Book Description
The Seven Principles of Golf are essential to the game of the seasoned professional as well as the beginning golfer.”—Jerry Kelly, PGA Tour Professional

Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book meets The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People

In The Seven Principles of Golf, Darrin Gee, the golf industry’s most innovative instructor, brings us a ground-breaking book destined to be a classic akin to Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book and Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf. This inspirational golf instruction book offers Gee’s simple yet profoundly powerful mental and inner approach to golf mastery. Proven successful by golfers of all levels, including PGA Tour professionals, at Gee’s nationally recognized Spirit of Golf Academy, his Seven Principles of Golf blend together timeless concepts into a dynamic and effective step-by-step process leading to better shots, lower scores, and more fun.

Beyond a coach or a sports psychologist, Gee is a true philosopher of golf—and of life. His instructional method embraces a golfer’s total performance, and each chapter applies the same principles taught in golf to personal and professional life. In presenting techniques for quieting the mind, enhancing awareness, visualizing each shot, developing pre-shot rituals, and finding one’s natural swing, Gee prescribes a series of exercises to be performed on and off the golf course. This eloquent and motivational book promises to bring about dramatic changes not only in one’s golf game, but in one’s personal and professional life as well. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Why?
The topics in this book have been covered before and much better by other authors in other works, try "Fearless Golf" by Gio Valiante, and "Every Shot Must Have A Purpose" by Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriot for real meaty, thoughtful treatises on the psychological challenges of golf.

I couldn't find an original thought in the whole book. It's a collection of vague cliches relayed in a trite style with loose but obvious links to non-golf situations.

Amazon suggested I'd like it from my previous buying choices. They were wrong.Don't waste your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this for every golfer you know!
This little green book is a terrific instructional guide for learning how to master the mental aspect of golf and then use it to improve your life. It applies a lot of Buddhist principles to golf (ex. Be present = take it one shot at a time), but Gee does an excellent job of balancing abstract thought with concrete exercises and practical tips (accompanied by step-by-step illustrations), and reinforces his points with anecdotes about his students, himself, and even PGA stars. The second part of each chapter is devoted to how to use these concepts to improve your enjoyment of life.

Gee writes in a straightforward, nurturing manner - it's almost as if he's being patient and gentle because he knows how volatile golfers can be! Actually, he knows it first-hand because he also teaches golfers on the Big Island at the Spirit of Golf Academy, which he founded.

This book is going to make Christmas shopping easy this year!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Read this book on vacation . Returned home to play golf and shot my lowest round ever 83 from just applying the exercises included in the book.Buy it Now!!!
Update Now 3 rounds in a row low 80's . I have never done that before this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chico, California Native Writes on Mastering Golf's Inner Game
The Oakmont course was tough. Angel Cabrera seemed to falter on holes 16 and 17 in the 2007 U.S. Open, but on 18, according to Sports Illustrated's Gary Van Sickle, "he hit the gutsiest tee shot of his life & and made the most important par of his life. He earned the trophy."

In Chico, California not long ago, 102-year-old Elsie McLean hit a pretty gutsy hole in one, becoming, according to National Public Radio, "the oldest golfer ever to score an ace on a regulation course." What's the secret? Former Chicoan Darrin Gee says successful golfers know how to play the inner game as well as the outer one.

Though now living on the Big Island of Hawaii with his wife, novelist Darien Hsu Gee, and their two children, Darrin writes that he grew up in Chico, attended Sierra View Elementary and Bidwell Junior High and graduated from Pleasant Valley High School. I did a guest clinic at Bidwell Golf Course a few of years ago for the members and other Chico residents."

Bothered by his own lack of progress in the game, he realized he was "trying too hard." Meditation and yoga helped him let go, and in 2000 he established Darrin Gee's Spirit of Golf Academy in Hawaii. From his experiences has come "The Seven Principles of Golf: Mastering the Mental Game On and Off the Golf Course" ($16.95 in hardcover from Stewart, Tabori & Chang). The book is beautifully illustrated with line drawings of simple golf exercises.

He begins the book with a question. How long does it take to play a round of golf? Four hours is average but, since each actual shot takes just a few seconds, maybe only three minutes are really devoted to swinging the club. It follows that "a golfer only needs to concentrate for a few seconds at a time & one shot at a time." Gee calls this the "inner game" "as it implies more than just mental mastery; sometimes the best thing you can do for your game is to get out of your head and trust your body."

So "get grounded" by finding the body's balance as you prepare the swing. "Feel the shot," "visualize it," and "find your natural swing." Develop a modest "pre-shot ritual" and "play one shot at a time."

Realize "golf is a journey" -- and so is life.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Play with Inspiration
I boughtDarrin Gee's "Seven Principles of Golf" for my Dad for Father's Day. I started flipping through itand to my great surprise, this was not only a golf book but a book on living. I read the entire book, cover to cover in one day and thoroughly enjoyed Darrin's insights into how playing an inspired game of golf is impacted by living an inspired life. Playing one shot at a time and savoring each precious moment of life spoke volumes. Thanks for taking the risk by living with passion and showing us the way. Now I am thinking of learning how to play golf. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you could have only one golf book this would be the one.
There are several really good golf books out there. But if I had to choose only one this would be it simply because it has all the instruction elements you need on which to build a solid swing and learn to play better golf. But more importantly is this that John Jacobs keeps it simple and to the point. Great book would recommend to any golfer especially those just starting out or struggling with consistency.

