The book came along something I did not expect. Bonus DVD! Although it is not long in length, it gave me some a real insight into my swing.

5-0 out of 5 stars In-Depth and a Great Deal
I cant really add a whole lot to what others have said about this book, but I will try.

All in all, this is an outstanding value (under $20) for what you get. This is, afterall, written by some of the Top 100 Golf Teachers in America. After reading through some of the contents I was having issues with in my game, I can honestly say I would still consider this a good deal @ $30- 40. Its just as complete a Game- Improvement book I've ever seen. And the drills they ask you to do arent rediculous. Most of them can be achieved around the house if you have a putting mat and/or hitting net.

I'm 'new' to golf (less than 1 year in) so I can only speak for beginners, but I would be shocked if I'm not referring to this book for the next 10 years. As a bonus, it will help me teach my children the game of golf. I'm really excited about that. I can do all the 'boring' reading (which its actually not boring at all), then take them out to the hitting net and teach the kids what I've learned. Great product.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
This book is not be read from cover to cover as you would a novel. Choose the section that highlights your weakness, and then check out the tips. Everything is laid out in clear pictures.

The tips are good and will help your game.

Book Description
The best players know that golf is a game of confidence, and most important, concentration–the ability to focus and block out distraction. The goal of achieving clear thought is also at the heart of Buddhist teachings. In his highly original and groundbreaking book, noted PGA coach and Buddhist instructor, Dr. Joseph Parent, draws on this natural connection and teaches golfers how to clear their minds, achieve ultimate focus, and play in the moment for each shot.

Zen Golf presents a simple system for building “mental game mastery.”Dr Parent’s unique PAR Approach (focusing on Preparation, Action, and Response to Results) guides golfers with specific techniques for each aspect of their games. In chapters such as “How to Get From the Practice Tee to the First Tee”, “You Produce What You Fear”, and “How to Enjoy a Bad Round of Golf”, the author shares a personal teaching regimen that has helped improve the games of professionals and amateurs alike. By combining classic insights and stories from Zen tradition, Zen Golf helps eliminate the mental distractions that routinely cause poor shots and loss of concentration, allowing golfers to feel in “the zone” that professionals have learned to master.

Clear, concise, and enlightening, Zen Golf shows golfers how to prepare for, execute, and equally important, respond the results of any golf shot. A different approach to golf instruction, this book shapes ancient philosophies into new teachings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Improve my game!!
I am a beginner golfer and this book is helpful for the mental part of golf! I would suggest it to anyone that plays golf. I gave to a friend that throws clubs in frustration and she played a round for the first time with no broken clubs and was relaxed, she says the book is helping her too

5-0 out of 5 stars Zen Golf is the Second Best
I loved this book!I learned more about the art of the mental game of golf in this thin volume than in a half dozen longer times (.e.: The Mental Games of Golf).I would put this up there with "See It Sink It" or "Every Shot Must Have a Purpose".

A must have for any serious golfer.I dare you to read the story about the golden statue and tell me that it didn't affect you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Connects the Mind and Body
Finally, a book that puts the mental game into sections that make sense. Told in a down-to-earth way, the examples and insights provided by "Zen Golf" really do pertain to the game we love. Understanding that the results of a swing are not necessarily the be-all and end-all is very powerful knowledge. Learning to breathe will apply to a myriad of endeavor, both athletic and personal. Ostensibly, it is a book about golf, but one that fills many gaps in all kinds of life situations. Dr. Parent is a born teacher.

Bottom Line . It took five strokes off my handicap.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful Info for beginner and intermediate golfer alike
From a novice golfer: This book was well-written and covers many of the technical fundamentals of the game. I found that the descriptions of the techniques, as well as the exercises to improve your stance or physical ability, was just as helpful as the explanation of the finer points of playing the game. I was going to read it cover-to-cover, but ended up skipping the majority of "The Part of Tens" which covers such things as the author's ten favorite private and public golf courses, and the ten favorite male and female players. I may refer back to this info in the future if I become more interested in the history of the game and descriptions of the greatest players. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the book and plan to review sections of the book repeatedly in order to strengthen my playing skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth it
Read this book in conjunction with the golf book for dummies on etiquette. Both worth the read, though you cannot learn to play golf with either book.It will however, get you into the culture, become aware of how to approach the game and avoid many pitfalls.

