It gives in deapth views of the life of the racing Greyhound in not only the US, but inIreland, the UK and Australia; the similarities and differences betweenthem. Greyhounds and Whippets and Deerhounds, Oh My!
I was going to start by saying that Sighthounds Afield is the most un-put-down-able dog book I've ever read, but that wouldn't be 100% accurate; it's the most un-put-down-able book I've ever read, period.

I find myself returning again and again to its information-laden pages, each time finding some new bit of information that I honestly don't know how I lived without knowing before. With each page I fall more and more in love with these elegant hounds that have lived with us for millennia.

For anyone who has ever adopted a track dog, the comprehensive chapter on retired racing greyhounds should be required reading and is alone more than worth the purchase price.

In writing Sighthounds Afield, Ms. Como has created a masterpiece that will remain among the most read books on my shelf for as long as I continue to read.

Outstanding!!!! Should be Required Reading!
The best of the best! Funny, witty, and to the point, the writer gives endless great advice in a big thick book that is actually a pleasure to read! You will catch yourself shaking your head in agreement, or even laughing outloud. If you have ANY interest in doing fun events your sighthounds were bred for, this book should be required reading in my opinion. Outstanding!!!!

After making every conceivable mistake in our quest to find something fun to do with our retired racing greyhound, we found this book.What a great resource!The author walks you through all the steps to get started in amateur performance events.It's also been a wonderful reference work as we've continued to participate and learn.

The definative sighthound book!
I have been enchanted with sighthounds since I was a young girl. I'm still in awe at how they've survived since ancient times virtually the same. This book covers sighthound breeds commonly seen at AKC dog shows: Afghan Hound; Borzoi; Irish Wolfhound; Saluki; Scottish Deerhound; ect.... But there are also fascinating histories of breeds virtually unknown in the USA, or even outside of their homelands. There is also information given on a few breeds believed to be extinct. Photos are not provided for every breed due to the breed's obscurity. The photos & line drawings are all in black & white; some are quite old so the quality isn't the best. I must add that this book is the only one I know of to date that includes information on the Silken Windhound! If you are infatuated by sighthounds as I am, I definately recommend this book to you! Greyhound Stories That Will Touch Your Heart
I bought this book at the same time I bought the Brannigan book on caring for the retired racing greyhound.I was planning on adopting my first retired racer and wanted to learn as much about the breed as I could.This book is very readable and includes stories about greyhounds in different parts of the world.It speaks to the whimsical, affectionate temperament of these gentle giants, and reaffirmed that I was making the right choice in adding a grey to our home!Some of the stories are about the very poor conditions of some kennels/tracks, while others share humorous or heart-rendering tales of greys living like royalty in loving homes.I'd like to know when Volume II is anticipated!

Informative but very one-sided.
I found that the stories in Greyhound Tales:True Stories of Rescue...truly represented the loving and loyal nature of these dogs. All of the adoptive parents who shared their stories parallelled my experiences of what itmeans to be a lucky owner of one of these regal beings.To be graced withthe love of a greyhound is a singular life experience. So I amespecially thankful that I was allowed to interact with these animals on aday to day basis in a career that spanned 12 years.I was a greyhoundtrainer during this time and would have liked to have read a little lessabout the "atrocities" that face the racing greyhound. As inevery business, there are people who do not operate ethically or humanely. But these people are very few and far between.They are held up asexamples by people who are not intimately aware of the racing industry'sstrive towards responsible breeding, racing, and training of these animals. To hear that "10's of thousands" of the dogs are euthanizedannually makes my head spin.The simple fact is that breeders do not raisethat many pups per year, so that number is astronomically inflated.Itis true that some dogs are euthanized but it is never a choice that is madequickly, easily or without regret.The people who run adoption kennelsknow the hard work involved in caring for these dogs and I graciously thankthem for taking on such a noble cause.I would like to see that respect goboth ways and read more stories that reflect the close bonds that can anddo establish between kennel owners, trainers, adoption kennels and thosewho adopt a dog.To always focus on the minority does nothing butmiseducate those who are not as informed.I am looking forward toanother book, one that will include some of the "good guys" whotake care of these animals daily.