4-0 out of 5 stars practical golf
Practical Golf is a very good guide to building a solid golf swing. John
Jacobs, the author ,is a wonderful teacher and has keen insight into what
it take to hit good solid golf shots. The book is a reference book to
go back to when you are having trouble with your swing. Practical Golf
is one of the best book on golf I have ever read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book to have.
If you are a beginer or an experienced golfer, this is a good book to have. It has the right fundimentals to get on track with a good solid golf game. If you want to improve your game, or just beginning, I definetley recamend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 'Go To' guide for golfers
I first discovered this book in the early `90's, when I was just beginning in the game of golf.Applying the learnings from this book allowed me to cut 10 strokes off my game within 3 weeks. At that time, I had a handicap of about 30 - which quickly dropped to 20.Now, many years later, my handicap is 6.

I still use this guide on a regular basis. When my game encounters problems, I pull out the book to diagnose and solve them.

Over the years I have given copies of this book to more than 30 of my clients and friends - all who share my love of the game.Everyone who has received it shares my opinion of the usefulness of this book and says it has significantly helped their game.

There is no question that John Jacobs knows the golf swing and knows how to improve all aspects of your game. The book is written in an easy-to-understand fashion with excellent illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners...
I never really understood the real purpose of the "golf swing."Well my questions were finally answerd after the first twenty pages of this book. It explains the Geomitry of the game, and brakes it down into basics, "that are so easy a caveman could do it"!!

If you really want to understand and get good at golf, this is the book for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for serious golfer
I heard about this book after having played golf for 12 years.I wish I had gotten it back when I first started. It has all the basic fundamentals one should know and is very easy to read and apply to your game. The book helped me understand the golf swing much better and in more detail then ever before. For the price you must get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I ordered the book as a gift and it was just like new when I received it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Used this to learn how to win
I used the original parts of this book as released by Golf Digest in the 70's and later. This book is updated and includes essential components covering all aspects of the basics and beyond. Nicklaus is excellent at describing the comprehensive components of the golf swing in general and with the various situations you'll find yourself in around the course.

Jack Nicklaus isn't usually thought of as one of the all time great instructors, but his constant attention throughout his life to the game, the swing, the equipment and to instructors, means that he has a "Top 10" ability as an instructor to get the ideas across clearly, and to help you avoid pitfalls. Many instructors are just not so fully aware of the scope of the related issues. Jack had to. He had to play and his intention was to win. Nothing was left to guesswork.

I find that Nicklaus' description of the full swing is essential to understanding the various points in the swing IN MOTION. He doesn't need gadgets, he uses diagrams and sketches to show you. He's always dealing with how one thing leads to another. The golf swing is not just the person, it's weight shift, the club in relation to the hands, the path of the club, and a few abstract concepts that Nicklaus is excellent at keeping clear and meaningful.

I HIGHLY recommend this book to all golfers who have handicaps greater than about 2. Take these instructions, run them through 100 shots on the course and realize how a leading, proven, brilliant golfer and instructor can point out a few things that could help you. For anyone starting the game, for anyone who has reached a sticking point and can't seem to improve, and for those who want to have more fun and just hit the ball cleanly more and don't really worry about the score......all of you will gain a great deal by getting the information in this book.

Women: Nicklaus deals with the game of golf and the swing from the basics onward. I've seen plenty of women golf and an really happy with the LPGA quality. Get this book and take it to the practice range and then take notes onto the course. Nicklaus has a well-balanced approach to the entire game and he communicates brilliantly. If you find something that he says doesn't quite match how you swing or something like that, at least you have bounced an idea of the all-time greatest player, and then when you talk to another instructor who can deal with you personally, you have a FAR CLEARER idea of some issues you can improve and how to deal with them. So, no, Nicklaus' book, for women, isn't 100% applicable, but I'd bet it's at least 95% applicable! His approach is so time-tested and he is very well informed about all aspects of the swing, the clubs, the variety of people's swing styles, builds, the equipment and the situations on the course that you can't go wrong here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I started golfing last summer with the aid of a co-worker to help get me started.Once school started back up I found myself going to the driving range much more often the he could meet me there for guidance; I knew that if I wanted my game to progress I would either need to find another trainer or turn to a book.Concidering this book is less then 20$ and a trainer can be around 100$ a session, I opted for the book.

Immediatley after taking suggestions from grip, stance, swingplane, and posture my game improved immensley. My slice is now undercontrol and I get an extra 20 yrds out of my irons. The book has helpfull illustrations that really put some of the dynamics of this game into perspective.

I recomend this to anyone who is trying to either start golfing or even for avid golfers who are trying to tweak there play styles and shake some bad golf habits. This book has truly been a golf blessing. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, but there are better books out there
I am a 24 year former collegiate golfer, and I thought this book does a decent job of describing good stretches to help loosen you up, but I think there are better resources out there.Don't get me wrong if you were to follow this routine you would probably see results, but I would take a look at Core Performance Golf before this one.