Ben Hogan's premise in this 1957 classic is driven home in bold letters: "THE AVERAGE GOLFER IS ENTIRELY CAPABLE OF BUILDING A REPEATING SWING AND BREAKING 80." Religions are founded on less, and Hogan's detailed analyses and illustrated demonstrations of grip, stance, posture, and the two basic components of the swing make up a sacred book. Though its very simplicity seems dated, this is the tome of technique that should serve as the foundation of every golf library.Book Description
The building blocks of winning golf -- from one of the masters of the game.

Ben Hogan, one of the greatest golfers in the history of the sport, believed that any golfer with average coordination can learn to break 80 -- if one applies oneself patiently and intelligently. With the techniques revealed in this classic book, you can learn how to make your game work from tee to green, step-by-step and stroke by stroke.

In each chapter, a different tested fundamental is explained and demonstrated with clear illustrations -- as though Hogan were giving you a personal lesson with the same skill and precision that made him a legend. Whether you're a novice player or an experienced pro, Ben Hogan's Five Lessons is a must-have reference for anyone who knows that fundamentals are where champions begin. ... Read more

One of golf guru Jim Flick's mantras is that golf is 90 percent mental, and the other 10 percent is mental, too. Dr. Bob Rotella, a noted sports psychologist and performance consultant, roots around the golfer's mind to expose--and analyze--the doubts, the fears, and the frustrations that haunt anyone who's ever picked up a club and swung it. Through anecdote and aphorism he suggests how these mental and emotional hazards can be played through, and, regardless of skill level, how teeing off with a more positive and confident outlook will translate into better performance.Book Description
Dr. Bob Rotella is one of the hottest performance consultants in America today. Among his many professional clients are Nick Price (last year's Player of the Year), Tom Kite, Davis Love III, Pat Bradley, Brad Faxon, John Daly, and many others. Rotella, or "Doc," as most players refer to him, goes beyond just the usual mental aspects of the game and the reliance on specific techniques. What Rotella does here in this extraordinary book, and with his clients, is to create an attitude and a mindset about all aspects of a golfer's game, from mental preparation to competition. The most wonderful aspect of it all is that it is done in a conversational fashion, in a dynamic blend of anecdote and lesson. And, as some of the world's greatest golfers will attest, the results are spectacular. Golfers will improve their golf game and have more fun playing. Some of Rotella's maxims include:

* On the first tee, a golfer must expect only two things of himself: to have fun, and to focus his mind properly on every shot.

* Golfers must learn to love 'the challenge when they hit a ball into the rough, trees, or sand. The alternatives -- anger, fear, whining, and cheating -- do no good.

* Confidence is crucial to good golf. Confidence is simply the aggregate of the thoughts you have about yourself.

* It is more important to be decisive than to be correct when preparing to play any golf shot or putt.

Filled with delightful and insightful stories about golf and the golfers Rotella works with, Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect will improve the game of even the most casual weekend player. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A must
If you are interested in the Mental aspect of The Game all of Doc Rotellas books are a must!

1-0 out of 5 stars Far from perfect but a worthwhile cure for insomnia
Dr Bob Rotella is extremely well known in golf education for his advice on how to train your mind to play your best golf. He has helped some distinguished players including Tom Kite.

His basic philosophy is:
1. Believe you can achieve your golfing dream.
2. Have no swing thoughts or any thoughts about swing mechanics when you play.
3. Focus on a target for the ball: the smaller the better.
4. Stay in the present: forget previous shots (good and bad), don't think about the score for the round (good or bad). This will only distract you.

I have awarded this a one star. This is perhaps harsh, perhaps a three star would be appropriate but here is why I did:

My average handicap is 25 (27 in competition). I have been playing for three years and in the past 7 months as much as 5 or 6 times a week. I eat, sleep and dream golf. I devour new books and DVDs from the big names and some of the less well known.

I regularly watched the golf channel UK (RIP) and read Golf Digest online. My best rounds are around 85. My theoretical best (best scores per hole on different days) is 63.

In spite of starting this great game of golf at the age of 40, I've done well in many other sports and activities (squash, snowboarding, fencing, motorsport, aviation) and believe I should be able to play at a good level: regularly in the 80s and why not, with training and perseverance, in the 70s.

In short, my profile matches that of the target reader for this book. I had high expectations of this book and was hoping to discover new information and techniques on how to train my mind to get the best from my golf.

