Product Description
Modern sport relies heavily on science in order to enhance performance, maintain safety, and ensure long-term health. By combining the best of both scientific/medical and gymnastics-related literature, the authors of this book enable scientists, physicians, parents, coaches and gymnasts to understand how gymnastics works. They provide a unique and systematic presentation of the scientific aspects of training and performance while incorporating some of the 'culture' of gymnastics. Their very close ties to gymnastics guarantee that the subject becomes intelligible to anyone as it provides an encyclopedic overview of the scientific/medical research in women's gymnastics, including new information that will not be found in typical computer databases. "Scientific Aspects of Women's Gymnastics" provides the most up-to-date information on gymnastics by covering all relevant topics such as biomechanics, physiology, injury epidemiology, growth and injury, and kinanthropometry. - William A.Sand. ... • Identify the qualities that are essential for a safe and appropriate sport, gymnastics, or dance program.

• Assess teachers and coaches to identify qualified instructors.

• Evaluate program guidelines to determine what constitutes a safe and comprehensive program.

Millions of young people participate in school- and community-based physical activity and sport programs. Most parents support their children’s involvement in these programs because the programs promote physical fitness, development of motor skills, self-confidence, social skills, and a physically active lifestyle. In fact, parents are increasingly supporting their children’s participation in these activities at younger and younger ages.

But children are not small adults; they have special needs for safe progression and participation. This publication can guide parents in their search for safe and appropriate activity or sport programs and assist coaches and leaders who want to offer developmentally appropriate activities.

Team Sports, Gymnastics, and Dance in Community Settings: A Guide for Teachers, Coaches, and Parents is the guidebook that every parent, coach, teacher, and administrator needs to read to select or assess a program in which their child is enrolled.

For parents seeking a dance, gymnastics, or team sport program, the guide describes appropriate practices and content for teaching preschoolers through high school students. The guide examines key factors for selecting a program as well as criteria for assessing teachers and coaches. The book provides valuable information and tips so that you can make informed decisions about choosing the program that is right for your child. ... Read more

Product Description
• Design developmentally appropriate gymnastics learning experiences for students in grades K through 6
• Teach via three major gymnastics skill themes: traveling, statics, and rotation
• Create your own ideas for more learning experiences, offering greater variety and progression options

Teaching Children Gymnastics: A Developmentally Appropriate Approach, Second Edition, shows teachers how to use an innovative and individualized approach to teaching gymnastics skills and how to link those skills into sequences. This text has been expanded to present 30 child-tested examples of gymnastics activities (called learning experiences) that are ideal for children in kindergarten through grade 6.

The learning experiences are divided into three skill themes: traveling, statics, and rotation. Each learning experience may be explored for three or more lessons to provide up to a full unit of instruction.

This book explains the why and how of teaching children gymnastics. It describes how learning experiences allow teachers to focus each lesson on one skill theme while at the same time drawing on other themes to support the development of sequences. This approach helps children advance more quickly from performing isolated skills to performing movement sequences.

This new edition includes many additions and updates:
• Real-life scenarios in part I that bring key points to life
• More standards-based learning experiences for each skill theme
• Ideas for creating additional gymnastics learning experiences
• Sections on behavior management, inclusion, fitness, and advocacy
• Assessment of children in gymnastics using both process and product variables
• Objectives and questions for reflection for each chapter

Part I contains the necessary background information on the national standards for physical education, the importance of using a developmentally appropriate approach, advice on tailoring gymnastics instruction to fit each teaching situation, ideas for task development in gymnastics, effective management strategies and safety concerns, and ways to assess student progress across three domains: psychomotor, cognitive, and affective. The chapter objectives, scenarios, and questions for reflection help teachers think about and apply the material in meaningful ways.

Part II is organized around three skill themes: traveling, statics, and rotation. There are 10 detailed learning experiences for each theme. Additional ideas are provided for those who want to create their own learning experiences.

The appendix handouts are ready-to-copy forms, such as student certificates and gymnastics report cards, and can be used as they are or they can be customized. Sample forms include task cards, lesson design worksheets, and sample lesson plans.

An annotated suggested readings list provides teachers in training as well as experienced teachers and recreation leaders a ready resource for expanding their understanding and skills related to developmentally appropriate gymnastics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Powerful Book
This book was written by Bela Karolyi, the Romanian coach who has coached such gymnastics legends as Nadia Cominici, Mary Lou Retton, Kim Zmeskal, Dominique Moceanu and Kerri Strug.

This book tells you about his life in Romania, training Nadia, defecting to America, and all the way to the 1992 Olympics.

Before I didn't know much about Bela or about the girls he had trained. But after reading this book, I now know much more about him and his wife, Marta.