I would recommend flipping through this book before purchasing, because I only found a couple pieces of information / exercises that I thought were beneficial that I didn't already know. Plus, it kind of looks like it was published / written about 10 years ago.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dissappointed
I like the concept of the book and thought the exercises were very worthwhile but the poor writing quality made it very difficult to follow and the DVD was certainly not of the quality I would expect.I have read several books on golf specific fitness and this one is at the bottom of the list.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works for me
Easy to understand and follow. When I use the stretches in this book I actually play a little better, do not tire as much, and am not as stiff the day after. I am 60 so I need to keep limber. Of course the key is to stretch regularly, not just the day you play.

2-0 out of 5 stars The title was the best part
The title was the best part for this book and the free dvd was lame.

2-0 out of 5 stars Application to Golf Too Sketchy
This is a very good fitness book. Now that I've read a couple of others on Golf Fitness, I think this one has good strengthening & stretching exercises for golfers. My chief criticism is that its applicability to different aspects of the game of golf is too sketchy for golfers who don't understand how fitness will benefit their game and their overall health and well-being.The best golf fitness book I've read is Cindy Reid's book, GET YOURSELF IN GOLF SHAPE, which I HIGHLY recommend over this one. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Some good tips
This book has some good tips on the golf swing, but I wouldn't call it a must read. It also shows a number of swing faults and how to prevent them.

It does have one of the best descriptions on how to grip the golf club of any book I've read. That one section makes it worth the money.

It does assume there is only one correct system for swinging the golf club (the modern, coiling swing). If you use another swing method (swing axis, traditional swing) some of the tips may not apply.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not again!!!
I saw Mr. Bradley on Golf Channel Academy Live and was impressed.I then got online and waited until his book price got low enough for me to want to buy it. The other reviews seemed overwhelmingly good and every one was impressed. I got it finally. What a let down. While the pictures are great and yet disturbing in some cases I have yet to complete reading it.
I cannot get past Mr. Bradley's overanalysis of the whole swing process. If you buy anything (and I don't mean to endorse) getanything by A.J. Bonar or just to go your pro and get at least 2 lessons.Golf does not have to be Rocket science although Mr. Bradley seems to write as though it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars best golf information
This is a must read book for every golfer. Especially mid handicapers (10- 15). He focuses on how the golf swing should feel, from grip to impact and completion of swing. He gives excellent examples for the feel, especially feather feel. I am reading this book every chance I get, I bet you will to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very analytical book - good pictures
I found the pictures in this book helpfull - they also look pretty cool. Some of the explanations of the optimal body postures are not straightforward and they require a second or a third reading - however this is a compliment since this book is not over-simplifying things - the author makes an effort explaining all the subtilities of golf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Long Over Due
The brilliance of this book is in the fact that it uses pictures to explain the golf swing. As humans we think in pictures anyway and is why words alone are often a waste of time. Bradely also uses words along with the pictures but this only adds to the power those pictures have to emblazen the proper feel into the golf swing. Telling someone to feel that they have a nail driven through both hands to create a great grip is not as lasting as seeing the actual picture. ... Read more

Book Description
The legendary golf instructional, available again. This is, along with Harvey Penick's Little Red Book, THE book Golf professionals turn to.

"Thirty years ago I was recommending Joe Dante's book The Four Magic Moves To Winning Golf as a must read for aspiring PGA professionals.  What Dante said in '62 has influenced many of the game's finest teachers.  Dante was a visionary."--Gary Wiren, author of New Golf Mind

When published, The Four Magic Moves To Winning Golf   radically changed the way many players thought about the golf swing.  Dante's system showed how simple it was to improve one's game, and at the same time gave the golfer one of the most comprehensive analyses of swing mechanics ever published.  Now, thirty-three years after its original publication, Main Street is proud to reissue this classic instructional. Dante begins by sweeping out all the misconceptions of the game.  "If good golf is to be learned and the poor player is to improve, a purging must take place, painful as it may be." Dante discusses a few basics of grip and stance, and then he gets to the heart of his book, the four magic moves.  As he reveals each of the moves, Dante focuses on the physical checkpoints so that any golfer can make sure that his or her swing is on the right track.

The Four Magic Moves To Winning Golf is straightforward and easy to understand, yet unlike other golf books it is irreverent and audacious in its approach to mastering the game.  The publication of this rediscovered classic is sure to establish Joe Dante's reputation as one of golf's greatest teachers. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Its just alright
There is a lot of rehashed material in this book and frankly its a little hard to read and not terribly insightful. I've read many many many golf books over the years and this one has some good information in it but it takes way too long to get to the point sometimes. Also, I think some of the wrist techniques are outdated and really have to be developed with perfect timing. A decent book for Novice and better golfers but NOT recommended for beginners. Their is no "magic" here folks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shazamm . . .
Approaching sixty, for some godforsaken reason I have determined to construct a serviceable golf swing. It appears that no one book will satisfy that intention, rather one must sort through and experiment with what the literature provides. That said, the one constant during my erratic golf career, other than high scores, has been a wicked, wicked slice. It is a big reason I have only played the game some ten times in the past twenty five years, the greens fees here in Japan being another.Joe Dante's Magic Move #1 has cured me of it.Whether the 'backward wrist break' has driven a stake through Banana's evil heart remains to be seen, but each trip down to Hanazato Golf confirms that MY SLICE IS DEAD.Anyway, I think so.Joe seems to revel in the pain inducing awkwardness of the Magic Moves and the 'wrist break' has indeed caused a dull ache in my hands and forearms. One hopes it will go away.In the meantime I'm enjoying sliceless golf shots and even the occasional draw. The rest of the 'magic moves' are yours for the taking; I'm not so sure about them.I suppose any book which cures someone of a slice should get five stars but it's all so relative. What worked for me may not for you.But don't forget Fred Shoemaker's book.Or Jim McLellan's video! And good luck!