In reality, I found nothing new here. Most of the advice really is common sense and common place in all the golf related material I've encountered. Bob spends too much time covering what not to think. In the audio version, Bob drones on so much he sent me to sleep. Sadly, I have to say, the book is not worth the money and I can not recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars My golf game improved after reading this book
The saying that goes "golf is 90% mental" cannot be more true and revealing after you finish reading this book.Granted you have to have the physical ability and a few golf lessons under your belt to be able to put a good round of golf together, but what this book does is help one put aside, or dismiss, those negative thoughts that somehow show up in your mind just as you set up to hit the ball. This book teaches you to think positive, it gives you good tips and great advice.I have implemented many of the tips given and I can say it has positively helped my golf game.I would say reading this book probably help me shave 5-6 strokes of my handicap.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
How may of us leave the course ready to give up this crazy game? This book helps you put a smile on your face and actually enjoy the game. It's a must read for the golf lover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow

Long before Dr. Bob Rotella made tweaking a golfer's head as important as tweaking his swing, Tim Gallwey, who knew virtually nothing about the mechanics of the game when he penned the first edition of this visionary work, understood that even the best technique collapses when the mind cracks under the game's pressure. Gallwey's ultimate insight into the game was that a golfer's mind is a golfer's worst enemy; too much thinking only gets in the way.

The new edition of this groundbreaking instructional continues to preach such "Inner Game" fundamentals as trust, concentration, visualization, feel, and relaxation, and is full of what Gallwey calls "awareness exercises." Much of what he has to say seems obvious in a world in which most good athletes have some kind of psychological guru always at the ready to help improve performance, but Gallwey, with his bagful of anecdotes and encouragement, was one of the first to explore this uncharted territory, and still remains one of the most readable. --Jeff SilvermanBook Description
W. Timothy Gallwey's bestselling Inner Game books--with over one million copies sold--have revolutionized the way we think about sports. And now, after twenty years of applying his Inner Game methods to the royal and ancient sport of golf, Gallwey brings us this completely revised edition of his classic The Inner Game of Golf, nearly half of which is new material, published here for the first time.
Even the masters of the game, from the venerable Jack Nicklaus to the wunderkind Tiger Woods, must battle their mental demons to excel in the crucible of competition. How do they maintain concentration under pressure? How do they avoid the mental and physical tensions that can sabotage any shot, from the simplest putt to a demanding drive? And how do they contend with the nagging inner voice that says, "You haven't been playing your best today. How will you keep from messing up on this shot?"
Here, Gallwey provides specific ways for you to improve the concentration and confidence that keep your insecurities from hijacking your best instincts, your score, and your enjoyment of the game. In addition to the specifics of Inner chipping, Inner swinging, and Inner putting, Gallwey explains why the art of "relaxed concentration" is the fundamental skill for improving every aspect of your game.
It may seem like common sense nowadays to say that mental approaches are as crucial as physical skills in a good game of golf. But Gallwey was among the first to say it, and he is a pioneer of the modern sports psychology movement. In The Inner Game of Golf, now comprehensively updated, you will find the kind of perceptive and articulate instruction that not only will improve your swing, but, perhaps even more important, will reacquaint you with the pure pleasure of the game. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Start it early
This book shopuld be a starter in golf. All the complications reduced to simple actions based on allowing ourselves to play naturally, relaxed and easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most important part of my golf game
The Inner Game of Golf is a great, honest read that that any golfer will be able to understand and apply practically with ease. Tim uses straight forward language, and unlike many other authors, doesn't fill the pages with unnecessary anecdotes about famous players.

It has changed my game, and made me a much more relaxed and composed golfer. Although I'm not a fantastic golfer yet, it has given me direction for improvement and practice, and new enjoyment for the game.

Very highly recommended.

The Inner Game of Golf

5-0 out of 5 stars Lesson Learned
May be a bit too "inner" for some, but I enjoyed the book. Good golf tips for all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inner games, inner worries
Instruction will only get you so far. Any hack knows that. What most don't know, however, is that you can be your own worst enemy on the course, and for more reasons than one.

At the same time, however, you can be the best thing that has ever happened to your game.

Gallwey's Inner Game series has been around much longer than many realize. Not only that, but his ideas were at least a decade ahead of anything anyone was doing.

Gallwey's approach is simple. He divides a person's mind into two big regions. Self 1 is controling, egocentric, and demanding. Self 2, on the other hand, is non-judgemental, intuitive, and generally focused on whatever it is doing at the time. The problems begin when Self 1 starts getting in Self 2's way, giving it instructions it doesn't need, and locking it into a pattern of failure many are all too familiar with.