If you want to know more about this memorable coach, be sure to read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bela is the BEST!
Bela Karolyi is such a inspirational man to take what little he had and make winners. I had the advantage of meeting this man this summer. He seems like a father figure with strong discipline and a positive effort.Ialways loved it when he 'You can Do it! " Which is all so true whenyou use your body in a positive way in the sport of gymnastics or any othersport.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thisis one of the GREATEST gymnastics books EVER written!
It tells the entire story of Bela Karolyi's life and it tells the stories of the many famous gymnasts he has coached. The book makes you appreciate this man more than anything else could!I read it before I met him atKarolyi's camp and it made it THAT MUCH better!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A true inspiration
I have read this book a while back. However, I often refer to it for the inspiration, and sometimes quote it to my students (I am a figure skating coach). Bela is a legendary coach, and it was interesting to find out abouthis coaching, and life philosophies. I hope I could be like him one day.The part of the book that especially moved me is when Bela found out thatmore than half of his students became p.e. teachers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bela exagerates results many times, but a good book overall.
I thought the book was great, if you love Bela
if you don't or are a true gymnastic stat follower
you might not, because Bela includes many of his
personal beliefs on many competitions, some of which
are trully exagerated and completly from the point
of view of a coach. Which is what i believe the point
of the book was. Overall it was a cool book to read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book I Have Encountered!
This book is by far the best book on teaching gymnastics that I have encountered.I bought ten copies so I could distribute a copy to each of the instructors in my program. Not only were the individual games fantastic, but the overall themes and ideas changed the way I think about coaching and motivation. It even changed the way I think about motivation in settings outside of the gym.I learned how to better foster cooperation and a sense of challenge and accomplishment for each student.I strongly recommend careful reading of the introduction as well as the last two paragraphs of the "About the Author" section.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I bought this because an online forum told me this was a great book for gymnastics games and I agree. It's great. The whole book is in color and has many pictures showing the games. It goes over every game step by step. The kids love them! I am very impressed with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best Gymnastics Book Ever - Period.
I've coached gymnastics for over ten years and have never come across a resource like this before. This is simply the best gymnastics activity book ever published...period.

The digital photos are crystal clear, and the spiral binding allows me to easily use it on the floor while coaching. Also, since I can't do all the moves myself, the pictures are great for the students to see exactly what I'm asking them to do.

I've bought one for each of my coaches and for less than $30 it was a steal. I would have easily paid double that price, no kidding.

I didn't realize that the author also does workshops, a definite for the near future.

This is a must buy for any coach wishing to get students excited about gymnastics.

Thanks Mr. Miscisin, and thanks from the kids too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Serious skill development through FUN and games
W-O-W!The Big Book of Gymnastics Games is just what I have been looking for.I was getting burned out teaching the same drills over and over and my creativity was really stretched trying coming up with new ideas that would keep my students' attention. The book provides step by step instructions from game benefits, equipment needed, and set-up to rules for play, cautions, modifications, and extra hints for success. The full-color pictures help me get instant understanding and see the games in action. Because it lays flat when opened, sometimes I take the book right out on the floor with me while coaching. My students LOVE the games, (I have a hard time getting them to stop playing), their skill development has excellerated and I feel my own coaching has improved as well. I am thrilled with my purchase and recommend it highly, especially to those who keep trying to swipe mine...get your own, you'll be glad you did! ... Read more

Product Description

Recognizing that modern day dressage has become more of a sport than an art form, this guide advocates for a revival of schooling that emphasizes pleasure for both the horse and the rider. The discussion focuses first on how the rider learns in the classical system and then turns to the selection and management of the horse. Addressed to riders of all ages and skill levels—and to animal lovers generally—this moving appeal successfully showcases a humane riding tradition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lovely photos...
I purchased this book as a compliment to another dressage book I had read entitled Tug of War: Classical versus "Modern" Dressage (by Dr.Gerd Heuschmann).Although Classical Schooling with the Horse in Mind strongly supports the points made in Tug of War, it won't add much to your knowledge of dressage nor expand very much on the arguments made in Tug of War. The photos are lovely, the author rides beautifully, but the book by Dr. Gerd Heuschmann addresses important training issues in dressage more directly and more forcefully.Tug of War is the more important book to read if you wish to know more about some questioned techniques used today in dressage horse training.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gentle training.
This book is very good. Give deals on how to do movements. Where to place you hands and legs. It was very help full.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classical Schooling with the Horse in Mind - Anja Beran
This is an extremely well written book, and very ably and beautifully illustrated. The text was thoughtfull and informative, and questions asked and answered from the equine anatomical/structural point were extremely valuable in the understanding of the working of the equine body. The notion that the whole way of being and doing of the horse being of paramount importance to training was so good to read - too much of that seems to be lost in these days of 'instant' expectations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb book.
A book that every rider should have and use, no matter what their riding interest is.Dressage riders should be paying much more attention to classical training and she really increases the levels of understanding.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures, great philosophy
I read this book just after I re-read Podhajsky's 'Complete Training of Horse and Rider'. I felt that I completely understood where Beran was coming from, because she is very much in the same tradition of gentle classical riding with lightness as the ultimate goal.

I must say however that her book cannot be compared to Podhajsky's book, as they are at extreme ends of the spectrum in terms of detail. You could not read Beran's book and then go out and teach your horse (or learn yourself) a schooling exercise. Having said this, this was probably not her aim. Her book is more intended to get the rider thinking about their style of riding and whether they are sympathetic enough to the horse and really working towards lightness. For the advanced rider (which I am not) I am sure she offers a great deal of practical tips.

One of Beran's real hates is the style of riding that emphasises strong rein contact and correspondingly strong leg aids (she refers to this as the German style). In this respect, it is quite likely that her book is directed at dressage riders around the world who use this method and didn't realise there was any other (better) method. Coming from the backwoods as far as dressage is concerned, I myself am only dimly aware of this fact, and have had instructors in both camps. Luckily my instincts came to the fore and I refused to get draw reins or pull and boot my horse at the same time. Having read this book I will now have my antennae much more finely tuned and will hopefully always reject the severe method despite it being presented as the only method.

The beautiful photos in the book (mearly all of Beran but on a range of georgous horses) must be mentioned. They are an inspiration in themselves and when you feel you have got enough out of the book you could cut them out and frame them and put them on your wall for re-inspiration when needed.
