Biarritz Olympique and the France under-21 national team before switching to American football, and played for the USA national team after returning to his original code. This entry outlines his career after his second switch of codes. Numerous American football placekickers grew up playing football (soccer); however, very few have competed at a very high level in their original code. A large number of the first "soccer-style" placekickers of the 1960s and early 1970s were Europeans and Latin Americans who ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3938277 ... Read more

Excerpt: Dungiven GAC -Dungiven fields Gaelic football teams at U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, Minor, Reserve and Senior levels. They currently compete in the Derry Senior Football Championship and Division 1 of the Derry ACFL. The club is named after Saint Canice, who was born in 516AD in Cianacta Glinne Geimin, which is modern day Dungiven. Although the club, St. Canices, was founded in 1943 there is firm evidence that Gaelic games were played in Dungiven over a century before that. The first record of Gaelic Football played by a Dungiven team was a match on the 9 April 1922. The game was against Creggan (from Faughanvale Parish). The Dungiven team of that time played under the name of John Mitchels G.F.C. and they clinched the North Derry League that year. After a few years there was a dormant period but during the mid 1930s there was a resurgence of local interest in Gaelic Football. The local curate Father Colm Mc Goldrick who in 1936 was made chairman of the refounded North Derry Board encouraged the Dungiven Club to regroup. Consequently a meeting was called in May 1936, in Mc Kennas store (Groogans Lower Main Street) to set up a club...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=8976711 ... Read more

A collection was held at a dance and sufficient money was raised to purchase a football and hire a field from July to October. This field was on the Oldtown Lane and was owned by Joe McKibben. After a number of practice matches among themselves and with the neighbouring 'Clinchers' from Brackney it was decided to hold a meeting and form a committee. No records were kept of this meeting but it is thought that the first Longstone committee consisted of: This committee registered a team in the Frontier Junior League called Longstone Emmetts. In 1947, Longstone were playing in the newly formed Intermediate League. Under the captaincy of Henry Pat McCartan, the team won this league at the first attempt. The captain and players were presented with the Fitzsimmons Cup and medals, by Rev. G. McCaul, C.C., at a ceili in Longstone Hall. The music was supplied by Longstone Ceili Band. From winning the Intermediate League, Longstone advanced to the Senior League and in 1951, they finished as Runners-up to Newry. In 1952, Longstone won a 7-a-side competition at Ballymartin and a Senior chall... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=8649589 ... Read more