The goal, as Gallwey sets it out, is to get Self 1 to step aside during the swing and let Self 2 take total control. This is not easy to do, however, especially since many people have yet to realize the existance of these two selfs to begin with.

Gallwey bases his ideas on his experience in tennis, but appears successful in translating them into golf. He set a goal at the outset of writing the book to break 80 by basically putting only the time the average golfer has into improving his game (practice at home, plus a day or two at the range, and one round a week if possible), that and adhearing to his own methods. Obviously, he succeed, which helps give hope to those looking to try the same path.

Overall Gallwey's ideas are clear, and the writing narrative, which may put some readers off. Still, his exercises should help guide golfers into understanding how their mentalities can affect their play, as well as create barriers to further improvement.

The biggest drawback to Gallwey's theory of a Self 1 and Self 2 are that he seems to assign a bad-guy role to Self 1, while Self 2 is the trodden-upon hero. Whether this sort of duality is the final answer to things is a bit up in the air, and does not appeal to a more holistic approach to the game.

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Read Nothing Else About Golf, Read This!
A timeless classic that helped start the "inner game" revolution - this is the book that points golfers to the other half of the game, the inner aspect of the game. Practical without being hoakey or too metaphysical. One of those book you'll keep on your shelf forever. ... Read more

Perhaps that's why Chris Santella, author of Fifty Places to Fly Fish Before You Die, can be found on the links when he's not on the stream. The photo's and the script makes me want to visit every place. Very relaxing and something to look forward to.

4-0 out of 5 stars 50 Places to Play Golf Before You Die
A lovely book. Not exceptional, but enjoyable. It was disappointing in two ways:
1. some of the authors (each chapter talks about a specific course or courses) of the chapters were the course designer of that specific course - clearly, a conflict of interest!
2. would have loved to have more courses that are out-of-the-way and/or extremely private - courses that we can only dream about playing!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fabulous Find!
Top Notch Golf and World Travel...what more could a serious golfer want?
This book is a fabulous find and an inspired gift you will be proud to share with a golfer you love.Even as a non golfer, I enjoyed the travels insights and the background on how each course was created. It provided me a whole new appreciation for the game and the "art" of golf course creation.

Book Description

A detailed plan for conquering the FEAR that sabotages swings and ruins psyches, from the pioneering psychologist whose techniques have benefited Davis Love III, Justin Leonard, and numerous other world-class golfers.

As Jack Nicklaus once observed, fear is the golfer’s greatest enemy, inspiring Tiger Woods to "refuse" to give in to this debilitating emotion. It can turn professionals into jelly and dominate the games of most amateurs. It alters swing paths, causes “tap-in” putts to go awry, and transforms a golfer from a brilliant shot-maker on the practice range into an incompetent hack on the course.

Most golfers understand this, but do not have the tools to overcome it. That’s where Dr. Gio Valiante comes in. A pioneering sports psychologist, Valiante has studied the sources of an athlete’s fear, investigated the physiological and neurological impact of fear on performance, and, most important of all, developed a groundbreaking program for conquering it. With Valiante's help and by applying Fearless Golf, Justin Leonard went from three consecutive missed cuts to three consecutive top tens, and Chad Campbell recently moved from 98th in the world to 7th. Davis Love III went from zero wins in 2002 to four wins in 2003, and Chris DiMarco made the 2004 Ryder Cup Team.

Emphasizing the need to replace a fixation-on-results with a commitment to mastery of one’s body and one's mind, Valiante’s approach will not only help golfers reach their true potential, it will make playing every round fun again. Through concrete confidence and mastery drills, he presents specific ways readers can break free of fear’s grasp and perform at their best—even under the most extreme pressure.

With detailed quotes and anecdotes given exclusively to Dr. Valiante from the best players in the game—including Jack Nicklaus, Ernie Els, and other tour professionals, Fearless Golf is the ultimate guide to the mental game, the hottest topic in golf today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fearless Golf sets you straight
Fearless Golf is a total transformation of our attitude about golf. It is simple but gives you peace of mind when playing with only concern for your personal game. When practiced, Fearless Golf not only greatly enhances your game but also how you feel and enjoy the great game. The philosophy applies not only to golf but to all aspects of life. The major point of the book is driven home relentlessly, often to the point of redundancy. This is not a one time read. Keep it in sight at all times and go back to it over and over.