1-0 out of 5 stars Back injury waiting to happen
If you follow this you will get back pain and risk ending up like Fred Couples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally in the position to go after it
I bought Dante's book after connecting in spirit with the other customers here who bought it, found it worked, and shared their views.I'd watch the pros on TV and was always intrigued by that great position at the top with the flat wrist and the first move down.Getting the whole thing from the dead start to the top is a process that has never been adequately conveyed to me and absorbed by me...until I read this book. The meticulous treatment of the first move with the early wrist break to the top is a masterpiece of instruction for the lost soul. Don't rush your time spent reading and practicing Move Uno. Once you feel that sensation of owning your grip on the club with the hands set solid and perfectly at the top of your coil, you're about ready to trust Dante with your firstborn. Ahhh...so THIS is what a player's swing actually feels like.

4-0 out of 5 stars The alternative golf swing that works
I am a golf instructor based in New Zealand and purchased the book based on what I had read on some internet sites. The book advocated an early wrist break that is not commonly taught or known about.

Dan Shaugers/Mike Austin "How to Kill the Ball" and "21st Century Golf Swing" which I am an accredited teacher..... are the only other books that you will read that teach such an action with the wrists. Not only that we both teach lateral movements of the hips.

If you have purchased Dan's books you will certainly enjoy reading about Joe Dante's method. ... Read more

My golf foursome sought an aide to planning our golf trip to Scotland. We found it in Golf In Scotland. We followed his advice down to using the rental car agency he recommended and arranging an advance tee time at the Old Course. The result was a perfect trip that cost us about $2600 instead of the $5,000 that we were quoted by one of those purchased trip packages.Besides, we had the fun of planning the trip ourselves. He even arranged for great weather.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Scotland Golf
A little over a year ago, I bought this book as I was going to plan a trip to Scotland with 7 other friends and I wanted to research the best courses to play for a week long trip.I read the book quickly and settled on a number of courses to play.I sent Allan Ferguson an email and he quickly responded and actually helped me coordinate the trip.We got back about 6 weeks ago and it was the most amazing trip that I have ever been on.Not only did the book and Allan's recommendations of courses come in handy, but also he instructed and helped me (as mentioned in his book) coordinate the trip much much cheaper than if I had used one of the well known, but over priced golf travel agencies such as Perry Golf.Quite simply, there isn't a better book on golf in Scotland and if you are thinking about planning a trip, Allan's services or recommendations will come in handy to save you plenty of cash on your trip.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Trip Planner
Unless you're being comped by a lobbyist on your next golf trip to Scotland, buy this book.Ferguson provides accurate and updated information; I found his reviews of courses and places to stay spot on.If you're the type of traveller who prefers the "hidden gems" instead of doing a "grand tour", you will find this book especially useful.I used this book to plan a recent golf trip to Scotland, and it was thoroughly enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spot on!
Quite simply, Allan Ferguson "gets it." His logistical knowledge, the people, places, things to do when you're not golfing, the courses, and even hole-by-hole descriptions are invaluable. His sensibilities mirror my own, and that of my group. I have successfully used this book to plan two trips of a lifetime. Like Allan says, you can use this book to travel to Scotland twice for less than the cost of one trip by the tour operators. ... Read more

Book Description

If you know anything at all about John Daly—and if you don't, what in the hell are you doing with this book in your hands?—you know he approaches the game of golf from an, uh, slightly different perspective than your average two-time major winner.

How different? Well, for starters, Long John thinks the PGA Tour ought to permit Bermuda shorts, make carts mandatory, let him wear his hair down to his butt if he wants to, and strip-search tournament patrons at the entrance gate to keep cameras and cell phones off the course.

In Golf My Own Damn Way, you'll take a virtual ride on Big John's magic bus as he tells you the best way to grip it so you can rip it. Looking for a sure cure to bunkerphobia? It's here. A one-hour golf lesson that's 100 percent guaranteed to make you a better golfer? Ditto. Want to know why you should occasionally leave your big dog in your trunk, how to watch your weight, and what golf and sex have in common? You came to the right book.

And while he's busy explaining all these and many other things, Daly also tells you why you should keep your head out of the game, let your belly lead your hands, listen to your right foot, check your ball position—and buy a hybrid (the club, not the car).

Following in the spike prints of his 2006 bestselling autobiography, My Life In and Out of the Rough, Golf My Own Damn Way is an off-the-wall and intensely personal yet imminently practical and accessible tip sheet on how to cut ten strokes off your score—now.

Two things are certain: you've never seen a golf instructional book quite like this one, and you'll never need another one.

Fairways and greens, Pard!

