2-0 out of 5 stars Too Vague
I wasn't happy with this book one bit. It was very vague. Isn't there a book out there that breaks down elements and explains what is correct and what is not??? There is for dance.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Supplement To Your Safety Certification
This book is good for beginner coaches. The text is easy to read and the content is well-organized. It includes mini self-tests to evaluate what you have learned. It is, though, missing examples of specific skills to have your athletes practice. It is very general in several areas. Also, the 80's style cover photo definitely needs to go! You can just put a sticker on it until they come out with a new and updated guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Coaching Books

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice book. Misleading title though!
I used to be a pretty flexible self-taught gymnast type of guy in my teenage years. I purchased this "guide" with the aim of getting that flexibility back and supplement my regular weight training. However, the book turned out to be more of a picture book than a guide. It might still find some use with young people who have recently gotten started in Gymnastics with a coach.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good!
I just started gymnastics about two weeks ago because I am a competitive platform diver and my coach suggested taking gymnastics lessons. So I got this book from Amazon.com and I read it and found that it helped me in gymanstics thoroughly. Since I am only a beginner, I found this book helpful. Advanced gymansts may want to read a different book, because this one covers the basics, starting from rolls and going to back handsprings.

The photographs are step-by-step, and crisp, clear, and high-quality. Detailed instructions are also there to accompony each photograph. Another good thing is that all the gymnasts in the book do the skills with very good technique and form, so you'll know the correct and proper way to perform each skill. Plus, there are fun facts, tips, and photos of famous gymnasts that correspond to what you are learning.

Although this book does not cover much on the apparatus, I still think it is a solid introduction for beginners. In the beginning you'll find information about what to look for in a gymnastics club, what to wear to workouts, information about each gymanstics apparatus, etc. At the end of the book there are sections about sports acrobatics, tumbling, and rhythmic gymnastics.

All in all, I would defintely recommend this book to any beginning gymnast of any age, or anyone who is just interested in learning more about this sport. I myself have been following the instructions and tips and I have just about gotten my back handspring by myself- just from reading this book! So definitely check this book out if you're a beginner. Advanced gymnasts would probably enjoy browsing through it, too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
I think this is a nice book about gymnastics, but like one reviewer said, it's a little too short. It starts off with a forward by Shannon Miller, a history of gymnastics, what to wear to class, and shows a typical gym. The section with the skills was pretty good, but there weren't many in here. The instructions were nice and detailed, though, and I liked the rythmic gymnastics and sports acrobatics part. It's great for people who want to learn about the sport or beginning gymnasts.

3-0 out of 5 stars Kinda short...
A very attractive book, but covers only a few moves. (Forward/backward rolls, cartwheels, round-offs, back walk-overs, back handsprings, and handstands.) Not really useful for a girl wanting practical tips. Other apparatus (bars/beam/vault) are barely touched on.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Really Good Book for Beginning Gymnasts
This is one of the best books on gymnastics I have read. It has pictures that show people how to do the move, and it starts with really simple tricks and moves on to the most difficult trick in the book- a backhandspring. It also has parts on sports acrobatics and rythmic gymnastics. It's a great book, but I would recommend it to beginning gymnasts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars communicate with your horse
This book does a great job of going through the development of rider and horse from the beginning. It teaches you all of the elements you need to be able to have a real relationship with your horse that is based on trust.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
Definitely a "must have" for all those interested in dressage as a sport and for other diciplines wishing to improve their horses. Gives a well-rounded approach to riding including being responsible as riders to be sympathetic and diciplined.
I especially liked the chapter about the horse's willingness and how to improve that. I give Betsy Steiner a lot of credit for making dressage theory clear and practical while speaking to those with years of experience. Great pictures and summary tables to clarify the rather detailed training maps. After many half-read dressage books that seem repetitive this one will be one I can use in real life as I train on my own at the moment.
I look forward to more of Betsy's work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, Precise and Well Illustrated
Glad I picked the book from the line up.Well written guide on approaches to improve one's riding.Excellent publication, highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This is an excellent book with a approach that is easly to follow.I've read many books about the pyrimid approach, but this book really made sence of it.The outlined format is what I like. It's concise and to the point! I copied the pyrimid and posted in the tack room as a quick reference.

3-0 out of 5 stars A general weightlifting text
This book is nothing special in my opinion.I bought it expecting a discussion of how weight training can benefit gymnastics training.Unfortunately all I got was a general discussion of how to lift weights. There was little on programming, a decent discussion on periodization, and a good discussion of general lifting exercises...but why do you need general lifting exercises? There's nothing special here.It gives a decent, but not great, overview of how to lift for general conditioning and strength training.Basic questions such as:
How to incorporate weight training with gymnastic training
What lifts will help you power through sticking points in which gymnastic techniques
No discussion of appropriate volume.

One of the biggest problems this book has is it recommends a complete weightlifting regimen. You don't need that if you're training for gymnastics already. You get a lot of strength and explosive work through normal training.Adding a compelte lifting routine on top of that is a sure route to over-training.

I give this three stars because it is a good introductory weight lifting text.It just has nothing special for gymnasts.

Spotting and securing are two essential safety constituents when it comes to teaching and training gymnastics. "Teaching Children's Gymnastics" takes a close look at what spotting and securing really means and how they must be done. It is a new, revolutionary teaching idea which gets even the youngest children to learn how to spot each other safely. 1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good coaching tool
The title of this book is somewhat misleading. I ordered this book hoping to find lots of new ideas and methods - unfortunately I found very few. The majority of the book is filled with ways for kids to spot other kids. Ninety-nine percent of the material in the book would not fly in the USA! While kids CAN learn to spot each other, we cannot, as adults, trust that they are going to be as careful or capable as an adult 100% of the time. Not only is there the potential for injury (which is awful, no matter how it happens), but if a child was injured while ANOTHER CHILD was spotting them (not a coach), it would cause great problems with insurance and possibly in court.

Not only that, but the book is rather outdated, using equipment no longer present in today's gyms (or that you would even want in your gym - like wooden boxes!) Contributing to that, I believe,is that this book was originally published in Germany. I imagine that shortly after the cold war (around the time it was published), gymnastics institutes may not have been receiving the funding needed to keep their equipment up to date.

The few exercises I did find in this book I use only on occasion, as trust-building exercises. I would not recommend this book, especially if you are a young or new coach wanting to learn more about coaching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent illustrations and step-by-step guidelines!
This book is very thorough and has excellent diagrams and photos to help in following the step-by-step instructions.Even young children can get involved and learn how to spot each other if the suggestions given in this book are followed.Gymnastics needs to be a safe activity for children, but it also has to be fun -- this book is helpful for any teacher or coach in achieving both those goals.A very practical and helpful manual. Recommended.