Excellent book on the mental game.Good tips.Book was shipped promptly and was in better condition than stated.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Message, Just Way Too Long...
Being a golfer who can shoot in the 70's on one day, then in the 90's the next, I figured the best thing I could add to my bag was a book or several on the mental aspects of the game. And, this is one of the most useful I've read. The author applies Professor Albert Bandura's credible concept of self-efficacy to a game that is oh so mental (I suggest you read Bandura's 1994 hallmark paper entitled "Self-efficacy" for more insight).Clearly, this book is helping me go lower and play more consistently. My primary criticism of the book is that the author takes way too long to deliver the message.I was compelled to skip pages containing endless examples and redundant messages.I guess Valiante wanted to hit the 200 page standard to justify the price, but he could have written it in 50 pages.

Nonetheless, if you experience rather wild fluctuations in performance, this book will likely ring true for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hang in there.
OK, it started badly for me. The first chapter is somewhat repetitive.

I persisted and found to my delight a book that is valuable, well written andinsightful. I don't know what happened in the writing of this book but I found the start nausiating and the rest of the book to be marvellous.

Dr Valiante has changed my focus from the purely mechanical to include the mental side in my swing preparation. My golf swing has become smoother, more focused, more targeted and more confident.

5-0 out of 5 stars Consciously Unconscious
Really relax when you play golf.Among other useful tips, this book will teach you how reducing your grip pressure will improve your shot. ... Read more

I'm a multi sport athlete who trains all year round regardless of what sport I play. I bought a few of these Ultimate Guide to Weight Training books, and they definitely helped me train specifically for the different sports that I play. Then about a year later I received an email from amazon that there was a new edition out. These upgraded editions are even better than the originals, with more articles and a lot more sport-specific information. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who plays a lot of sports or wants to specifically focus on training for one sport in particular.

In life you never really know when you might meet someone who will change your life. And more importantly you never know when your influence might change another. This book is about influence. It is about a man who lived in a simple place but had extraordinary insight. He also had something else on his side.He had time; time to invest himself in the life of another who was lost on his journey. This story is based on the thousands of athletes I have counseled and the great mentors and teachers from whom I have learned. I have brought my twenty plus years of peak performance coaching together and compressed them into a story of two fictitious characters; a rancher with a passion for teaching truth and a young golf professional at the end of his rope. They represent each of us in the various stages of growth. For in life we must be willing to coach and be coached, either one alone will leave us empty. ... Read more

This is an awesome book for any golfer at any level of play.I found this to be an interesting format (a novel) to give vital information on improving a person's golf game.A good read and one that you should pass to a friend or relative! They'll thank you. It's helped me think differently and relax when I play. I'm sure it will improve my scores.

5-0 out of 5 stars See it, feel it, trust it
This is my all time favorite book about golf - and life! I have read this book numerous times, and have recently shared it with my two children ages 8 and 12 who are junior golfers. On the surface, Golf's Sacred Journey is a story of an aspiring golfer dealing with the insecurities, frustrations, and failures of trying to make it as a professional golfer. But the deeper message in the book is how we travel through life, and how we touch others is the true measure of success. You can tell the true character of a person more by how they deal with adversity, challenges and failures, than by their golf score.

Each chapter is a lesson about life, and Dr. Cook uses the metaphor of golf to clearly illustrate how our decisions and convictions have brought us to the place we now reside. Patience, humility, forgiveness, and love will help us all to have a rich and rewarding life, and will also help us with our golf games. Plan and visualize your life's journey, practice patience and balance, and hold on to truth and tradition and you will live your greatest dreams.

See it, feel it, trust it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Golf Specific Workout Circuit
We've learned that our bodies after awhile get used to same exercises and so diminishing returns creep in.This golf specific trainer has developed a circuit oriented training schedule specifically targeted for golf muscles and conditioning them.

One needs to invest in some equipment or have it available at workout facility, i.e. physioball, medicine ball, resistance bands, soccer ball, dumbbells, etc. The investment for these is not large, but is necessary to do most of these. Also, some of the exercises look to an appartus found in gym settings where pully resistance machines are available.

The cycle of eleven days has some rest in it, and room for golf and cardiovascular work which is nice. The rotation has increasing rep schedules and stepped up exercises on many of the stretches.

There is also a great pre-round stretch routine, as well as some recommened range drills. Good photo illustrations and instructions add greatly to the usability.