I was reading this book in the bookstore and found a lot of good information....Before reading the book I was hitting my driver only 200 yards with a major slice and after reading it....believe it or not....I was hitting my all of clubs way further...3 wood was going 240-250, 7 iron usually went 155 yards but now 165-170, 8 iron about 160, 9 iron 145-155, I crushing the ball, besides the belly turn the whole mentality aspect of the game he discusses made a major difference in hitting more accurate shots...I have now bought the book after seeing the effects on the golf course

4-0 out of 5 stars The Daly Approach
John Daly has written this book without the usual paralysis of analysis that many golf book authors use. This makes the book interesting and enjoyable to read. So, I would put the book in the "fun to read" category.Whether the contents of the book will improve your golf game is for each reader to determine.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's so Easy!
Heard this author talk about his book on Free Beer and Hot Wings. How could I go wrong!

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, informative, great fun to read
John and his co-writer have pulled off the trick of writing a golf instruction book that is an amusing read and will not send you to sleep within the first few pages or require deep study and a Ph.D in "golf speak". The tone of the book is very chatty and you can almost hear the Big Man talking as you read: it captures his patois and personality really well. Serious students of all things golf may not find much here they do not already know (and I know as I am one of those sad people ...) but honestly it is as close to a good read as a golf instructional could ever get. The subject matter is very wide-ranging, covering preparation, a little technical swing stuff, course management, psychology etc. in bite-sized short chapters. Although strictly speaking the material will be familiar to most seasoned golfers, it is put across in a such a vivid and down-to-earth way that is convincing and motivating. By contrast to most golf instruction which is pretty soporific and requires hard work and study, this is a breeze and great fun to read.

Book Description
The average golfer knows little more about golf clubs thanwhat he or she reads in advertising or sees in Golf Channel infomercials. This lack of knowledge leads, in turn, to a kind of equipment-inducedfrustration, called the "grass ceiling," which is one of the leadingfactors in nearly three million people leaving the game each year.

This is the first book that explains to the layman how and why golf clubswork the way they do.It lets you in on the secrets that will allow you tospend your money more wisely and play the game to the best of yourability.

It is also a book that challenges the industry to rethink what it's doingto the golfer and the game in the name of "modern marketing."It calls fora new "golfer-centric" approach to the sport that will insure the health ofthe game through the 21st Century and beyond. This is the one book EVERY golfer needs to read!!

"A few years ago, Tom Wishon, with his experience as a designer, helpedme understand more about a particular aspect of golf-club performance. With this book, Tom will help you understand the entire field, makegood buying decisions, and get the most from your game."

--Arnold Palmer, Golf Hall of Fame Member

"In the course of my career I don't know how many pro-am rounds I haveplayed. In all those rounds, rarely have I seen amateurs with clubsthat genuinely fit their game. For me, Tom Wishon stripped away themystery of club fitting, which I believe helped me to become a Top 20player on the PGA Tour. I am convinced this book will allow averagegolfers to get on the right track with their equipment as well.It isa 'must read' whether you are a scratch player or a beginner."

--Scott Verplank, PGA Touring Pro

"Tom Wishon's knowledge of golf equipment isn't theoretical. It'spractical. He understands not just the theory of why and how golfequipment works, but how all golfers can make technology work for them.Even more important, he makes that knowledge easily understoodwhether you're amechanical engineer or a CPA trying tobreak 90."

--Mike Stachura, Equipment Editor, Golf Digest

Anyone interested in golf equipment needs to encounter TomWishon--whether in person or in print. His passion for sharing hisknowledge of the equipment we play with borders on the maniacal, yet healways provides clearly mapped out answers to the most complexequipment questions. Tom has always been an indispensable source andI've picked his brain for years. What's left of it is in inside thesepages.

--Mike Johnson, Equipment Editor, Golf World

I have written about golf equipment and golf technology for a very longtime. I can assure you that nobody in the game today knows more aboutgolf clubs than Tom Wishon. Furthermore, he has a passion for golfthat is really fun to behold. If the great mystery is understandinghow clubs function in the hands of real golfers, Wishon gets my vote asthe Sherlock Holmes of golf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the impotance of having the right clubs
This book provides an excellent explanation of the importance of having the correct clubs and how to go about choosing them.Easy to read and full of useful information for all handicap levels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading for any Golfer
Do you want to get ripped off the next time you buy golf clubs? Then don't buy this book!

This book teaches you what you why golf clubs are made in a certain way. Why some of the latest innovations will help your game, and why some of the latest "innovations" are nothing more than hype to sell clubs that will actually HURT your game.

Did you know that buying a driver with a longer shaft and lower loft will cause most people to hit the ball SHORTER? This book explains why, along with a number of other things that will help you make smart choices the next time you purchase clubs (and prevent you from making the expensive mistake of buying the wrong clubs.)

5-0 out of 5 stars an eye opener
Having played golf most of my life, I thought I knew all of the basics of golf club physics. Wishon provides a real education. This book will teach you everything you want and need to know about golf clubs, how they work, and why you should be custom fit.

3-0 out of 5 stars Now I'm Really Confused
This is a really great book but it is far more difficult to implement his instructions than you might be led to believe.I'll illustrate this point on the topic of the driver.

Tom has several messages with respect to the driver:
Slow swing speed players (90mph) need more loft.
You need a graphite shaft.
You need a shaft that is 43 1/2 inches instead of 45 1/2 inches.Your shaft is only 45 1/2 inches because it is convenient for the manufacturer because a 43 1/2 inch steel shaft and a 45 1/2 inch graphite both have the same (i.e. correct) swing weight.Instead of making two heads the manufacturer only has to make one but they foist an unhittable 45+ inch shaft on their customers.