For most all golfers this is great workout routine, and results will follow after your first eleven day cycle, and multiply after continuous recycling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great help for beginners
I am a beginner "older" golfer and didn't feel in very good shape for golfing. The muscles used for the golf swing are very different than what we usually use. This book was excellent for showing me stretches to get my body in shape. What I especially like about it is that it also gives really good golf tips as well as staying in shape tips.I highly recommend it for anyone just starting out golfing or experienced golfers as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful to me...
As an ACE-certified personal trainerwho has no knowledge of golf with a client interested in improving their golf game, this book was very helpful to me.It not only showed me what steps a golfer needs to make for set-up, swing, etc., it also showed me exercises to specifically help in each step. The book shows how to perform these sports-specific exercises and tells me why my client needs to do them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Golf's Hidden Secret
I've read a lot of instructional books (Hogan, Flick, Leadbetter, etc.).They all make it clear what you need to do to strike the ball well, but it doesen't matter if you know what to do mentally if your body can't get you there.Cindy's book is fantastic.I've been using it for about a month, and I've never hit the ball so well. The best thing about her approach is that once you start getting your muscles in "golf shape" you don't have to think when you're over the ball. The training program provides you with all of that much talked about (but seldom acheived) correct muscle memory. Here's how I know this is the real deal.Every other instruction technique I've ever used worked fine until I got to my driver, but after follwing Reid's program I've felt comfortable (and getting much better results) with the driver. Her system works.I also like it because, unlike other golf exercise programs I've tried, Cindy doesn't just give you one routine and expect you to do the same thing day after day. It's an 11 day program with something different every day.You won't be in "golf shape" in 11 days, but you simply start a new cycle over again once you've completed the 11 day program. In addition, the fact that she ties the program to individual positions is a great motivator. You can work on the "one piece takeway" without leaving the cofines of your home, and the best thing about it is that by doing the exercises you know you're working out the correct muscles to accomplsh the task (instead of going to the driving range, repeating the same bad swing, and developing incorrect muscle memmory). If you want to improve your game get "Golf Shape" today. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Easy Read
I liked this book because it was very easy to read. Many of the tips were useful for me. My only hesitation for a five star rating were the numerous stories about how amazing Tiger is. I know he is amazing I don't need him to tell me that throughout the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book...
If you are a fan of Tiger and serious about Golf you need to get this book...I definitely liked the quality of the illustrations... Quality pictures and explanations helped me improve my swing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The way to play golf
Thirteen major championships, 59 PGA Tour Wins, $73,536,709 in PGA Career earnings, those are just a few of the things Tiger Woods has accomplished during his career as a professional golfer. His success has been based on the way he plays the game with sound fundamentals and a calm mind set. In How I Play Golf Tiger explains in detail how to prepare your body and mind to play golf before you ever step on the course. He gives his insights and routines for putting, chipping, driving, and escaping from bunkers. This book starts with the green and ends back at the tee the way he learned to play one step at a time.

Not many players can say they have a 2 handicap, even less can say they have a scratch handicap, only obout the top percent can say that they acomplished these feats at age 13. Tiger Woods was that age when he had a scratch handicap. My point is that Tiger is one of the best and the way he playes is the best of our time. If you want to learn to play like the top one percent buy this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Sports History Read!
The Match: The Day the Game of Golf Changed Forever

This is not just one of the finest golf books or sports books I have read in many years but a piece of seriously great story telling. I won't detail what the book is about -- others have done that here quite well. I will say that my opinion of Hogan, Nelson, Ward and Venturi -- lifelong heroes all -- has shot to even loftier heights. I agree with some of the other reviewers -- this book moved me to tears at times. If you liked "The Greatest Game Ever Played," you owe yourself this lovely tome.

I have always dreamed of playing one of the great courses on the Monterey Peninsula and always thought that Pebble Beach would be my choice for that ultimate experience. After reading this, I think I would die a happy man if I could experience Cyprus Point. The story pivots around Alistair MacKenzie's masterpiece by the sea. And while I fantasize -- what would it be like to see Tiger play Ben and Byron in their primes? Who would you bet on? And if you by chance read this Ken Venturi -- God bless you and thanks for sharing your memories here and on CBS for so many wonderful years. I miss your steady voice on Sunday afternoons.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wrong title.
This book was easy to read and very rich with golf history.I don't agree with the title, though, because the game of golf didn't really change because of The Match.I still enjoyed it, though, and have already passed it on to one of my golf buddies.Frost provides some solid background of the key players. Finally, I think that the book went on about 2 chapters too long.

2-0 out of 5 stars Book was fine, Condition of Book Bad!
I received the book and immediately opened it up to find multiple ink blotches on approximately 25 pages. Most were in the front of the book, but occasionally another inked page would pop up throughout the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A quick read
I liked the book. I finished it in two days and recommended it to my friends.

That being said, I would have liked a map or photos of the course. Mr. Frost's descriptions are fine, but an illustrated approach would have been better. I went online and printed a course map to give me a better idea of the course layout.

The biography of each of the players was OK. Hogan's and Nelson's stories are well known and nothing is added to them. He could have compressed Hogan's to one chapter instead of two. Venturi and Ward was interesting.

More information on the golf clubs and ball might have added to the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars the match
As good as it gets.A quick and great read, if you are inclined to like the game. ... Read more

Esalen Institute founder Michael Murphy's divine meditation on the royal and ancient game defied categorization when it was first published in 1972, and it still does. Instantly hailed as a classic, Golf in the Kingdom is an altogether unique confluence of fiction, philosophy, myth, mysticism, enchantment, and golf instruction. The central character is a wily Scotsman named Shivas Irons, a golf professional by vocation and a shaman by design, whom Murphy, as participant in his own novel, meets in 1956 on the links of Burningbush, in Fife.Thestory of their round of golf together culminates in a wild night of whiskey and wisdom where, as Shivas demonstrates how the swing reflects the soul, their golf quite literally takes on a metaphysical glow. The events alter not only Murphy's game, but they also radicallyalter his mind and inner vision; it's truly unforgettable. For a golfer, Murphy's masterpieceis as essential as a set of clubs.Book Description
The perennially bestselling golf title, Golf in the Kingdom, hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as the "masterpiece on the mysticism of golf," is a wonderfully told romp through the Scottish links, the most beautiful and challenging golf courses in the world where, truly, anything is possible. This audio discusses the essential deep truths about the game of golf and also expands on some new and extremely unique approaches to golf instruction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Golf in the Kingdom
Book arrived on time in the condition as described the seller.Excellent book!! Great reading like Peter Jacobsen said in his book.

2-0 out of 5 stars A little too far "out there"!
I made it through the first half of the book, which is a narrative of the golfing adventure of the author with Shivas Irons, a pro at the Burningbush golf course in Scotland.Even this part of the book is a fairly strange read, dealing with the ultimate meaning of life as it realtes to golf, but involving way too much mysticism.

The second half, which is supposed to be the author's notes about the golfing philosophy of Shivas Irons, was just not readable to me.I just had way too many other books on my reading list to spend any more time trying to fight my way through this stuff!

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book

This is wonderful but I also loved A Golfers DreamA Golfer's Dream

5-0 out of 5 stars Michael Murphy:Revolutionary Thinker
I met Michael Murphy in the late 1960's.The charismatic leader of the human potential movement captured my attention and admiration immediately.Mr. Murphy was one of those characters who sparkle with mystical magic. His life reads like a calendar of magical events. At every turn he seems to either run into or encounter the most provocative people one can imagine:Steinbeck, Spiegelberg, Brodie, Price, Aurobindo, Thompson, Maslow, and many, many more.
With the publication of Golf in the Kingdom (His first book), he managed to create a new movement, which came to be known as The Sport and Yoga Movement. The book is a delightful integration of sport, mysticism, and yoga, with a whole lot of magic sprinkled between the lines.I am amazed at its dissenters and critics. It is not "junk" as some need to say.For those of you who say it is "not for golfers", I think I can safely assume that you are regularly shooting twenty to thirty over par. There are some that say that this is just another worn-out philosophical rag, trying to integrate what's common, and I would think for them mundane, with the paranormal and mystical energies that hover all around us.To them, I would say that there is a shread of truth to their thoughts.I would like to ask those people to provide me with any literary references, expousing this thesis, that pre-date Mr. Murphy's book. For those that claim that this is just another clever contrivance for making a quick buck, I would say you are about as far off the mark as those that dismiss the book as "junk".Mr. Murphy was born wealthy. At some point in his life he inherited a large sum of money, most of which he either donated or spent in efforts to enhance the human condition. When I met the man, I believe that it was in 1969, he was driving an aged 1962, six cylinder, stick shift Cheverolet. He had bought the car new, and at that time felt that he could get at least another ten years out of it.
Bravo, Michael.Bravo for Golf in the Kingdom, and bravo for a life well lived.