Well I followed that advice and got a custom made 43 1/2 inch driver with a graphite shaft and 460 cc head. The problem is that you can't get the swingweight right on that combination without huge amounts of lead tape, a steel shaft or a graphite shaft that weighs as much as steel. What's the result? That shorter driver is harder to swing accurately than a long driver because you can't feel the weight of the head. That means that you have a driver that is less accurate, harder to hit and as a bonus it doesn't go as far.

Now I'm sure there is a solution to this problem.According to the person that made my club, the solution is lots of lead tape.Obviously, no one wants to go buy a custom made $300 driver and then put six or eight inches of lead tape on it.Also, that's not what we see the pros do so I know there is a solution.Unfortunately, the book doesn't specify what that solution is.

So after reading this book I ended up with a $300 driver that my teaching professional said was unhittable.A switch to an off-the-rack club quickly fixed the problem and none of the bad things Mr. Wishon alluded to came to pass.If Mr. Wishon had addressed this issue I would have loved the book and loved my custom made driver.Unfortunately, he didn't and it was a $300 mistake and the point of the book is to help you avoid that mistake.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
Too expensive for what it is. The cartoons are only so-so. It does not have very many pages of cartoons.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
Being an avid golfer and devotee of the New Yorker, I was surprisingly disappointed at the few real laughs in this collection

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Gift!!!
I searched and searched for a present for my golf-mad boyfriend, and this was by far the best golf book I could have bought him.Even I enjoy and can relate to the cartoons, fantastic buy and sits proudly on his bookshelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Humor about "Course" and "Off-Course" Moments
This book only lacks a knowledgeable introduction by a humorist, top golfer or pro, or cartoonist to make it a five-star offering.

To me, the best humor is one that captures the reality of how the viewer perceives life.In the case of The New Yorker Book of Golf Cartoons, every golfer will recognize her- or himself . . . and members of past foursomes.

Unlike most sports cartoons, these wonderful offerings provide both female and male perspectives as players. There's still the battle of the sexes around the missing male golfer, but not all cartoons are sex stereotyped . . . which I liked.

Here are a few of my favorites:

One guru with a long beard to another in front of cave overlooking a canyon as the second guru tees off: "If you're so enlightened, how come you can't lick that slice?"This reminded me of the section about Deepak Chopra in Who's Your Caddy?

With a tree lying between the ball and the pin, the caddy hands a saw to the golfer.

"The Male Biological Clock" shows a golfer thinking:"If I don't learn how to play golf by the time I'm forty-three, I'll never learn."

A golfer is thrashing behind a bush and birds and animals run pell-mell away from him.

"I am the Lady of the Lake, and because thou hast defiled my crystal waters I must hence smite thee. That or penalize thee a stroke.Your call."As you can imagine, most golfers would avoid the one stroke penalty.

Man races out the door carrying clubs says to wife,"Gotta run, sweetheart.By the way, that was one fabulous job you did raising the children."

A woman stands on a widow's walk atop her roof looking through a telescope towards a golf course.

One golfer to another as the second one takes his ball out of the cup, "Bankruptcy doesn't seem to have hurt your putting eye a bit, Pete."

One golfer to another as the second one wrestles with an alligator in a swamp, "Oh, for goodness' sake, forget it, Beasley. Play another one."

A man holds clubs next to a woman who's just finished her swing. The ball drops into the cup after two bounces. She asks, "Like so?"This reminded me of the time I took my mother to play golf for the first time, and she beat me on almost every hole after the first four. She quit the game in disgust that day, complaining that it was just too easy to be interesting.
Two golfers are thrashing through the high grass beyond the green looking for a lost ball. One turns to the other and says, "You know something, Jeff. There is one place we haven't looked."That's exactly what happened to me when I hit my hole-in-one to a blind green.

I could go on, but won't so that you'll have something to look forward to (other than your next round of golf). You can see that the cartoonists have a great sense of the game . . . that can only come from having struggled out on the links themselves.

This book will be a great gift for a parent who is a golfer for either Mother's Day or Father's Day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amusing Perspectives on Both Golfing and Flogging
At least to me, reviewing an anthology of cartoons resembles reviewing a performance by Marcel Marceau. Just as you really had to be there to see the performance to appreciate his talent, you really have to see the cartoons to appreciate their creators' talent. So, what to say now? First, that I am avid golfer and thus have a special interest in this volume, one of several in a series. Also, I am a long-time subscriber to The New Yorker and had already seen most of Robert Mankoff's selections as editor. I just wish I had aged as well as they have. Finally, if you love both golf (which is "flog" spelled backwards) and a good laugh, and no one else has as yet purchased The New Yorker Book of Golf Cartoons for you, don't begin dropping hints resembling anvils and then eagerly await the next birthday, anniversary, or holiday. Treat yourself to a copy TODAY. Amazon enables you to check out several of Robert Mankoff's selections as editor. Meanwhile, here's an excerpt from the dust jacket: "Mark Twain called it 'a good walk spoiled.' Lee Trevino said it was the most fun he ever had with his clothes on. For duffers and pros alike, golf can be both a delight and a torment -- often on the same day, sometimes on the same hole." Been there, done that. And, alas, will no doubt do so again...and again...and again. Fellow duffers, however badly you may play, you can count on this volume to entertain you later...and thereby help you to have the right perspective when you golf and/or flog your way through the next round. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simplicity
I have probably read 50 different books on golf instruction. This one is not only the best, but a remarkably easy one to follow and implement. It has done wonders for my golf swing in a very short period of time. If you are religious in following its simple steps to learning (in most cases without a golf club in your hands), you will be amazed at your improvement.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Golf Swing Tip Eluded Me - Until Now
The very first time I played golf I got a hole-in-one.
It's been downhill ever since.
I was 15 years old and 35 years later I was still struggling to break 80.I'd hit the ball OK some days, but usually I always put too much pressure on my short game to score.I read all the books, took all the lessons and beat balls on the range until my hands bled.Mechanically everything always looked copasetic, but yet I was never consistent in ball striking.Thin, fat, toe, hook, push, etc.