2-0 out of 5 stars An acidhead's philosophizing of golf
This was Out There. I'm not sure if it is for burnout golfers or just burnouts. I don't think I would classify this as a sports book, more like bad philosophy. I couldn't even believe in the main character, Shivas, I was too aware of his being a mouthpiece for Murphy's attempts to revolutionize one's conceptualization of golf...or life...or something like that...I still don't know. What the heck was his point?? ... Read more

Book Description
The acclaimed author of Back Rx and Arthritis Rx (more than 50,000 combined copies in print) returns with the first book fully devoted to improving your golf game and reducing pain.

Many recreational and professional golfers suffer from some form of lower back pain. Conventional wisdom suggests that the violent, twisting nature of the golf swing, which puts undue stress on the spine, is the sole culprit. But research conducted by sports-medicine specialist Vijay Vad, M.D., with PGA Tour pros, recently published in the prestigious American Journal of Sports Medicine, reveals that the swing is only one of several factors. Applying Dr. Vad’s winning combination of mind/body wisdom and medical expertise to the game of golf, Golf Rx shares his cutting-edge findings and addresses such topics as:
• The proper body mechanics for a stable golf swing
• Power tips to improve driving
• Eighteen essential stretches for eighteen holes
• Five-minute warm-up and cool-down routines
• Keeping an aging body in great shape
• Common golf injuries—and how to resume activity
• The Golf Rx exercise series

Combining the best of Pilates, golf-specific conditioning, and physical therapy, Dr. Vad’s easy to follow exercise program contains three series that will speed recovery from the most common golfers’ injuries, help reduce future injuries, and enhance performance by building swing specific flexibility, strength, stamina, and balance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Necessary reading for golfers.
I wish I'd read this book 45 years ago, when I started playing golf. If you're a serious golfer -- one who wants to play your best, and works toward that goal -- you have a choice: get into a good flexibility and strengthening program, or be prepared to spend some really painful time in bed, not playing golf in beautiful weather.
This book provides what you need to lower the likelihood of encountering the pain and misery of golf-related back problems. There are no guarantees in life, but it has transformed golf for this 67-year old.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good addition to your bookshelf!
Taking care of your body will ensure many more years of good golf. This book is a great start, with a simple 15 minute program to keep you (and your game) in good shape!

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable for the aging golfer (and even the young ones)
Unlike many such books, this one is excellent and serious. Follow Dr. Vad's strictures and you may yet live to shoot your age!

5-0 out of 5 stars Golf Strength and Conditioning
It was a very easy read. Very little golf stuff but lots of easy exercises to do and could be done in under 20 minutes for better fitness. It has three levels of difficulties. Yes, to golf better, improve on strength and flexibility as the explosive force in a golf swing could result in injury if we are not properly conditioned, especially weekend warriors. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Unlightening
Having read Golf in the Kingdom, and Inner Game of Golf some time ago, I looked forward to this more recent book on mental aspect of golf.
My handicap has drifted up from 3 to 6 over the last year, so I was looking for a fresh approach. The day after reading the first 130 pages, I resolved to play without fear, not be upset by bad shots, and enjoy my playing partners.
With OB left, trees to the right, I striped my drive on the 440 yd par 4, followed by a 5 iron to 8 feet, and drained the putt. What a great book!
Four hours later I found myself in the clubhouse having shot a 90 for the first time in over 20 years, with four OBs and five 3 putts.
It's a good thing that "looking good" was no longer important to me, as I endured the ribbing, jabs and outright taunts of several of my fellow players.
I'll finish the book. But most likely you'll find it listed on the Used Books here very shortly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening Book on Golf
This is an excellent presentation of the spiritual side of the game.Filled with unique drills designed to bring out the "inner athlete" in us all, Showmaker has created a classic exploration of the real reasons we should all be enjoying the game of golf.

Truly a mind-opening read - great for golfers and instructors alike

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reading
Extraordinary Golf: The Art of Possible is a book that anyone who plays the game of golf should read.I wish I could have read it or something near it twenty five years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not read yet.
Book was for my husband and was not read yet, but he loved that I got it for him...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book won't be to everyone's taste. If you are looking for quick tips on improving your game, look elsewhere. If, however, you are looking for the secret to genuinely enjoying the golf game you have, and improving your attitude on the course, it's a wonderful book. I've heard golf called a good walk spoiled, but this book points to how it can be fresh and enjoyable again. ... Read more