I knew it was important to be in a relaxed and "athletic position" at address. My inherent problem was with excess tension THROUGHOUT the swing.I mistook power for the "coiling of the spring", (bad metaphor!).At the top of my backswing my arms, shoulders and torso were tied in one big connected KNOT.Like most men I thought muscle strength was the key to distance and I would try to over power everything without knowing it.Think Vijay Singh, Fred Couples, Ernie Els.Swing easy, hit hard.

So I took to the range after reading this book with yet another tip to experiment on like I've been doing on and off almost all my life; low and behold, once I relaxed my arms and shoulders throughout the swing and hit the ball in a much more free flowing fashion, I swear to God I felt like the incarnation of Ben Hogan.Solid, straight shots like never before.Feeling the ball compress against the face of the club each time was sublime.Working it right and left at will.

I'm now regularly shooting in the seventies from the pro tees and focusing more on the short game to start beating old man par.I may even start competing in some amateur events next year. The key is ZERO TENSION in all muscles throught the swing.Tension destroys the golf swing.Let the club swing itself. As Sam Snead said, "Feel oily".

The reason a good teaching pro could never help me is because they could not "feel" what I was feeling at the top of my swing. Thanks Michael McT.You saved a once putrid golfers soul. This book is a "diamond in the rough", no pun intended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Old golfer says:
I've been trying to learn to play golf for some years now and found some very good help in various places.Swinging too hard and just trying to hit the ball have been my constant downfall.Tis book is finally helping me to understand and executea smoother more fluid golf swing.FHurray.

Not only that:this book has helped me understand a number of concepts that I have been constantly encouraged to do and never understood.

I wish that I had found it years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars All About Golf
Learn why all those hours spent on the green aren't making your game any better. This book will also help you develop the perfect golf swing.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love golf and want to play better, do yourself a favor and work with the ideas in this book
I am 46 and have been playing golf since I was in my late teens. There is no question in my mind that the better you can play this game the more enjoyable it is.Those players who say it doesn't matter are simply not being honest with themselves.Sure I love being on the course especially with good company, but what is supposed to be a pleasurable hobby can be far from it when you are playing poorly.Lets face it; all of us have been there, and all of us want to improve.Unfortunately golf is not like many things we do in that practice doesn't neccessarily make perfect. If what we are working on (based on information we are given) is even slightly flawed, improvement is not likely to occurr despite our best efforts.Since golf is one area where there's no shortage of instructional material, our success will largely be determined by the effort we put in and information we use. Fortunately the author of this book, Michael McTeigue, has presented in his words "everything you need to know."I could not agree with him more.As a dedicated student of the game who wanted to improve, I went from book to book and theory to theory until I came across this little book. The book gave me a systematic method by which I have enjoyed considerable improvement in only a few months. If you're tired of hours of unproductive practice, I highly recommend you work with the ideas in this book. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Review of The Physics of Golf
The Physics of Golf I my mind was a very good book, challenging at times, but still a good book. I learned a lot about golf that I didn't know before hand, like how much aerodynamics plays in the final product of the shot. Like if the number of dimples isn't just right, it could change the shot dramatically. Also, being an amateur golfer myself, I know what Jorgensen is talking about when he makes the reference to the double pendulum, because I have been coached to do that and that one could get more power out of the double pendulum method. The pendulum method is simple as Jorgensen states, that what must come up, must come down on the exact path that the golfer came down on, to, as Jorgensen puts it, more torque out of the swing.

One of the biggest flaws I think in this book is that the lack of quality to the illustrations. Most of the illustrations and graphs that the book has doesn't fully explain the detail that the author describes. Another flaw I found within this book was that the author had all this material about the golf swing but he didn't share most of it with his readers. He could have gone about 3-400 pages with all that material but I don't see why he didn't.

But with the negativity that goes with this book comes greater parts about the book that make it insightful and intelligent. Instead of the old fashioned way of saying "Well, this, this, this, and this is wrong with your swing" Jorgensen finds the hidden details written inside of a professionals swing. He tells you what makes a professional swing much greater than your own and what they do that makes them so great. Jorgensen also says in The Physics of Golf that the average tour pro can deliver up to 2 horsepower with just a swing of a club. I now realized this out of the golf course and now shooting much lower that before.
So if your looking for an insightful read that is both intelligent and insightful, get this book. I found it a little tough without a back round in physics, but rest assured I found this book very good

3-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Answer The Big Question
As a golf instructor with an educational background in Physics, I enjoyed going through the technical aspects of this book. I enjoyed Dr. Jorgenson's take on the game of golf and some of his personal experiences. He has analysed the various levers and moves and reduced everything to mathematical formulas so that presumably quantities could be inserted in the equations to see what effect differences for weight, speed, force, etc. would have on the outcome. As for the outcome everyone is looking for, he never answers the question that I'm sure everybody has, namely, "what do I need to change to get more distance".

2-0 out of 5 stars Valid as far as it goes
What Jorgensen did was concentrate on the easily observed movements of one expert golfer, i.e. the movement of the forearms and upper-arms, leading shoulder, and feet and legs, and presented nothing new or really helpful.
He made no comments on what Sam Snead called "all the swing" -- rhythm and timing, and no observation of the most important parts of the body, the hands. Hand-eye coordination is THE essential element of golfing talent, but even with great hand-eye coordination, you have to know what to do with the hands.

3-0 out of 5 stars shipping charge
I ordered two books at a same time to save international shipping charge. As you know, international shipping charge is very expensive. The price of two books was $25, but intenational shipping charge was $22 for two packages.
If you sent books in a package, I could save my money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now a bit of why
Golf instruction booklets tend to focus on a series of movements that are either "right" or "wrong", and then set you back on track. Few actually even attempt to go in-depth into why or how things work. This also has something to do with the fact that most golf instructors are not physicists.

If you want the physics behind golf, you get it here. Not that this should scare the layman away: the explanations are plain and easy to follow, with appendixes containing the technical details. The main topics covered are the physics of impact and ball aerodynamics, but a small amount of added information on putting is included.

The main gem for some people will be the new method for club matching offered. It will be interesting to see the product of this area of research in the future.

The one thing I wish there had been more detail on is in regards to the physics surrounding how clubheads transfer energy at impact, and how this effects off-center hits. The assumptions made throughout is that the perfect strike is made, which is needed for theoretical exploration, but in terms of understanding more regarding how balls and clubs work in total, this work falls somewhat short. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Golf Instruction Manual
Graphics oriented book; very easy to read; good mechanical instructions; guarantee to improve golf game and lower your handicap.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Instruction Manual For Beginners/ Intermediate
This is another well-made book by DK Publishing. Extremely well illustrated and well written. It covers all the basics of golf technique and makes it easy to understand. This is one of three books by DK that I would buy for anyone beginning golf. It is one of the few books I keep on the shelf and refer back to often for review of the basics.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mixture
I have about 8 books of golf and I think that it's the worst, because there are a mixture of drills, advices, pictures, etc. All of them confuse me a lot with differents or contradictory advices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I have maybe 10 golf improvement books, and this is one of the few that I continually refer back too. It is the only book that I have given has a gift to others. This book covers everything. If I had to buy only one golf book, this would be the ONE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for the beginner, but just right for most everyone else
Many books on golf instruction tend to be a long list of instructions. Some are technical ad nauseum, others are general to the point of vagueness. A few, like Hogan's Modern Fundamentals, are just enough info with a step-by-step progression to get one going.

This book takes a radically different approach from almost any other book around. Rather than bog the reader down with A-Z lectures, here we have a short introduction to let people know what should be happening with the individual aspects of the game (driving, iron play, pitching, chipping, and putting), and then gives a section of drills for a person to work on at their own pace and according to their level of skill (there are 3 skill levels) in the different areas. Self tests for each area of play help determine where a person should begin.

Using myself as an example, I tested to level 2 in iron play, but only one in chipping. Glancing through the level 1 drills in iron play, there were several that are good fundamental exercises (ranging in your irons, etc.), but none that seemed that vital to my development. The level 2 drills, on the other hand, mostly matched the problems I was seeking to correct while building on my current skills (fine tuning the swing plane, eliminating up and down sway). In the chipping section, I found that my lack of skill was, in fact, due to an utter misunderstanding of fundamentals. Square one was indeed where I needed to go from.

The drills, it should be noted, are not entirely things that need to be done on a course or that require a special apparatus to perform. In fact, probably half are things a person can do at home, and the ones requiring special gear do not ask you to buy a $100 training club. Rather they are things like a piece of rope to check your swing plane and power, or a piece of tape and a few tees to see if you are hitting your putter on the sweet spot consistently. If ever there was a book for the home learner, this was it.

It should also be noted that the drills tell you not only what you should learn from them, but also what potential damage could be wrought on your swing if you do them wrong. This may scare people, but I personally appreciate the honesty. Too many drill books are written from the perspective that any drill can and will help a person 100% of the time.

The book is filled with photographs that actually show you what you need to be doing. Many instruction books using photos tend to use snaps just a millisecond too early or late to be of great use, or rely heavily on illustrations that cannot capture all the detail of the human figure. This alone is a good reason to have it on your shelf.

The one person I cannot recommend buying this book, or at least buying it as the one book of instruction they will use, is the absolute beginner. The book assumes the reader has held a club before and has hit at least one strait shot in their lifetime. It is therefore perfect for someo
